To solve the slow kinetics of polysulfide conversion reaction in Li-S battery, many transition metal nitrides were developed for sulfur hosts. Herein, novel polyaniline-coated porous vanadium nitride (VN) microrods were synthesized via a calcination, washing and polyaniline-coating process, which served as sulfur host for Li-S battery exhibited high electrochemical performance. The porous VN microrods with high specific surface area provided enough interspace to overcome the volume change of the cathode. The outer layer of polyaniline as a conductive shell enhanced the cathode conductivity, effectively blocked the shuttle effect of polysulfides, thus improving the cycling capacity of Li-S battery. The cathode exhibited an initial capacity of 1007 mAh g−1at 0.5 A g−1, and the reversible capacity remained at 735 mAh g−1over 150 cycles. Keywords:VN;microrods;sulfur host;cathode;lithium–sulfur battery

Due to the demands for high performance and ecological and economical alternatives to conventional lithium-ion batteries (LiBs), the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with remarkably higher theoretical capacity (1675 mA h g −1 ) has become one of the extensive research focus directions worldwide. However, poor conductivity of sulfur, critical cyclability problems due to shuttle of polysulfides as intermediate products of the cathodic reaction, and large volume variation of the sulfur composite cathode upon operation are the major bottlenecks impeding the implementation of the next-generation Li-S batteries. In this work, a unique three-dimensional (3D) interconnected macrocellular porous carbon (PC) architecture decorated with metal Ni nanoparticles was synthesized by a simple and facile strategy. The as-fabricated Ni/PC composite combines the merits of conducting carbon skeleton and highly adsorptive abilities of Ni, which resulted in efficient trapping of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and their fast conversion in the electrochemical process. Owing to these synergistic advantageous features, the composite exhibited good cycling stability (512.3 mA h g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1 C with an extremely low capacity fading rate 0.03 % per cycle), and superior rate capability (747.5 mA h g −1 at 2 C). Accordingly, such Ni nanoparticles embedded in a renewable puffed corn-derived carbon prepared via a simple and effective route represent a promising active type of sulfur host matrix to fabricate high-performance Li-S batteries.

Lithium sulfur (Li–S) batteries are regarded as one of the most promising next-generation secondary batteries. However, the insulating nature of active materials, inevitable shuttle effect caused by dissolution of intermediate polysulfides , and severe volume expansion during lithiation prevent their practical application. Herein, we report a novel sulfur host composed of amorphous TiO 2 nanofilm interfaces coating on mesoporous carbon by controlling the hydrolytic process of tetrabutyl titanate on the surface of 3D interconnect conductive carbon matrix. The sulfur host shows high surface area, considerable electrolyte wetting capability and strong absorption for lithium polysulfides. Owe to the rational design and outstanding properties, the sulfur cathode with the high active material content of ∼74% and mass loading of ∼3.2 mg cm −2 exhibits a high initial specific capacity of 1455 mAh·g −1 and maintained 1242 mAh·g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 C (1C = 1675 mAh·g −1 ) current density, and also delivers excellent long term cycling performance at 1 C with initial capacity of 720 mAh·g −1 and capacity remained up to 81% after 1000 cycles.

Rational design of a porous sulfur host material is important to mitigate the lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttle effect in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. In this study, a three-dimensionally ordered macropore N-doped TiO2 embedded with dense carbon nanotubes and CoNiO nanoparticles (CNT/CoNiO@N–TiO2) is prepared as a sulfur host material. This porous structured metal oxide N–TiO2 framework offers good structural stability and polarity toward LiPS accommodation and adsorption. The in situ-grown CNT within the porous N–TiO2 provides a physical barrier for the LiPS migration and benefits the conductivity of the host material. Furthermore, the embedded CoNiO nanoparticles have high synergistic catalytic activity for the LiPS conversion. Accordingly, the sulfur-loaded CNT/CoNiO@N–TiO2 host achieves a high initial capacity of 1004 mA h g–1 at 0.2 C and excellent cycling performance with a capacity decay of 0.047% per cycle in 500 cycling test at 1.0 C. This work provides an effective strategy for the design of metal oxide-based sulfur host materials in Li–S batteries.

