Soil minerals influence the biogeochemical cycles of fluoride (F) and phosphorus (P), impacting soil quality and bioavailability to plants. However, the cooperative mechanisms of soil minerals in governing F and P in the soil environment remain a grand challenge. Here, we reveal the essential role of a typical soil mineral, montmorillonite (Mt), in the cycling and fate of F and P. The results show that the enrichment of metal sites on the Mt surface promotes the mineralization of F to the fluorapatite (FAP) phase, thereby remaining stable in the environment, simultaneously promoting P release. This differential behavior leads to a reduction in the level of F pollution and an enhancement of P availability. Moreover, solid-state NMR and HRTEM observations confirm the existence of metastable F–Ca–F intermediates, emphasizing the pivotal role of Mt surface sites in regulating crystallization pathways and crystal growth of FAP. Furthermore, the in situ atomic force microscopy and theoretical calculations reveal molecular fractionation mechanisms and adsorption processes. It is observed that a competitive relationship exists between F and P at the Mt interface, highlighting the thermodynamically advantageous pathway of forming metastable intermediates, thereby governing the activity of F and P in the soil environment at a molecular level. This work paves the way to reveal the important role of clay minerals as a mineralization matrix for soil quality management and offers new strategies for modulating F and P dynamics in soil ecosystems.

Biomineralization often inspires new approaches to the synthesis of bone repair materials. Calcium phosphate mineralization is regulated by peptides, the function of which is influenced by their secondary structure. However, the specific role of secondary structure in mineralization and the osteogenic properties of its products remain unclear. In this study, we use ion concentration to regulate the secondary structure of P11-4, a peptide with potential for clinical applications, to investigate the issue. We found that P11-4 with the helix structure changes the shape of calcium phosphate and enhances its osteogenic properties. With the increase of phosphate from 0.5 mM to 1.5 mM, the helix structure and part of the sheet structure of P11-4 transformed into a random coil structure. P11-4 induced the formation of brushite (DCPD) and the aggregation of calcium phosphate particles. P11-4 with the helix structure inhibited the formation of needle-like particles and enhanced the promotive role of calcium phosphate in osteogenic differentiation in vitro. Our findings may help to understand the role of peptides in biomineralization and design hard tissue repair materials.

The exploration and rational design of easily separable and highly efficient sorbents with satisfactory capability of extracting radioactive uranium (U)-containing compound(s) are of paramount significance. In this study, a novel magnetic hydroxyapatite (HAP) composite (HAP@ CoFe2O4), which was coupled with cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4), was rationally designed for uranium(VI) removal through a facile hydrothermal process. The U(VI) ions were rapidly removed using HAP@ CoFe2O4within a short time (i.e., 10 min), and a maximum U(VI) removal efficiency of 93.7% was achieved. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) of the HAP@CoFe2O4was 338 mg/g, which demonstrated the potential of as-prepared HAP@CoFe2O4in the purification of U(VI) ions from nuclear effluents. Autunite [Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2(H2O)6] was the main crystalline phase to retain uranium, wherein U(VI) was effectively extracted and immobilized in terms of a relatively stable mineral. Furthermore, the reacted HAP@CoFe2O4can be magnetically recycled. The results of this study reveal that the suggested process using HAP@CoFe2O4is a promising approach for the removal and immobilization of U(VI) released from nuclear effluents. Keywords:cobalt ferrite;adsorption;hydroxyapatite;mineralization;uranium(VI)

The dynamic interactions among iron (Fe) oxides and organic matter (OM) play vital roles in controlling the geochemical cycling of carbon (C) and toxic trace metals. Although the effects of OM on the Fe oxides transformation, and dynamic with toxic trace metals have been studied previously, it is still poor to understand the mechanistic and quantitative on the C sequestration during the Fe(III) mineralization process, and kinetics with hydrated Cu(II) in the acid drainage. In this study, Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and density functional theory (DFT) were used to elucidate the underlying mechanism for the fine structure of iron minerals, fulvic acid (FA) sequestration and hydrated Cu(II) coordination on Fe oxides. FA dosages played an essential role in the formation of Fe oxides, which can inhibit the formation of Fe-O octahedrons and benefit to the Fe-O tetrahedron. FA molecules were mainly sequestrated on the surfaces of Fe oxides and van der Waals forces were the main interaction between FA and Fe oxides. The hydrated Cu(II) oxides mainly distributed on the surface of iron oxides as divalent oxidation states, and feasible coordinated with phenolic hydroxyl group of FA and Fe oxides. The knowledge of the dynamic coupling between Fe oxide transformation under the effect of FA and the fate of hydrated Cu(II) on Fe oxides provided the basis for predicting the geochemical process of Fe, C and toxic trace metals.

