A low-temperature ionic liquid demulsifier derived from recycled PET waste plastics

Yuqi Tang,Mingzhao Zhu,Junhong Chen,Xuebiao Sun,Huan Li,Zhijie Hu,Suman Li,Qian Qu,Zejun Zhang,Yuanzhu Mi

The petroleum industry produces a large volume of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion annually, which has detrimental consequences for both the industry and the environment. Therefore, effective demulsification of these emulsions is crucial. In current work, a low-temperature demulsifier (EBTA) for W/O emulsions was synthesized using PET waste plastic as starting materials through a simple method. Chemical structure of EBTA was characterized by FT-IR and 1 H NMR. The demulsification performance was assessed using bottle-test method, and a comprehensive examination was conducted on the influence of EBTA concentration, settling time, temperature, pH value, and salinity on the demulsifying efficiency (DE). At a low temperature of 40 ℃ and a concentration of 250 mg/L, EBTA achieved a DE of 95.36% in an Emul30 emulsion, while a DE of 100% could be obtained in an Emul70 emulsion. Furthermore, EBTA demonstrated excellent tolerance for salts, acids and alkalis. In addition, the demulsification mechanism of EBTA was investigated using various techniques, such as interfacial tension (IFT), zeta potential, three-phase contact angle and coalescence time of droplets. The results revealed that EBTA had a lower IFT and was easily adsorbed on the oil–water interface. This led to the damage of the interface film and facilitated the oil–water separation. Due to the simple and safe synthesis process and remarkable demulsification performance, EBTA is a promising demulsifier for separating W/O emulsions.

Synthesis and demulsification performance of a novel low-temperature demulsifier based on trimethyl citrate

Liwei Shen,Guosheng Ai,Hanguang Liu,Lianggen Zhu,Lu Lai,Xuemin Yan,Weichu Yu,Yuanzhu Mi

A significant amount of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion is generated during petroleum extraction. However, the current commercial demulsifiers are expensive to produce and requires high demulsification temperatures, leading to increased energy and economic consumption. To enhance the efficiency of demulsifiers and reduce the cost of demulsifying W/O emulsions, we have successfully developed a novel demulsifier named TCED through a straightforward two-step process. This demulsifier features trimethyl citrate as the hydrophilic core grafted with three hydrophobic chains. Its structure was characterized using EA, FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy , and the demulsification performance was comprehensively evaluated. At a low demulsification temperature of 40 °C, TCED demonstrated a remarkable demulsification efficiency (DE) of 99.06% and 98.74% in emulsions containing water contents of 70% (E70) and 50% (E50), respectively. Especially, a DE of 100% could be obtained in both E70 and E50 emulsions at a concentration of 600 mg/L. Moreover, TCED displayed a high DE even at high salinity levels of 50,000 mg/L and across a wide pH range of 2–10. Additionally, the phase interface was consistently clear after demulsification. To investigate the demulsification mechanism of TCED, various adsorption kinetics experiments were conducted, including measurements of interfacial tension (IFT), surface tension (SFT), interfacial competitive adsorption, and stability of interfacial film. The results obtained from the experiments indicated that TCED possessed remarkable diffusion and replacement capabilities within the emulsions. As a result, it effectively disrupted the original interfacial active substances, such as asphaltenes aggregates found in crude oil. TCED exhibits a high DE at low concentration and temperature. This characteristic highlights its significant potential for low-temperature demulsification applications in the petroleum industry.

An innovative method to introduce magnetism into demulsifier

Shenwen Fang,Bin Chen,Ting Chen,Ming Duan,Yan Xiong,Peng Shi

In this work, a novel magnetic demulsifier was synthesized by a facile way within one step. The propyleneoxide-ethyleneoxide block polyether , one of the most frequently used demulsifier in petroleum industry , was endowed with the magnetism by reacting with iron (III) acetylacetonate. The as-prepared magnetic demulsifier was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The magnetic demulsifier showed excellent demulsification performance for water in crude oil emulsion. The demulsification process was revealed by using confocal microscope. Besides, the used magnetic demulsifier could be readily recycled by magnetic separation and solvent washing, and it presented excellent demulsification performance within 3 cycles. The findings in this work might provide a facile approach to prepare varieties of magnetic demulsifiers.

