Preparation of Silicon/Iron Binary Aerogel from High Iron Fly Ash and Adsorption of Mine Antimony Wastewater

Ma Jianxiang,Zhang Xiaomin,Zhang Liang,Wu Junjie,Hua Xinrui,Guo Zhonglin,Wang Zhuang,Liu Bing,He Panyang,Chen Tianxing,Ma Lianjing,Ren Jinbin

In this paper, silicon/iron binary aerogel (shortened to HFGel in the following text) was prepared from industrial solid waste fly ash. Antimony in the simulated solution and mine antimony wastewater were adsorbed with HFGel, respectively. The results showed that (1) HFGel has a three-dimensional network structure consisting of spherical nanoparticles with a specific surface area of about 346.4 m 2 /g, a pore size of 4.42 nm, and a pore volume of 0.43 cm 3 /g. (2) The adsorption of Sb(V) relies on the functional Fe-OH. The maximum adsorption capacity of HFGel on Sb(V) was 58.82 mg/g. The adsorption of Sb(V) by HFGel followed the secondary adsorption kinetics and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. (3) The adsorption efficiency of HFGel decreased from 93% to 80.4% after five cycles. (4) HFGel has excellent selective adsorption performance for antimony. When the concentrations of CO 3 2− , SO 4 2− and PO 4 3− were 300 mg/L, 500 mg/L, and 100 mg/L, respectively, the removal rates of Sb(V) were 91.9%, 89.9%, and 83.7%, respectively. (5) After a single oxidation-adsorption process, HFGel removed 99.2% of antimony from mine wastewater. The concentration of effluent is < 8 μg/L.

Various microbes used for the recovery of rare earth elements from mine wastewater

Qiuting Yan,Zuliang Chen

Microbes used for the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from mining wastewater indicated traces of Escherichia coli ( E. coli , 2149.6 μg/g), Bacillus sphaericus (1636.6 μg/g), Bacillus mycoides (1469.3 μg/g), and Bacillus cereus (1083.9 μg/g). Of these, E. coli showed an affinity for REEs than non-REEs (Mn and Zn). The amount of heavy REEs adsorbed (1511.1 μg/g) on E. coli was higher than light REEs (638.0 μg/g) due to the process of increasing adsorption with decreasing ionic radius. Additionally, E. coli demonstrated stability in the recovery of REEs from mining wastewater, as evidenced by 4 cycles. SEM-EDS, XPS and FTIR showed that REEs had a disruptive effect on cells, REEs absorbed and desorbed on the cell surface including ion exchange with ions such as Na + , ligand binding with functional groups like –NH 2 . Finally, the cost assessment confirmed the economically feasible of E. coli in recovery of REEs from mining wastewater.

The complexation color development—visible spectrophotometry method for rapid determination of Ca2+ concentration in mine wastewater and its mechanism

Xuefei Zhang,Fanfei Min,Lingyun Liu

Ca 2+ is an important cation in coagulants used in the treatment of mine wastewater such as coal slime water, and its concentration directly affects the settling and flotation of coal slime water. The rapid determination of Ca 2+ concentration is of great significance to guiding industrial production. Herein, the complexation color development—visible spectrophotometry (CCDVS) method was proposed to obtain the concentration information of Ca 2+ , wherein 1-(1-Hydroxy-4-methyl-2-phenylazo)-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (Calmagite) was used as an indicator and the mechanism of complexation between the indicator and Ca 2+ was explored. The strong correlation between spectral data and Ca 2+ concentration (R 2  = 0.997) indicated that this method could be used for Ca 2+ detection, thereby a quantitative model was proposed to predict Ca 2+ concentration by using the complexation color development—visible light absorption data. The chemical element and bonding analysis confirmed that Ca 2+ was complexed with the sulfonic acid group on the indicator skeleton in the form of Ca(OH) + intermediate in an alkaline environment. The generated complexation product (-S-O-Ca(OH) + ) could stably absorb 620 nm light energy, and its absorption performance remained 99.8% after standing for 60 min. The relative standard deviation of the detection results of Ca 2+ in different calcium source solutions was as low as 1.24%, which confirmed the strong calcium source compatibility of the proposed method. More importantly, the successful application of this method in the determination of Ca 2+ concentration at different points in industrial coal slime water system proved its advantages of high accuracy (relative error is as low as 5.01%), low cost and simple operation. The LOD of this method is 0.038 mg/L. Therefore, the complexation color development—visible spectrophotometry method can maximize the potential for cost reduction and efficiency improvement in mine wastewater treatment.

