Polyvinyl alcohol grafted poly (acrylic acid) as water-soluble binder with enhanced adhesion capability and electrochemical performances for Si anode

Jiarong He,Lingzhi Zhang

Polyvinyl alcohol grafted poly (acrylic acid) (PVA- g -PAA) is synthesized through graft polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) onto PVA backbone via a free radical reaction. PVA- g -PAA is used as a water-soluble binder for silicon (Si) anodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The enhanced adhesion strength , excellent flexibility and high electrolyte uptake after grafting reaction render PVA- g -PAA a robust binder for Si anodes. Compared to linear PVA, PAA and CMC , optimal Si-PVA- g -10PAA electrode exhibits better cycle stability, higher Coulombic efficiency and more excellent rate capability, possessing a high electrical conductivity , low SEI/charge transfer resistance and fast lithium-ion diffusion coefficient . PVA- g -PAA binder not only maintains the electrode's mechanical and electrical integrity, facilitates a favorable electrochemical kinetics, but also assists in forming a stable SEI layer on Si surface upon long-term cycling. Such a strategy sheds light on the design of novel polymer binders for practical applications of high-capacity active materials with great volume change.

A semi-fluid multi-functional binder for a high-performance silicon anode of lithium-ion batteries

Hui Xu,Xiaoxi Liu,Wenlu Sun,Guanghui Xu,Yihong Tong,Hongyuan Xu,Jiawei Li,Zhao Kong,Yong Wang,Zhiyong Lin,Hong Jin,Hongwei Chen

Currently, a variety of binders are developed to inhibit the rapid capacity fading of Si. The Si anodes are mainly enhanced by the chemical bonding effect on the surface of conventional solid-state binders. However, with a huge volume change of silicon, solid binders are easily deactivated. Herein, a semi-fluid binder termed GPC is designed based on a viscoelastic crosslinking network with abundant active sites and self-healing performance. The backbone of the binder network is in situ synthesized using guar gum (GG), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and citric acid (CA). Serving as the flexible joints and the plasticizer of the network, CA small molecules remarkably improve the viscoelasticity of the binder to tolerate the volume change of Si via rearranging particles in the network during cycling. Moreover, CA can form a layer of surface coating on Si to stabilize the SEI for long-term electrochemical performance. As a result, the Si@GPC electrode shows excellent cycling stability and exhibits a superb capacity of 1292 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g−1. This work illustrates the advantages and prospects of designing semi-fluid binders for high-performance batteries.

Cross-Linkable Binders for Si Anodes in High-Energy-Density Lithium-Ion Batteries

Jin-Xin Xue,Si-Xin Jia,Tian-Qi Xiang,Jian-Jun Zhou,Lin Li

Although silicon (Si) has a high theoretical capacity, the large volume expansion during lithiation has greatly hindered its application in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Among the strategies for improving the performance of Si anode, the role of binders should not be underestimated. Here, a novel strategy for designing a cross-linkable binder for Si anode has been proposed. The binder with hydroxyl and nitrile groups can be in situ covalently cross-linked through the amide group in the batteries. The cross-linked binder (c-POAH) shows high elasticity and strong adhesion to Si particles and the current collector. Si||Li half coin cells using the c-POAH binder have excellent cycle performance and the capacity retention ratio is 67.1% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. Scanning electronic microscopy images show that the c-POAH binder can contribute to suppressing the pulverization of the Si anode. Moreover, the investigation with X-ray photoelectronic spectrum demonstrates that the decomposition of the liquid electrolyte on Si anode has been mitigated and the c-POAH binder can promote the formation of a more stable SEI film. Our strategy of endowing the binder with good elasticity through in situ cross-linking has opened up a new route for developing binders, which will definitely promote the application of Si anodes in high-energy-density LIBs.

