Preparation of chitosan-industrial hemp residue superfine powder-Fe @ZIF67 composite as a recyclable and low cost adsorbent for congo red and heavy metal as (V)

Chang Tanran,Lv Hongning,Tan Minghui,Zheng Shumin,Gao Wei-Bo,Wang Bao,Zhao Qingsheng,Zhao Bing

Dye and heavy metal pollution has caused serious damage to water. It became a study hotspot to treatment at domestic and abroad. The abandoned industrial hemp residue after extraction of cannabidiol (CBD) commonly causes resource waste and environmental pollution. Herein, the industrial hemp residue is reused to prepare a recyclable composite with chitosan and Fe@ZIF67 magnetic metal material for the pollutant treatment. The properties of the synthesized composite are characterized by SEM, TG, BET, FT-IR, XRD, VSM, and Zeta potential analysis. Congo red (CR) and As (V) are adopted to evaluate the adsorption properties of composite. The composite shows the best adsorption effect for CR when the addition of industrial hemp residue is 20%, and the adsorption capacity is 166 mg/g. Whereas the best adsorption effect for As (V) occurs at the addition of industrial hemp residue is 2%, and the adsorption capacity is 22 mg/g. The results reveal that the developed composite has good adsorption effect on CR and As (V), suggesting the recycling of industrial hemp residue has potential for water production and industrial wastewater treatment. It may provide useful insights into the development of recovery and utilization of industrial hemp residue. Graphical abstract

Adsorption of As(V) from Aqueous Solution on Chitosan-Modified Diatomite

Qintao Yang,Liang Gong,Lili Huang,Qinglin Xie,Yijian Zhong,Nanchun Chen

A novel chitosan (CS)-modified diatomite (Dt) was prepared by a simple mixture in the mass ratio to remove As(V) from aqueous solution in this research. The CS-modified Dt adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis. The parameters to influence the adsorption of As(V) ion were studied under such conditions as kinetics, adsorption isotherm, and pH effect. The results revealed that adsorption of As(V) was initially rapid and the equilibrium time was reached after 40 min. The optimal value of the pH was 5.0 for better adsorption. The equilibrium data were well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm compared to the Freundlich isotherm, and exhibited the highest capacity and removal efficiency of 94.3% under an initial As(V) concentration of 5 mg/L. The kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order model. In addition, 0.1 M NaOH has the best desorption efficiency of As(V) adsorbed on CS-modified Dt, and the removal efficiency of As(V) was still higher than 90% when after six adsorption-desorption cycles. These results showed that the CS-modified Dt could be considered as a potential adsorbent for the removal of As(V) in aqueous solution.

Surface defects enhance the adsorption affinity and selectivity of Mg(OH)2 towards As(V) and Cr(VI) oxyanions: a combined theoretical and experimental study

Xinwen Ou,Xueming Liu,Weizhen Liu,Wencong Rong,Jingyuan Li,Zhang Lin

The surface defects of adsorbents are generally considered to be the active sites for adsorbates, and the adsorption behaviors of a variety of pollutants in wastewater are strongly influenced by the surface defects of the adsorbents. With simple chemical and structural properties, nano-Mg(OH)2 exhibits a high adsorption affinity and selectivity to heavy metals from wastewater. The insight into the surface complex structures of heavy metals on the Mg(OH)2 surface is fundamental for both the mechanism and application of defective adsorbents in wastewater treatment. In this study, the impact of surface defects of Mg(OH)2 nanoplates on the structure, energy, and adsorption amounts of toxic heavy metal oxyanions (HAsO42− and CrO42−) was investigated by combining the first-principles calculations and batch experiments. The first-principles calculations illustrated that the heavy metal oxyanions can be steadily incorporated into the surface defects to form inner-sphere complexes. The incorporated heavy metal oxyanions have strong charge–charge and chemical bonding interactions with the surface defect sites, which are much stronger than the hydrogen bonding interactions with the surface OH sites. Moreover, the adsorption affinity of surface defects towards heavy metal oxyanions is stronger than that towards other oxyanions (e.g. SO42− and NO3−), indicating the high adsorption selectivity of heavy metal oxyanions over other oxyanions. Batch adsorption experiments verified that the adsorption of defect-rich Mg(OH)2 adsorbents towards heavy metal ions, e.g., As(V) and Cr(VI), was favorable even under the condition of low concentration (mg L−1 level). These findings reveal the significance of surface defects of Mg(OH)2 for extracting As(V) and Cr(VI) from low-concentration solutions. The proposed strategy of surface defect-fabrication should provide a useful insight into designing effective adsorbents for the selective extraction of heavy metal oxyanions at low concentration.