Demulsification of W/O emulsions using highly branched polymer demulsifier with 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate as centronucleus

Zejun Zhang,Fan Ye,Guosheng Ai,Huanyu Liu,Guanxin Zeng,Liwei Shen,Ying Yang,Huaikui Yuan,Xuening Feng,Yuanzhu Mi

A highly branched PNDC demulsifier with 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate as centronucleus was prepared by an efficient “one-pot” strategy. The product was characterized by FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, and TGA. The bottle test was performed to explore the effect of temperature, settling time, pH value, and concentration on the demulsification efficiency (DE). The DE reached an optimal value of 94.63% when the concentration of PNDC, settling time and operated temperature were 100 mg/L, 60 min and 70°C, respectively. Also, the DE could reach 91.58% when the concentration was only 20 mg/L at the same conditions. It showed that PNDC had an excellent performance in W/O emulsions with an extremely low concentration. Especially, PNDC could be used over a wide pH range (4–12) and high salinities, indicating that it had a good salt, acid and alkaline tolerance. In addition, the interfacial tension (IFT), surface tension (SFT), elastic modulus and micrograph analysis were carried out to investigate the possible mechanism. This work provides a highly branched demulsifier with high DE for the demulsification of stable W/O emulsions.

Synthesis of a low temperature ionic liquid demulsifier and its demulsification mechanism

Liwei Shen,Shi Liu,Ji'an He,Qian Qu,Yuqi Tang,Zejun Zhang,Dong Xiang,Xuemin Yan,Yuanzhu Mi

In this paper, an ionic liquid (DEBIL) was synthesized by a simple and controllable method. The chemical structure was verified by FT-IR, 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR, and the demulsification performance was observed by the bottle test. The results displayed that DEBIL had faster demulsification rate and higher demulsification efficiency (DE) than commercial demulsifiers. In addition, its production cost is lower than existing commercial demulsifiers which usually use ethylene oxide and propylene oxide as starting materials. In detail, the DE could reach 98.5 % after demulsifying with 300 mg/L of DEBIL for 2 h at 50 °C. Besides, DEBIL had a DE of greater than 95 % at high salinities (50000 mg/L), low temperature (40 °C), and wide pH range (2–10). Moreover, interfacial competitive adsorption between asphaltene and DEBIL was observed by the interfacial tension (IFT), three-phase contact angle (CA), coalescence time of droplets and elastic modulus of interfacial film. Furthermore, the possible demulsification mechanism was proposed in this study. DEBIL has both hydrophilic center and hydrophobic alkyl chains, which enables it to diffuse rapidly to the oil–water interface and reduce the IFT via replacing asphaltenes at the interface, resulting in the formation of unstable composite film and initiating the demulsification.

A hyperbranched Poly(amido amine) demulsifier with trimethyl citrate as initial cores and its demulsification performance at ambient temperature

Jiazhe Kuang,Yuanzhu Mi,Zejun Zhang,Fan Ye,Huaikui Yuan,Wangfu Liu,Xia Jiang,Yue Luo

In this work, a simple “one-pot” method was used to prepare the dendrimer-based demulsifier (PTC) with trimethyl citrate as the central core. The target product was determined by 1 H NMR, FT-IR and GPC. Then, the important influential factors for the demulsification such as the demulsifier concentration, standing time and the emulsions salinity were investigated. Standing for 120 min at room temperature, the transmittance of the separated water could reach 91.5 % by adding 50 mg/L of PTC demulsifier. It showed much lower demulsification temperature and higher demulsification efficiency than previously reported demulsifers. The coalescence process of oil droplets in emulsions can be clearly understood by microscopic images and droplets size distribution. Further, surface tensions, dynamic interfacial tensions and zeta potential provided corresponding clues to the possible demulsification mechanism. It can be concluded that the hyperbranched demulsifier has potential application for the treatment of wastewater, and the current work may be helpful to explore the demulsification mechanism.

