Binders play a very important part in electrodes, as they closely bind active materials, conductive agents, and current collectors together. The application of binders is critical to the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries. Herein, a series of studies on sulfur cathodes with different binders is carried out. Compared to traditional polyvinylidene fluoride, γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) is rich in polar functional groups (amino and carboxyl groups), and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfide can thereby be inhibited due to the secondary bond between the functional groups and polysulfide. Furthermore, the integrity of the cathode during electrochemical processes can be maintained with a γ-PGA binder. After assembly with a Li anode, a capacity retention of 62.5% is maintained after 100 cycles, which is much higher than that of batteries with traditional binders such as polyvinylidene fluoride (53.9%), polyvinylpyrrolidone (52.8%), sodium carboxymethylcellulose (40.7%), and polyacrylonitrile (51.5%).Keywords:lithium–sulfur battery;sulfur cathode;binders;polyglutamic acid

Lithium–sulfur batteries are promising as next-generation rechargeable energy-storage devices because of their high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, sulfur cathodes suffer from low specific capacity caused by the poor electrical conductivities of the active materials and fast capacity decay resulting from polysulfide dissolution/shuttling. Herein, we report a facile and low-cost method to solve these problems using an activated carbon (AC)–NiFe 2 O 4 /S hybrid material in which NiFe 2 O 4 is uniformly distributed on AC through a simple wet impregnation method. The AC–NiFe 2 O 4 /S material not only has a strong catalytic effect on sulfur reduction, but also provides strong binding sites to trap polysulfide intermediates. An AC–NiFe 2 O 4 /S electrode shows favorable electrochemical properties including stable reversible capacity (0.24% capacity decay per cycle at 0.1 C, retaining a capacity of 602.7 mAh g −1 after 170 cycles; stable cycling at 0.5 C, retaining a capacity of 501.9 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles), excellent rate performance, and fast electrochemical reaction kinetics compared with those of a reference AC/S electrode, which are attributed to the synergistic effects between NiFe2O4 and AC.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries hold their promise in renewable next-generation energy storage technologies due to low cost and high theoretical energy. Herein, a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene-carbon nanocage-sulfur (MXene/CNC/S) cathode is synthesized by a simple process with high conductivity and outstanding performance in Li-S batteries. The cathode with an unusually high sulfur content of 80% demonstrates an eminent initial specific capacity of 1275.5 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 C and retains 823.8 mAh·g −1 after 100 cycles, showing a high retention rate of 64.6%. Besides, it exhibits a great conductive feature for rate performance, delivering 630.5 mAh·g −1 capacity when the current rises to 4 C. In this composition electrode, the excellent electrochemical performance indicates that MXene can effectively adsorb polysulfides to help batteries achieve long-term cyclic performance. On the other hand, the introduction of CNC strongly improves the specific surface area of the cathode and constructs a high conductive network to reduce the stacking of MXene, thus exhibiting better rate performance and increasing utilization of sulfur. Our work holds future technological significance as it could accelerate progress towards lithium-sulfur batteries with high sulfur content and less pricy conductive materials.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are promising candidates for large-scale high-energy-density devices owing to their potential high energy density , low cost, and more pronounced ecological compatibility. Nevertheless, their commercial applications of Li–S batteries are limited by the low electrical conductivity of sulfur, huge volume swell, shuttle effect, and slow redox reactions . In order to solve the above issues, various sulfur hosts have been developed and combined with active sulfur to form a composite. Polyaniline-coated cobalt nitride nanoflowers loaded with sulfur (CoN/S@PANI nanoflowers) were prepared by simple liquid phase precipitation followed by nitridation, sulfurization, and coating with polypyrrole . The CoN nanoflowers possessed a hierarchical nanostructure with a large specific surface area, which could reduce the volume swelling of sulfur and the shuttle effect of polysulfides . The polyaniline coating with high electrical conductivity can adsorb the polysulfides and promote the electrochemical reaction kinetics. Therefore, the CoN/S@PANI nanoflowers exhibit a high initial capacity of 895 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , which was kept at 736 mAh g −1 over 100 cycles. This paper reports a new route to prepare a sulfur host for advanced lithium–sulfur batteries.