The F and Sb co-doped Ti/SnO 2 electrode containing Sn-Sb interlayer was innovatively synthesized for electro-oxidation (EO) removal of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in water. Stronger oxidation capability and remarkably longer lifetime were performed for Ti/Sn-Sb/SnO 2 -F-Sb electrode than these similar electrodes in this study without Sn-Sb interlayer and F/Sb doping, which could removed more than 99% of PFOS ( C 0 = 100 mg L −1 ) after 120-min electrolysis. The attribute of Ti/Sn-Sb/SnO 2 -F-Sb anode and its EO mechanism were surveyed by XRD, XPS, SEM, and LSV. F and Sb co-doping could improve the stability and EO capability of the electrode, which resulted from that the smooth surface was formed conveniently to produce physically adsorbed hydroxyl radical and lead to relatively high OEP. The operating parameters of EO process were also investigated including current density, pH value, and stirring speed, which revealed the effect of these parameters on PFOS decomposition. Additionally, the mineralization parameters, TOC and F − concentration, as well as short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids were analyzed in solution during the electrolysis. Consequently, the EO pathway of PFOS was proposed through the detection of intermediates. These results manifest that Ti/Sn-Sb/SnO 2 -F-Sb anode is prospective to effectively decompose PFOS in wastewater.

The efficient activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for wastewater treatment remains a great challenge. Photocatalysis, which generates highly-reactive electrons and holes, shows great potential in activating PDS for effective degradation and deep mineralization. Herein, an electron-enriched PDI-SiO 2 photocatalyst was synthesized by covalently linking 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) onto silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) to form π-π stacked supramolecular PDI layers for efficient PDS activation. The highly dispersed PDI generates electron-enriched PDI· - under visible light, promoting the rapid activation of PDS for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. The PDI-SiO 2 activated PDS system realized a high BPA degradation rate of 0.100 min −1 and a remarkable mineralization rate of 81%. Moreover, the charge separation efficiency is significantly improved since the electrons of PDI· - are captured by PDS, boosting oxidative degradation and improving the mineralization efficiency. This work developed a novel PDS activation strategy by constructing electron-enriched photocatalyst, and revealed the mechanism of photocatalytic activation and deep mineralization.

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a typical persistent organic pollutant that is widely detected in the environment. Despite the significant efforts put into its mineralisation , there is still a lack of microorganism resources that can completely mineralise HBCD. Stable isotope analysis revealed that the Citrobacter sp . Y3 can use [ 13 C]HBCD as its sole carbon source and degrade or even mineralise it into 13 CO 2 , with a maximum conversion rate of 100% in approximately 14 days. Strain Y3 could completely mineralise HBCD, which it used as its only carbon source, and six debromination enzymes related to HBCD degradation were found in Y3, including haloalkane dehalogenase (DhaA), haloacid dehalogenase (HAD), etc. A functional gene named HBCD-hd-1 , encoding a HAD, was found to be upregulated during HBCD degradation and heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli . Recombinant E. coli with the HBCD-hd-1 gene transformed the typical intermediate 4-bromobutyric acid to 4-hydroxybutanoic acid and showed excellent degradation performance on HBCD, accompanied by nearly 100% bromine (Br) ion generation. The expression of HBCD-hd-1 in Y3 rapidly accelerated the biodegradation of HBCD. With HBCD as its sole carbon source, strain Y3 could potentially degrade HBCD, especially in a low-nutrient environment.

To address the persistent challenge of severe magnesium interference in lithium extraction from high Mg/Li ratio salt-lake brines, this study proposes an innovative two-stage process: magnesium mineralization followed by lithium extraction, enabling efficient separation and utilization of lithium and magnesium resources. Leveraging a homogeneous (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 -Mg 2+ mineralization system, we elucidate the three-stage kinetic mechanism of mineralization and the crystallographic regulation of magnesium carbonate. At low temperatures (40 °C), rod-shaped MgCO 3 ·3H 2 O crystals are formed, achieving 88 % Mg 2+ mineralization efficiency with 5 % Li + loss. Elevated temperatures (>50 °C) trigger anisotropic crystal growth, transforming the product into porous spherical 4MgCO 3 ·Mg(OH) 2 ·4H 2 O, increasing Li + loss to 15 %. Higher CO 3 2− concentrations shorten nucleation induction periods but promote surface-attached flaky structures. Optimized drying temperatures suppress dehydration-induced phase transitions, yielding high-purity products. In the subsequent lithium extraction stage, a Tributyl phosphate(TBP)-FeCl 3 -kerosene system demonstrates enhanced efficiency via Al 3+ -induced salting-out effects. With 70 % TBP −30 % kerosene and 1.2 mol/L AlCl 3 , single-stage Li + extraction efficiency reaches 67 %, while Al 3+ co-extraction remains below 4 %. FTIR analysis confirms that Al 3+ optimizes TBP coordination by releasing free Cl − , effectively mitigating Mg 2+ competition. This work provides a novel approach for synergistic CO 2 utilization and lithium-magnesium resource recovery from salt lakes, enhancing the sustainable utilization of critical minerals.