Highly selective recovery of rare earth elements from mine wastewater by modifying kaolin with phosphoric acid

Kaibo Hu,Yucheng Liu,Xiaowen Zhou,Shahid Hussain,Ke Li,Qingfeng Chen,Chuanqi Zhang,Weijie Song,Xuewei Li,Yinhua Wan

Recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from mine wastewater is essential for maintaining rare earth reserves and sustainable application of REEs. In the present study, we prepared a phosphoric acid modified kaolin (P-K) adsorbent by a simple mechanochemical process for the selective recovery of REEs from rare earth wastewater. The impacts of phosphoric acid dosage, milling duration, initial pH, temperature, initial ion concentration, and adsorbent dosage on the selective adsorption of REEs were investigated. The findings demonstrate that the adsorption of REEs by P-K follows pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, and is dominated by chemical adsorption, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 19.82 mg/g at 50 ℃. Additionally, in an original mine wastewater, the recovery rate of REEs can reach more than 90%, whereas the adsorption rates of calcium, magnesium and, ammonia nitrogen (whose concentration is 18 times that of REEs) are nearly zero, indicating that P-K has extremely high selectivity for REEs. Furthermore, the feedstock solution containing 40 mg/L of REEs may be concentrated to 3510 mg/L following enrichment treatment, and 99.9% of the REEs are eluted using a low concentration of hydrochloric acid. The findings illustrate that P-K has a wide range of potential applications in the treatment of rare earth industrial effluents.

Investigation of the effect of phosphonate antiscalants on the reverse osmosis membranes' permeation and desalination performance in mine wastewater treatment process

Jiapeng Li,Yunhuan Chen,Hailong Wang,Xinyue Liu,Yulong Ma,Yongsheng Ren

Contaminants in mine wastewater treatment processes can significantly impact the performance of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Antiscalants are commonly applied to the RO process to mitigate the deterioration of membrane permeation efficiency caused by fouling. Therefore, it is essential to gain an understanding of the role played by anti-scaling agents in RO operations. This work investigates the effects of three commonly used phosphonate antiscalants, namely ATMP (aminotris (methylenephosphonic acid)), HEDP (1-hydroxyethylidene-1, 1-bis (phosphonic acid)), and PBTC (2-phosphonobutane-1, 2, 4-tricarboxylic acid), on the permeation and desalination performances of RO membranes. The results showed that the presence of phosphonate antiscalants effectively inhibits interactions between components and between components and RO membranes, thereby enhancing membrane flux levels. However, the inhibitors may interact with the membrane surface and alter its properties, significantly affecting membrane performance. Excessive addition of antiscalants increases membrane contamination and deviates membrane flux from optimal levels. Furthermore, adding phosphonate inhibitors significantly affects the membrane retention efficiency of inorganic salt components and the extent to which the membrane retains organic wastewater components. This work provides insight into the role of phosphonate antiscalants in treating wastewater with soluble silica. It may offer a theoretical foundation for standardizing the use of antiscalants in industrial wastewater.

