Blue photoluminescent WS 2 quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized using a simple top-down method from natural raw mineral tungsten disulfide via tip ultrasonication followed by centrifugation in a water-ethanol (0.7/0.3 ratio) as eco-friendly solvent. Cavitation process at a high power (300 W) led to the breaking of bulk WS 2 flakes to its quantum dots. The as synthesized WS 2 QDs showed blue photoluminescence upon UV excitation. The synthesized WS 2 QDs were analysed by UV–vis and photoluminescence spectrophotometry , transmission electron microscopy , atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction. According to the transmission electron microscopy images, the size of WS 2 QDs was obtained as 5 nm in average.

Tungsten disulfide (WS2) monolayer is a direct band gap semiconductor. The growth of WS2monolayer hinders the progress of its investigation. In this paper, we prepared the WS2monolayer through chemical vapor transport deposition. This method makes it easier for the growth of WS2monolayer through the heterogeneous nucleation-and-growth process. The crystal defects introduced by the heterogeneous nucleation could promote the photoluminescence (PL) emission. We observed the strong photoluminescence emission in the WS2monolayer, as well as thermal quenching, and the PL energy redshift as the temperature increases. We attribute the thermal quenching to the energy or charge transfer of the excitons. The redshift is related to the dipole moment of WS2.Keywords:chemical vapor transport deposition;tungsten disulfide;monolayer;photoluminescence

In this paper, platinum sulfide decorated WS 2 microflakes (PtS/WS 2 ) heterostructure nanocomposites were prepared by an in-situ chemical reduction process. The chemiresistive-type gas sensor based on the synthesized PtS/WS 2 heterostructure nanocomposites exhibited a significantly improved sensing properties compared to that of the pure WS 2 microflakes at different concentration of NH 3 from 1 ppm to 10 ppm at room temperature . As the concentrations of PtS nanoparticles decorated on the surface of WS 2 microflakes increased, the response of the PtS/WS 2 heterostructure sensor to ammonia firstly increased when the concentration of PtS increased up to 1 wt%, whereas above 1%, the response decreased instead. Moreover, it was found that the response speeds of the PtS-decorated WS 2 were significantly improved compared to that pure WS 2 . The sensors also exhibited excellent selectivity to formaldehyde, toluene, acetone , methanol and ethanol at room temperature. The sensing mechanisms were studied by using the in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The enhanced sensing properties could be explained by “electronic sensitization” effect induced by the PtS/WS 2 heterostructure, being confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, such as tungsten disulfide (WS2), have been actively studied as suitable candidates for photocatalysts due to their unique structural and electronic properties. The presence of active sites at the edges and the higher specific surface area of these materials are crucial to the photocatalytic activity of the hydrogen evolution reaction. Here, WS2quantum dots (QDs) have been successfully synthesized by using a combination of grinding and sonication techniques. The morphology of the QDs was observed, using transmission electron microscopy and an atomic force microscope, to have uniform sizes of less than 5 nm. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements show that the current density of WS2QDs under illumination is almost two times higher than that of pristine WS2. Furthermore, these high-quality WS2QDs may have various applications in optoelectronics, solar cells, and biomedicine. Keywords:tungsten disulfide;quantum dots;sonication;photocatalysis

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) and their heterostructures have by far stimulated growing research interests in the field of optoelectronics and photocatalysis . In this regard, scalable fabrication of 2D TMDs at an environmentally-benign and cost-effective manner via liquid phase exfoliation is a particularly fascinating concept. Herein we report a facile and green strategy to produce few-layered WS 2 suspensions at a large scale by a direct exfoliation of commercial WS 2 powders in water-ethanol mixtures. In turn, by making full use of the features of 2D layered WS 2 , a novel 2D WS 2 /MoS 2 composite was constructed for the first time via an in-situ hydrothermal reaction to grow MoS 2 nanoflakes onto few-layered WS 2 basal planes. The as-obtained WS 2 /MoS 2 heterostructure was investigated for photocatalytic applications. Such a hybrid material demonstrated superior photocatalytic activity in the photocatalysis of organic dye molecules relative to that of pristine 2D WS 2 , MoS 2 and their physical mixtures. This enhancement was associated with the 2D WS 2 /MoS 2 heterostructuring effect. In addition, comparisons of the photocatalytic performances of our heterojunctions with those of recently reported 2D TMD-based hybrid materials manifested a significantly higher efficiency.

