The mesh-like hard carbon loaded SbPO 4 (SbPO 4 /NTC) was harvested and employed as anode material for sodium ion batteries. Profiting from prominent capacitance, porous structure, and sufficient buffering space, the composite realizes high electrochemical kinetics for sodium ion storage. The SbPO 4 /NTC composite gains impressive battery properties, such as high discharge capacity of 413.7 mAh g −1 under 0.5 A g −1 after 200 cycles and conspicuous rate performance of 365.7 mAh g −1 even at 6 A g −1 . In addition, the composite demonstrates a wide operation-temperature window with favorable capacities of 194.3–397.6 mAh g −1 from −10 °C to 60 °C at 0.1 A g −1 . The phase transition and sodium storage mechanism are elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Therefore, the SbPO 4 /NTC composite has a great potential for high-efficient sodium ion storage.

Heteroatom-doped carbon photocatalysts have attracted increasing attention since they are inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient. Herein, sulfur-doped carbon photocatalysts were prepared by a one-step low-temperature carbonization method using sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) as a starting material. The physicochemical properties of the carbon photocatalysts were characterized by N 2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and so on. Compared with the carbon photocatalyst derived from alkali lignin, the sulfur-doped carbons from SLS can improve the degradation of tetracycline by nearly 40%. Sulfur species, i.e., sulfone and sulfoxide, can reduce the bandgap and promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers under visible light irradiation. The recycling experimental results of S-C-N 2 -12 illustrate that the catalyst is stable without a remarkable loss in photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline after five successive runs, suggesting that the sulfur-containing species coordinated on the carbon surface are relatively stable. The results of radical-assisted electron spin resonance (ESR) and radical scavenger experiments show that h + plays a major role in the degrading of tetracycline. These findings suggest that the sulfur-doped carbon photocatalysts have a great potential in pollutant degradation and wastewater treatment.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have gained considerable attention as next-generation energy storage devices due to their inherent safety, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. However, their widespread application is severely hampered by uncontrolled zinc dendrite growth and detrimental side reactions (e.g., hydrogen evolution, corrosion, and passivation), which lead to reduced Coulombic efficiency and shortened cycle life. Current strategies to improve zinc anode stability mainly focus on artificial interface coatings, electrode structure design, and electrolyte optimization. Among these approaches, electrolyte additive engineering is considered the most promising for practical applications due to its simplicity, low cost, and excellent scalability. Nevertheless, conventional additives (including metal ions, polymers, and surfactants) typically address only single issues (either dendrite suppression or side reaction mitigation), failing to achieve synergistic effects. In this work, we developed sulfur-doped carbon dots (S-CDs) as a novel bifunctional electrolyte additive to significantly enhance AZIB performance. The carbon dot additive was synthesized via a facile calcination method, followed by systematic characterization of its structure and properties using methods such as fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Comprehensive electrochemical evaluations were conducted to investigate the influence of S-CDs on zinc deposition behavior and overall battery performance. Experimental results demonstrate the successful synthesis of sulfur-doped carbon dots with abundant surface functional groups. During battery operation, the strong binding affinity between S-CDs and Zn 2+ effectively reconstructs the Zn 2+ solvation shell, reducing water molecule content and thereby minimizing electrode corrosion and side reactions caused by interfacial active water molecules. Moreover, the S-CDs induce the formation of stable (002) crystallographic planes that continuously renew during plating/stripping cycles, with particularly pronounced effects under high current densities, significantly enhancing the structural stability of the electrode. The synergistic effect of these dual functions leads to remarkable improvement in zinc electrode performance and ultimately endows the battery with ultra-long cycling life. Benefiting from the positive effects of the carbon dot additive, the symmetric cell achieves exceptional stability for nearly 2000 h at a high current density of 10 mA·cm -2 , far outperforming conventional electrolyte systems. Furthermore, both Zn||NH 4 V 4 O 10 and Zn||MnO 2 full cells exhibit superior electrochemical performance and significantly enhanced cycling stability, confirming the excellent compatibility of the carbon dot additive with various cathode materials. This study provides novel insights and fundamental theoretical guidance for developing high-performance AZIBs, representing a significant advancement in sustainable energy storage technologies.

Designing defect-engineered semiconductor heterojunctions can effectively promote the charge carrier separation. Herein, novel ceria (CeO 2 ) quantum dots (QDs) decorated sulfur-doped carbon nitride nanotubes (SCN NTs) were synthesized via a thermal polycondensation coupled in situ deposition-precipitation method without use of template or surfactant. The structure and morphology studies indicate that ultrafine CeO 2 QDs are well distributed inside and outside of SCN NTs offering highly dispersed active sites and a large contact interface between two components. This leads to the promoted formation of rich Ce 3+ ion and oxygen vacancies as confirmed by XPS . The photocatalytic performance can be facilely modulated by the content of CeO 2 QDs introduced in SCN matrix while bare CeO 2 does not show activity of hydrogen production . The optimal catalyst with 10% of CeO 2 loading yields a hydrogen evolution rate of 2923.8 μmol h −1 g −1 under visible light, remarkably higher than that of bare SCN and their physical mixtures. Further studies reveal that the abundant surface defects and the created 0D/1D junctions play a critical role in improving the separation and transfer of charge carriers, leading to superior solar hydrogen production and good stability.

