Pyrite is one of the most abundant metal sulfide tailings and is susceptible to oxidation, yielding acidic mine drainage (AMD) that poses significant environmental risks. Consequently, the exploration of pyrite surface oxidation and the kinetic influencing factors remains a pivotal research area. Despite the oxidation of pyrite producing a significant amount of sulfate (SO42−), a comprehensive investigation into its influence on the oxidation process is lacking. Leveraging pyrite’s semiconducting nature and the electrochemical intricacies of its surface oxidation, this study employs electrochemical techniques—cyclic voltammetry (CV), Tafel polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)—to assess the effect of SO42⁻ on pyrite surface oxidation. The CV curve shows that SO42−does not change the fundamental surface oxidation mechanism of pyrite, but its redox peak current density decreases with the increase in SO42−, and the surface oxidation rate of pyrite decreases. The possible reason is attributed to SO42−adsorption onto pyrite surfaces, blocking active sites and impeding the oxidation process. Furthermore, Tafel polarization curves indicate an augmentation in polarization resistance with elevated SO42−concentrations, signifying heightened difficulty in pyrite surface reactions. EIS analysis underscores an increase in Weber diffusion resistance with increasing SO42⁻, indicating that the diffusion of Fe3+to the pyrite surface and the diffusion of oxidized products to the solution becomes more difficult. These findings will improve our understanding of the influence of SO42−on pyrite oxidation and have important implications for deepening the understanding of surface oxidation of pyrite in the natural environment.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) contains high levels of harmful heavy metal (HM) ions. To mitigate its harmful effects, this study developed novel Algae-Fungal Immobilized Bioparticles (AFIBs) using Chlorella ellipsoidea HLDA2 and Aspergillus tubingensis HLDF3. By optimizing the culture conditions of the algal-fungal system, the immobilization efficiency of the mycelial pellets formed at pH 3 reached 94.40 %. It was revealed that AFIBs effectively removed Mn(II) and Zn(II) through the mechanisms of electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange, chelation, and chemical precipitation. AFIBs outperformed both single algae and fungal systems within the Mn(II) and Zn(II) concentration range of 1 to 30 mg/L tested. The water quality index ( WQI ) of the treated AMD with AFIBs was 82.82, indicating suitability for aquatic life. In the real AMD treatment, the AFIBs decreased Mn(II) and Zn(II) concentrations to 1.832 mg/L and 1.663 mg/L, respectively, achieving removal rates of 92.97 % and 87.40 %. They also raised the pH to 8.59, adhering to the coal industry pollutant discharge standards (GB20426–2006). Thus, the novel AFIBs developed offer a sustainable solution for AMD remediation.

Mitigating acid mine drainage (AMD) at its source, specifically within rocks containing pyrite in underwater environments, poses a significant environmental challenge worldwide. Existing passivation techniques are primarily designed for open-air conditions, involving direct contact with coating materials at a solid–liquid interface, making them ineffective beneath a water barrier. In this study, we introduce a novel passivation method inspired by the design of underwater bio-adhesives. Tannic acid (TA) combined with polyethylene glycol (PEG) was employed to form a hydrophobic film directly on the pyrite surface, overcoming water resistance and addressing the limitations of current techniques. Electrochemical experiments and chemical leaching experiments were conducted to evaluate the oxidation resistance of the passivating films. TA–PEG-coated pyrite exhibited a lower oxidation rate and a higher static contact angle of 126.2°, achieving suppression efficiencies of 71.6% for total Fe release and 68.1% for total S release. A comprehensive characterization approach, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), was employed to investigate the passivation mechanism. The results of this study may provide new insights into the preparation of simpler and greener passivating agents to suppress pyrite oxidation at its source in underwater environments.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is characterized by high concentrations of Fe(II) and Fe(III), which can be harnessed for the in-situ formation of schwertmannite, enabling the efficient immobilization of toxic heavy metals. However, existing biological and chemical methods for schwertmannite synthesis face significant challenges, including low Fe(II) oxidation rates and particularly limited Fe(III) precipitation efficiency in acidic environments. In this study, we develop a visible light-assisted photo-electrochemical (PEC) system that effectively overcomes these barriers. By leveraging anodically evolved O 2 and cathodically generated OH − , we achieved facile Fe(II) oxidation at pH 3.0, and an impressive Fe(III) precipitation efficiency of 82.8 %, significantly exceeding the < 30 % efficiency reported by other methods. Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction confirmed that the generated minerals are high-purity schwertmannite. Experimental and theoretical analyses revealed that in the presence of cathodic alkalinity, Fe(III) undergoes further hydrolysis to form [(H₂O) 3 Fe(OH) 2 (SO 4 )] − species, which are thermodynamically capable of spontaneous polymerization and mineralization. Furthermore, the photoreduction of [(H₂O) 4 Fe(SO 4 ) 2 ] − within the PEC system, followed by subsequent oxidation, plays a crucial role in facilitating Fe(III) mineralization. The PEC system also effectively transformed As(III) to As(V) and Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in AMD, promoting their immobilization in the resultant schwertmannite.

