The increased discharge of organoarsenic to natural waters, brings significant risks to ecosystems and human health. It is curial to rapidly transform organoarsenic to harmless arsenate (As(V)) before conventional coagulation-sedimentation treatment. In this study, the roxarsone (ROX) was destroyed to form As(V) with almost 100 % transformation rate and reaction rate of 0.43 min −1 via the CoFe 2 O 4 /peracetic acid (PAA) system. Specifically, PAA was primarily activated to form singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and organic radicals (R-O·) by Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycle existed on the CoFe 2 O 4 surface, the presence of iron (Fe) in the CoFe 2 O 4 facilitated the transformation of Co(III) to Co(II), and then that reactive oxygen species (ROS) was employed to mineralize ROX. The presence of common anions, and natural organic matters (NOM) hardly inhibit the degradation of ROX. Furthermore, the catalytic efficiency of CoFe 2 O 4 /PAA system remained above 94 % after five cycles. These findings suggest that the CoFe 2 O 4 /PAA system is a promising technique for enhanced arsenic decontamination.

Roxarsone (ROX) is extensively used as a feed additive which tends to leave toxic inorganic arsenic (As) in the natural environment. A composite of reduced graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes was impregnated with goethite designated as α-FeOOH@GCA and tested as an integrated catalyst and adsorbent for ROX decontamination. Nearly 100% of the ROX was transformed in α-FeOOH@GCA activating persulfate (PS) under UV 365 irradiation system at relatively low dosage of the α-FeOOH@GCA catalyst (250 mg L −1 ) in 120 min. The As(V) released in the ROX oxidation was simultaneously adsorbed onto the surface of the α-FeOOH@GCA. A possible ROX transformation pathway is proposed. The As(V) adsorbed on catalyst was recovered and used to form an efficient Ag 3 AsO 4 photocatalyst. This work further extends the oxidation-adsorption technology in solving organoarsenical contamination without producing secondary pollution.

The elimination of arsenic pollution has attracted increasing concerns due to its toxicity and severe carcinogenicity. Herein, we proposed an in-situ crystal growth strategy without surfactant to fabricate MIL-88B uniformly anchored on the surface of MnO 2 /GAC (MIL-88B/MnO 2 /GAC). Such innovative MIL-88B/MnO 2 /GAC nanostructured composites not only exhibited the synergetic functions of simultaneously oxidizing As(III) and adsorbing the generated As(V), but also effectively reduced the cost of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) adsorbents. Impressively, the as-prepared sample achieved remarkably boosted As(III) removal capacity of 15.13 mg g −1 compared to 4.1 mg g −1 of MnO 2 /GAC composite and 2.1 mg g −1 of GAC , which was mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect between the excellent adsorption abilitiy of MIL-88B and oxidation property of MnO 2 /GAC. Owing to the unique construction and properties, the constructed MIL-88B/MnO 2 /GAC composites presented a desirable As(III) removal ability under a wide pH scope of 2 to 10. Moreover, the possible mechanism of the synergistic removal over MIL-88B/MnO 2 /GAC was elucidated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron spin resonance (ESR) and radical trapping experiment. This work not only offers a superior bifunctional catalyst for high-efficient removal of arsenic, but also provides a new perspective for rational construction of MOF derivatives for their further applications.

Arsenic-contaminated red mud (As-RM) is a hazardous waste with limited recycling approaches. Generally, through reductive roasting and magnetic separation, RM could be transformed into Fe-rich concentrate for Fe resource recovery. However, due to the poor thermostabilization of As species, reductive roasting of As-RM would cause severe As volatilization pollution together with high As leaching risks from heated residue. Herein, a novel johnbaumite-based As thermostabilization strategy is developed for clean Fe resources recycling from As-RM. We found that in the presence of Ca(OH) 2 , the As species in As-RM could be immobilized as thermostable and insoluble johnbaumite (Ca 5 (AsO 4 ) 3 OH) at 900 °C, effectively enhancing the As thermostability and insolubility. Introducing 1.5% Ca(OH) 2 into As-RM suppressed the As volatilization ratio from 60.3% to 15.7% during reductive roasting. Meanwhile, the As leaching concentration of the reduced residue was reduced to < 100 µg/L, thus satisfying the Japanese wastewater discharge standard. A concentrate with approximately 67.5% total iron grade was obtained from As-RM through this clean reductive roasting and magnetic separation. Overall, the approach introduced in this work effectively reduces the As diffusion pollution deriving from As-RM thermal reduction, which could contribute to hazardous As-RM reutilization, clean Fe resources recovery, and As pollution mitigation.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising soil contamination amendment agents for its efficient absorbing abilities. However, the application of LDHs in remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil are to be developed. In this study, we synthesized MgAlFe-LDHs by introducing Fe 3+ into interlayer of the MgAl-LDHs using co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were employed to characterized the micro structure of MgAlFe-LDHs. And then pot incubation and pilot experiments were conducted to investigate the heavy metal removal efficiencies of MgAlFe-LDHs and its potential being applicated in As contaminated soil amendment from a deserted arsenic plant site. Incubation experiments showed that the MgAlFe-LDHs had a higher removal efficiency on arsenic contaminated soil compared to other agents. And the results of pilot experiments indicated that the MgAlFe-LDHs can immobilize up to 90% of the As in soil with 5% (w/w) addition. Based on the results above, MgAlFe-LDHs are promising materials amending the heavy metal contaminated soil with practical application value.

