Improvement in storage quality of postharvest tomato fruits by nitroxyl liposomes treatment

Yanyue Liu,Yisheng Sun,Mengting Ye,Liqin Zhu,Lili Zhang,Shuhua Zhu

Nitroxyl (HNO) has attracted much attention due to its unique biological activity. To investigate the preservation effect of HNO on fruits, a nitroxyl liposome based on 1-nitrosocyclohexyl acetate was prepared and characterized by infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The optimal preparation conditions were explored, and then HNO liposomes were prepared under the optimal conditions to study the effect of HNO liposomes on postharvest quality of tomatoes. The tomato fruits were treated with different concentrations (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 μmol L -1 ) of HNO liposomes and stored at room temperature. The results indicated that treatment with HNO liposomes can more effectively delay the browning and slow down the decrease in lightness of tomatoes. Additionally, HNO liposomes can reduce the activity of PPO and POD, inhibit the increase of MDA and total phenol content. These results suggest that treatment with HNO liposomes can effectively preserve the quality of tomatoes.

Synthesis of Nitronyl Nitroxide Radical-Modified Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes and Oxidative Desulfurization in Fuel

Min Tian,Haokang Huang,Gai Zhang,Haibo Wang

Novel and highly stable nitronyl nitroxide radical (NIT) derivatives were synthesized and coated on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to improve their desulfurization performance. They were characterized by FTIR, UV-vis, SEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy and ESR. Thiophene in fuel was desulfurized by molecular O2, and the oxidation activity of these compounds was evaluated. At a normal temperature and pressure, the degradation rates of thiophene by four compounds in 4 h can reach 92.66%, 96.38%, 93.25% and 89.49%, respectively. The MWCNTs/NIT-F have a high special activity for the degradation of thiophene, and their desulfurization activity can be recycled for five times without a significant reduction. The mechanistic studies of MWCNTs/NIT composites show that the ammonium oxide ion is the key active intermediate in catalytic oxidative desulfurization, which provides a new choice for fuel oxidative desulfurization. The results show that NIT significantly improves the photocatalytic performance of MWCNTs.

Polypeptide Radical Cathode for Aqueous Zn-Ion Battery with Two-Electron Storage and Faster Charging Rate

Yongqi Deng,Changchang Teng,Yihan Wu,Kefu Zhang,Lifeng Yan

Graphical Double the discharge : A polypeptide electrode with nitroxide radical pendant groups is synthesized and aqueous Zn-organic radical dual-ion batteries are fabricated, consisting of the polypeptide cathode and a Zn anode. Double discharge capacity (ca. 80 mAh g −1 ) and capacity retention of up to 97.4 % after 500 cycles are realized in 1 m Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 electrolyte. The rapidly growing demand for batteries has led to a lack of global mineral resources and rechargeable organic batteries are paid extensive attention, owing to the abundance resources, light weight, and high flexibility of organic electrodes. However, most organic electrodes that use aliphatic backbones are nondegradable, leading to unsustainability when active sites fail. In this study, a poly(aspartic acid) polypeptide (PASP) with amide links in the backbone and nitroxide radical pendant groups in the side chains is synthesized by modifying the polypeptides with 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine. In combination with a Zn anode, the PASP-TEMPO composite electrode exhibits rapid charge–discharge and superior cycling stability with reversible two-electron redox reaction in aqueous electrolyte. The Zn/PASP-TEMPO organic radical battery delivers a discharge capacity of around 80 mAh g −1 by two-electron reaction and charge–discharge rates of up to 18 A g −1 . Because the redox reaction process of the nitroxyl radical turning into oxoammonium follows a p-type mechanism that interacts with an anion, three electrolytes with different anions are tested in the Zn/PASP-TEMPO organic radical battery. Experimental results indicate that discharge plateau voltage is tunable by choosing different zinc salts as electrolytes. Capacity retention of up to 97.4 % after 500 cycles is realized in 1 m ZnClO 4 electrolyte, which can be attributed to the adjacent reaction potentials of the two-step one-electron reaction.

Mitochondria-Targeted Nitronyl Nitroxide Radical Nanoparticles for Protection against Radiation-Induced Damage with Antioxidant Effects