Efficient removal and recovery of heavy metals (HMs) from acid mine drainage (AMD) is crucial for both protecting mine ecosystems and reclaiming valuable HMs resources. In this study, biohybrid with ferrous sulfide nanoparticles ( n FeS@GS) were biosynthesized via Geobacter sulfurreducens (GS) and employed for the removal and recovery of HMs from AMD. Initially, n FeS@GS were successfully synthesized as confirmed by TEM and exhibited high efficiencies in removing Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ in solution, respectively. This occurred because bio- n FeS and GS cells synergistically enhanced the removal of Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ . What is more, the removal efficiencies of various HMs from real AMD using n FeS@GS remained high, with documented rates of 87.9 % for Cu 2+ , 96.2 % for Pb 2+ , 95.1 % for Cd 2+ , 81.4 % for Ni 2+ , 80.9 % for Mn 2+ , and 91.9 % for Zn 2+ . Subsequent characterization of the removal function through 3D-EEM, Bio-TEM, XRD, FTIR and XPS analyses revealed substantial organic capping agents derived from GS adhering to the bio- n FeS, forming surface complexes with Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ , and Cu 2+ was reduced to Cu + /Cu 0 . Zeta potential measurements, adsorption kinetics and reduction kinetics supported that the removal mechanism involved electrostatic interactions, surface complexation, ion exchange and reduction. Finally, n FeS@GS desorption rates of HMs exceeded 90.7 %, highlighting the efficacy of n FeS@GS for recovering HMs from AMD. These findings provide valuable and practical insights into the removal and recovery of HMs from AMD using biomaterials synthesized from microorganisms.

Catalysts are critical components in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for removing recalcitrant antibiotics from water. The preparation of metal catalysts through waste conversion has gradually received growing attention owing to their sustainability and low-cost. Herein, acid mine drainage (AMD) as wastewater offers a tantalizing resource to be harnessed due to its high concentration of metal ions. To reduce the continuous consumption of metallic resources and prevent environmental pollution by heavy metals. This study, utilizing the abundance of transition metal ions in AMD, devises a straightforward methodology for adept transformation into persulfate catalysts—metal sulfides(MS) for antibiotic removal, enabling the MS/PMS system to sustainably degrade tetracycline(TC) over a wide pH range (2.0–10.0). Notably, it recycled more than 97 % of the transition metals in AMD; the removal of TC (30 mg/L) by adsorption and advanced oxidation was as high as 92 %, and MS can achieve 99.5 % removal of TC (10 mg/L) at low concentrations. Transition metal elements such as manganese and iron in the recovered catalytic material dispersed on MS played an indelible role in activating the PMS, and the non-radical pathway dominated by singlet oxygen led to the degradation of the TC. Overall, MS prepared based on the concept of treating pollution with waste had excellent TC removal capability, providing an innovative approach for the reduction of recalcitrant antibiotics (TC) and the resourceization of AMD.

