Antibiotic residues in effluents discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been considered high-risk organics due to biorefractory property and potential toxicity. Secondary pollution and unsustainability existed in advanced treatment of secondary effluent are currently in urgent need of improvement. In this study, a sustainably green strategy based on Rhodopseudomonas palustris ( R.palustris ) by regulating the structure of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) was proposed for the first time to achieve efficiently removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ). Results showed that 0.2 V was the optimal external potential for R.palustris to efficiently remove SDZ, where the biodegradation rate constant obtained at this potential was 4.87-folds higher than that in open-circuit mode and a complete removal was achieved within 58 h in the presence of EPS extracted at this potential. Three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) spectra analysis suggested that tryptophan protein-like, tyrosine protein-like, humic acid-like and fulvic acid-like substances present in EPS were the main effective components which was responsible for the indirect photodegradation of SDZ. The quenching experiments showed that 3 EPS* was the dominant reactive species which accounted for 90% of SDZ removal. This study provides new implications for the advanced treatment of secondary effluent organic matters by developing eco-friendly bioaugmentation technology and biomaterials.

Molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) has been employed for electrochemical sensor preparation with good selectivity. However, to restrict the non-specific adsorption, the conductivity of MIP is usually unsatisfying, which limits its sensitivity for template detection. To achieve both of selectivity and sensitivity, a MIP electrochemical sensor was designed and fabricated by the electropolymerization of pyrrole in the presence of aloe-emodin (AE, template molecule) on carbon nanoparticles modified electrode in this work. Thionine (TH), being added in solution in advance, played double roles for AE recognition and detection. As an analogue of AE, TH was adsorbed into imprinted cavities and then was replaced by AE, indicating the good selectivity of the sensor. This replacement of TH by AE was also demonstrated by the result of computational simulation. As an electro-active probe, the peak current of TH decreased and peak current of AE increased based on the replacement of TH by AE. A current ratiometric signal defined as |Δ i AE |/|Δ i TH | was used for AE sensitive detection. Thus, the replacements of TH by AE demonstrated that the sensor possessed high sensitivity and good selectivity. A linear range of 1.0 × 10 −7 -1.0 × 10 -4 mol/L for AE detection was obtained with a limit of detection of 7.5 × 10 -8 mol/L. And the sensor has been applied to analyze AE in real samples with satisfactory results. The simple, smart, and effective strategy presented in this work can be further used to prepare electrochemical sensors for other compounds selective recognition and sensitive detection.

We are just beginning to exploit the fascinating potential of thionine , called electrochemical probe that can selectively recognize specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as tools for the detection of tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbons phenanthrene (PHE) and anthracene (ANT). A novel electrochemical sensing platform by modification of electroactive thionine functionalized graphene onto glass carbon electrode (Th/GRs/GCE) surface was constructed. The immobilized thionine showed a remarkable stability, which may benefit from the π–π stacking force with graphene. Under optimum conditions, the proposed electrochemical sensor exhibited high sensitivity and low detection limit for detecting PHE and ANT. The total amount of PHE and ANT could be quantified in a wide range of 10 pM–0.1 μM with a good linearity ( R 2 = 0.9979) and a low detection limit of 0.1 pM ( S / N = 3). Compounds which possess one or two benzene rings or PAHs with more than three rings, such as benzene, naphthalene (NAP), benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and pyrene (PYR) show little interference on the detection. Consequently, a simple and sensitive electrochemical method was proposed for the determination of PHE and ANT, which was used to determine PHE and ANT in waste water samples. The electrochemical method provides a general tool that complements the commonly used spectroscopic methods and immune method for the detection of PAHs.

The design of the electrode materials for electrochemical sensors is crucial for the simultaneous fast detection of ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). A hierarchical porous carbon material (KACM) was prepared via high-temperature calcination and KOH activation using azalea (a species of rhododendron) biomass as the carbon source. KACM and thionine (Thi) were simultaneously assembled on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to construct a porous carbon/thionine ratiometric electrochemical biosensor for the detection of ascorbic acid and uric acid. Electrochemical evaluation showed that the Thi/KACM/GCE has good electrochemical performance, strong catalytic activity toward AA and UA oxidation, and good separation of the two oxidation peaks. Under the optimized conditions, Thi/KACM/GCE has a wide linear range (0.05–9 mM) and low detection limit (6.4 μM for AA and 10 μM for UA). Additionally, the biosensor exhibited good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. Thi/KACM/GCE was used for the simultaneous detection of AA and UA in human urine with 99.4–101.0% recovery of the compounds. This study reports for the first time the use of azaleas in electrochemical biosensors, and the results show that small changes in the structural properties of biomass materials can affect their electrochemical properties.

Herein, a label-free and ultrasensitive electrochemical aptasensor for the determination of lead(II) (Pb2+) was described. It was based on the application of a N,P dual-doped carbon dot–chitosan (N,P-CD–CS) composite as the signal molecule carrier and an aptamer (APT) as the specific binding probe for Pb2+ that were self-assembled on the surface of a gold electrode (GE). 6-Mercapto-1-hexanol (MCH) was used to block the nonspecific binding sites, and the electro-active molecule thionine (THi) was used as the signaling probe. The differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) response of THi at a rather low working potential of −0.17 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) was used to detect Pb2+. The electrochemical performances of the resulting modified electrode were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under optimal experimental conditions, the modified electrode exhibited excellent DPV response depending on the concentration of Pb2+ in the 0.01 nM to 10 nM range. The limit of detection was 3.8 pM (at S/N = 3). The modified electrode displayed good reproducibility and excellent stability. It was successfully applied for the determination of Pb2+ in real water samples.
