BACKGROUND Biosynthesis of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) utilizing renewable materials and nontoxic chemicals has become highly desirable and is currently receiving tremendous attention. In this study, a facile and cellulose-based approach was developed to biosynthesize AgNPs through tandem hydrolysis of silver sulfate and cellulose under hydrothermal conditions. RESULTS Well-defined AgNPs of about 72.0 nm in size were biosynthesized with 0.30 g of cellulose at 200°C for 10 h. The particle sizes of the as-synthesized AgNPs were positively affected by the reaction temperature and time, but on the contrary were negatively affected by the amount of cellulose employed. The results from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the cellulose-hydrolyzed products (saccharides or aldehydes) were accountable for the bioreduction of the Ag ions, and the C = O (C–O) groups in the aldehydes or saccharides played critical roles in capping the AgNPs. Additionally, in the presence of the as-synthesized AgNPs, enhanced surface fluorescence of methyl orange was achieved. CONCLUSION A biological and maneuverable strategy was successfully developed for the synthesis of AgNPs by a hydrothermal route through tandem hydrolysis of silver sulfate and cellulose. Thus, this environmentally friendly method is anticipated to be utilized for the biosynthesis of AgNPs and opens up avenues to prepare other metal nanoparticles from metal sulfates. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry

Electrically-powered synthesis provides a sustainable approach for propylene oxidation to propylene oxide and propylene glycol in aqueous medium using water as the oxygen source, which can substitute conventional energy-intensive process that relies on hazardous oxidants. However, current electrosynthesis is suffering from expensive catalysts, low current density and Faradaic efficiency. Herein, guided by accidental finding of Ag + showing activity for propylene electrooxidation to propylene glycol and following mechanistic understanding, we report 1,2,3-triazole-chelated Ag catalyst with improved current density (15.8 mA/cm 2 ) and Faradaic efficiency (62.5%), comparable with heterogeneous Pt and Pd catalysts using 30-fold less expensive metal. We experimentally and theoretically demonstrate that triazole coordination modulates the oxidative ability of the in-situ formed Ag-oxo species, suppressing overoxidation and oxygen evolution. Furthermore, by employing a high-pressure electrolyzer, we strengthen propylene mass transfer and attain an enhanced current density of 61.1 mA/cm 2 with Faradaic efficiency of 73.4%. By circulating electro-deposition/dissolution of Ag, the catalyst shows reusability in 10 cycles. This work demonstrates the potential of using cost-effective homogeneous catalyst for propylene electrooxidation.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reactions (ECO 2 RR) for ethanol synthesis represents a highly valuable yet challenging objective, mainly due to the low selectivity and elusive formation mechanism. This study aims to address this challenge by designing a pulsed-electrodeposited bimetallic CuAg catalyst. The surface morphology and elemental valence state distribution of the CuAg catalyst were comprehensively characterized using BET/SEM/EDS/XRD/XPS techniques. Subsequently, the electrocatalytic performance was systematically investigated based on CV/LSV/EIS/GC/ 1 H NMR methods. The results indicated that the CuAg catalyst attained a Faradaic efficiency of 11.39 % for ethanol production at a current density of 84 mA·cm −2 , along with an ethanol/ethylene selectivity of 8.26. In combination with the analysis of DFT calculations, the incorporation of Ag into the Cu catalyst enhanced the catalytic performance primarily through three mechanisms: increasing the specific surface area and porosity to generate more Cu active sites and high ESCA , modifying the electronic structure of Cu atoms to facilitate the C–C coupling pathway, and reducing the interfacial resistance to promote reaction kinetic rates. These findings provide atomic-level insights into the ECO 2 RR mechanism and establish a novel paradigm for the design of bimetallic catalysts to achieve the efficient synthesis of multi-carbon fuels such as ethanol.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are viewed as competitive candidates for high-energy-density storage. However, the performance of AZIBs is impeded by dendrite growth and side reactions on the zinc anode surface. Herein, a facile in situ galvanic replacement strategy assisted by ammonium persulfate (APS)-assisted surface etching is proposed to construct a zincophilic Ag-modified interface on Zn metal, enabling dynamic regulation of Zn 2+ nucleation and deposition behavior. As a result, the Zn@Ag anode exhibits a significantly reduced Zn 2+ nucleation energy barrier (from 47.2 to 31.2 kJ mol −1 ), enabling uniform and dense Zn deposition while effectively suppressing dendrite formation and interfacial side reactions. Meanwhile, COMSOL simulations based on the finite element method verified the key role of the Ag-modified interface in suppressing dendrite formation and mitigating interfacial corrosion. At current densities of 1 mAh cm −2 , a symmetric cell with the Zn@Ag interfacial layer as the anode achieved a cycle life of 1757 h (39 times that of bare Zn). Moreover, the Zn@Ag || V 2 O 5 full cell has a cycle stability of over 2800 cycles. This method provides a new strategy for the design of anodes in AZIBs.