Synthesis of a Novel Dendrimer-Based Demulsifier and Its Application in the Treatment of Typical Diesel-in-Water Emulsions with Ultrafine Oil Droplets

Xing Yao,Bin Jiang,Luhong Zhang,Yongli Sun,Xiaoming Xiao,Zhiheng Zhang,Zongxian Zhao

Waste water resulted from polymer flooding oil recovery generally has a bad impact on the subsequent process of enhanced oil recovery. Separating residual oil from oil/water (O/W) emulsion with suitable kinds of demulsifier is one strategy generally adopted by oil companies. Because of the existence of large amounts of ultrafine oil droplets with the average diameter less than 2 μm, the emulsions can be extremely difficult to break up. To solve this problem, an amine-based dendrimer demulsifier PAMAM (polyamidoamine) was synthesized in this study, and the efficiency of the demulsifier in dealing with O/W emulsions with ultrafine oil droplets was investigated. Because of its strong interfacial activity and relatively good solubility in water, the dendrimer-based demulsifier can easily attach to emulsified oil droplets in a stable diesel-in-water emulsion. The influences of temperature, settling time, and concentration of the demulsifier used on the efficiency of the demulsifier were investigated in detail. The optimal operating condition under which more than 90% oil was removed from the original emulsion by the demulsifier was found. In contrast, less than 2% oil was removed from the emulsion without applying the demulsifier under the same conditions. Micrographs showed that the PAMAM demulsifier could lead to the breakup of diesel-in-water emulsions with ultrafine oil droplets by flocculation and coalescence. The surface tension and interfacial tension at the diesel–water interface were also measured to give a basic understanding of the demulsification mechanism. Though not perfect in dealing with emulsions with the average oil droplets less than 2 μm due to the relatively high demulsifier dosage, its relatively simple synthetic procedure and mild operating conditions showed a great promise in industrial applications with unique advantages over traditional physical methods.

Demulsification of water-in-crude oil emulsion driven by a three-branch structure demulsifier

Zejun Zhang,Guosheng Ai,Guanxin Zeng,Huaikui Yuan,Ying Yang,Liwei Shen,Xuening Feng,Fan Ye,Yuanzhu Mi

A three-branch structure demulsifier (GTE-DDA) for the treatment of water-in-crude oil (W/O) emulsions was synthesized by a one-step method using glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE) as core and dodecyl amine (DDA) as branched chain. It was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectra ( 1 H NMR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Some key parameters such as the concentration of GTE-DDA, settling time, operated temperature and salinity on demulsification efficiency (DE) were systematically explored. The DE reached 87.55% after treating with 400 mg/L of GTE-DDA at 50  °C for 30 min. The demulsifying temperature was significantly lower than those reported in literatures (60-80℃). Especially, a rise in temperature could further improved the DE. In addition, GTE-DDA had an excellent salt tolerance. The possible mechanism was investigated by the interfacial tension (IFT), three-phase contact angle (CA) and microscopic observation. The comparison with commercial demulsifiers showed that GTE-DDA had a great potential for the treatment of crude oil emulsions.

Synthesis and demulsification performance of a Gemini ionic liquid with dual cationic active centers

Yu Ding,Guosheng Ai,Jinliang Du,Guangming Yu,Lu Lai,Xuemin Yan,Weichu Yu,Yuanzhu Mi

Currently, widely-used demulsifiers are primarily produced using ethylene oxide and propylene oxide as raw ingredients. The production process is hazardous and complicated, and the demulsification temperature for crude oil emulsions is typically above 60 ℃. In this work, an efficient Gemini ionic liquid demulsifier (Y12) with dual cationic active centers was prepared using a one-pot synthesis route. The structure of demulsifiers was analyzed by FTIR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The bottle test was utilized to assess the demulsification performance. The results revealed that the demulsification efficiency (DE) of Y12 could achieve 100 % at a concentration of 400 mg/L under 50 ℃ for 120 min. Emulsion with different oil content were treated with Y12 at different temperatures, the DE of C30 and C70 emulsions reached 100% at temperature of 50 ℃ and 70 ℃, respectively. Furthermore, Y12 exhibited effectiveness across a wide range of pH value and high salinity conditions. To further confirm the demulsification of Y12, some commercial demulsifiers were used for comparison. It was observed that Y12 had better performance than commercial demulsifiers, indicating its promising potential for applications. The demulsification mechanism was investigated through relative solubility numbers (RSN), interfacial tension (IFT), three-phase contact angle (TCA), zeta potential, and coalescence time of water droplets (CTW). Especially, to further investigate the demulsification mechanism of Y12 demulsifier, Y8 and Y16 with different lengths of hydrophobic chains were also prepared and used for comparison. Y12 had an excellent interfacial activity and strong capability of reducing interfacial tension, which facilitates the formation of an unstable composition interfacial film and results in the oil–water separation.