Simultaneous removal of As(V)/Cr(VI) and acid orange 7 (AO7) by nanosized ordered magnetic mesoporous Fe-Ce bimetal oxides: Behavior and mechanism

Zhipan Wen,Yalei Zhang,Gang Cheng,Yingru Wang,Rong Chen

In this study, nanosized ordered magnetic mesoporous Fe-Ce bimetal oxides (Nanosized-MMIC) with highly well-ordered inner-connected mesostructure were successfully synthesized through the KIT-6 template method. This Nanosized-MMIC displayed excellent adsorption capacities for As(V), Cr(VI) and AO7, and the corresponding calculated maximum adsorption capacities of material were 111.17, 125.28 and 156.52 mg/g, respectively. As(V) and Cr(VI) removal by Nanosized-MMIC were slightly dependent on the ionic strength but highly solution pH-dependent, the coexistent silicate and phosphate ions competed remarkably with both As(V) and Cr(VI) for the adsorption active site. Mechanisms indicated As(V) and Cr(VI) formed inner-sphere complexes on Nanosized-MMIC interface via the electrostatic interaction and surface complexation, while the total organic carbon (TOC) change demonstrated that AO7 could be removed completely and no organic intermediates formed through the adsorption process. In addition, Nanosized-MMIC also possessed superior adsorption performance in As(V)/Cr(VI)-AO7 binary systems, and the reusable and regeneration properties indicated that the obtained nanomaterials could maintain at a comparatively high level after several recycling. Finally, fixed-bed experiments suggested the Nanosized-MMIC was expected to have a promising excellent nano-adsorbent with high application potential for co-existed toxic heavy metals and organic dyes removal in practical wastewater treatment .

Construction of salicylaldehyde analogues as turn-on fluorescence probes and their electronic effect on sensitive and selective detection of As(V) in groundwater

Lina Wang,Yong Li,Xike Tian,Chao Yang,Liqiang Lu,Zhaoxin Zhou,Yunjie Huang,Yulun Nie

Arsenic contamination in groundwater is a severe and major environmental problem that endangers public health. As such, a sensitive and selective methodology for the detection of this toxic metalloid must be urgently developed. Aldimine condensation reactions of p-phenylenediamine with salicylaldehyde derivatives yielded “turn-on” fluorescence probes (HBHP, HBBP and HMBP) for the detection of As(V) with high sensitivity. Among these, as a typical AIEgen, HBHP exhibits the highest detection sensitivity. The detection limit of HBHP for As(V) was calculated to be 0.88 ppb, which is due to its higher ability to form intermolecular hydrogen bonds to convert twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) into planar intramolecular charge transfer (PICT) and its higher molecular planarity triggered by specific electronic effects. Job's plots and DFT theoretical studies indicate that HBHP binds to As(V) with a stoichiometry of 1 : 2, and the binding constant was determined using the Benesi–Hildebrand equation to be 4.26 × 104 M2. Commonly existing anions and cations in groundwater exhibited no interference with the selective detection of As(V). Spiking and recovery tests of HBHP in the presence of As(V) in actual water samples gave satisfactory experimental results. Our research would provide novel principles of molecular construction and materials for the detection of As(V) in groundwater.

Removal of arsenic(V) from aqueous solutions using sulfur-doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles

Junhui Liu,Long Kong,Xueqiong Huang,Min Liu,Liang Li

In this study, magnetic sulfur-doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4:S NPs) were applied as adsorbents for the removal of As(V). Fe3O4:S NPs were fabricated by a two-step route, which included low-temperature mixing and high-temperature sintering. The as-prepared Fe3O4:S NPs could effectively remove As(V) under a wide pH range of 2–10 and presented a high As(V) adsorption capacity of 58.38 mg g−1, which was much better than undoped Fe3O4 nanoparticles (20.24 mg g−1). Adsorption experiments exhibited a pseudo-second-order model of adsorption kinetics and a Langmuir isotherm model of adsorption isotherms. Additionally, the coexisting ions such as NO3−, SO42−, and CO32− had no significant effect on As(V) adsorption and the adsorbent worked well in actual smelting wastewater. XPS and FTIR spectra of Fe3O4:S NPs before and after As(V) adsorption showed that Fe–OH groups played a significant role in the adsorption mechanisms. Moreover, the magnetic Fe3O4:S NPs adsorbents after adsorption could be rapidly separated from wastewater with an external magnetic field. Therefore, Fe3O4:S NPs could be an ideal candidate for the removal of As(V) from water.