In this paper, the natural waste pinecone as a carbon precursor for the generation of satisfactory sulfur host materials in lithium–sulfur batteries was realized by introducing molybdenum carbide nanoparticles into the derived carbon structure. The conductive pinecone-derived carbon doped with N, O reveals an expansive specific surface area, facilitating the accommodation of a higher sulfur load. Moreover, the integration of Mo2C nanoparticles also significantly enhances its chemical affinity and catalytic capacity for polysulfides (LiPSs) to alleviate the shuttle effect and accelerate sulfur redox conversion. As a result, the WPC-Mo2C/S electrode displays excellent electrochemical performance, including a low capacity decay rate of 0.074% per cycle during 600 cycles at 1 C and an outstanding rate capacity (631.2 mAh g−1at 3 C). Moreover, with a high sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm−2, the WPC-Mo2C/S electrode shows a high area capacity of 5.1 mAh cm−2after 60 cycles at 0.2 C.

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) wrapped metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived cobalt doped porous carbon polyhedrons synthesized via a carbonization process, are for the first time used for sulfur immobilizers (RGO/C–Co-S) as cathodes for high performance lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries. The RGO/C–Co–S cathode exhibits greatly improved electrochemical performance, showing excellent specific capacity of 949 mAh g −1 at 300th cycle at a current density 0.3 A g −1 , displaying enhanced rate capability with specific capacity of 772, 704 and 606 mAh g −1 at current density of 0.5, 1 and 2 A g −1 , respectively. The synergetic effect of MOFs-derived porous carbon, homogeneously distributed Co nanoparticles and RGO nanosheets simultaneously contributes to the confinement of sulfur species. The presence of abundant mesopores and micropores is conducive to immobilize large amounts of S species. The homogenously inlaid ultrafine Co nanoparticles can further immobilize sulfur by chemical interactions between Co and S/polysulfides. The RGO nanosheets tightly wrapped on carbon hosts act as barrier layers to prevent polysulfides from diffusing out of the matrix, further suppressing shuttle effect. The porous structure and the RGO can effectively alleviate the volume changes resulted from charge–discharge process. This design strategy can be inspiring for MOF-derived materials in energy storage applications .

All-solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) based on sulfide solid-state electrolytes have attracted considerable attention due to their inherent immunity to the “shuttle effect,” superior safety characteristics, and high energy density. However, the insulating nature of sulfur (S8) necessitates the incorporation of conductive carbon-based carriers to enhance electrochemical performance. Notably, the dimensional structure and morphological characteristics of these carbon carriers significantly influence their physicochemical properties, thereby affecting the overall battery performance. In this study, we systematically investigated three representative carbon materials with distinct dimensionalities: zero-dimensional Ketjen Black (KB), one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and two-dimensional graphene (Gr) as sulfur hosts for ASSLSBs. Comprehensive electrochemical evaluations revealed that the S@CNT composite delivered the highest initial capacity exceeding 1200 mAh g–1 at 0.1C, significantly outperforming S@KB (>200 mAh g–1) and S@Gr (>700 mAh g–1). Furthermore, the S@CNT electrode demonstrated exceptional rate capability among the three materials. These findings elucidate the critical relationship between the dimensionality/morphology of carbon hosts and the electrochemical performance of ASSLSBs, offering valuable insights for the rational design of high-performance sulfur-based composite electrodes for next-generation solid-state batteries.

Porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs) have rich channels for transporting ions, molecules, and nanoparticles, but the control over their porous structures is a challenge. Here, we report a scalable electrospinning technique by using poly(tetrafluoroethylene) as a pore template, boric acid as a cross-linking agent, and polyvinyl alcohol and polyurethane as dual carbon precursors to fabricate flexible PCNFs with tunable geometries and macro/meso/microporous structures. In the water solvent, the negatively charged template cross-links with the positively charged carbon precursors to form a stable sol for electrospinning. By varying the mass ratios of these precursors, the electrospun hybrid nanofibers are directly transformed into B–F–N–O doped PCNFs with tunable macro-, meso-, and micropores after carbonization. The porosity of an individual PCNF is as high as ∼85%, and the pore volume can be tuned from 0.23 to 0.58 cm3·g–1. When constructing high-sulfur-content (86 wt %) electrodes with the freestanding PCNF films, the porous structures with rich electroactive sites provide rapid pathways for poly-anions and have strong chemisorption of poly-sulfides, leading to a great electrochemical performance. The reported strategy offers a new perspective for synthesizing hierarchical PCNFs with appealing applications.

