Production of bio-oil and biochar by the nitrogen-rich pyrolysis of cellulose with urea: Pathway of nitrile in bio-oil and evolution of nitrogen in biochar

Mengqian Yin,Dongmei Bi,Wenjing Zhao,Jing Liu,An Zhao,Mei Jiang

The production of nitrogen-containing chemicals from renewable biomass under nitrogen-rich conditions represents a promising technological pathway. Urea, as a nitrogen carrier, offers advantages over gaseous ammonia due to its easier storage and transportation. In this study, cellulose and two of its model compounds (cellobiose and glucose) were used as raw materials. The effects of different urea concentrations on the types and relative contents of bio-oil components and the properties of nitrogen-doped biochar were analyzed using GC-MS, FT-IR, and elemental analysis . We further clarified the evolution of exogenous nitrogen in nitrogen-rich pyrolyzed bio-oil and biochar with different urea concentrations. Cellobiose was found to be a more suitable feedstock for the production of nitrogen-containing compounds from nitrile than cellulose or glucose. A significant increase in the relative content of nitrile compounds (44.45%) was observed at a ratio of 40% cellulose to nitrogen carrier. Analysis of the bio-oil fraction led to the conclusion that there may be two main pathways for the production of the two nitrile compounds, acetonitrile and propionitrile . This research provides a better understanding of the N transfer pathways during the nitrogen-rich pyrolysis of cellulose and its model compounds (cellobiose and glucose) when using urea as the nitrogen carrier. This will facilitate further improvements in the yield of nitrogen-containing compounds in bio-oil.

Synthesis of photoluminescent m-phenylenediamine-Rhodamine B copolymer dots: selective ultrahigh photocatalytic performance for catalytic reduction of nitro-compound

Fu Fengping,He Qian,Zhao Shizheng,Zhu Ting,Liao Fang

The design and fabricate new metal-free photocatalysts is one of the topics in current chemistry. In this paper, we demonstrate the ultrahigh photocatalytic performance of visible light-driven metal-free photocatalyst for selective catalytic reduction of nitro-compounds. The synthesis of 1.5–4.5-nm m-phenylenediamine-Rhodamine B copolymer dots (PmRDs) via simple hydrothermal reaction of Rhodamine B and m-phenylenediamine mixed solution. The obtained PmRDs can be used as visible light-driven metal-free photocatalyst with ultrahigh photocatalytic performance for elective catalytic reduction of nitro-compounds. Due to the hydrogen-bond and specific C–N–N bonding model between the m-phenylenediamine-Rhodamine B copolymer dots (PmRDs) and nitro-compounds, the PmRDs show high photocatalytic activity and selectivity for catalytic reduction of nitro-compounds. Under the irradiation of xenon lamp, 40 ml of 1 mM 4-nitrophenol (4-PN) could be catalyzed by 12 mg catalyst within 5 min, by calculating the rate constants up to 0.766 min  −1 (25 °C). In the same way, the PmRDs are also excellent photocatalytic activity and selectivity for different nitro-compounds. Meanwhile, the efficient fast photoinduced electron transfer between the m-phenylenediamine and the Rhodamine B progress significantly improved the photocatalytic performance of PmRDs which is much higher than metal-based (such as: Ag, Ni and Cu) or metallic composite photocatalysts.

Synthesis of MXene supported Co nanoparticle catalyst for efficient catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitro compounds with formic acid

Mingyuan Jian,Kecan Dou,Deqiong Xie,Gaomei Tu,Weidong Zhu,Fumin Zhang

This study introduces a novel catalyst designated as 2.6% Co/MXene, comprising cobalt (Co) nanoparticles supported by MXene. Synthesis of the 2.6% Co/MXene catalyst involved direct pyrolysis of a composite material, composed of a Co/Zn bimetal metal-organic framework and MXene. Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of functionalized nitro compounds into the corresponding formamides employed formic acid as both the hydrogen donor and formylation agent, demonstrating remarkable activity and selectivity. Control experiments validated that Co nanoparticles served as the active sites for reductive transformation. Systematic characterizations and comprehensive experiments have confirmed that the superior catalytic performance of the 2.6% Co/MXene catalyst can be attributed to the uniform distribution of Co nanoparticles, a high density of basic sites, and the 3D porous architecture of the MXene support. Furthermore, the 2.6% Co/MXene catalyst exhibited excellent recyclability, preserving its catalytic activity and selectivity across four consecutive cycles.