Amorphous Mn-La oxides immobilized on carbon sphere for efficient removal of As(Ⅴ), Cd(Ⅱ), and Pb(Ⅱ): Co-adsorption and roles of Mn species

Yinghao Xue,Wei Teng,Yanyan Chen,Qian Ma,Xiaoqian Chen,Yu Sun,Jianwei Fan,Yuping Qiu,Rongbing Fu

Simultaneous removal of cation (e.g., Pb(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ)) and oxyanion (e.g., As(Ⅴ)) heavy metals have attracted increasing interest for adsorption applications due to the complexity of heavy metal polluted groundwater. Manganese-lanthanum binary oxides immobilized on hydrothermal carbonization carbon (Mn x La 1-x @HTCC) were therefore rationally designed in this work, and the Mn-La oxides immobilized on HTCC exhibited more uniform dispersion compared to bulk phase. In single adsorption systems, superior adsorption of different heavy metals could be achieved by tuning the molar ratio of Mn to La, and Mn leaching was reduced by ∼ 75% compared with Mn@HTCC (without La doping). In the coexisting systems, the simultaneous presence of As(Ⅴ) and Pb(Ⅱ) greatly enhanced adsorption of both two heavy metals, while competition was observed in the coexistence of As(Ⅴ) and Cd(Ⅱ). By analyzing the “release-readsorption” phenomenon of Mn and the variation of Mn valence during adsorption, the different roles of Mn species in the removal of three heavy metals were proposed. Finally, high-speed flow adsorption column experiments confirmed that the Mn x La 1-x @HTCC composite can effectively and continuously adsorb heavy metals accompanied by trace Mn leaching content. Overall, this study indicates the potential of Mn-La carbon composites as a novel adsorbent in groundwater remediation.

One-step facile hydrothermal synthesis of flowerlike Ce/Fe bimetallic oxides for efficient As(V) and Cr(VI) remediation: Performance and mechanism

Zhipan Wen,Jun Ke,Jinlei Xu,Sheng Guo,Yalei Zhang,Rong Chen

Toxic heavy metals As(V) and Cr(VI) removal from water environment has becoming more and more urgent due to their adverse health effect. In this study, the flowerlike Ce/Fe bimetallic oxides (CFBO), which combined the superiority of three-dimensionally (3D) hierarchical architectures and bimetallic synergistic effect, were innovatively designed and synthesized via one-step facile template-free hydrothermal method. Compared with pure iron oxides (PIO), the obtained CFBO exhibited excellent performance for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal, and the maximum adsorption capacities toward As(V) and Cr(VI) increased from 49.09 mg/g to 164.94 mg/g and 38.07 mg/g to 127.42 mg/g, respectively. Both As(V) and Cr(VI) removal efficiency decreased with an increasing solution pH due to the pH zpc of CFBO, but exhibited slightly change with coexisting anions except for SiO 3 2− and PO 4 3− ions. Combined results of FT-IR and XPS, it was concluded that the abundant hydroxyl groups existed on the surface of CFBO played a key role in the high uptake of As(V) and Cr(VI), and subsequently formed inner-sphere surface complexes. Attractively, the remarkable removal efficiency of As(V)/Cr(VI) in column experiments revealed that the CFBO had great potential for practical application.

Cobalt-loaded resin can effectively remove arsenic in wastewater

Zhixu Lu,Xuezhu Li,Xianjin Qi

Most current arsenic(As(V)) removal technologies are designed for low-As(V) wastewater. Consequently, the efficacy of treating high-As(V) wastewater with these technologies is generally unsatisfactory. Here, the Cobalt(Co)-loaded resin removal of As(V) in wastewater and its mechanism are discussed. Rapid adsorption and a slow equilibrium were achieved during the reaction, and the As(V) removal efficiency exceeded 99% within 0–30 min with an initial As(V) concentration of 100   mg/L. The adsorption capacity of the Co-loaded resin was as high as 116 mg/g. The Co-loaded resin has the best As(V) removal efficiency when the pH = = 8. The adsorption kinetics of the Co-loaded resin material revealed the adsorption behavior. FTIR and XPS studies showed that As(V) was removed on the Co-loaded resin material, and As(V) was primarily removal through ion exchange adsorption and chemical co-precipitation. Thus, this Co-loaded resin material provides a simple and effective means to remove As(V) from high-As(V) wastewater.

