Olefins are ubiquitous in processed petroleum streams undergoing thermal and catalytic cracking processes. However, the molecular characterization of olefins is often troublesome as a result of the presence of cycloalkanes or aromatic hydrocarbons, which cannot be distinguished from each other because of their identical molecular composition. This study provides a novel method to selectively characterize the molecular composition of olefins in processed petroleum streams. The olefins were selectively converted into halohydrocarbons with iodine monochloride as a reaction reagent and then subjected to high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis with positive-ion atmospheric pressure chemical ionization. The molecular composition of olefins in the coker diesel, the coker gas oil, and the pyrolysis gas oil was successfully characterized by the method, which indicates that the linear mono-olefins are often the dominant species. The derivatization also enables the identification of co-eluted individual compounds in gas chromatographic analysis. The method could be applicable to other streams from complex fossil fuels.

Porous materials have received extensive attention due to their superior adsorption properties, but there are few studies on oil adsorption. In this paper, a new self-design high-temperature reactor carried out MCC adsorption experiments, and a complete test system was used to study the adsorption characteristics, pyrolysis kinetics and pyrolysis products. The results of SEM and XRD showed that G 3 H gradually wetted the surface of MCC and the crystallinity increased. In addition, the pyrolysis parameters of MCC-adsorption-G 3 H (MAG) were measured by DSC and STA. The results showed that MCC was pyrolyzed in one step while MAG was in two. Meanwhile, thermodynamic model fitting indicated that the first stage was Fn and the second was Cnm autocatalytic. Notably, the variation of pyrolysis activation energy in the first stage was similar to that of adsorption capacity. Pyrolysis products of G 3 H were measured by Py-GC-MS, and pyrolysis residues of MAG were tested by FTIR. Combined with the volatiles determined by TG-IR, the influence of G 3 H on the pyrolysis characteristics was obtained, and the pyrolysis path of MAG was summarized. The results showed that porous materials can recycle oil and provided a guideline for industrial production.

Carboxylic acids are frequently encountered in sediments and petroleum, and their individual molecular structures are of great significance for the study of geochemical significance. However, analyzing carboxylic acid individual compounds within complex organic mixtures, like petroleum, poses a challenge for gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) as a result of their high polarity and boiling points as well as potential interference from other matrix compounds. This study proposes a novel approach for separation and characterization of carboxylic acids in petroleum samples, employing the esterification reaction on a solid-phase extraction column packed with silver-ion silica gel. Carboxylic acids are promptly converted into the corresponding methyl esters during elution, and these resulting nonpolar methyl esters were subsequently subjected to GC–MS analysis. The conversion ratios of on-column esterification and the corresponding reaction conditions were validated using carboxylic acid model compounds. The on-column esterification process enables the rapid and selective esterification of carboxylic acid compounds in crude oil, facilitating their separation from the petroleum matrix. This method has been demonstrated to be highly valuable for elucidating the molecular structures of carboxylic acid isomers in petroleum. In addition, the method is both flexible and time-efficient, demonstrating its potential for analyzing the molecular structures of carboxylic acid markers in the fields of geochemistry and petrochemistry.

The developments of high-resolution mass spectrometry and soft ionization technologies have enabled the molecular characterization of petroleum fractions. However, quantitative analysis of molecular composition for petroleum is far from being achieved. In this study, semi-quantitative analysis of molecular composition for the whole compounds in heavy petroleum fractions was carried out. Hydrocarbons and various heteroatoms in the heavy petroleum fractions were characterized by only electrospray ionization coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry. The molecular composition of various types of compounds were calculated and integrated quantitatively based on bulk chemical composition. The semi-quantitative molecular compositions of four heavy petroleum fractions with largely different bulk properties were comprehensively characterized in multiple dimensions such as carbon number distribution, condensation degree, molecular weight, mass fraction, and molecule number. More than 5,000 molecules, which classified into 16 compound classes of seven groups were quantitatively characterized from the four fractions. The accuracy of the analysis seems acceptable according the H/C ratio comparation between that derived from element analysis and the semi-quantitative molecular composition. Representative molecule set containing structural information was also proposed based on the semi-quantitative results.