Advanced nanotechnologies for efficient arsenic decontamination remain largely underdeveloped. The most abundant inorganic arsenic species are neutrally-charged arsenate, As(III), and negatively-charged arsenite , As(V). Compared with As(V), As(III) is 60 times more toxic and more difficult to remove due to high mobility. Herein, an electrochemical filtration system was rationally designed for one-step As(III) decontamination . The key to this technology is a functional electroactive carbon nanotube (CNT) filter functionalized with sea urchin-like FeOOH. With the assistance of electric field, CNT-FeOOH anodic filter can in situ transform As(III) to less toxic As(V) while passing through. Then, as-produced As(V) could be effectively sequestrated by FeOOH. The sufficient exposed sorption sites, flow-through design, and filter’s electrochemical reactivity synergistically guaranteed a rapid arsenic removal kinetic. The underlying working mechanism was unveiled based on systematic experimental investigations and theoretical calculations. The system efficacy can be adapted across a wide pH range and environmental matrixes. Exhausted CNT-FeOOH filters could be effectively regenerated by chemical washing with diluted NaOH solution. Outcomes of the present study are dedicated to provide a straightforward and effective strategy by integrating electrochemistry , nanotechnology, and membrane separation for the removal of arsenic and other similar heavy metals from water bodies.

Graphene-based material is widely used to remove arsenic from water due to its layered structure with high surface area. Here, we have successfully synthesized Fe-La bimetallic modified graphite sheet materials to more efficiently remove As(III) from aqueous solution. The results showed that Fe-La-graphite sheets (FL-graphite sheets) have a larger specific surface area (194.28 m 2 ·g −1 ) than graphite sheets (2.80 m 2 ·g −1 ). The adsorption capacity of FL-graphite sheets for As(III) was 51.69 mg·g −1 , which was higher than that of graphite sheets (21.91 mg·g −1 ), La-graphite sheets (26.06 mg·g −1 ), and Fe-graphite sheets (40.26 mg·g −1 ). The FL-graphite sheets conformed to the Freundlich and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 53.62 mg·g −1 . The removal process obeys intra-particle diffusion and pore diffusion for As(III). The results of batch adsorption experiments and characterization analyses demonstrated that oxidation, ligand exchange, and inner sphere complexation mechanisms involved in the adsorption of FL-graphite sheets to As(III) in comparison with graphite sheets. In addition, electrostatic attraction mechanism was found vital in the adsorption. Ecotoxicity assessment revealed that FL-graphite sheets have little influence on rice germination and growth, but reduced the toxicity of As(III) to rice. Therefore, the FL-graphite sheets have good practical application value in purifying As(III) polluted water with litter ecotoxicity.

Arsenic pollution has caused worldwide attention due to its mandatory toxicity. Chemical structures of the adsorbent and arsenic species greatly influence the arsenic adsorption efficiency. The goethite impregnated graphene oxide (GO)-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) aerogel (α-FeOOH@GCA) was prepared via a facile self-assembly method of GO-CNTs induced by in-situ Fe 2+ reduction. α-FeOOH@GCA showed excellent adsorption capacities of 56.43, 24.43 and 102.11 mg g −1 for As(V), DMA and p -ASA comparing with that of 25.71, 8.03 and 14.52 mg g −1 of pristine α-FeOOH, respectively. The incorporation of GO-CNTs not only hinders the aggregation of GO-CNTs but also inhibits the growth of α-FeOOH nanoparticles greatly facilitating the diffusion and adsorption capacity of arsenic species. α-FeOOH@GCA shows wide favorable application pH for arsenic species adsorption, high adsorption kinetics and excellent reusability. The phosphate and silicate anions compete with the arsenic species for active adsorption sites due to the similar anionic structure. Based on FTIR spectra, arsenic species were proven to form inner sphere complex on the surface of α-FeOOH@GCA through different ligand exchanging mechanism greatly dependent on the molecular structures of arsenic species. The results show that α-FeOOH@GCA could be used as promising adsorbent for arsenic purification in water system.