Production of NMSBA catalyzed by Co/Mn/Br together with the porous carbon made from coconut shell with ZnCl2 as activator

Le-Yao Wang,Zhen Yang,Feng Guo,Xiang-Li Long

BACKGROUND 2-nitro-4-methylsulfonylbenzoic acid (NMSBA) is commercially produced from the oxidation of 2-nitro-4-methylsulfonyltoluene (NMST) with nitric acid as oxidant and V 2 O 5 as catalyst in a strong acid solution; this process suffers from the following shortcomings: the discharge of large amounts of wastewater and waste gas, as along with the generation of polynitro compounds. It is necessary to develop a technology to avoid the pollution caused by oxidizing NMST with nitric acid. NMSBA can be synthesized by oxidizing NMST with air under the catalysis of the porous carbon made from coconut shell with ZnCl 2 as an activator together with Co/Mn/Br. RESULTS The optimum conditions for the preparation of the porous carbon are as follows: impregnation temperature 60 °C, ZnCl 2 concentration 0.50 mol L −1 , impregnation duration 6 h, carbonization temperature 600 °C, and carbonization time 4 h. The surface characterization suggests that the carbon made in this study holds smaller surface area, acidic groups, and basic groups than the commercial carbon but owns more carboxyl. CONCLUSION The Co/Mn/Br/AC (AC,the porous carbon made in this study) catalytic system is superior to the Co/Mn/Br/H 3 PMo 12 O 40 @CAC(CAC,commercial activated carbon) catalytic system in the production of NMSBA from the oxidation of NMST. The NMSBA selectivity gained by the former is 93.40%, while that gained by the latter is 87.14%. The former can cut down the consumption of NMST and the expenditure of catalysts. The catalytic ability of the AC catalyst relies on its surface chemical characteristics and physical properties. More carboxyl on AC is the reason for the upgrade of NMSBA selectivity. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Facile preparation of a self-assembled Artemia cyst shell–TiO2–MoS2 porous composite structure with highly efficient catalytic reduction of nitro compounds for wastewater treatment

Jianxun Zhao,Juanjuan Yin,Jinling Zhong,Tifeng Jiao,Zhenhua Bai,Sufeng Wang,Lexin Zhang,Qiuming Peng

The catalytic reduction of nitro compounds is currently a hot research area, how to efficiently and stably degrade such toxic and harmful substances has become the research goal of many researchers. In this work, an Artemia cyst shell (ACS)–TiO2–MoS2 ternary porous structure was proposed and prepared as a catalyst for the reduction of 2-nitroaniline (2-NA) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The ACS has a large number of porous structures, exhibits a good binding ability with TiO2 and MoS2, and provides a large number of active sites for the catalytic reduction process. The obtained composite material has a good reduction effect on 4-NP and 2-NA, with a good stability and recyclability, which is obviously higher than the reduction effect of ACS–TiO2 and MoS2 under the same conditions. This work provides ideas for the design of porous catalytic materials.

Self-Assembled Sandwich-like MXene-Derived Composites as Highly Efficient and Sustainable Catalysts for Wastewater Treatment

Juanjuan Yin,Bingcheng Ge,Tifeng Jiao,Zhihui Qin,Meiqi Yu,Lexin Zhang,Qingrui Zhang,Qiuming Peng

Photocatalysts play an increasingly important role in environmental remediation polluted by industrial wastewater. However, the preparation of adsorbents and catalysts with high activity by simple and easy methods is still a great challenge. Here, sandwich-like composite catalyst Cu2O/TiO2/Ti3C2 was prepared by an easily available solvent reduction measure for the highly efficient catalytic nitro compounds. In particular, sandwich-like composite catalyst Cu2O/TiO2/Ti3C2 exhibits excellent catalysis for 2-nitroaniline (2-NA) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and its pseudo-first-order reaction rate constants (k) are 0.163 and 0.114 min–1, respectively. Interestingly, even after eight consecutive cycles of catalytic experiments, the conversion rates of catalytic 2-NA and 4-NP are still greater than 95 and 92%, respectively, demonstrating that the obtained catalyst has excellent catalytic capability and a high reutilization rate. The excellent catalytic performances of Cu2O/TiO2/Ti3C2 can be attributed to the fact that Ti3C2 provides a greater reaction site for the formation of Cu2O and reduces the aggregation during the formation of Cu2O by in situ synthesis. Therefore, ternary composite catalyst Cu2O/TiO2/Ti3C2 prepared by solvent reduction not only supplies a technical method for the catalytic reaction of MXene-based material but also lays the foundation for the development of new photocatalysts.