Application of α-amylase as a novel biodemulsifier for destabilizing amphiphilic polymer-flooding produced liquid treatment

Jiatong Jiang,Hairong Wu,Yao Lu,Tao Ma,Zhe Li,Derong Xu,Wanli Kang,Baojun Bai

The performance and de-emulsification mechanism of α-amylase, a novel environmental friendly biodemulsifier in petroleum industry, was investigated at room temperature. The effects of α-amylase on the viscosity of amphiphilic polymer solution and de-emulsification rate were studied by changing the concentration of α-amylase, temperature and salinity. Polymer molecular weight, Zeta potential, interfacial film strength and interfacial tension were measured to investigate the de-emulsification mechanism of α-amylase. The results show that α-amylase is an efficient biodemulsifier to increase the de-emulsification rate of amphiphilic polymer emulsions. Hydrolysis of α-amylase to amphiphilic polymers destroys the structure of the amphiphilic polymer, thereby reduces the viscosity and the interfacial film strength of the system. Once de-emulsification is completed, the lower layer, i.e. the emulsified layer, will be clear. Thus, α-amylase can be applied as an effective de-emulsifier for amphiphilic polymer-stabilized O/W emulsion.

Xuening Feng,Huanyu Liu,Hanjun Liu,Xuebin Jiang,Liwei Shen,Yuqi Tang,Qian Qu,Dong Xiang,Xuemin Yan,Yuanzhu Mi

A new type of ionic liquid demulsifier with double hydrophilic and hydrophobic chains (HDEA-TFA) was synthesized through the quaternization and replacement reaction. The chemical structure of HDEA-TFA was identified by 1 H NMR and FT-IR. It could be applied as an excellent demulsifier for two water-in-crude oil (W/O) emulsions (m water :m oil  = 70:30 and m water :m oil  = 30:70). The effect of demulsification conditions such as concentration of HDEA-TFA, settling time, demulsification temperature, pH value and salinity on the demulsifying efficiency (DE) of the W/O emulsions were discussed in detail. The results showed that the demulsifying efficiency (DE) of HDEA-TFA in the two W/O emulsions could reach 100 % with the concentration of 500 mg/L at 60 °C within 120 min. Also, HDEA-TFA had excellent acidic, alkaline and salt resistance. Moreover, several commercial demulsifiers were compared to evaluate the demulsifying performance of HDEA-TFA. The dynamic interfacial tension (IFT), surface tension (ST), three-phase contact angle (CA), elasticity modulus (EM) and zeta potential were used to investigate the demulsifying mechanism. The current study developed a new type of ionic liquid demulsifier with excellent performance and provided a reference for the research of demulsification mechanism.

An ionic liquid demulsifier with double cationic centers and multiple hydrophobic chains

Zejun Zhang,Zhansheng Wang,Hua Zhang,Qingji Wang,Yuqi Tang,Qian Qu,Liwei Shen,Yuanzhu Mi,Xuemin Yan

In this paper, an ionic liquid demulsifier (MDBr-IL) with double cationic centers and multiple hydrophobic chains was synthesized with N,N,N,N,-tetraglycidyl- 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane as starting materials. The structure of MDBr-IL was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer ( 1 H NMR). Effect of a few key factors such as concentration, demulsifying time, demulsifying temperature, salinity and pH value on the demulsifying efficiency (DE) was detailly researched in a water-in-crude oil emulsion. When the concentration of MDBr-IL was 500 mg/L, the DE reached 95.24% at 60 °C for 180 min. Also, the DE could increase to 98.64% when the demulsifying temperature was 70 °C. In addition, MDBr-IL had an eminent resistance to acid, alkali and salt. Also, the salinity could further improve the demulsification performance. Interfacial properties and wettability were employed to investigate the possible demulsification mechanism. It demonstrated that MDBr-IL is a viable demulsifier for the separation of oil-water emulsions.