To tackle the escalating problems of organic wastewater pollution and CO 2 emissions, we have developed a long-term operational electrocatalytic device for the one-pot electrochemical conversion of organic pollutants (using C 3 H 8 O 3 as a model compound) into liquid fuels. Commercial Pt/Ti and Sn served as the anode and cathode, respectively, with current density adjusted by varying the anolyte salt concentration. Experimental results show that the CO 2 proportion in the anode gas is low (<7 %), creating a “CO₂-depleted environment (2.6–6.6 % v/v )” in the cathode chamber. Surprisingly, formate can also be produced and the Carbon Utilization Efficiency (CUE) exceeds 80 %, despite the Faraday efficiency for formate (FE HCOO - ) consistently remaining below 2 % due to insufficient CO 2 supply from organic wastewater oxidation. While increased current density can boost CO 2 production, it concurrently exacerbates OH- accumulation, leading to a decrease in CUE, which necessitates finding an optimal balance between the two factors. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that increased CO 2 production in a “CO 2 -depleted” environment effectively enhances CO 2 adsorption energy on Sn and increases the reaction current density. This work reveals that the critical factor in enhancing FE HCOO - is identifying the optimal balance between anode CO₂ generation and cathode CO₂ utilization by adjusting current density, thus offering theoretical insights for targeted electrode fabrication and operational parameter optimization.

Silver is the most difficult non-copper impurity element to be purified and removed during the preparation of high-purity copper products by electrolysis. This is primarily due to the unpredictable behavior of trace amounts of silver during electrolysis. As a result, current methods for reducing silver content in cathode copper are limited and often ineffective, with silver levels remaining above 8 ppm. This work examines the cathodic behavior of Ag + during copper electrolysis using thermodynamic and kinetic theoretical calculations, variable experiments, and a detailed analysis of the trace Ag phase in copper cathode. Experimental findings indicate that the concentration of Ag + in the electrolyte is the primary determinant of silver content in cathode copper, specifically, the silver content in copper cathode rises dramatically with increasing the concentration of Ag + in the electrolyte. Under the condition of current density 300 A/m 2 , T = 63 °C, Ag + concentration of 0.01 mg L −1 , the silver content in copper cathode diminishes by 81.43 pct from 8.51 to 1.41 ppm. Combining electrochemical tests (cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry) with scanning electron microscopy, an intriguing revelation has emerged. Following electromigration, diffusion, desolvation, and electroreduction, the silver most likely embeds into the copper deposition layer with the occurrence state of Cu 9 Ag solid solution alloy, rather than the traditional belief that silver exists as an independent silver element. This study contributes to a fundamental understanding of the underlying causes of the difficulty in removing silver from copper cathode, and provides inspiration for the development of new methods to improve the purity of electrolytic copper and to reduce the silver lost therein. Conventional silver powder production routes, which reduce silver nitrate solution in the presence of a polymer protective agent, complicate subsequent powder cleaning and wastewater treatment. This study proposes a sulfate-based inorganic protective agent (utilizing Ag 2 SO 4 precursor replacement) that serves dual functions: morphology stabilization and wastewater treatment simplification. This innovation enables the environmentally friendly preparation of sub-micron spherical silver powder. The effects of peristaltic pump flow rate, pH value, temperature, concentration ratio of oxidant to reducing agent on the particle size and morphology of silver powder were systematically investigated. The resulting silver powder exhibited an average particle size of 0.64 ± 0.05 μm and excellent thermal stability (weight loss rate < 0.50 % up to 1000 °C). Mechanistic analysis via combined XRD, Zeta potential measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that SO 4 2− preferentially adsorbs on Ag(111) facet via chemisorption. Moreover, the production wastewater can be directly treated biochemically after calcium oxide precipitation and air-stripping treatment. Furthermore, the scale-up experiment (single yield 50.0 g) showed that the performance of the experimental product was consistent with the lab-scale results, indicating that the process has good reproducibility.