Extended π-conjugated pyrene-based chemosensors for highly sensitive and selective detection of nitro-contaminants

Zeng-Min Xue,Xin-Tong Zhang,Wen-Xuan Zhao,Guang Yang,Chuan-Zeng Wang,Shu-Hai Chen,Hong-Tao Lin,Mark R.J. Elsegood,Takehiko Yamato

Nitro-containing compounds ( NCCs ) are a class of chemicals with high risk and toxicity, and the trace detection of NCCs has become an urgent technology in terms of both the security and environment. Herein, two K-region tetra-substituted pyrene-based luminogens were designed and synthesized, which present efficient deep blue emitting properties. More interestingly, both luminogens with π-electron rich and deep blue emission properties exhibited fast sensing of NCCs . A selective and sensitive response towards o -nitroaniline was obtained with a low limit of detection (LOD) of about 9.55 × 10 −9 M in the 2,7-di- tert -butyl-4,5,9,10-tertrakis(phenylethynyl)pyrene ( TPPy ) system, while a more efficient quenching behavior was observed at ppt level (142 ppt), and the LOD for p -nitroaniline as low as 1.03 × 10 −9 M. The quenching mechanisms are attributed to the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET), respectively. These results provided a convenient and efficient strategy for trace NCCs sensing.

A sensitive chemosensor for nitro-containing compounds based on Au nanoclusters/Ba2+ co-assembly system: The crucial role of ligands to metal charge transfer

Jinglin Shen,Yue Bi,Hao Zhang,Liandi Xu,Jin Feng,Wei Qi

Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are a class of promising inorganic-organic hybrid nanomaterials with exceptional photoluminescent properties. The understanding of their photoluminescent mechanism is important for developing functional AuNCs-based materials. In this work, thiobarbituric acid-modified AuNCs (TBA-AuNCs) was prepared and its photoluminescent property was modulated through co-assembly with Ba 2+ . The emission intensity was sharply enhanced with the formation of TBA-AuNCs/Ba 2+ complex. Structural characterization including transmission electron microscopy , scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the hybridization of TBA-AuNCs with Ba 2+ . The pH-dependent photoluminescence as well as zeta potential measurements demonstrated that the ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) is crucial for the regulation of emission property of the TBA-AuNCs/Ba 2+ . Based on this special photoluminescent mechanism, the TBA-AuNCs/Ba 2+ complex was employed as a chemical sensor for nitro-substituted aromatic compounds . The emission intensity of TBA-AuNCs/Ba 2+ selectively displayed sharp quenching in response to 2-methyl-4-nitroimidazole among various imidazole derivatives. Simultaneously, the complex also showed high sensitivity toward p -nitroaniline and 2-nitrophenol. Therefore, the developed TBA-AuNCs/Ba 2+ assemblies are potential in detecting the nitro-containing compounds, which will find applications in pharmaceutical analysis, environmental protection and other related fields.

Integrating a Luminescent Porous Aromatic Framework into Indicator Papers for Facile, Rapid, and Selective Detection of Nitro Compounds

Bo Cui,Changyuan Gao,Jiating Fan,Jinni Liu,Bin Feng,Xianghui Ruan,Yajie Yang,Ye Yuan,Kuo Chu,Zhuojun Yan,Lixin Xia

Porous aromatic framework materials with high stability, sensitivity, and selectivity have great potential to provide new sensors for optoelectronic/fluorescent probe devices. In this work, a luminescent porous aromatic framework material (LNU-23) was synthesized via the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling reaction of tetrabromopyrene and 1,2-bisphenyldiborate pinacol ester. The resulting PAF solid exhibited strong fluorescence emission with a quantum yield of 18.31%, showing excellent light and heat stability. Because the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of LNU-23 was higher than that of the nitro compounds, there was an energy transfer from the excited LNU-23 to the analyte, leading to the selective fluorescence quenching with a limit of detection (LOD) ≈ 1.47 × 10−5M. After integrating the luminescent PAF powder on the paper by a simple dipping method, the indicator papers revealed a fast fluorescence response to gaseous nitrobenzene within 10 s, which shows great potential in outdoor fluorescence detection of nitro compounds. Keywords:porous aromatic framework;luminescence;nitro compounds;indicator paper;selective detection

