Strontium chondroitin sulfate/silk fibroin blend membrane containing microporous structure modulates macrophage responses for guided bone regeneration

Ma Fenbo,Xia Xingyu,Tang Bin

A membrane used for guided bone regeneration (GBR) serves as a bioactive compartment rather than a physical barrier. However, the pure membrane may not provide an optimal microenvironment for bone formation and remodeling. Here, a novel strontium chondroitin sulfate/silk fibroin (SrCS/SF) blend membrane containing microporous structure was fabricated. By increasing incorporation content of SrCS, SrCS/SF membranes exhibit better mechanical properties and higher water retention capacity. In vitro results reveal that higher content of SrCS membranes facilitate osteoblasts proliferation. The evaluation of the osteoimmunomodulatory effects of the membranes reveals that SrCS/SF membranes should have positive effects on modulating the osteoimmune response of macrophages, by downregulating the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the expression of degradation related catabolic genes and upregulating osteogenic factors. It is therefore believed that the developed SrCS/SF membranes should be potentially used as multifunctional bioactive GBR membranes.

Exploring Early Carbonation Properties of Sr4Al6O12SO4 Compound for a Sustainable Alternative to Cement Clinker

Jaures Syntyche Ndzila,Zhengxian Yang,Jiankun Xu

Sr4Al6O12SO4 is a compound that can be used as a sustainable alternative to cement clinker for producing low-carbon precast concrete products. In this study, we examine the impact of CO2 curing on early carbonation properties of Sr4Al6O12SO4. The findings indicate that the carbonation potential of Sr4Al6O12SO4 is substantial for use in CO2 sequestration within the construction sector. The carbonation strength and CO2 uptake of the concrete blocks exhibit a positive correlation with extended carbonation duration, achieving a maximum compressive strength of 63 MPa after 48 h of carbonation. Compared with 2 h, the beneficial strength gain at 24 and 48 h is 39.57% and 70.73%, respectively. This strength gain is mainly due to the formation of rich carbonation products and the reduction of porosity and average pore size within the paste matrix. Furthermore, due to its high degree of crystallinity, SrCO3 is identified as the primary crystalline carbonation product, characterized by large micrometer-sized subrounded grain aggregates. The continued formation of SrCO3 encapsulates unreacted species covered by wet gel layers, leading to a thick microstructure that significantly enhances mechanical strength. This study presents a promising way for employing CO2 curing to produce eco-friendly Sr4Al6O12SO4-based construction materials.

Microwave sintering for rapid treatment of simulated Nd3+ and Sr2+ radioactive contaminated soil: exploring the influence of Nd:Sr mass ratio and mechanism

Mao Xueli,Xu Hechao,Liao Xin,Bu Fankang,Tang Jinrong,Yi Facheng

This study achieves the successful immobilization of simulated alpha- and beta-emitting radionuclides (Nd 3+ and Sr 2+ , respectively) by incorporating them into a glass matrix through Nd 2 O 3 /SrSO 4 (Nd/Sr). Varying mixture concentrations (5–30 wt% with mass ratios Nd:Sr varied from 10:1 to 1:10) in simulated radioactive soils were subjected to microwave sintering at 1500 °C for 0.5 h. Comprehensive assessments, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), confirm the vitrification process’s efficacy. The vitrified sample exhibits an amorphous structure, smooth surface, and homogeneously distributed elements, highlighting microwave sintering as a promising method for the effective disposal of radioactive-contaminated soil. Flash sintering glass–ceramic treatment of Sr-contaminated soil waste

Guilin Wei,Xiaoyan Shu,Jiahong Wang,Shibing Zuo,Kuan Wu,Guoliang Zhao,Fen Luo,Wenhong Han,Chen Xu,Xirui Lu

Effective disposal of radioactive waste is crucial for safe development of nuclear energy. In this study, flash sintering technology is used for the first time to quickly solidify simulated Sr-contaminated soil waste. The waste can be converted into a glass–ceramic phase by heating the waste at 1100 °C for 1 min during flash sintering. The phase evolution during flash sintering as a function of density and amorphous fraction was systematically investigated. Additionally, the microstructural evolution of the matrices and the leaching behavior of simulated waste elements (e.g., Sr) were evaluated. This study explores the feasibility of using flash sintering for treating radioactive contamination waste.