Recovery of rare earth elements from mine wastewater using biosynthesized reduced graphene oxide

Yalin Yang,Xiulan Weng,Zuliang Chen

Recycling rare earth elements (REEs) from sources of secondary waste such as REEs mine wastewater has emerged as a sustainable approach with both waste reuse and wastewater processing. In this study, green reduced graphene oxide (G-rGO) was prepared utilizing green tea extract with the advantages of being environmentally friendly, sustainable, and low cost. To understand how G-rGO functions, it was compared to commercial reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and the efficiencies in adsorbing Y(III) were 91.6% and 11.9%, respectively. This indicated there is a synergistic adsorption between the capping layer of G-rGO and rGO alone. G-rGO and rGO were characterized before and after exposure to Y(III). This comparison indicated that Y(III) was adsorbed on the surface of G-rGO through complexation and electrostatic interaction. The adsorption kinetics best fit the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model isotherm model, with adsorption capacities of 24.54 mg g −1 . A probable adsorption mechanism of Y(III) by G-rGO was proposed, involving electronic complexation, electrostatic adsorption and ion exchange. Furthermore, the adsorption efficiencies of G-rGO for Y(III), Ce(III) and Zn(II) in mine wastewater were 22.1%, 89.1% and 14.6%, respectively. These results demonstrate that G-rGO has great potential in the recovery of REEs from mine wastewater.

Shielding process for the effect of anions on uranium selective recovery and heavy metal removal from simulated mine effluents

Jianzhang Gao,Jiaqi Chen,Huitao Lv,Xingan Feng,Shitao Liao,Lijun Zhang,Fuqiu Ma,Yun Xue,MingBo Ji,Haichao Wang

The selective separation of uranium from uranium tailing wastewater is of great importance for environmental protection and nuclear energy development. The complexation of Cl − , SO 4 2− , NO 3 – , and PO 4 3− with UO 2 2+ seriously hindered the achievement of this goal. Herein, a process for achieving it with the coexistence of anions and cations by shielding the influence of anions was designed. Thermodynamic calculations indicated that CO 3 2– could enhance the retention of uranium in the solution by complexing with UO 2 2+ and capturing UO 2 2+ in UO 2 SO 4 and UO 2 HPO 4 to form water-soluble uranyl-carbonate. The capturing ability of CO 3 2– was not diminished by the increase in anion concentration. And the electrochemical experiments revealed the high efficiency of uranium electrochemical extraction in the above system. In addition, the results showed that uranium could be separated from Co 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Ni 2+ ions under the coexistence of Cl − , SO 4 2− , NO 3 – , and PO 4 3− , thus achieving the selective separation of uranium in the wastewater. And the retention ratio of impurity cations in the liquid phase after separation was less than 0.003. Overall, this method provides new insights into the selective separation of uranium and heavy metal removal in real uranium tailings wastewater.

Mechanistic insights into the selective recovery of rare earth elements from mine wastewater using green-synthesized silver nanoparticles

Simin Jiang,Xinmiao Xu,Wei Chen,Zuliang Chen

The rising demand for rare earth elements (REEs) and escalating environmental concerns have rendered the recovery of REEs a key problem. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of silver nanoparticles produced via green tea extract (GT-Ag NPs) in the selective recovery of REEs from mine wastewater, achieving separation coefficients ( K d ) ranging from 1.34 × 10 3 to 2.08 × 10 3  mL/g and recovery efficiencies of 40 %–50 %. To elucidate the mechanisms of REEs recovery by GT-Ag NPs, we performed kinetic studies and utilized several characterization techniques, such as SEM-EDS-Mapping, XRD, zeta potential measurements, FTIR, and XPS. These findings revealed that electrostatic attraction and complexation may play a crucial role in adsorbing REEs onto GT-Ag NPs. Following, for desorption process, the GT-Ag NPs were immersed in a 0.01 M sodium citrate solution, achieving over 90 % efficiency, where the desorption process primarily involved ion exchange between REEs and sodium ions, along with complexation between sodium citrate and the REEs. Notably, after four adsorption-desorption cycles, GT-Ag NPs retained 40 % of their adsorption efficiency and over 90 % desorption efficiency while maintaining more than 50 % adsorption efficiency after four column experiment cycles, further confirming the excellent reusability of GT-Ag NPs. Overall, the findings from this study offer significant understanding of REEs recovery from mine wastewater using GT-Ag NPs.