A novel proteomics workflow for simultaneous analysis of protein phosphorylation and S-nitrosylation

Zhang Wenyang,Wang Yanjiao,Li Wenyan,Wu Shaowen,Chen Yuanyuan,Ye Mingyang,Huang Wenjie,Fernie Alisdair R.,Yan Shijuan

Protein post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation and S -nitrosylation regulate protein functions and cellular programs in eukaryotes. Moreover, extensive evidence suggests crosstalk between these modifications. However, we lack a comprehensive method for the simultaneous detection and analysis of multiple post-translational modifications. Here, we present an optimized workflow that identifies phosphorylation and S -nitrosylation sites using a novel phosphate affinity tag switch technique. Validation with model proteins and complex biological samples confirmed the high sensitivity, coverage, and reproducibility of this method. Applying this method to Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings revealed 12,552 phosphorylation sites and 6,108 S -nitrosylation sites, representing the largest single-study dataset of S -nitrosylation sites to date. This approach enhances our understanding of post-translational modification dynamics in plant signaling, stress responses, and metabolism.

Ultra-thin nickel oxide overcoating of noble metal catalysts for directing selective hydrogenation of nitriles to secondary amines

Hengwei Wang,Yue Lin,Junling Lu

Hydrogenation of nitriles represents an efficient and environmentally benign route to synthesis of high-value amines. However, the amine selectivity is commonly low, and the mixtures of amines, imines, and even low-value hydrogenolysis byproducts are generally obtained. Herein, we report that overcoating of Pd and Pt catalysts with an ultra-thin NiO x layer via atomic layer deposition enables to close up the undesired hydrogenolysis pathway completely and to prompt a yield of secondary amines drastically to 96% under mild conditions in the hydrogenation of nitriles. The NiO x -coated catalysts also exhibit a much higher recyclability than the uncoated ones. Through detailed structural characterization and control experiments of catalytic performance tests, we show that the NiO x overcoat plays at least three important roles in the promotion of catalytic performance: (i) Enhancement of the adsorption of both imine intermediates and primary amines, to stimulate the subsequent condensation of these two molecules to form secondary amines exclusively with a high activity; (ii) Isolation of large Pd and Pt ensembles to inhibit the hydrogenolysis byproduct; and (iii) Acting as a protective layer to stabilize metal nanoparticles against leaching, and to prevent the formation of undesired metal hydride phase, thus leading to a significant improvement in catalytic stability. These findings provide a robust methodology for directing selective hydrogenation of nitriles to secondary amines exclusively, and the insights here would facilitate the rational design of oxide overcoating layers for advanced catalysis.

Performance of Daphnia simultaneously exposed to nitrite and predation risk: Reduced nitrite tolerance and aggravated predation-induced miniaturization

Lu Zhang,Tian Xia,Qi Liu,Lei Gu,Yunfei Sun,Zhou Yang

Nitrogenous pollutants derived from human activities not only pose direct risk on aquatic organisms but may also indirectly endanger the stability of interspecific relations. To date, the effects of the nitrogen-containing pollutants on the induced defense remain unclear. Here, we aim to investigate the induced defense of an aquatic keystone species , Daphnia pulex, which responds to predation risk under nitrite pollution at environmentally relevant concentrations and simultaneously evaluate the effects of their induced defenses on nitrite tolerance. Results showed that increasing nitrite significantly reduced the survival time of D. pulex and posed severe reproductive toxicity, consequently reducing the offspring and broods. In the morphological defensive responses, early nitrite exposure interfered with the spine elongation, but the relative spine length induced by the predation risk was unaffected by the nitrite concentrations with exposure time prolonged, although high-dose nitrite inhibited the spine elongation and the increase of the body size. The integration of biomarker response index analyses further indicated that the reproductive capacity was more seriously impaired than the morphology and the survival. Moreover, the sensitivity analyses of growth and reproduction indicated that predation risk significantly reduced Daphnia's tolerance to nitrite. Conclusively, these findings highlight that long-term nitrite exposure exacerbates the predator-induced miniaturization of zooplanktons, and predation risk also reduces their tolerance to nitrite, which provides new insights into the performance changes of zooplanktons exposed to pollutants under predation risk and the vulnerability of predator–prey interspecific relationships in polluted environments.