Selective ion separation from acid mine drainage (AMD) under extreme acidic conditions presents a critical environmental challenge. While membrane-based technologies show promise for advancing water treatment processes, implementation in AMD treatment requires membranes that combine exceptional acid stability with precise ion sieving capabilities. Inspired by the ion retention characteristics of natural clay minerals, we have developed cation-selective membranes using vermiculite nanosheets as building blocks. The vermiculite membranes (VM) featured high acid stability and well-ordered two-dimensional nanochannels (2 Å), achieving a high H + permeation rate of 3.24 mol m −2 h −1 . The VM demonstrated exceptional selectivity between monovalent and metals ions, with a H + /Fe 3+ selectivity factor of 1284 in single-cation transport process. In complex multi-ion environments, the VM maintained stable separation performance, achieving a H + /Fe 3+ selectivity of 1000 in mixed solutions containing H + , K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ and Fe 3+ . Additionally, VM effectively blocked other common AMD metals, including Cu 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ and Mn 2+ , while maintaining stable separation performance even at extreme low pH values (pH = 1). Through integrated theoretical calculations and experiments, we revealed that the synergistic effects of ultra-confined nanochannels (4∼5 Å) and surface charge created enhanced energy barriers for trivalent ion transport, resulting in high ion selectivity. Beyond providing an effective solution for AMD remediation, this work establishes vermiculite-based membranes as promising candidates for ion separation applications.

1 Activating graphite electrodes to improve the selectivity of a 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and enhance heterogeneous Fenton catalyst loading is an effective method for restoring the water environment. Herein, the structures and properties of CO 2 -activated graphite felt (GF-CO 2 ), which achieves effective etching at high temperatures in CO 2 atmosphere, are evaluated. Oxygen-containing functional groups and defects are formed on the surface of GF-CO 2 , which improved the electrochemical behavior of GF, producing 2.86 times greater H 2 O 2 accumulation in an hour than GF-Raw. Using GFs as the anode in air-cathode fuel cells, GF@Fe 3 O 4 composites are fabricated in situ from acid mine drainage (AMD). The application of GF-CO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 as an electro-Fenton (E-Fenton) cathode exhibited efficient removal (98.8 %) and mineralizing (80.4 %) of chloroquine (CLQ) in 40 min and 240 min, respectively. Since it is favorable to enhance Fenton oxidation activities, the efficiency enhancement is attributed to the higher H 2 O 2 electrogeneration efficiency and metal content of the prepared GF-CO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 composite. The heterogeneous E-Fenton systems equipped with the GF-CO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 composite can be operated in a wide pH range and eliminate various organic pollutants . Thus, CO 2 activation of GF is a promising strategy to improve the efficiency of heterogeneous E-Fenton catalyst of GF@Fe 3 O 4 cathodes fabricated from AMD . This technology provides an environmentally friendly approach to restoring accessibility to fresh, clean water in an era where water scarcity threatens the water supply.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a type of wastewater characterized by elevated concentrations of heavy metals and metalloids, posing significant threats to ecosystems and human health. This study presents an eco-friendly method for in-situ synthesis of iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) in AMD using Excoecaria cochinchinensis leaves (EC) and green tea extracts (GT) as reducing/stabilizing agents, enabling simultaneous removal of heavy metals and metalloids. Results indicate that the two FeNPs (EC-FeNPs and GT-FeNPs) produced in AMD exhibited distinct structural and reactive properties. Firstly, the removal efficiencies of EC-FeNPs for As, Ni and Cd were 20.4 %, 15.31 %, and 11.62 %, respectively, while those of GT-FeNPs were 10.07 %, 11.7 % and 19.76 %, respectively. This indicates that EC-FeNPs were generally more effective than GT-FeNPs in removing heavy metals and metalloids from AMD. Secondly, EC-FeNPs (170.14 ± 3.22 nm) displayed larger particle sizes and more stable surface charges compared to GT-FeNPs (127.14 ± 1.94 nm), which could be attributed to differences in functional groups in the respective plant extracts. Thirdly, both EC and GT extracts acted as reductants and stabilizers in the synthesis of two FeNPs, with EC extracts providing a larger amount of phenolic compounds and carboxylic acids than GT extracts. Highlighted in this study is a novel approach for resource recovery and simultaneous removal of heavy metals and metalloids from AMD.