Shigao Huang,Min Xu,Qingyue Da,Linlin Jing,Haibo Wang

Simple SummaryRadiation therapy is widely applied to treat and alleviate cancers. However, it may lead to acute and chronic side effects in adjacent normal organs. Therefore, it is imperative to develop effective strategies for the radiological protection of the normal organs and immune system of patients during radiotherapy. In this context, we investigated a mitochondria-targeted nitronyl nitroxide radical with a tri-phenylphosphine ion (TPP-NIT) and its nanoparticles (NPs-TPP-NIT) with minimal toxicity. Through in vitro and in vivo experimental studies, we found that NPs-TPP-NIT display a protective effect against oxidative damage caused by X-ray irradiation. These findings reveal that NPs-TPP-NIT may be promising radioprotectors and could therefore be applied to protect healthy tissues and organs from radiation during the treatment of cancer with radiotherapy.AbstractRadiotherapy is a non-invasive method that is widely applied to treat and alleviate cancers. However, radiation-induced effects in the immune system are associated with several side effects via an increase in oxidative stress and the inflammatory response. Therefore, it is imperative to develop effective clinical radiological protection strategies for the radiological protection of the normal organs and immune system in these patients. To explore more effective radioprotective agents with minimal toxicity, a mitochondria-targeted nitronyl nitroxide radical with a triphenylphosphine ion (TPP-NIT) was synthesized and its nanoparticles (NPs-TPP-NIT) were prepared and characterized. The TPP-NIT nanoparticles (NPs-TPP-NIT) were narrow in their size distribution and uniformly distributed; they showed good drug encapsulation efficiency and a low hemolysis rate (<3%). The protective effect of NPs-TPP-NIT against X-ray irradiation-induced oxidative damage was measured in vitro and in vivo. The results show that NPs-TPP-NIT were associated with no obvious cytotoxicity to L-02 cells when the concentration was below 1.5 × 10−2mmol. NPs-TPP-NIT enhanced the survival rate of L-02 cells significantly under 2, 4, 6, and 8 Gy X-ray radiation exposure; the survival rate of mice was highest after 6 Gy X-ray irradiation. The results also show that NPs-TPP-NIT could increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and decrease malondialdehyde (MDA) levels after the L-02 cells were exposed to 6.0 Gy of X-ray radiation. Moreover, NPs-TPP-NIT could significantly inhibit cell apoptosis. NPs-TPP-NIT significantly increased the mouse survival rate after irradiation. NPs-TPP-NIT displayed a marked ability to reduce the irradiation-induced depletion of red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets (PLTs). These results demonstrate the feasibility of using NPs-TPP-NIT to provide protection from radiation-induced damage. In conclusion, this study revealed that NPs-TPP-NIT may be promising radioprotectors and could therefore be applied to protect healthy tissues and organs from radiation during the treatment of cancer with radiotherapy. Keywords:ionizing radiation;nitronyl nitroxide radical;radioprotective effect;mitochondria-targeted;tumor radiotherapy

Preparation and Characterization of Mitochondrial-Targeted Nitronyl Nitroxide Loaded PLGA Nanoparticles for Brain Injury Induced by Hypobaric Hypoxia in Mice

Qingyue Da,Min Xu,Yiting Tian,Huiping Ma,Haibo Wang,Linlin Jing

Background: Oxidative stress is considered an important mechanism of acute high-altitude brain injury. Imidazole nitronyl nitroxide radicals are a class of stable organic radical scavengers that contain single electrons in their molecules. Therefore, in order to search for compounds with low toxicity and better effect against high-altitude brain injury, the preparation methods of PLGA nanoparticles (TPP-C6-HPN@PLGA-NPs) loaded with a synthesized mitochondria targeting imidazole nitronyl nitroxide were emphasized and investigated. Furthermore, its protective effect on brain injury caused by low-pressure hypoxia (HH) in mice was evaluated. Methods: Nanoparticles were prepared by emulsion solvent evaporation method, and the preparation method was optimized by Box Behnken design based on particle size, encapsulation efficiency (EE) and drug loading (DL). Physical characterization and release studies of the optimized NPs were conducted. The high altitude brain injury mice model was selected to evaluate the therapeutic effect of TPP-C6-HPN@PLGA-NPs in vivo. The histological and biochemical tests were conducted in serum and brain of mice exposed to HH condition. Results: The nanoparticle size was 120.63 nm, the EE was 89.30%, the DL was 6.82%, the polydispersity index (PDI) was 0.172, and the zeta potential was − 22.67 mV under optimal preparation process. In addition, TPP-C6-HPN@PLGA-NPs owned good stabilities and sustained drug releases. TPP-C6-HPN@PLGA-NP exhibited lower toxicity than TPP-C6-HPN and was well uptaken by PC12 cells. Histological and biochemical analysis demonstrated that TPP-C6-HPN@PLGA-NPs significantly reduced HH induced pathological lesions, oxidative stress, energy dysfunction and inflammation response of brain tissue. Furthermore, nanoparticles did not show significant toxicity to major organs such as the liver and kidneys, as well as hematology in mice. Conclusion: TPP-C6-HPN@PLGA-NPs exhibits good stability, low hemolysis rate, sustained release, low toxicity, and long residence time in brain tissue and can be used as a promising formulation for the proper treatment of HH-induced brain damage.

