The development of silicone-based superhydrophobic coatings is highly desirable for antifouling applications. However, achieving durable coatings remains challenging. Superhydrophobicity is often lost after mechanical damage or microorganism penetration, which compromises the static antifouling ability. Herein, we propose a straightforward strategy for fabricating a silicone coating (F-PIBO-40 %) based on a simple condensation reaction between a novel silane telomer (F-PIBO) and α,ω-dihydroxypolydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Moreover, nano-sized silica particles (SiO 2 ) were uniformly incorporated to construct micro-nano rough structures and enhance the durability. The mechanical and environmental durability, self-cleaning, antibacterial and anti-diatom performance were comprehensively characterized. The results revealed that even after 400 damage cycles (8000 cm of wear), the contact angle remained above 165°. The superhydrophobic surface could be simply renewed through friction, minimizing the cost of use and replacement. Furthermore, the coating retained its superhydrophobic properties after exposure to UV radiation, hot/cold temperature cycling, and immersion in various polar and non-polar solvents. The synergistic effects of the isobornyl groups and the superhydrophobicity contributed to the excellent self-cleaning, antibacterial, and anti-diatom performance. We believe that this work provides a new approach for the preparation of multi-environmentally reliable, durable, and surface-renewable superhydrophobic antifouling coatings.

Silicone-based fouling release coatings (FRCs) have shown great promise as an environmentally friendly antifouling technology, while inferior mechanical properties and insufficient substrate adhesion have hindered their further application. We focused on enhancing the mechanical robustness of silicone-based coating through the synergistic effects of hydrogen bonding , π-π aromatic interaction and covalent bonding. The resulting silicone-based coating displayed a low surface energy of 23 mJ/m 2 and improved mechanical strength and substrate adhesion, offering values up to 6.4 MPa (9.1 times higher) and 2.87 MPa (25.7 times higher), respectively. Additionally, the modified coating demonstrated a tear strength of 9.8 kN/m and mass loss only about 30 mg after enduring 10,000 wear cycles. Alkoxysilane-functionalized polyethylene glycol and quaternary ammonium salt were grafted into the cross-linking structure to make them anchored to the networks and migrated to the surface layer in seawater without releasing. The coating provided 99.1% antibacterial efficiency and effective antidiatom performance (≤ 11.2 cell/mm 2 ). After a 12-month marine field test , the developed film showed only 20% micro bio-fouling compared to 100% fouling coverage on the PDMS surface. By combining improved mechanical properties with antifouling characteristics, this new multifunctional silicone-based FRC exhibits tremendous potential for sustainable marine antifouling coating application .

Introduction: Silicone-based low-surface-energy antifouling coatings are environmentally friendly, but their widespread application is hindered by the inherent challenge of achieving a balance between mechanical durability and antifouling efficacy. Methods: This study developed a novel multifunctional anchoring material, N,N’-bis(12-hydroxystearoyl)-1,3-phenylenediamine (A), via a condensation reaction. Silicone antifouling coatings were then synergistically modified with A, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), followed by room-temperature crosslinking to form a composite coating. Results: The incorporation of 1% A significantly enhanced the coating’s performance: surface roughness was reduced by 33% (from 1.12 μm to 0.75 μm), the water contact angle increased from 118.2° to 122.7°, and tensile strength was improved by 85% (from 1.08 MPa to 2.00 MPa). The elastic modulus increased by 130%, while underwater friction decreased by 64% (from 2.41 ± 0.09 N to 0.87 ± 0.04 N). The coating demonstrated exceptional durability, with an average surface roughness (Sa) remaining below 2.65 μm after 2000 abrasion cycles. Furthermore, it exhibited outstanding self-cleaning efficiency (>97.1 ± 0.87%) and antibacterial rates (>94.5 ± 1.78%). Marine field tests confirmed effective antifouling performance for over 90 days during peak fouling season.Discussion: The synergistic effect of A, MoS2, and PTFE successfully overcame the key limitations of traditional low-surface-energy coatings—poor mechanical strength and weak wear resistance. This work provides a breakthrough in designing high-performance, durable antifouling coatings with strong potential for practical applications, particularly in underwater cleaning robotics.

Due to the inherent differences in surface tension between water and oil, it is a challenge to fabricate air superhydrophilic-superoleophobic materials despite their promising potential in the field of oil/water separation. Herein, a facile approach is developed to fabricate air superhydrophilic-superoleophobic SiO 2 coating by combination of controllable modifying SiO 2 nanoparticle surface by both hydrophilic groups (i.e., –OH groups) and oleophobic groups (i.e., fluorinated groups) with constructing porous and hierarchical structures. Hydroxyl-modified SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) are synthesized using a base-catalysed procedure in the presence of ammonia or NaOH. Chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC) is introduced to bind SiO 2 by forming a unique hydrogen bond between HACC and –OH, followed by adding pentadecafluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to complex with HACC to form fluorinated groups. The SiO 2 coatings are fabricated on various substrates (e.g., glass, foam and Cu mesh) by spraying procedure and characterized using SEM, FTIR, XPS, etc. The contact angles of oils (e.g., pump oil, castor oil , corn oil, hexadecane and bean oil) and water on the coatings are over 150° and close to 0°, respectively. By optimization, the representative SiO 2 -coated Cu mesh displayed high - efficiency of 99.2% in separating water from mixture of water/pump oil, and high penetration flux of 1.41 × 10 4 L·m −2 ·h −1 . Besides, the coating maintains its superhydrophilic-superoleophobic properties even after 110 cycles of sandpaper abrasion or after being immersed in water for 3 h. After 20 cycles of oil/water separation, the coating retains separation efficiency up to 97.93%. This study provides a new and universal protocol to fabricate unique superwetting surfaces with effective oil/water separation performance, long-term durability and outstanding reusability.