This study explores the potential of low-cost biochar modified with ferrihydrite and goethite for the remediation of heavily As-polluted groundwater. Combining batch experiments and synchrotron radiation-based characterization, we investigated the mechanisms of As(III) adsorption and oxidation. The modified biochars exhibited significant adsorption capacities, achieving fitted q max of 45.7 ± 3.9 mg/g for ferrihydrite-modified biochar (FhGM) and 20.2 ± 1.5 mg/g for goethite-modified biochar (GtGM) at a dosage of 1.0 g/L and an initial concentration of 10 mg/L As(III) over 24 h. Biochar facilitated approximately 30 % As(V) generation from As(III) due to enhanced electron transfer. Moreover, over 90 % of As(III) was oxidized to As(V) following the addition of H 2 O 2 , with scanning transmission X-ray microscopy revealing the distribution of As(III), and As(V) on the solid phase. In the GtGM-H 2 O 2 system, reactive oxidation species, primarily O 2 •– , served as the main oxidant. In the FhGM-H 2 O 2 system, Fe(IV) likely acted as the primary oxidizing agent. Column experiments with 0.64 g of FhGM demonstrated that, when treating 50 mg/L As-contaminated groundwater, the effluent total As concentration remained below the maximum allowable limit of 10 μg/L after 21 h. Furthermore, in the presence of H 2 O 2 , the system managed to treat 200 mg/L As-contaminated groundwater, and the effluent total As concentration exceeded 10 μg/L after 11 h. This study provides valuable insights and practical results for the remediation of high-concentration arsenic-contaminated groundwater, highlighting the effectiveness of iron-modified biochar in this application.

In the context of the increasing global problem of arsenic (As) contamination in soils, an efficient remediation method is urgently needed to alleviate it. In this study, a composite washing agent consisting of 0.2 mol L −1 dithionite and 0.05 mol L −1 tartaric acid (TA) in a 1:1 mixing volume ratio was prepared and used in the remediation of arsenic-contaminated soils. The results showed that the removal efficiency of arsenic was 62.47% in soil 1 at a concentration of 134 mg kg −1 and 70.08% in soil 2 at a concentration of 70 mg kg −1 . Dithionite achieved greater release of the arsenic associated with amorphous hydrous oxides of iron and aluminium (F3) and arsenic associated with crystalline hydrous oxides of iron and aluminium (F4) forms of arsenic by the reductive dissolution of iron oxides , while also reducing Fe 3+ . TA released some arsenic in the specifically adsorbed (F2) and F3 forms through acidic effects. The mechanism of arsenic removal from the composite washing agent was found to be a synergistic effect between dithionite and TA. The TA complexation formed Fe-TA complexes with Fe 2+ in solution, preventing the formation of new iron mineral phases and reducing the readsorption or precipitation of arsenic to the soil surface. Meanwhile, the formation of Fe-TA complexes kept the iron oxides dissolved, allowing more iron oxide-bound arsenic (F3 +F4) to be released. This study showed that combining TA with dithionite is a promising technology for remediating arsenic-contaminated soils because of its high efficiency.

Arsenic (As) contamination of soils adversely affects human health and ecosystems and is an environmental issue of serious concern worldwide. Efficient and economical remediation methods are urgently needed. In this research, a chitosan-modified scrap iron filings (CFF) composite was prepared by using industrial scrap iron filings and chitosan to stabilize As-contaminated soil. The optimal modification conditions were explored, and CFF was applied to As-contaminated soil to investigate its remediation effect and stabilization mechanism. The results showed that the optimal preparation conditions of CFF were chitosan concentration of 3.75 % (w/w), chitosan to scrap iron filings ratio of 1:1, optimal modification temperature of 40 °C, iron filings particle size of 35–80 mesh, and 10 % glutaraldehyde crosslinking for 6 h, and the stabilization efficiency of As was 73.98 %. The adsorption behavior of CFF was consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, and the best adsorption effect was achieved at pH = 5–6. The possible mechanisms of As stabilization by CFF were surface complexation, hydrogen bonding synergy, precipitation, electrostatic attraction, and van der Waals forces.

Heavy metal polluted soil remediation is a global concern. Therefore, it is urgently needed to develop new ways for soil remediation . Although the electrochemical method is a simple, efficient, and promising process, the reaction mechanism of arsenic (As) in contaminated soil treated by the electrochemical method is rarely noticed. Herein, electrochemical techniques were developed for As removal from contaminated soil, which can be effectively achieved by using a Fe sacrificial anode to form Fe 3+ species and by combining manganese oxide in soils for remediation. The results showed that the As was changed from an unstable to a stable state, and As pollutions were effectively removed by this electrochemical method. Further, the dissolution kinetics of Fe and Mn oxides , arsenic reaction kinetics and the phase transformation process during the remediation process were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) methods. From the simulation experiments, it was found that As(III) should be oxidized by Mn 4+ and Fe 3+ to form As(V), and As(V) was the main reactant with Fe and Mn oxides for As removal. Consequently, the current work may provide a new insight into solve As contamination in soil, and provide some new insights into the interaction mechanism between multiple components.
