Experimental study on the adsorption mechanism and desorption of guar gum with different structures on quartz surfaces

Peng Shi,Shibin Wang,Yipeng Li,Xuhua Xia,Li Bao,Shan Xu

The adsorption and desorption of guar gum on quartz surfaces are particularly concerned in mineral flotation and hydraulic fracturing. The adsorption capacity of GG, HPG, CMG, and CGG in quartz was quantitatively studied by spectroscopy. The adsorption mechanism and desorption of four different structures of guar gum on the quartz surface were investigated using zeta potential, XPS, and adhesion work. The adsorption morphology of guar gum on the quartz surface was studied by AFM. The results showed that the adsorption capacity was CGG > GG > HPG > CMG. The adsorption capacity was reduced after adding urea. There were hydrogen bonding interactions between the four types of guar gum structures and quartz surfaces. There was electrostatic repulsion between the CMG and quartz surfaces and electrostatic attraction was observed between the CGG and quartz surfaces. The adsorption of guar gum with four structures on the surface of quartz was more inclined to the upright form with multiple adsorption sites. Urea preferentially occupied the adsorption sites on quartz surfaces and inhibited the hydrogen bonding between guar gum and quartz surfaces. The research results have practical significance for the related study of the adsorption and desorption of guar gum on mineral surfaces.

Probing the Interaction Mechanism of Sodium Oleate and Dodecyl Amine with Quartz Surfaces in the Presence of Ca2+ Ions by AFM Force Measurement

Di Meng,Haipeng Xie,Bin Yan,Weixuan Zhao,Yiming Fu,Wenjihao Hu,Yongli Gao

Quartz is a key raw material in high-tech fields (such as photovoltaics and semiconductor microelectronics), and the most efficient extraction method of quartz is mineral flotation. Quartz activation plays a crucial role in mineral flotation. However, the mechanism underlying the process remains unclear, and the role of additional metal ions is controversial. In this study, the interaction forces between the quartz surface, the dodecylamine (DDA) cation/sodium oleate (NaOL) anion mixed collectors, and Ca2+ were analyzed using atomic force microscopy in order to systematically explore the activation process of quartz flotation. The results confirmed that the activation process was initialized from NaOL, which was adsorbed on the surface of a calcium-covered quartz surface. The existence of DDA inhibited the binding of Ca2+ to NaOL so that more Ca2+ was adsorbed on the quartz surface to provide the adsorption site for NaOL. Moreover, the best adsorption condition of Ca2+ + NaOL + DDA mixed solution was analyzed by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, and it demonstrated that the most stable chemisorption environment on the quartz surface was at pH 11.0. In these circumstances, Ca2+ could first adsorb in a point-like manner on the quartz surface, which was then adsorbed with a mixture of NaOL and DDA. This result showed that, at a specific pH, Ca2+ could encourage the coadsorption of cationic/anionic mixed collectors on quartz. This work provides an important new understanding of the intermolecular interactions that take place during complex mineral flotation processes between chemical additives and mineral surfaces. The methodology used in this study can be easily adapted to different interfacial processes, including water treatment, membrane technology, bioengineering, and oil production.

Ion-induced oil–water wettability alteration of rock surfaces. Part II: Base interactions between oil and solid

Mei Liu,Shijing Xu,Shaohua Zhu,Jiazhong Wu,Bofeng Bai,Chengzhen Sun

Following the first part of this study, herein, we focus on the oil-wet rock surfaces formed by the adsorption of polar molecules via base interactions. The effects of ions on the oil–water wettability of quartz surfaces and the mechanism behind the phenomenon are revealed through contact angle measurements and surface characterization. The results indicate that the ions can greatly alter the wettability of the surface to become more water-wet only when the salt solutions are alkaline, with a maximum decrease of approximately 20° in the water contact angle. NaCl and KCl solutions are more effective than CaCl 2 and Na 2 SO 4 solutions. In alkaline solutions, the hydroxyl ions can deprotonate the octadecylamine molecules to weaken their interactions with the surfaces, such that the cations can displace the adsorbed octadecylamine and lead to large desorption from the surfaces. Finally, a quantitative model is established to describe the ion-induced wettability alteration.

Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Simulation to Investigate Oil Adsorption and Detachment from Sandstone/Quartz Surface by Low-Salinity Surfactant Brines

Ernest Peter Maiki,Renyuan Sun,Shaoran Ren,Ayman Mutahar AlRassas

In this study, we explore the impact of monovalent (NaCl) and divalent (CaCl2) brines, coupled with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant at varying low concentrations, on the detachment and displacement of oil from sandstone rock surfaces. Employing the sessile drop method and molecular dynamics simulations, we scrutinize the behavior of the brine solutions. Our findings reveal that both low salinity and low-salinity surfactant solutions induce a gradual shift in rock wettability toward a more water-wet state. This wettability transformation is not instantaneous but evolves over time, as observed through meticulous molecular motion analyses. Through contact angle measurements and molecular dynamics simulations, we delve into the molecular motion at subpore and micropore scales on sandstone/quartz surfaces. The adsorption of surface-active agents from the oil to the oil–brine interface results in a reduced interfacial tension, significantly contributing to oil displacement. Notably, low salinity concentrations ranging from 1000 to 10,000 ppm exhibit the lowest contact angles within 30 min across all solutions. However, higher concentrations deviate from this declining trend, especially with divalent ions like Ca2+, which bridge polar molecules onto the rock surface, resulting in an increased oil-wetting state. This research unveils the intricate molecular motions involved in employing low-salinity surfactant solutions for oil detachment from surfaces. Furthermore, it provides valuable insights into the underlying forces driving oil detachment and wettability alteration.

Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations of amine collector adsorption on quartz (0 0 1) surface in the aqueous solution

An Liu,Jin-chuan Fan,Min-qiang Fan

In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to investigate the structure-reactivity relationship of dodecylamine (DDA), dodecyl-propyl ether amine and fatty amine ethoxylate (AC1201) molecules as flotation collectors for quartz. The results indicate that these collectors have difficulty forming a covalent bond with the silicon atom on the mineral surfaces, while their protonation species can easily adsorb on quartz surface through electrostatic attraction. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation has been used to study the adsorption of amine derivative collectors on quartz surfaces at a molecular level. In the consideration of solvation effect, a model close to the realistic flotation system is fabricated. Interaction energies for collector-quartz surface have been determined, based on which, AC1201 is found to be the most effective collector. Trend as obtained from the molecular modeling has been validated by microcalorimetry measurements and flotation studies on quartz with DDA, ether amine and AC1201 at different pH and collector concentrations.

Controllable adsorption and desorption of a cationic surfactant at quartz directed by host-guest complex

Liang Xiao Gan,Chun Ling Hao,Xiao Ming Jiang

The adsorption and desorption of surfactants play an important role in the industrial processes. We used cucurbituril (Q[7]) to tune the adsorption and desorption of a cationic surfactant at quartz. The cationic surfactant, N-Benzyl-N-hexadecyl dimethylammonium halide , can spontaneously absorb on the quartz surface. But when the absorbed surfactant at quartz reacts with Q[7] to form the host-guest complex, the absorbed surfactant is desorbed from the quartz surface. Adamantanamine hydrochloride was selected as another stronger guest molecule. Owing to the higher binding constant , Q[7] preferentially complex adamantanamine. Therefore, the surfactant molecules in the cavity of Q[7] are expelled to the water–quartz interface and absorb again on the quartz surface. In this manner, the adsorption and desorption of the cationic surfactant can be modulated. Through the measurements of the surface activity, contact angle and Zeta potential , we studied the adsorption and desorption of the cationic surfactant at quartz. The real-time adsorption and desorption of the cationic surfactant were monitored by the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The surfactant aggregates on the quartz surfaces were scanned by the atomic force microscope (AFM). We expect to provide a way of tuning the adsorption and desorption of surfactants on solid surfaces .

An abiotic source of Archean hydrogen peroxide and oxygen that pre-dates oxygenic photosynthesis

He Hongping,Wu Xiao,Xian Haiyang,Zhu Jianxi,Yang Yiping,Lv Ying,Li Yiliang,Konhauser Kurt O.

The evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis is a pivotal event in Earth’s history because the O 2 released fundamentally changed the planet’s redox state and facilitated the emergence of multicellular life. An intriguing hypothesis proposes that hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) once acted as the electron donor prior to the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis, but its abundance during the Archean would have been limited. Here, we report a previously unrecognized abiotic pathway for Archean H 2 O 2 production that involves the abrasion of quartz surfaces and the subsequent generation of surface-bound radicals that can efficiently oxidize H 2 O to H 2 O 2 and O 2 . We propose that in turbulent subaqueous environments, such as rivers, estuaries and deltas, this process could have provided a sufficient H 2 O 2 source that led to the generation of biogenic O 2 , creating an evolutionary impetus for the origin of oxygenic photosynthesis.