In view of the increasing threat of chlortetracycline (CTC) in water to human health and the ecological environment, how to detect and remove CTC in wastewater simply and effectively remains an important and challenging task. Herein, a multifunctional platform for the simultaneous detection and degradation of CTC is developed by in-situ synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) in the two-dimensional (2D) WS 2 interface by covalent bonding. The as-prepared 2D WS 2 /CDs nanocomposites can not only be used as an intelligent fluorescence probe for CTC detection with good sensitivity (LOD = 7.5 nM) and selectivity but also has good photodegradation ability for CTC (degradation efficiency attained 85.58%). Moreover, the possible mechanisms for the detection and photodegradation of CTC by 2D WS 2 /CDs were also investigated by theoretical calculations, time-resolved fluorescence decay curves, and electron spin resonance (ESR) analyses. The exceptional photoelectric properties of 2D WS 2 /CDs are ascribed to the CDs bound onto the 2D WS 2 interface by covalent bonding forming heterojunctions, which effectively promote strong interfacial interactions between CDs and 2D WS 2 , thereby providing more effective charge transfer and enhancing the detection efficiency and photocatalytic activity. In addition, the possible degradation pathway for CTC was speculated via identification of intermediates and frontier electron density calculation. Overall, this study not only proves that the 2D WS 2 /CDs nanocomposites have great potential for the simultaneous detection and degradation of CTC in aquatic environments but also provides a novel idea for the efficient and stable design of multifunctional nanomaterials for environmental pollution monitoring and purification, which is of great significance to both practical applications and basic research.

In this study, few-layered tungsten disulfide (WS2) was prepared using a liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) method, and its thermal catalytic effects on an important kind of energetic salts, dihydroxylammonium-5,5-bistetrazole-1,1-diolate (TKX-50), were investigated. Few-layered WS2 nanosheets were obtained successfully from LPE process. And the effects of the catalytic activity of the bulk and few-layered WS2 on the thermal decomposition behavior of TKX-50 were studied by using synchronous thermal analysis (STA). Moreover, the thermal analysis data was analyzed furtherly by using the thermokinetic software AKTS. The results showed the WS2 materials had an intrinsic thermal catalysis performance for TKX-50 thermal decomposition. With the few-layered WS2 added, the initial decomposition temperature and activation energy () of TKX-50 had been decreased more efficiently. A possible thermal catalysis decomposition mechanism was proposed based on WS2. Two dimensional-layered semiconductor WS2 materials under thermal excitation can promote the primary decomposition of TKX-50 by enhancing the H-transfer progress.

Monolayer MoS 2 (WS 2 ) nanosheets have triggered tremendous interest due to their fascinating unique properties, but high-yield production of single-layer MoS 2 (WS 2 ) still remains an enormous challenge and of great interest. Herein, we report a facile efficient partial etching strategy to tailor thickness and lateral size of MoS 2 (WS 2 ) so as to increase the fraction of edges, which remarkably enhanced the yield of monolayer MoS 2 (20%) and WS 2 (12%) nanosheets by liquid phase exfoliation. As a proof of concept, the exfoliated monolayer MoS 2 (WS 2 ) nanosheets were applied as the cocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . Notably, the optimized hybrids exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution performance, which are over 31-fold (MoS 2 /CdS) and 47-fold (WS 2 /CdS) higher that of bare CdS counterpart, respectively. Hence, this work not only may pave the new way for the high-yield production of transition-metal dichalcogenides monolayers by liquid phase exfoliation, but also provide the possibility for the further efficiently exfoliating other two-dimension layered materials.