Surfaces with micrometer and nanometer sized hierarchical structures were fabricated by an one-step in situ additive controlled CaCO 3 mineralization method. After chemical modification, the surfaces with various morphologies showed superhydrophobicity in different states, which could be easily adjusted by the initial supersaturation of the mineralization solution (concentration of calcium ion and poly(glutamic acid)). Generally, the “lotus state” surface which was covered by a thick layer of tetrahedron-shaped CaCO 3 particles to exhibit a contact angle (CA) of 157±1° and a very low contact angle hysteresis (CAH) (roll-off angle=1°) was produced under high supersaturation. On the other hands, the petal-like surface with flower-shaped calcite spherulites was obtained in a relative low supersaturation, which showed both high CA (156±2°) and CAH (180°) in a “Cassie impregnating wetting state”.

Improving saline-alkali soil requires cost-efficient and stable technologies. In this study, a novel technology combining in-situ super-stable mineralization with Ca-bentonite was successfully applied to ameliorate saline-alkali soil. A simulation experiment was conducted on Ca-bentonite in solution to validate its feasibility, and in-situ mineralization using humic acid, Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O, and Ca-bentonite was performed to treat saline-alkali soil. Additionally, climate modeling and field experiments were employed to investigate the effects of this technology on soil physicochemical properties, crop growth, and crop yield. Under natural conditions, Ca-bentonite can transform into Na-bentonite via cation exchange with Na + . The results from the in-situ mineralization experiment showed that the soil pH, total content of CO 3 2− and HCO 3 − , Na + content, electrical conductivity, and bulk density decreased from approximately 10.30 to below 9.00, 7.81 to 1.53 g/kg, 7.20 to 1.51 g/kg, 2741 to 552 μS/cm, and 1.63 to 1.24 g/cm 3 , respectively. Furthermore, the germination rate of corn increased from 0 % to 83.3 % in climate simulation experiments. Field trials conducted in Inner Mongolia and Jilin, China, further demonstrated significant improvements in soil properties. The seedling emergence rates for corn and oats significantly increased, rising from 0 % to over 85 % and 95 %, respectively. Correspondingly, crop yields reached 323 kg/hm 2 for corn and 182 kg/hm 2 for oats. Together, our study introduces a novel, cost-effective, and efficient technology to enhance crop growth by mitigating soil salinity and alkalinity. This approach provides a new perspective for alleviating salt-alkali stress and contributes to the advancement of healthy and sustainable agricultural practices.

Hydrogel-based multifunctional materials have attracted much attention. In this work, novel mineralized hydrogels were fabricated through physically cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and CaCO3. The mineralized hydrogels were prepared by simply mixing CaCl2, Na2CO3, and PVP in aqueous solutions. The CO32− induced the aggregation of the PVP chains and the CaCO3 particles in situ generated in the aqueous solution worked as fillers to strengthen the hydrogels. Based on this method, other kinds of mineralized hydrogels were prepared by replacing the Ca2+ with different metal ions. The mineralized hydrogels displayed shapeable, self-healing and thixotropic properties. Moreover, the mineralized hydrogel-based sensor showed good and stable sensitivity to compressive pressure, and could be used to monitor human actions. This work presents a facile method for preparing mineralized hydrogels, which are promising for various applications due to their outstanding properties.

The construction of organic-inorganic hybrid materials has shown great potential for the development of multifunctional superior protein-based composites. However, it is still a challenge to effectively disperse and dominate the mineralization of inorganic minerals in a hybrid system. In this study, we presented a simple and green strategy to construct a biomineralized soy protein (SP)-based hybrid resin with a controllable mineralized skeleton. It was found that the Pickering emulsion served as a mineralized template efficiently inducing the uniform dispersion of inorganic particles while the incorporated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were able to regulate the mineralization process, thus forming an optimized mineralized skeleton structure. Acting as a reactive reinforcer, the regulated mineralized skeleton formed in situ interactions with SP matrix, giving rise to the multiple covalent and ionic crosslinking networks. As a result, the introduction of mineralized skeleton increased the wet shear strength of composites from 0.46 MPa to 1.21 MPa, exhibiting a 163% increment compared to the pristine SP composite. Moreover, the formation of rigid inorganic mineralized skeleton in hybrid SP-based resin facilitated an obvious improvement of thermal stability compared with the control samples. Overall, we envisage that this strategy could provide a creative strategy for the design and fabrication of superior sustainable biocomposites for engineered wood products.