Rechargeable lithium-metal batteries have gained significant attention as potential candidates of energy storage systems; however, severe safety issues including flammable electrolyte and dendritic lithium formation hinder their further practical application. In this work, we develop a novel intrinsic flame-retardant electrolyte, which enables a stable and dendrite-free cycling with lithium plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency of up to 99.1% over 500 cycles. Raman spectra indicate that no free molecular solvent exists, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the LiF-rich interphase on the Li-metal anode. When coupled with sulfurized pyrolyzed poly(acrylonitrile) cathode, it shows a benign electrochemical reversibility with the areal capacity of up to 3.41 mAh cm–2 after 70 cycles. To further check its compatibility with sulfur cathode, a higher sulfur content (51.6%) is examined with the areal capacity of 3.92 mAh cm–2 and sulfur utilization of 81.7%. This work provides an alternative for safe and high-performance Li–S batteries via a novel electrolyte strategy.

A carbon matrix with an appropriate porous structure plays a vital role in developing high-performance sulfur/carbon cathodes of lithium–sulfur batteries. In this work, a hierarchical porous carbon fiber (HPCF) with a few mesopores and abundant micropores was prepared via electrospinning with a SiO2 template and subsequent KOH activation. The HPCF with an ultra-high surface area and a large pore volume can construct a loose network structure to promise high sulfur utilization and sufficient sulfur loading. Mesopores can provide pathways for the infiltration of electrolyte to ensure fast transport of lithium ions during electrochemical reactions, whereas micropores can effectively suppress the diffusion of polysulfides by their strong adsorption capability. Due to such advantages, the proposed cathode, with 66 wt% sulfur content, can yield a high reversible capacity of 1070.6 mA h g−1 at 0.5C, and a stable cycle performance with a capacity retention of 88.4% after 100 cycles.

Conductive supports could improve the electrical conductivity of the electrode in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries but suffer from the shuttle effect originated from the polysulfide dissolution, while the hydrophilic metal oxides could avoid the shuttle effect but with poor conductivity. Herein, a facile approach was developed to fabricate hierarchically porous tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticle-anchored tubular polypyrrole (T-PPy) as a sulfur host, in order to integrate the advantages of conductive supports and metal oxides but overcome their shortcomings. In the unique structure, the T-PPy nanotubes acted as a conductive network to not only improve the electrical conductivity of cathodes but also accommodate the volume expansion of the sulfur cathode during cycling as well as relatively confine the polysulfide diffusion, while the SnO2 nanoparticles served as a high-efficient polysulfide trap to mitigate the shuttle effect due to the chemical bond between SnO2 and polysulfides. Moreover, the hierarchically porous structure and therefore large surface area of the proposed S/(T-PPy)@SnO2 cathode were favorable for the accommodation of sulfur and lithium sulfides. Consequently, S/(T-PPy)@SnO2 with 64.7% sulfur mass content exhibited excellent cyclic stability with a decay rate of only 0.05% per cycle along with 500 cycles at 1 C, rate capability of 383.7 mA h/g at 5 C, and Coulombic efficiency above 90%, outstanding among most of the reported PPy-based sulfur cathodes and PPy-based ternary sulfur cathodes.

Lithium–sulfur battery is one of the most promising choices for next-generation batteries due to its high theoretical energy density and natural abundance. However, the sulfur cathode undergoes a stepwise reduction process and generates multiple soluble polysulfide intermediates; for the further conversion from the dissolved intermediates to the final solid product (Li2S), the surface nucleation barrier limits the speed of the electrochemical precipitation, resulting in serious polysulfide diffusion loss and low sulfur utilization. Herein, the trace Li2S (tLi2S) is modified on the carbon fiber (CF) skeleton as preloaded crystal nuclei to boost the electrokinetics of Li2S deposition in the initial cycle. The trace Li2S decreases the nucleation barrier on the modified electrode (tLi2S@CF), resulting in a high initial capacity of 1423 mAh g–1 for the Li2S6 catholyte (0.2 C), which corresponds to a nearly 100% utilization of Li2S6. Furthermore, the trace Li2S nuclei induce a uniform distribution of the redeposited active materials, and the uniform distribution persists in the following cycles, which benefits the cycle life significantly. The sulfur cathode based on the tLi2S@CF matrix maintains a capacity of 1106 mAh g–1 at 1 C rate after 100 cycles. The strategy can provide a new avenue for the rational design of the sulfur cathode.