Oxidation-Triggered Formation of Diradical Cations from Paramagnetic Molecules and Their Spin Density Evolution

Di Wang,Dan Yao,Xinyu Li,Lingli Shi,Chunyuan Wang,Jie Li,Weili Kong,Yongliang Qin,Martin Baumgarten

Controllable intramolecular spin-polarized flow refers to the manipulation of spin-polarized electron transport within molecules through externally applied stimuli, thereby modulating their intramolecular spin characteristics and magnetic properties. In this work, we designed and synthesized four paramagnetic molecules, PDTN-NN, PDTN-IN, PO-NN, and PO-IN, by introducing nitronyl nitroxide (NN) and iminonitroxide (IN) radicals into phenothiazine and phenoxazine frameworks. Remarkably, we successfully generated the corresponding radical-substituted radical cations (diradical cations) and controlled their spin density distributions (SDDs) through redox stimuli. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and density functional theory (DFT) were employed to confirm the formation of diradical cations during the redox processes. Furthermore, EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations were also employed to provide clear evidence of intramolecular magnetic coupling in the diradical cations.

Electrospun Nano-boron–Ammonium Dinitramide Core–sheath Nanofibers

Peng Hao,Song Xiaolan,Song Dan,Wang Yi,An Chongwei,Luo Chunwang

The nano-boron powder (n-B) exhibits remarkable efficacy as a combustion catalyst, making it a prime candidate for use in solid propellant metal burners. Nevertheless, throughout the storage phase, the surface of n-B powder is prone to oxidation and substantial agglomeration, resulting in challenges with ignition and incomplete energy dissipation when utilizing boron powder. The synthesis of nano-boron/nitrocellulose/ammonium dinitramide@fluorine rubber (n-B/NC/ADN@F 2602 ) is accomplished via the coaxial electrospinning technique, with n-B uniformly dispersed within the core–shell fiber. The n-B is evenly distributed within the core–shell fiber, and as a result of F 2602 encapsulation, the moisture absorption of n-B/NC/ADN@F 2602 has decreased from 191.6 to 10.1%. In the course of combustion, the fibrous composite of n-B/NC/ADN@F 2602 undergoes an escalation in the rates of energy output and energy release, owing to the constraints imposed by external F 2602 . The n-B/NC/ADN@F 2602 demonstrates a 1.3-fold rise in peak pressure and a 1.15-fold increase in maximum pressure rise rate compared to n-B/NC/ADN. Furthermore, the maximum flame temperature is elevated by 150.5 ℃, and the combustion heat is augmented by approximately 8.7%. The findings of the energy performance assessment reveal that the mean molecular weight (MC) of the combustion byproduct of n-B/NC/ADN@F 2602 stands at 27.6 g·mol −1 , markedly surpassing that of n-B/NC/ADN. The aforementioned findings exemplify that coaxial electrospinning is an exceedingly efficacious technique for enhancing nanostructures, thereby amplifying the reactivity of energetic particles and offering novel insights into their application in energetic materials.

Effect of ammonium nitrate doping on the low-temperature thermal stability of ammonium dinitramide

Cui Yuanlu,Yang Rongjie,Lan Yanhua,Zhai Jinxian

Ammonium dinitramide (ADN), an emerging green oxidizer for rocket propellants, faces application limitations due to its low-temperature thermal decomposition characteristics. This study investigates the impact of a small amount of ammonium nitrate (AN) doped into ADN crystal on the stability of ADN crystal. ADN crystal samples containing AN were prepared by solution evaporation method and solvent-antisolvent method, respectively. The results show that AN and ADN form solid solution crystal by solution evaporation method, while solvent-antisolvent method produces phase-separated AN/ADN mixture. Isothermal thermogravimetric analysis conducted at 318–333 K revealed significant decomposition mass loss (3.2–17.5%) exclusively in solid solution samples, whereas the samples of phase-separated AN/ADN crystals show good thermal stability. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ion chromatography (IC) were used to investigate the influence of different forms and contents of AN in ADN samples on the low-temperature thermal decomposition properties of ADN. The kinetic models in different decomposition stages were obtained by isothermal kinetic method. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed the decomposition mechanism that the doping of AN induced the elongation of N–N bonds in the surrounding ADN structure, leading to instability of the ADN structure. These findings provide a theoretical basis for improving the stability of ADN in storage and application. Graphical

Breaking the energetic ammonium salts decomposition barrier: atomically dispersed Fe catalysts unveil the pyrolysis mechanisms and oxygen release strategies

Qiangqiang Lu,Yong Kou,Lei Xiao,Jiahao Yu,Chong Chen,Jun Di,Guigao Liu,Wei Jiang,Gazi Hao

