In this work, silicon dots (SiDs) were synthesized and surface-engineered by introducing Gum Arabic (GA), which were utilized as novel non-metallic quantum dots corrosion inhibitors for Q235 carbon steel in HCl solution. A comparative analysis was conducted on the synthesis, characterization, and inhibition performance, confirming the surface engineering can enhance their anticorrosion ability while maintaining the excitation and emission properties. Weight loss tests confirmed a corrosion rate decrease from 8.38 g·m –2 ·h –1 (blank) to 0.53 g·m –2 ·h –1 (100 mg/L GA-SiDs), achieving 93.68 % inhibition efficiency. Electrochemical tests revealed a polarization resistance of 1013 Ω cm 2 for GA-SiDs, significantly higher than the blank (54.88 Ω cm 2 ), while polarization curves confirmed mixed-type inhibition with a corrosion current density reduction to 1.48 × 10 –4 A·cm –2 . Thermodynamic and surface/interface analysis demonstrated the inhibition mechanism: physical adsorption interaction, chemisorption coordination, and hydrophobic film formation. This work provides a sustainable strategy for designing non-metallic quantum dot inhibitors, combining high performance, cost-effectiveness, and environmental compatibility.

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a major public metabolic disease that influences 366 million people in the world in 2011, and this number is predicted to rise to 552 million in 2030. DM is clinically diagnosed by a fasting blood glucose that is equal or greater than 7 mM. Therefore,
the development of effective glucose biosensor has attracted extensive attention worldwide. Fluorescence- based strategies have sparked tremendous interest due to their rapid response, facile operation, and excellent sensitivity. Many fluorescent compounds have been employed for precise analysis
of glucose, including quantum dots, noble metal nanoclusters, up-converting nanoparticles, organic dyes, and composite fluorescent microspheres. Silicon dot as promising quantum dots materials have received extensive attention, owing to their distinct advantages such as biocompatibility, low
toxicity and high photostability. Methods: MnO2 nanosheets on the Si nanoparticles (NPs) surface serve as a quencher. Si NPs fluorescence can make a recovery by the addition of H2O2, which can reduce MnO2 to Mn2+, and the glucose can thus be monitored based on the enzymatic conversion
of glucose by glucose oxidase to generate H2O2. Therefore, the glucose concentration can be derived by recording the fluorescence recovery spectra of the Si NPs. Results: This probe enabled selective detection of glucose with a linear range of 1-100 μg/mL and a limit of detection of
0.98 μg/mL. Compared with the commercial glucometer, this method showed favorable results and convincing reliability. Conclusion: We have developed a novel method based on MnO2 -nanosheet-modified Si NPs for rapid monitoring of blood glucose levels. By combining the highly sensitive
H2O2/MnO2 reaction with the excellent photostability of Si NPs, a highly sensitive, selective, and cost-efficient sensing approach for glucose detection has been designed and applied to monitor glucose levels in human serum with satisfactory results.

Background High-precision and broad-range pH detection is critical for health status assessment, such as signal transduction, enzyme activity, endocytosis, and cell proliferation and apoptosis. Although pH-responsive ratiometric fluorescent probes offer an effective pH monitoring strategy, their preparation often requires multi-step modification and decreases fluorescence efficiency and stability. Herein, we developed a simple method to prepare fluorescent Si dots with dual emission centers for high-precision and broad-range pH monitoring, and the detection of urease based on pH-responsive Si dots and pH monitoring in living cell was further explored. Results The dual-emitting Si dots had two emission centers at 427 nm and 500 nm. The emission at 427 nm showed a fluorescence enhancement and effective quenching in the pH ranges of 3.0-10.0 and 10.0-12.0, respectively. While the emission at 500 nm increased gradually with increasing pH from 3.0 to 12.0. Two linear relationships were obtained between the synchronous fluorescence intensity ratio and pH in the ranges of 7.0-9.5 and 10.0-12.0 with a △pH of 0.1, indicating a broad detection range and high precision. Then the Si dots were used to detect urease activity via urea hydrolysis-mediated pH changes. A linear range of 1-80 U/L was established with a detection limit of 0.28 U/L. Furthermore, the Si dots were used for pH imaging in living HeLa cells. The cells changed from green to blue when the pH of HeLa cells increased from 6.0 to 10.0. Significance These findings collectively suggest that the intrinsic dual-emitting Si dots may offer a simple and versatile platform for developing pH-relevant biosensors and bioimaging applications. Additionally, this approach provides reliable methods for preparing intrinsic dual-emitting probe and constructing fluorescence ratiometrics, which widely used in health status assessment.

The development of biosensors mediated by synergistic quenching effect is of great significance for rapid and accurate clinical diagnosis. Hence, we prepared a cyan-emitting fluorescent Si dots for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) detection through the synergistic quenching effect of inner filter effect (IFE) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET). Si dots were prepared by microwave-assisted method, which displayed high quantum yield (28.7%), as well as good physiochemical properties, such as photo-stability, pH stability, and chemical stability. As the hydrolysate of 4-nitrophenyl phosphate disodium salt hexahydrate catalyzed by ALP, both IFE and PET of 4-nitrophenyl to Si dots were used for the turn-off mode detection of ALP. The linear relationships were established between the change of fluorescence intensity and ALP concentration in the range of 0.05 U L −1 to 5.0 U L-1, and 5.0 U L −1 to 80.0 U L −1 , respectively. The detection limit was 0.01 U L −1 . The synergistic quenching effect caused the turn-off mode detection to be more sensitive, and it can also be used for the accurate detection of ALP in human serum, thereby showing great anti-interference ability in complex environments.