Comparison of physicochemical and biological properties of calcium phosphate cements incorporating different strontium-containing compounds

Xinyuan Yuan,Tingting Wu,Teliang Lu,Jiandong Ye

Strontium (Sr) modified biomaterials are testified to be beneficial for bone regeneration. The form of Sr incorporated in calcium phosphate cement (CPC) plays a vital role in the ion release behavior and osteogenesis of cement. In this study, four kinds of Sr-containing compounds, SrCO 3 (SrC), SrHPO 4 (SrP), SrSiO 3 (SrSi) and SrSO 4 (SrS) were incorporated into CPC, respectively. The effects on the physicochemical and biological properties of Sr-CPCs were comparatively investigated. The results showed that all Sr-containing compounds shortened the setting time and increased the injectability of CPC. The phases of CPC changed a little and the hydrated crystals became thinner. All CPCs modified by Sr compounds could release Sr in a long-term behavior. Moreover, all Sr compounds significantly promoted the adhesion and proliferation behaviors of mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs) on the surface of CPC. Compared to CPC alone, cells cultured on CPC containing SrC and SrSi exhibited higher expression levels of osteogenic genes, including ALP, Runx2, OCN, OPN, Col-I, and BSP, than those on the other two CPCs containing Sr compounds. In addition, SrSi/CPC showed higher ALP activity. In summary, CPCs incorporated with SrCO 3 and SrSiO 3 demonstrated enhanced osteogenic performance. This finding is expected to provide a theoretical foundation and practical guideline for the development of Sr-modified calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) with optimized setting time, improved injectability, and enhanced osteogenic performance.

Rapid vitrification of simulated Sr2+ radioactive contaminated soil for nuclear emergencies

Chen Shunzhang,Shu Xiaoyan,Luo Fen,Dong Hao,Xu Chen,Li Bingsheng,Shao Dadong,Lu Xirui

To efficiently inhibit the diffusion of radioactive nuclides in soil that were left by nuclear emergency accidents, microwave sintering technology was used in this work to vitrify the simulated strontium contaminated soil. Four kinds of simulated strontium-contaminated soil could be successfully vitrified almost completely within 30 min without any additional components. Sr 2+ cations are immobilized into aluminosilicate glass network structure. In addition, the solubility of SrSO 4 in different soil is related to the element contents of aluminum and silicon. This work reveals a demonstration that beta-radioactive contaminated soil could be treated by microwave vitrifying.

Study on the hydration properties of two polymorphs of Sr4Al6SO16

Jaures Syntyche Ndzila,Zhengmao Ye,Guojian Jing,Xiaolei Lu,Jiaming Wu,Jinpu Zhang,Shuxian Wang,Xin Cheng

Sr 4 Al 6 SO 16 is a kind of anhydrous sulfoaluminate that belongs to the sodalite family. In this paper, we demonstrate the effect of Fe 3+ ions addition on the hydration properties of two polymorphs of Sr 4 Al 6 SO 16 (namely pure orthorhombic and cubic). In solid-state reaction of orthorhombic Sr 4 Al 6 SO 16 , excessive 5 wt% SrSO 4 was used to compensate for the loss of sulfur. Results indicate that the hydration rate of cubic phase is faster than that of orthorhombic phase at early stage, but the heat release of the latter is more concentrated. The reason why the cubic phase has a faster earlier hydration kinetics may be due to the incorporation of Fe 3+ ions and the formation of SrFe 12 O 19 impurity phase, which introduce the defects in the structure, activate the crystal lattice , and increase the hydration activity. Both polymorphs react with water to form the reaction products first, and then no crystalline phase hydration product was precipitated after 72 h. In contrary to the XRD , amorphous AH 3 was clearly detected in TGA analysis in hydrated samples, probably due to poor crystallinity which cannot be detected by XRD. In addition, both polymorphs contain a lot of impurity phases, and their amounts are calculated using the Rietveld refinement method. Moreover, the addition of Fe 3+ ions is not only beneficial to adjust the cubic phase content, but also facilitates the relative particle growth. This work provides a useful platform for employing the Fe 3+ ions to regulate the hydration properties of Sr 4 Al 6 SO 16 .