The clean-up of acid mine drainage (AMD) is challenging, as classical treatment including a pH neutralization step produces large amounts of toxic sludge . Here we demonstrated that removal of heavy metals through adsorption at low pH was achievable with the use of ε-MnO 2 adsorbent, which could be produced in a simple one-step process. The material, which was negatively charged even at pH 2, exhibited outstanding potential for the removal of heavy metals at strongly acidic pH. At pH 2, adsorption capacities were achieved of 172.14 mg/g towards Pb 2+ (at an initial concentration of 400 mg/L), 65.64 mg/g for Fe 3+ (at 300 mg/L) and 8.5 mg/g for Cd 2+ (at 10 mg/L). Mechanistic studies revealed that ion exchange was the main adsorption mechanism for removal of Pb 2+ , while electrostatic interaction was dominant for Fe 3+ and Cd 2+ removal. In the case of Pb 2+ adsorption, double corner sharing (DCS) complexes were formed at the edges, which promoted the dissolution of structural Mn(III), thereby generating Mn 2+ and vacancies which promoted Pb 2+ adsorption via an ion exchange process. In the case of Fe 3+ and Cd 2+ adsorption, along with electrostatic adsorption, triangle corner sharing (TCS) dominated complex formation at the intermediate vacancies, and less Mn 2+ was released. Note that the Mn 2+ was in dynamic equilibrium with structural Mn(Ⅲ) and Mn(Ⅳ). The actual AMD was retreated in 5 cycles by ε-MnO 2 , the removal rates of 100% were achieved for Pb 2+ , Fe (total) and Mn 2+ , together with 98% for Cu 2+ and 95.1% for Cd 2+ , all of which reached the national emission standards. This approach is a highly suitable option for AMD treatment that avoids toxic sludge formation.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) from sulfide-rich tailings remains a pressing environmental issue, necessitating sustainable solutions to inhibit sulfide oxidation. This study introduces a novel green-synthesized water-soluble and self-healing phosphate ester-modified styrene acrylic emulsion (PESA/Ce(dbp) 3 ) for tailings passivation, synthesized without organic solvents via aqueous emulsion polymerization. The formulation incorporates 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate phosphate (PAM-100) as a functional monomer and cerium dibutyl phosphate (Ce(dbp) 3 ) as a pH-responsive self-healing agent. Characterization (SEM, FT-IR, XPS) confirmed the formation of a hydrophobic, crosslinked passivation film on pyrite surfaces, stabilized by covalent P-O-Fe bonds. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the optimized PESA-0.5/Ce(dbp) 3 -0.15 formulation reduced corrosion current density by 96 % and achieved 85.3 % Fe 2+ and 73.1 % SO 4 2− passivation efficiencies over 24 h. The self-healing mechanism involves Ce(dbp) 3 decomposition at defect sites, generating CeO₂ nanoparticles and iron-phosphate complexes to repair film integrity. As a new type of tailings passivation agent, PESA-0.5/Ce(dbp) 3 -0.15 has the advantages of green synthesis (no organic solvent), room temperature film formation, high adhesion, high efficiency blocking oxidation, pH response self-healing, low cost, etc., which is suitable for the sustainable treatment of AMD at source.

The process of mining produces a large amount of heavy metals and high-sulfate mine water, which is the main factor leading to environmental degradation in the mining area, and the removal of heavy metals and the recovery of sulfate from mine water is a difficult problem faced by mines today. Currently, sulfate is treated as a hazardous substance and is not recycled. In this paper, the precipitation–adsorption bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) multi-technology-coupled recovery of sulfate method was used to treat mine water. The results showed that the coupling technology could remove heavy metals and sulfate in water better, while the sulfate desalination rate was about 96.8%, current efficiency was 54.2%, energy consumption was 0.823 kWh/kg, and the acid production concentration was 0.168 at an electrolyte concentration of 0.1 mol/L, an operating voltage of 12 V, an initial salt concentration of 30 g/L, and a flow rate of 3.5 mL/min. Mechanistic results showed that the precipitation–adsorption method could realize the removal of heavy metals from mine water. The BMED process realized the removal of sulfate and also the recovery of acid. The multi-technology coupling of precipitation–adsorption and bipolar membrane electrodialysis explored in this paper provides a direction for the in-depth treatment of mine water.