Herein, we report a three-dimensionally (3D) ordered macro-/mesoporous carbon (3DOM-mC) as a sulfur supporter for rechargeable lithium/sulfur (Li/S) batteries. The 3DOM-mC is prepared by a dual-templating method via using silica crystal as hard template, triblock copolymer EO 20 PO 70 EO 20 as soft template and resol (phenol/formaldehyde) as the carbon source. The as-synthesized 3DOM-mC possesses a large BET surface area of 818.5 m 2 g −1 , ordered interconnected macropores and ordered mesopores on the macropore walls. The 3DOM-mC is then composited with sulfur to obtain the sulfur/3DOM-mC (S/3DOM-mC) hybrids by a simple solvothermal synthesis process. In Li/S batteries, the S/3DOM-mC composite shows a high initial discharge capacity of 1042 mAh g −1 , with 703 mAh g −1 remaining after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. Furthermore, at a high rate of 2.5 C, it can still deliver a high capacity of 357 mAh g −1 , with a capacity recuperability of 85% as the current back to 0.5 C. The great electrochemical performance is attributed to its unique hierarchical structure with 3D ordered interconnected macropores that can provide the rapid mass transport and ordered mesopores that can trap polysulfides via physisorption.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are of great importance as promising electrochemical-energy storage systems in view of their overwhelming advantage of energy density . However, their commercial applications are still far away mainly due to fast capacity decay in a high sulfur content caused by low utilization of active material and severe polysulfide dissolution during electrochemical cycling. Here we have designed and prepared uniform α-Ni(OH) 2 hollow spheres constructed from ultrathin nanosheets with the thickness of ~3.5 nm as a hollow sulfur nanosphere host for Li-S batteries. Specifically, the synthesized hierarchical hollow spheres not only manifest the advantages of hollow structure and robust protective shell to encapsulate a very high content of sulfur up to 81 wt%, but also offer sufficient functionalized surfaces to directly bond and entrap polysulfides in hollow sphere. When used as cathode materials for Li-S batteries, the S@Ni(OH) 2 double-shell hollow hybrids exhibit a highly stable cycle life over 1000 cycles at 1 C with a very small capacity decay rate of only ~0.04% per cycle.

Promising applications of lithium–sulfur batteries with high theoretical capacity are still severely limited due to the poor conductivity of sulfur, the polysulfide shuttle effect and volume expansion. Herein, low-cost and carbon/nitrogen-rich waste honeycombs are used to prepare in situ N-doped hierarchical porous carbon (INHPC) and firstly applied as a sulfur host by facile high-temperature carbonization combined with KHCO3 activation. The influence of mass ratios of the activator to honeycomb on the morphology and pore structure of the as-prepared carbon materials was investigated in detail. Among them, the optimized INHPC with a mass ratio of 4 : 1 presents block-like morphology with interconnected pore structure, while showing a high specific surface area of 1683.6 m2 g−1 and a large pore volume of 0.974 cm3 g−1. Moreover, the in situ N-doped carbon materials not only have good electronic conductivity but also strong chemical adsorption with polysulfide intermediates, hence effectively alleviating the shuttle effect. When used as the sulfur host, the as-obtained INHPC-4/S composite cathode with a sulfur content of 60 wt% delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 913.4 mA h g−1 and retains a reversible capacity of 538.3 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 C. Even at a current rate of 1 C, the first discharge capacity of 623.2 mA h g−1 can be obtained, simultaneously achieving the durable cycle life up to 500 cycles. These good electrochemical performances are ascribed to physicochemical synergistic adsorption of in situ N-doping and hierarchical porous structure as well as high ionic/electronic conductivity.

The major challenge of lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) is the ‘‘shuttle effect’’ of polysulfides. Herein, nickel hydroxide@graphene (Ni(OH)2@GR) is synthesized as a sulfur carrier by a simple refluxing method to efficiently confine sulfur for highly stable LSBs. The two-dimensional (2D) vertical arrays of Ni(OH)2 with extensive hydrophilic hydroxyl groups endow the cathode with powerful restriction and strong chemisorption ability of polysulfides. Besides, the typical 2D GR sheets provide a stable barrier for polysulfides and further accelerate the electron/ion migration transmission. Based on the Ni(OH)2@GR sheet-to-sheet heterostructure, the electrodes achieve 72% sulfur loading and exhibit outstanding long-term cycling stability with a decay rate of only 0.002% per cycle at 1C for 500 cycles. This work offers a promising method to reasonably design 2D materials for sulfur host and lithium metal protection.