Piezoelectricity-driven structural stabilization and electrochemical enhancement in silicon anodes: a novel force-electric coupling framework

Kanghou Ma,Caiyue Sun,Yitao He,Xinyue Zhao,Sunfa Wang,Ge Zhang,Chen Wang,Fangshuo Zhou,Zhiguo Liu,Zhe Lü,Xiqiang Huang,Ningning Wu,Yaohui Zhang

This study presents a novel approach to enhance silicon anode performance through barium titanate (BTO) incorporation, with the establishment of a force-electric coupling model. By introducing piezoelectric BTO into silicon matrices, we successfully improved both the mechanical stability and electrochemical kinetics of the anode. The developed force-electric coupling model explains how BTO mitigates stress accumulation during lithiation while optimizing the kinetics of Li + and electron transfer. Experimental verification and multiphysical simulation indicate that Si@BTO effectively eliminates structural degradation during the cycling process and significantly reduces the charge transfer resistance. The force-electric coupling mechanism further facilitates stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation. When paired with LiFePO 4 cathodes, Si@BTO maintains 76% capacity retention after 500 cycles at a 10 C rate. This work establishes a basic force-electric coupling model framework and offers insights into the development of advanced silicon anode batteries with exceptional performance.

Enabling high-performance lithium iron phosphate cathodes through an interconnected carbon network for practical and high-energy lithium-ion batteries

Binke Li,Jianqi Xiao,Xiaoyi Zhu,Zhuoyan Wu,Xushan Zhang,Yu Han,Jin Niu,Feng Wang

The olivine lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode has gained significant utilization in commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with graphite anodes. However, the actual capacity and rate performance of LFP still require further enhancement when combined with high-capacity anodes, such as silicon (Si) anodes, to achieve high-energy LIBs. In this study, we introduce a gelatin-derived carbon network into a nanosized LFP cathode without the need for additional binding and conductive agents, employing a simple and cost-effective method. The resulting cathode exhibits an extremely high LFP content (∼92.3 wt%), enabling it to show a high real capacity of 159.7 mAh/g at 0.2 C in half cells. Additionally, the interconnected carbon network effectively facilitates electron and Li + transport, providing rapid pathways within the LFP nanoparticles . Consequently, the cathode exhibits superior rate capability (107.3 mAh/g at 10 C) and good cycling performance (with a capacity retention of ∼ 80 % after 500 cycles). To further assess its practical viability, the LFP cathode is assembled into a full cell utilizing a Si-based anode with a N/P ratio of 1.1. The resulting full cell delivers a significantly high energy density of 419.7 Wh kg −1 , coupled with prolonged cycle life, highlighting its promising prospects for practical applications.

Recycled micro-sized silicon anode for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries

Liu Tao,Dong Tiantian,Wang Mengying,Du Xiaofan,Sun Youlong,Xu Gaojie,Zhang Huanrui,Dong Shanmu,Cui Guanglei

Silicon (Si) anode is widely viewed as a game changer for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its much higher capacity than the prevalent graphite and availability in sufficient quantity and quality. Most Si anode designs are nanostructured to overcome the large volume variation during cycling, but this comes at the expense of manufacturability, cost advantage and other merits. Here we demonstrate that micro-sized Si (μm-Si) recycled from photovoltaic waste can serve as anode material, exhibiting an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.94% and retaining 83.13% of its initial capacity after 200 cycles through the rational electrolyte design. With a formulated ether electrolyte of 3 M LiPF 6 in 1,3-dioxane (DX)/1,2-diethoxyethane (DEE), NCM811||μm-Si pouch cells survive 80 cycles and deliver an energy density of 340.7 Wh kg −1 even under harsh conditions. Responsible for the impressive electrochemical performance is a unique SEI chemistry where the flexible polymer-dominated outer layer well holds fractured Si particles together and the rigid Li 2 O/LiF-rich inner layer serves to facilitate ionic conduction and suppress side reactions. Our work not only suggests a more sustainable supply source for Si particles but also addresses the major problems facing μm-Si anode materials.