Shuttle effect of the dissolved intermediates is regarded as the primary cause that leads to fast capacity degradation of Li–S battery. Herein, a microporous carbon-coated sulfur composite with novel rambutan shape (R-S@MPC) is synthesized from microporous carbon-coated rambutan-like zinc sulfide (R-ZnS@MPC), via an in situ oxidation process. The R-ZnS is employed as both template and sulfur precursor. The carbon frame of R-S@MPC composite possesses three kinds of pores that are distinctly separated from each other in space and are endowed with the exclusive functions. The central macropore serves as buffer pool to accommodate the dissolved lithium polysulfides (LPSs) and volumetric variation during cycling. The marginal straight-through mesoporous, connected with the central macropore, takes the responsibility of sulfur storage. The micropores, evenly distributed in the outer carbon shell of the as-synthesized R-S@MPC, enable the blockage of LPSs. These pores are expected to perform their respective single function, and collaborate synergistically to suppress the sulfur loss. Therefore, it delivers an outstanding cycling stability, decay rate of 0.013% cycle −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C, when the sulfur loading is kept at 4 mg cm −2 .

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted wide attention in the field of rechargeable batteries due to their high theoretical energy density. However, the severe “shuttle effect” of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the slow conversion kinetics are key factors restricting the commercial application of LSBs. To address these issues, we designed and prepared a coral-like composite of CoP-modified polyaniline-derived carbon chain skeleton (CoP/C) as the sulfur host for LSBs. The carbon chains can provide multidirectional channels for the transport of Li + and electron; and the uniformly scattered CoP can adsorb the LiPSs through chemical adsorption and simultaneously promote their conversion, thus the “shuttle effect” can be effectively alleviated. Meanwhile, the effect of the amount of aniline monomer on the electrochemical performance of sulfur cathode were studied. After sulfur loading, the CoP/C-300/S (with aniline monomer addition of 300 μL) exhibits the best electrochemical performance. At 1 C, after 500 cycles, it still maintains a reversible specific capacity of 478 mA h g −1 , with a decay rate of 0.074% per cycle, indicating its excellent cycling stability. This work provides a new approach for the application of CoP material in advanced LSBs.

Magnesium/lithium-sulfur hybrid batteries (ML-SHBs) are considered to be the strongest candidate to replace lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high volumetric energy density and dendrite-free. In this study, S@FeS 2 /CoS 2 was prepared on the basis of a hollow, eggshell-shaped construction by using the less-liquid method. In this method, the reactants carry water of crystallization during the reaction to provide a liquid environment, and the metal ions on the surface of the droplets promote the formation of S@FeS 2 /CoS 2 . The configuration of the eggshell facilitates the generation of additional reaction interfaces, thereby expediting the interaction with the electrolyte and facilitating transport processes. This structure promotes efficient charge transfer and accelerates the transport rate. By implementing strategies such as heterostructure building and bimetallic doping, the controllable construction of the morphological structure can be realized. The induced effect of heterostructured interfaces can be excited within the nanocrystals to form an electric field, which effectively reduces the ion diffusion barrier and synchronously enhances the interfacial electron transfer efficiency by modulating the electronic behavior. The discharge specific capacity of the cell was found to be 1096.73 mAh g −1 at a current density of 200 mA g −1 , exhibiting a high rate capacity. The Coulombic efficiency remained at 99.8 % after 100 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g −1 .

The recycling of spent graphite from lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is gaining significant importance, emphasizing the urgent need for effective treatment and recycling methods. This work focuses on the recovery of graphite from waste lithium-ion batteries and the exploitation of feasibility of utilizing the upgraded graphite as the sulfur (S) hosts in lithium‑sulfur batteries (LSBs). The recovered graphite (RG) from end-of-life LIBs is etched with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to obtain layered graphite (LG). The results show that the successful implementation of this etching process leads to the formation of LG with enlarged layer spacing. Then, the LG/S cathode material is obtained by melting and diffusing sulfur. Thanks to the synergistic effect between micropores and mesopores , as well as the increased degree of graphitization in LG, the LG/S cathode with up to 74 % sulfur has an initial discharge specific capacity of 1312 mA h g −1 at a current density of 0.1C. Its reversible capacity stabilizes at 700 mA h g −1 after 500 cycles, with a low-capacity decay rate of 0.093 % for each cycle. This study presents a novel approach to design cost-effective sulfur‑carbon composite cathodes for LSBs by utilizing spent graphite from end-of-life LIBs.