In this study, a heterogeneous Fenton-like system was developed based on Fe 2 V 4 O 13 composite oxide material with the aim of decomposing some hazardous organic compounds present in industrial wastewater (e.g., methylene blue, ciprofloxacin). The research results have shown that this composite oxide material was synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method with controlled conditions optimized for hydrothermal temperature and structure aging temperature. Characterization methods indicated that the optimal hydrothermal condition was at 180 °C for 12 h, and the structure aging temperature was at 80 °C for 12 h. Under these synthesis and structure aging conditions, a characteristic nano-rod structure of the material with dimensions of 500 × 40 × 20 nm (in length × width × height) was formed. This structure exhibited the best catalytic activity for organic compound decomposition compared to other material structures synthesized under different conditions in this study. The catalytic activity in decomposing of methylene blue and ciprofloxacin was high, reaching > 99% and > 77%, respectively, after 14 min. This was achieved following the Fenton system mechanism in the presence of H 2 O 2 at pH 7 and 9. The mechanism followed the mixed homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton process, in which the presence of leached vanadium ions accelerated the ≡Fe 2+ /≡Fe 3+ redox couple regeneration, consequently enhancing the degradation efficiency. In the mechanism, the formation of the highly active free radicals •OH and •OOH is observed and demonstrated by using specific competitive inhibitors (quinhydrone, ascorbic acid). These findings suggest the potential of the Fe 2 V 4 O 13 -based nanomaterial for the efficient treatment of organic compounds in wastewater, particularly under neutral to alkaline media. Graphical

Electrochemical selective dechlorination for the synthesis of high value-added chemical products is an economical and promising technology. Although silver (Ag) electrode is the most representative catalyst in most electrocatalytic dehalogenation reactions, the selectivity for specific reaction needs to be improved. In this framework, AgCu bimetallic electrocatalysts were designed for the selective dechlorination of 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropyridine carboxylic acid (4-N-3,5,6-TCP) to 4-amino-3,6-dichloropyridolinic acid (4-N-3,6-DCP). The optimum Ag 16 Cu 4 electrode exhibits excellent performance with 99.0% selectivity and 98.8% yield of 4-N-3,6-DCP, surpassing the pure Ag electrode. The combined results of experimental measurements and theoretical calculations indicated that the introduction of Cu modulates the electronic structure of Ag, which not only promoted the transfer of charges, but also reduces the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (the C H formation). In addition, the practicality and scalability of this system was evaluated using a flow-cell reactor. This study demonstrates that AgCu bimetallic catalyst plays a crucial role in determining the selectivity and activity in the electrochemical dechlorination of 4-N-3,5,6-TCP and displays the prospective applications.

The heterogeneous electro-Fenton technology can settle a matter of narrow pH application range in the traditional electro-Fenton process. Direct O 2 electro-reduction to •OH on the surface of metal-free catalysts can effectively solve the problem of easy leaching of metal-based catalysts under acidic conditions and improve the oxidation efficiency of H 2 O 2 . In this work, a stable bifunctional boron-nitrogen-containing catalyst was directly synthesized on the surface of graphite felt. The H 2 O 2 yield (4.32 mg cm -2 h −1 ) and rhodamine B degradation rate (0.174 min −1 ) of boron-nitrogen-containing catalyst were significantly improved at the pH value of 7, compared with nitrogen-containing graphite felt catalyst. The catalyst had a rapid degradation ability for various dyes and actual dye wastewater, and the specific energy consumption of actual dye wastewater degradation was 4.02 kW h kg −1 COD -1 lower than that reported in literature (6.38–29.7 kW h kg −1 COD -1 ). DFT calculations and XPS results revealed the potential reaction mechanism. The introduction of −BCO 2 group into the nitrogen-containing plane significantly enhanced the oxygen adsorption and oxygen reduction activity, and the directly formation of •OH was promoted jointly by graphite nitrogen and −BCO 2 group. This work provided a new insight into the development of metal-free electro-Fenton catalyst.

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO 3 - ) to ammonium (NH 4 + ) is an environment friendly approach for treating nitrogen-containing wastewater. Consequently, electrocatalysts capable of effectively and selectively reducing NO 3 - to NH 4 + receives growing attention. However, Cu-based catalysts demonstrate limited efficiency and the drawback of generating toxic NO 2 - though it is prevalent in the field of electrocatalytic reduction of NO 3 - (NO 3 RR). In this work, a CuNi alloy was synthesized on a Co foil through electrodeposition (marked as CuNi@Co) and its electrocatalytic performance for NO 3 RR was evaluated. XRD, EDS mapping and XPS characterization indicate CuNi exists with alloy state. Electrocatalytic experiments demonstrate that CuNi@Co exhibits an exceptional FE NH3 of 99.12% at -0.64 V (vs. RHE). Importantly, no detrimental NO 2 - generated during NO 3 RR process because the reduction rate from NO 2 - to NH 4 + is faster than that from NO 3 - to NO 2 - . Mechanistic analysis suggests that Cu serves as a ‘reservoir’ to provide electrons to facilitate the reduction of NO 3 - to NO 2 - during NO 3 RR process and the synergistic effect of Ni and Cu promotes more active hydrogen (H*) to participate the reduction process of NO 2 - to NH 4 + not H 2 generation, ultimately improving FE NH3 . This work elucidates the role of electrons and H* in electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonium for CuNi alloy, providing new insights into the reduction process of NO 3 RR for Cu-based materials.