Ether-/Ester-/Fluorine-Rich Binding Emulsion Formula for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Xianqing Zeng,Donglin Han,Zeheng Li,Hongxun Wang,Gu Wu,Yong Deng,Kai Liu,Li Xie,Chengdu Liang,Min Ling,Yuchuan Huang

Practical application of a Si anode in a high-energy-density battery cannot be achieved due to the huge volume expansion of these anodes. Researchers have focused on binders of the anode to restrict volume expansion in order to address this issue, as the hydrogen bonds and mechanical properties of binders can be used to enhance adhesion and accommodate the volume changes of a Si anode. Herein, we comprehensively consider binders’ hydrogen bonds, mechanical properties, stability, and compatibility with the electrolyte solution, and design an ether-/ester-/fluorine-rich composite polymer, named P(TFEMA- co -IBVE). The proposed binder formula possesses outstanding stability, adhesion, and mechanical strength; moreover, it can accommodate the dramatic volume changes of a Si electrode and exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, achieving a high areal capacity of about 5.4 mA∙h∙cm −2 . This novel polymer design may be applied to other electrode materials in the next generation of lithium-ion batteries.

Jing Wang,Jian Hao,Xiao Yang,Ruyi Zhang,Junli Guo,Yu Zhao,Jianing Chen,Caixia Chi

In order to overcome the problems about the volume expansion and poor electronic conductivity of Si , a flexibility and rigidity double coating layer CNTs-rGO- PAIN was constructed. The CNTs-rGO-PANI network with porous structure and high electronic conductivity provides sufficient space to accommodate the volume change of Si, and abundant transmission path for electron and Li ion . Moreover, the coating network with flexibility and rigidity characteristic could absorb the expansion stress of Si, maintain electrode structural integrity, promote the growth of stable SEI . The polymer-nanocarbon network dual coating layer effectively safeguards the electrochemical-mechanical interplay within the electrode. The 20Si-CNTs-rGO-PANI exhibits a reversible capacity as high as 1856 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 and a remarkable rate capacity of 570 and 459 mAh g −1 , at 5 and 10 A g −1 , respectively. The outstanding Li ion storage performance of 20Si-CNTs-rGO-PANI anode, suggests the flexibility-rigidity dual coating layer strategy is a potential way to improve the performance of alloy type anode .

A Web-like Three-dimensional Binder for Silicon Anode in Lithium-ion Batteries

Liyuan Li,Tao Li,Yifan Sha,Baozeng Ren,Lan Zhang,Suojiang Zhang

Si anode is of paramount importance for advanced energy-dense lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the large volume change as well as stress generates during its lithiation-delithiation process poses a great challenge to the long-term cycling and hindering its application. Herein this work, a composite binder is prepared with a soft component, guar gum (GG), and a rigid linear polymer, anionic polyacrylamide (APAM). Rich hydroxy, carboxyl, and amide groups on the polymer chains not only enable intermolecular crosslinking to form a web-like binder, A2G1, but also realize strong chemical binding as well as physical encapsulating to Si particles. The resultant electrode shows limited thickness change of merely 9% on lithiation and almost recovers its original thickness on delithiation. It demonstrates high reversible capacity of 2104.3 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 1800 mA g −1 , and in constant capacity (1000 mAh g −1 ) test, it also shows a long life of 392 cycles. Therefore, this soft-hard combining web-like binder illustrates its great potential in the future applications.