Developing dinotefuran (DNF) sensing probe is crucial for the monitoring of DNF residues. A dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent probe of sulfur-doped carbon quantum dots (S-CQDs) and copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) hybrid (S-CQDs/CuNCs) were developed for sensitive and selective detection of DNF. The fluorescent signals of CuNCs were quenched in the presence of DNF, while the fluorescent signals of S-CQDs enhanced after the addition of DNF. The ratiometric fluorescent performance of as-developed probe was mainly based on the inner filter effect (IFE) between S-CQDs and CuNCs. Interestingly, the aggregation of CuNCs occurred after the addition of DNF, reducing the IFE effect between S-CQDs and CuNCs, leading to the fluorescent intensity of S-CQDs recovered and CuNCs fluorescence decayed. The ratiometric fluorescent performance of S-CQDs/CuNCs illustrated a good sensitivity and selectivity ranging from 10 μM and 500 μM, with a low detection limit of 7.04 μM. Importantly, real samples investigations implied the good application potential of S-CQDs/CuNCs in DNF monitoring.

The exploration of highly efficient and stable visible-light-driven photocatalysts remains a great challenge for organic pollutant management. Herein, a novel S-doped carbon nanosheet (SCN)/ZnO composite photocatalyst has been synthesized via a facile method using the freeze-drying cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the carbon precursor. The surface morphology and chemical environment of SCNs can be regulated simultaneously with S-doping. Compared to the pristine carbonized CNCs (CN), the SCN carbonized at 550 °C (SCN-550) has regular nanosheet-like morphology, integrated graphitic structures ( I D / I G of 0.692), rich surface heteroatoms (14.62 at% for O, 1.93 at% for S), and most content of oxidized-S atoms (100 at%). It endows the increased surface reactive sites (specific surface area of 45.55 m 2 g −1 ), accelerated electron transfer , enhanced visible-light absorption, and prolonged carrier lifetime for the corresponding SCN-550/ZnO composite. Consequently, the SCN-550/ZnO shows an outstanding photocatalytic performance for methylene blue (99%). In addition, SCN-550/ZnO composite exhibits general application to organic contaminants , including phenol (91%), formaldehyde (92%), acetone (79%), and methyl alcohol (84%), respectively. Furthermore, the strong interaction of Zn–O–C covalent bond between SCN-550 and ZnO ensures the high photocatalytic activity of SCN-550/ZnO composite after four cycles, demonstrating its excellent reusability and stability. This study develops a highly efficient visible-light photocatalyst of CNCs derived S-doped carbon nanosheets supported ZnO for environment purification.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most extensively used electron-transporting layers (ETLs) in organic solar cells. However, owing to numerous surface defects and mismatched energy bands with the photoactive layer, light-soaking process is usually required to achieve a high device performance for the ZnO-based cells. Herein, we reported the synthesis of N,S-doped carbon quantum dots (N,S-CQDs) by a simple hydrothermal treatment using ascorbic acid and ammonium persulfate as reagents. As characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, the synthesized CQDs were found to be 2–7 nm in dimensions, having a graphite-structured core and amorphous carbon on the shell. Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses confirmed that these CQDs are highly nitrogen- and sulfur-doped, which leads to efficient (with a quantum yield of 33%) downconversion and excitation-dependent photoluminescence character. Application of these N,S-CQDs as surface modifier for ZnO layer in inverted organic solar cells was investigated. Results indicate that the cells with N,S-CQDs-decorated ZnO ETL showed higher power conversion efficiency without S-shaped kink in the current density–voltage curves. The performance improvement and the elimination of light-soaking effect for ZnO:N,S-CQDs cells are attributed to the ZnO surface defect passivation by N,S-CQDs, as confirmed by fluorescence spectroscopy and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy. The cells with N,S-CQDs-modified ZnO ETL showed a high power conversion efficiency of 9.31%, which is higher than the reference ZnO cells. The current work provides a feasible way to achieve shell element-doped CQDs for specific application in organic electronic devices.

The poor electronical conductivity and large volume change of nano-silicon anode has seriously hindered its further application. To overcome these drawbacks, we employed the S-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (SCNTs) as the conductive additive to fabricating a scaffolded framework for the first time. The as-assembled Si anode with 5 wt% SCNTs (Si@C-5SCNTs) shows a large specific capacity of 939 mA h g −1 at 2 A g −1 within 0–1 V, significantly higher than that of Si@C (466 mA h g −1 ) and Si@C-5CNTs (720 mA h g −1 ), showing a superior rate performance. Besides, it shows higher initial coulombic efficiency, Li-ion diffusion coefficient, cycling performance, and smaller volume change than that of Si@C and Si@C-CNTs at room temperature. Even at 40 ℃, the Si@C-5SCNTs anode still show a superior rate performance (1842 and 819 mAh g −1 at 0.05 and 2 A g −1 , respectively) and cycling stability (83.6% capacity retention) than that of Si@C and Si@C-5CNTs. To better explain the significantly enhanced electrochemical performance of Si anode both room and high temperature conditions, both the chemo-mechanical coupling and internal temperature distribution models have been rational constructed, and further demonstrated that the SCNTs can effectively buffer the volume expansion and reduce the internal local temperature rise.