Adsorption of arsenic (V) by biologically reductive lanthanum-loaded bentonite: Transportation and injection removal experiments

Dayong Luo,XiaoSong Tian,Ruxiang Qin

Iron reducing bacterium Acidiphilium cryputum JF-5 was used to biologically load lanthanum on bentonite (BLB) to remove arsenic(V) from solution. By biological reductive release of iron from bentonite and lanthanum loading, new lanthanum-loaded bentonite was prepared and the adsorption efficiency of arsenic(V) was improved from 7.87 mg/g to 22.69 mg/g in bath experiment. The mobilization of the dispersed biologically loaded lanthanum bentonite particles can be described by the Convection-Dispersion Equation. The breakthrough ability of biologically lanthanum-loaded bentonite (BLB) increased by 5.5 times when increasing flow velocities from 90 mL/h to 360 mL/h. When injected BLB into arsenic(V)-containing pre water of quartz column, the concentration of arsenic(V) could quickly decrease the initial concentration of arsenic(V) from 2000 μg/L to lower than limit for drinking water and keep relative stable. Meanwhile, the hydraulic conductivity of treatment system is also improved compared to prinstine bentonite due to iron-deficient in BLB. The results suggest that biologically load lanthanum bentonite may be an effective modified mineral for remediating arsenic(V)-containing soil.

Effective removal and expedient recovery of As(V) and Cr(VI) from soil by layered double hydroxides coated waste textile

Shifeng Zhao,Zhaosong Li,Haiyan Wang,Hanhan Huang,Caifeng Xia,Derui Liang,Junshan Yang,Qian Zhang,Zilin Meng

Mg-Al layered double hydroxides coated waste textile (MgAl-LDH@WT) was prepared by an in-suit method for the separation of toxic metal ions such as As(V) and Cr(VI) from soil samples. Kinetics studies of As(V)/Cr(VI) removal by MgAl-LDH@WT with different Mg/Al ratio were well described by intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-second-order model. Adsorption isotherm data of As(V)/Cr(VI) yielded a better accordance of Langmuir model, manifesting that accessible adsorption site was the main influence factor and the removal of As(V)/Cr(VI) was a charge-limited process. The adsorption capacity was 69.8 mg/g, 49.8 mg/g, 45.6 mg/g and 38.2 mg/g by Mg 2 Al-LDH@WT, Mg 3 Al-LDH@WT, Mg 4 Al-LDH@WT and LDHs, and for Cr(VI) were 27.5 mg/g, 24.9 mg/g, 19 mg/g and 6.8 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption behavior of As(V) and Cr(VI) co-existing in soil indicated that As(V) possess a preferential adsorption rather than Cr(VI) by Mg 2 Al-LDH@WT, and molecular simulation was selected to explain the results of competitive relationship by bonding energy and variation of bond length. The effect of co-existing ions, column leaching experiment and recycle experiment for practical performance assessment were also examined, and these results revealed a high stability and a good partition capability. The performance of excellent removal and convenient recovery suggested a promising strategy in anionic heavy metals contaminated soil.

Removal of As(V) by iron-based nanoparticles synthesized via the complexation of biomolecules in green tea extracts and an iron salt

Zhicheng Wu,Xiaobao Su,Zhang Lin,Nasreen Islam Khan,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

While iron-based nanoparticles ( n Fe) prepared using green tea extracts have been successfully used to degrade many organic contaminants , their application to remove As(V) remains limited. Thus, in this work, n Fe (GT-1) prepared using a green tea extract was used to removal As(V). The maximum adsorption capacity of GT-1 for As(V) was 19.9 mg g −1 at 298 K. The formation of GT-1 and the removal mechanism of As(V) by GT-1, was examined using XRD, TEM and SEM, which showed that GT-1 was composed of amorphous particulates sized between 50 and 100 nm. GC–MS and LC-MS analysis also showed that biomolecules presented in the green tea extract, including polyphenols and L-theanine, participated in the formation of GT-1. Mössbauer spectral analysis confirmed that an organo-Fe(III) complex was formed due to the reaction between biomolecules and Fe(III). FTIR and XPS showed that the adsorption of As(V) by GT-1 occurred both via complexation with Fe(III) in GT-1 and via coordination of As(V) with free hydroxyl groups on the surface of GT-1. Batch experiments showed that adsorption was spontaneous and conformed to the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Finally, mechanisms for the formation of GT-1 and the removal of As (V) by GT-1 were proposed.