The energetic ammonium salts represent a class of oxidizer materials that are extensively utilized in contemporary propellant systems. However, the catalytic pyrolysis mechanisms of these salts remain inadequately explored, hindering the efficient application of new energetic ammonium salts. In this study, taking typical energetic ammonium salts (ammonium perchlorate (AP), ammonium nitrate (AN) and ammonium dinitramide (ADN)) as examples, their pyrolysis on the surface of the prepared Fe single-atom catalysts and the combustion flames of the powders were investigated. We learned that Fe single-atoms can promote the pyrolysis and enhance the flame intensity of ammonium salts. The mechanism of Fe single-atom catalyzed ammonium salts has been investigated through density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations, and the results well explained the experimental phenomena. The AP molecule produces oxygen most readily, primarily through the pyrolysis of *ClO 4 (−3.70 eV). The idea of solving the heat-absorbing decomposition of AN is proposed to catalyze its complete decomposition and to avoid the production of NO. The low decomposition temperature of ADN is due to the five major pyrolysis pathways of the molecule and the presence of self-catalytic intermediates. This paper offers guidelines for comprehending the pyrolysis and combustion mechanisms of energetic ammonium salts.

Synthesis of hyperbranched polymers by free radical addition-coupling polymerization with A3/B2 and A2A′/B2 approaches

Yaobin Liu,Zhiqiang Fan

Two tribromide compounds, 1,3-(propanoic acid, 2-bromo-)-2-(2-bromo-1-oxopropylamino)propyl ester (A 1 ) and trimethylolpropane tris(2-bromopropionate) (A 2 ), were synthesized. By Cu/ N,N,N′,N′,N″ -pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA)-mediated radical addition-coupling polymerization (RACP) of 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane (MNP) with the tribromide compounds, two types of hyperbranched polymers were synthesized under mild conditions, respectively. Polymerization degrees of the polymers increased with time gradually, which is in line with a step-growth polymerization mechanism. By tracing the polymerization process by gel permeation chromatography and NMR analysis, proper reaction conditions to get hyperbranched polymers was obtained. Based on the results of NMR analysis on the polymer chain structure, mechanism of forming hyperbranched polymer has been proposed, which includes formation of carbon radicals from the tribromo monomer through single electron transfer, their reaction with MNP to form nitroxide radicals, and cross-coupling reaction of the nitroxide radicals with other carbon radicals. The gelation point of the A 2 -MNP system is larger than that of the A 1 -MNP system, indicating that probability of intramolecular cyclization in A 2 -MNP RACP system is higher than the A 1 -MNP system. The reactivity of —NHCOCH(CH 3 )Br group of A 1 is lower than its two —OCOCH(CH 3 )Br groups, and this resulted in longer distance between two adjacent branch points in the hyperbranched polymer of A 1 -MNP than the A 2 -MNP system. It is possible to adjust the chain structure of RACP-based hyperbranched polymer by changing the reactivity of the functional groups in A 3 monomer. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Nitazoxanide protects against heart failure with preserved ejection and metabolic syndrome induced by high-fat diet (HFD) plus L-NAME “two-hit” in mice

Jiahui Chen,Liping Zhang,Ting Xie,Xiao Zhang,Congcong Pan,Fangli Sun,Wenfeng Li,Zhijie Sun,Deli Dong

The clinical antiprotozoal drug nitazoxanide has been demonstrated to improve the experimental diabetes mellitus, lipid metabolism disorders, atherosclerosis and inhibit inflammation. Since the pathogenesis of heart failure with preserved ejection (HFpEF) is multifactorial and closely associated with the aforementioned diseases, we aim to study the effect of nitazoxanide on high-fat diet (HFD) plus L-NAME (N ω -nitro-L-arginine methyl ester)-induced HFpEF and metabolic syndrome in mice. We found that oral nitazoxanide improved cardiac hypertrophy, cardiac fibrosis, cardiac diastolic dysfunction, increased blood pressure, impaired exercise tolerance, impaired glucose handling, serum lipid disorders, hepatic steatosis, increased weight of white adipose tissues and kidney fibrosis in HFD+L-NAME-treated mice. In the established HFD+L-NAME-induced HFpEF and metabolic syndrome mouse model, therapeutic treatment with nitazoxanide rescued HFD+L-NAME-induced pathological phenotypes as mentioned above. The in vitro experiments revealed that tizoxanide, the active metabolite of nitazoxanide, increased the basal mitochondria metabolism of cardiomyocytes, inhibited cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and collagen secretion from cardiac fibroblasts, and relaxed phenylephrine- and U46619-induced constriction of rat mesenteric arteries, indicating that the direct effect of tizoxanide might partly contribute to the protective effect of nitazoxanide against HFpEF in vivo . The present study suggests that nitazoxanide might be a potential drug for HFpEF and metabolic syndrome therapy.
