Silicon–carbon (Si/C) composites hold great promise as substitutes for conventional graphite anodes in high-specific-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their performance is hindered by silicon’s substantial volume expansion during cycling, which can lead to electrode degradation. Traditional poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) binders often struggle to maintain electrode integrity under these conditions. To address this challenge, polyether modified polyurethane acrylic (PUMA) is used as physicochemical cocrosslinking polymer. PUMA offers superior mechanical properties, elasticity, and interfacial stability, enabling it to effectively accommodate silicon’s volume changes and prevent electrode fracture. Through a simple preparation process, we used PUMA as a slurry additive in combination with PAA to form a functional composite binder, facilitating the construction of a stable and robust SEI film. This is conducive to alleviating the volume expansion of silicon and ensuring the cycling stability of the electrode. In Si/C450 half-cells, electrodes enhanced by our binder show a remarkable longevity, maintaining 97.26% of their capacity post 200 cycles at 0.5 C. The full cells Si/C450||NCM811 display a notable performance, achieving a capacity retention of 82.10% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. These findings underscore the potential of our innovative binder design in enhancing the efficacy of silicon-based anodes in high-energy LIBs.

Direct conversion of biomass to functional materials is an ideal solution to relieve challenges in environmental and energy sustainability. We herein demonstrate a molten salt thermoelectrolysis of rice husks (RHs) mainly consisting of organic mass and biosilica to achieve high-efficiency and upgraded utilization of both Si and C in RHs. By coupling pyrolysis of organic mass with electrochemical reduction of silica in molten salts, the thermoelectrolysis of RHs in molten CaCl 2 –NaCl at 800 °C refines the RHs and acid-leached RHs to SiC nanowire/C (SiC-NW/C) and Si nanoparticle/C (Si-NP/C), respectively. The present study highlights the molten salt thermoelectrolysis for reclamation of biomass wastes in an affordable and controllable manner.

Severe volume expansion and inherently poor lithium ion transmission are two major problems of silicon anodes. To address these issues, we proposed a pomegranate-type Si/C composite anode with highly dispersed tiny silicon particles as the core assisted by small amount of SiC. Skillfully exploiting the high heat from magnesiothermic reduction, SiC can assist the good dispersion of silicon and provide good interface compatibility and chemical stability. The silicon anchored to the carbon shell provides multipoint contact mode, that together with the carbon shell frame, significantly promoting the transfer of dual charge. Besides, the pomegranate-type microcluster structure also improves the tap density of the electrode, reduces the direct contact area between active material and electrolyte, and enhances the electrochemical performance.

Using silicon/carbon composites is one of the most attractive strategies to improve the anode performance for lithium ion batteries. Nevertheless, the adhesion between silicon and carbon can be hardly maintained. It is critical to enhance the silicon/carbon structure stability. Here, we report a facile procedure to design a stable Si@CA@RH anode. Silicon nanoparticles are encapsulated with citric acid that can buffer the volume change and maintain the connection with the carbon structure via ester bonds. A rice husk derived carbon skeleton is used to facilitate the electronic conductivity network as well as the structural stability of the electrode. The hierarchically porous carbon matrix provides sufficient space to accommodate the volume expansion of Si and shortens the lithium-ion transportation distance. Hence, the Si@CA@RH electrode exhibits a stable capacity of 2126 mA h g−1 and high coulombic efficiency of 99.5% after 250 cycles. This strategy gives a perspective on alternative design of integrated carbon/silicon anode materials for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Graphical Electrodes from rice waste : A simplified process is developed to synthesize Si/C composites from biomass, by using a low-cost agricultural byproduct “rice husk (RH)-biomass”, without extra steps such as the removal of carbon from calcined biomass and then the deposition of carbon for Si/C. The final product with the optimized nanostructure exhibits enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of reversible capacity and long-term cycling stability. Synthesis of silicon/carbon (Si/C) composites from biomass resources could enable the effective utilization of agricultural products in the battery industry with economical as well as environmental benefits. Herein, a simplified process was developed to synthesize Si/C from biomass, by using a low-cost agricultural byproduct “rice husk (RH)” as a model. This process includes the calcination of RH for SiO 2 /C and the reduction of SiO 2 /C by Al in molten salts at a moderate temperature. This process does not need the removal of carbon before thermal reduction of SiO 2 , which is thought to be necessary to avoid the formation of SiC at elevated temperatures. Thus, carbon derived from biomass can be directly used for Si/C composites for anode materials. The resultant Si/C shows a high reversible capacity of 1309 mAh g −1 and long cycle life (300 cycles). This research advocates a new and simplified strategy for the synthesis of RH-based biomass-derived Si/C, which is beneficial for low-cost, environmentally friendly, and green energy storage applications.

A facile, low cost, and low equipment-requirement preparation route of Si/C composite was developed. Naturally porous flour was carbonized through a conformal carbonization process and a further activation process in vacuum, obtaining flour-derived porous carbon (FPC) with ample pores. FPC was used to load nano-silicon through electrostatic adsorption method. Si-FPC was coated by sucrose-derived carbon (SC) shell by aqueous evaporation method to obtain Si-FPC-SC. Benefitting from FPC’s good dispersion for silicon, 40%-Si-FPC delivers a reversible capacity of 1562 mAh g −1 , equivalent to 83% of pure nano-silicon’s reversible capacity, an outstanding rate performance of 761 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 current density. The final 30%-Si-FPC-SC exhibits a reversible capacity of 937 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , a cyclic retention of 82.3% after 100 cycles. Furthermore, the synthetic method of Si/C composites offers a universal idea for the research of high-capacity anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