Engineering of aqueous binder mediated organic/inorganic artificial interfacial layers for enhancing silicon anode performance

Yu Qin,Lei Peng,Yang Shen,Zhenzhen Liu,Jing Su,Xiaoyan Lv,Yanxuan Wen

The expansion of silicon volume significantly impacts the degradation of silicon anodes. The current binder-formed interface fails to effectively suppress this expansion due to the absence of rigid inorganic components. Therefore, we develop an aqueous binder-mediated interfacial engineering strategy to construct an organic/inorganic artificial interfacial layer in situ during the electrode preparation process. This artificial interfacial layer, consisting of an organic alginate–lithium citric acid–tannin derivative (LiACT) binder and inorganic Li 2 SiO 3 , is generated by a combination of chemical reactions and hydrogen bonding between tannic acid, citric acid, sodium alginate, silicon, and lithium hydroxide. The three-dimensional structure provides the LiACT binder with a strong binding force. The elasticity of LiACT, the high Young's modulus of Li 2 SiO 3 , and their fast ionic conductivity enable this artificial interfacial layer to exhibit robust rigidity-flexibility and excellent ionic-electronic transport properties. Therefore, the Si electrode coated with this artificial interfacial layer (Si@LiACT) exhibits high coulombic efficiency (99.2 % in the 5th cycle), excellent cycling stability (89.2 % capacity retention after 200 cycles), and superior rate performance (1044 mAh g −1  at 4C). These enhancements are attributed to the unique organic/inorganic artificial interfacial layer, which effectively inhibits silicon volume expansion, alleviates interfacial side reactions, and promotes interfacial charge transfer.

Remarkably improved cycling stability of commercial micron-sized silicon enabled by a novel organic/inorganic hybrid binder

Xiao Chen,Ruizi Wang,Xin Zhang,Yaxiong Yang,Wenping Sun,Mingxia Gao,Hongge Pan,Yongfeng Liu

Silicon (Si) anode with ultra-high capacity and low cost are highly desirable for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries, whereas suffers from severe volume change that causes rapid capacity decay upon lithiation/delithiation. The development of high-performance binders to alleviate volumetric expansion and maintain integrity of Si particles remains a significant challenge. Here, reported is a novel organic/inorganic hybrid binder composed of partial neutralized polyacrylic acid (PAAS) and sodium metaborate tetrahydrate (SMTH), which achieves in-situ crosslinking upon drying wafer electrodes. The robust crosslinked network structure with borate ester bonds is successfully attained, and can be modulated by changing the content of sodium metaborate. The strong covalent bond network endows the hybrid binder system with superior mechanical properties and powerful adhesion, which improve the contact and integrity of wafer silicon electrode by suppressing volume expansion and exfoliation, therefore facilitating Li-ion migration and enhancing electrochemical performance. The resulting commercial micro-silicon wafer electrode with PAAS/0.08SMTH binder remains a reversible specific capacity of 1670 mAh g −1 after 150 cycles at 300 mA g −1 , largely superior to that prepared with the original PAAS binder because its reversible specific capacity was determined to be only 1046 mAh g −1 under identical conditions. The in-situ crosslinked 3D network structure provides a facile feasible way to improve the high-capacity anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Quantitative analysis of the structural evolution in Si anode via multi-scale image reconstruction

Chen Zhu,Shiming Chen,Ke Li,Zu-Wei Yin,Yinguo Xiao,Hai Lin,Feng Pan,Luyi Yang

Despite the high theoretical capacity, silicon (Si) anode suffers from dramatical capacity loss, due to its massive volume swings (up to 300%) during cycling. Hence, thorough understanding of the structural evolution mechanism is necessary and essential for performance optimization of Si anode. Herein, a multi-scale three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction technique is firstly applied to visualize the structural evolution process of Si anodes. Three key components (Si particles, inactive components, and voids) in the electrode are quantitatively analyzed by the focused ion beam and scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) technology. Furthermore, the average sizes of Si particles were run statistics during the cycling. By combining the componential observation within the electrode (macroscopic information) and the 3D models of the particle with solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer (microscopic information), the failure mechanism of Si anode is vividly demonstrated. This work establishes a new methodology to quantitatively analyze the structural and compositional evolution of Si anode, which could be further applied for the studies of many other electrode materials with similar issues.