The seek for efficient and low-cost heterogeneous catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation holds great promise in the treatment of organic contaminants. Natural iron ore (IO) has been identified as a potential catalyst due to its low environmental risk and cost-savings. Herein, the commercial tungsten sulfide (WS 2 ) was employed to significantly enhance the performance of IO towards PMS activation (WS 2 /IO/PMS) for the removal of pollutants. This system demonstrated remarkable performance, with >98.2% removal of organic pollutants in 60 min, including dyes and antibiotics, under the optimized conditions of 0.50 g/L IO, 0.10 g/L WS 2 , 2.0 mM PMS, and initial pH 6.0. The apparent degradation rate constant ( k ) of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in WS 2 /IO/PMS system (0.073 min −1 ) was about 30.4-fold and 104.3-fold higher than that of in WS 2 /PMS system (0.0024 min −1 ) and IO/PMS system (0.0007 min −1 ), respectively. Mechanism insights revealed the crucial role of WS 2 in boosting the degradation kinetics in the WS 2 /IO/PMS system. The exposed W 4+ or S 2− species on WS 2 surface were the dominant reactive sites responsible for the promotion of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycles and subsequently the PMS activation. Importantly, the electrochemical analysis demonstrates that the iron ions released from IO were prone to adsorb onto the WS 2 surface, forming active Fe species with high oxidative potential, which remarkably accelerated the electron transfer for Fe 2+ regeneration, thereby enhancing PMS activation to generate reactive oxygen species like hydroxyl radicals ( OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ) and superoxide radicals (O 2 − ). Furthermore, the practicability of WS 2 /IO/PMS system was validated by treating various pollutants and investigating the interference of coexisting anions in water. Overall, this study provides a green and advanced strategy to enhance the PMS activation by natural iron ore for efficient water decontamination.

Advanced oxidation process based on heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has received significant attention in wastewater remediation. Herein, a facile and effective electrochemical method was introduced in a tungsten sulfide (WS2)-activated PMS process for the removal of a typical azo dye Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in aqueous solution. It was found that the electrochemical activation could remarkably promote the removal of organic pollutants by coupling with WS2/PMS system. The elimination of AO7 in the electro-assisted WS2-activated PMS (E/WS2/PMS) system achieved 95.8% of AO7 removal in 30 min, with the optimal conditions of 1.0 g/L WS2, 1.0 mM PMS, current density of 1.0 mA/cm2and initial pH of 6.5. Based on quenching experiments and EPR techniques, mechanistic studies confirmed that hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) are the primary reactive oxygen species for the oxidation of pollutants. In addition, the influences of pH, WS2dosage, PMS concentration, current density, common anions and humic acid on the AO7 removal are also investigated in detail. Furthermore, the system exhibited resistance to aqueous matrices, verifying the accepted applicability in real water (i.e., Yangtze River water and Shahu Lake water). In summary, this study demonstrates a green system for the effective removal of contaminants in water, holding significant implications for practical application.

Tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ), a two-dimensional adsorbent material, has garnered great attention in removing lead ions (Pb 2+ ) from water due to their extensive exposed adsorption sites. However, WS 2 nanosheets inevitably agglomerated and stacked during the preparation and adsorption process, leading to reduced adsorption efficiency. Current method of enhancing WS 2 dispersion is mainly blending with synthetic polymers, but these synthetic polymers themselves do not possess adsorption properties, resulting adsorption effect enhancement poorly. Here, lignin extracted from walnut shells (WS) was intercalated into bulk WS 2 to prepare highly dispersible Lignin/WS 2 composites with synergistic adsorption effects. The spatial resistance and electrostatic repulsion of the intercalated lignin effectively exfoliated bulk WS 2 and stabilized their dispersion. The synergistic adsorption arises from lignin’s oxygen-containing groups and WS 2 nanosheets’ sulfur-rich surface, which significantly enhanced Pb 2 + removal (∼66.9 mg/g). This value surpassed pure lignin and bulk WS 2 by 1.7 and 25.0 times, respectively. Adsorption follows pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption of Pb 2+ by the Lignin/WS 2 composite belongs to multi molecular layer chemical adsorption. This work provides a novel strategy for lignin-based adsorbents in water remediation.

Tungsten trioxide dihydrate (WO3·2H2O) nanoplates are prepared by in situ anodic oxidation of tungsten disulfide (WS2) film on carbon fiber paper (CFP). The WO3·2H2O/WS2 hybrid catalyst exhibits excellent synergistic effects which facilitate the kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrochromatic effect takes place via hydrogen intercalation into WO3·2H2O. This process is accelerated by the desirable proton diffusion coefficient in the layered WO3·2H2O. Hydrogen spillover from WO3·2H2O to WS2 occurs via atomic polarization caused by the electric field of the charges on the planar defect or edge active sites of WS2. The optimized hybrid catalyst presents a geometrical current density of 100 mA cm–2 at 152 mV overpotential with a Tafel slope of ∼54 mV per decade, making the materials one of the most active nonprecious metal HER catalysts.