The prepared carbon-coated silicon (Si@C) material was blended with graphite powder together to form the specific carbon paste electrode with different mass percent X% of Si@C (CPE-Si@C(X%)). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed on the prepared CPE-Si@C and the pure carbon paste electrode (CPE), and the results show that the CPE-Si@C (X%) electrode has a smaller charge transfer resistance . Pt/CPE and Pt/CPE-Si@C(X%) electrodes were prepared by electrodepositing Pt particles on CPE-Si@C and CPE, and the obtained electrodes were used for electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol in acid media. The results show that the activity of Pt/CPE-Si@C(X%) electrode for electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol was higher than that of Pt/CPE electrode, and the mass peak current density of Pt/CPE-Si@C(10%) electrode for electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol reached 321 mA mg −1 , which was 1.8 times higher than that of Pt/CPE electrode. The Pt/CPE-Si@C (10%) electrode and the Pt/CPE electrode were characterized by chronoamperometry . The results show that Pt/CPE-Si@C (10%) has a better stability of activity and stronger tolerance against CO poisoning.

The comprehensive utilization of Si-rich biomass is restrained by macromolecular lignin and a large amount of ash. In this study, rice husks (RHs) are treated as a representative by alkali extraction and acid precipitation, and the obtained lignin-SiO 2 composite is modified by carbonazation, ball milling, magnesiothermic reduction and additives. Through these processes, a Si/C composite with excellent electrochemical properties is obtained and performs stable cycling performance with high specific capacity retention of 572 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 1000 cycles. This introduced method provides a potential for utilizing Si-rich biomass comprehensively and preparing desirable Si/C anode materials from Si-rich biomass derived lignin-SiO 2 composites.

A polymer composite with high dielectric permittivity was prepared by embedding silicon carbide (SiC) whisker with an average diameter of 500 nm–1 μm in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). However, the high dielectric loss and electrical conductivity of the two-phase composite prohibits its potential applications. Barium titanate (BT) particles with average diameter of 100 nm and 1 μm were incorporated as a third phase to fabricate a three-phase composite. The morphology structure, dielectric and electrical properties before and after the addition of BT particles were investigated. The three-phase composite exhibits largely suppressed dielectric loss and electrical conductivity without sacrificing the high dielectric permittivity, which was extremely hard to be realized for two-phase composite. It is also found that the nano-size BT is more favorable in achieving high dielectric permittivity than the micro-size BT, where their dielectric loss and electrical conductivity are similar. Furthermore, electric modulus analysis confirms the largely suppressed electron conduction process which results in the enhanced dielectric and electrical properties in three-phase composite.

Lithium-ion batteries with enhanced rate performance are of crucial importance for practical applications. Extensive studies on the structural design and surface modification of electrode materials with the aim of improving the rate performance have been reported. Here we describe a new concept to enhance the rate capability by incorporating a tiny amount of metal species into the electron conductive agent. We show that the Si/C composite anode exhibits increased capabilities at high current densities when oxidized Ketjen black (KJB) with incorporated cobalt (Co-ox-KJB) is used as the electron conductive agent. Compared with the pristine KJB, the reversible capacities of the Si/C electrode with the Co-ox-KJB are increased by 180% on average at 1.50 A g−1 (279 mA h g−1vs. 73 mA h g−1, respectively). A synergistic contribution from enhanced electron conductivity by Co incorporation, improved affinity towards the electrolyte and an enhanced desolvation process by surface functional groups is responsible for the improved electrochemical performance. This approach is applicable for super P-based electron conductive agents as well.

A novel method was developed to successfully prepare mesoporous Si/C nanocomposites with yolk–shell structures (MSi@C). Different from the reported methods, this approach was unique, straightforward and easily scaled up. A plausible mechanism for the formation of MSi@C nanocomposites was proposed, which was in accordance with the results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). When the mixture of mesoporous Si (M-Si) and citric acid was heated up, the volume of air adsorbed by the M-Si expanded, and the viscoelastic citric acid layers inflated just like balloons, directly leading to the formation of the yolk–shell structured MSi@C nanocomposites during the carbonization. The MSi@C nanocomposites possessed an M-Si core with diameter ∼150 nm and a carbon shell with diameter ∼230 nm. Such nano and mesoporous structure combined with voids between the M-Si core and carbon shell not only provides enough space for the volume expansion of M-Si during lithiation, but also accommodates the mechanical stresses/strains caused by the volume inflation and contraction. Moreover, partial graphitization of the carbon contributed to the improved electrical conductivity and rate performance of MSi@C. As a result, the prepared MSi@C exhibited an initial reversible capacity of 2599.1 mA h g−1 and maintained 1264.7 mA h g−1 even after 150 cycles at 100 mA g−1, with high coulombic efficiency (CE) above 99% (based on the weight of M-Si in the electrode). Therefore, this work provided an alternative method to fabricate yolk–shell nanostructured materials with great potential as anode materials for lithium ion batteries.

Silicon/carbon composites have the disadvantages of large volume expansion and high cost, which limits their commercial application. In this study, green and economic starch was used to prepare porous starch (PS) under the action of enzymes, and then nano-silica was embedded in the PS. A PS based carbon/silicon/carbon composite was prepared by coating and carbonizing the starch slurry, which can alleviate the volume expansion of silicon. The results show that the anode composite material with 20% silicon content has a high initial capacity of 869 mAh g−1 and an initial Coulombic efficiency of 66% at 0.2 A g−1, and the specific capacity is maintained 450 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles. When the silicon content reaches 30%, the reversible capacity of the composite is 1490 mAh g−1 at a current density of 0.2 A g−1, and the capacity remains 850 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles. Its excellent properties and stability are attributed to the abundant porosity of the carbon in the starch derived layer, which improves the structural stability and electrochemical kinetics. This method provides a reference for the sustainable and environmental protection of lithium-ion battery anode materials.
