Achieving ultrafast resilience comparable to that of irreversible cross-linking elastomers remains a formidable challenge for self-healing supramolecular elastomers. Herein, we construct a π-type tweezer structure formed by imidazolidinylurea and aromatic imine to stabilize dynamical hard domains (SDHDs) in polyurethane (PU) elastomers. SDHDs endow the dynamic PU network with high binding energy and minimal stress relaxation at room temperature, similar to irreversible covalent cross-links. As such, the elastomer demonstrates rapid resilience comparable to vulcanized natural rubber as well as high mechanical strength and toughness. Meanwhile, SDHDs can be readily activated upon heating, enabling exceptional healing ability (∼100% healing efficiency) under mild conditions (50 °C) and complete recovery of mechanical properties after recycling. More interestingly, the PU elastomer exhibits significant elastocaloric effects with an adiabatic temperature change of −13.5 °C, surpassing that of state-of-the-art vulcanized natural rubber (−9.4 °C). Therefore, this work presents a new approach for structural design that enables a balance between conflicting characteristics and expands the potential applications of self-healing supramolecular elastomers.

Polymeric materials that simultaneously possess excellent mechanical properties and high self-healing ability at room temperature, convenient healing, and facile fabrication are always a huge challenge. Herein, we report on surface-energy-driven self-healing energetic linear polyurethane elastomers (EPU) that were facilely fabricated by two-step methods to acquire high healing efficiency and mechanical properties. By constructing surface energy and dynamic hard domains, energetic linear polyurethane elastomers not only obtained high healing ability and mechanical properties at high or room temperature but also avoid the use of some assisted healing conditions and complex chemical structure design and decrease manufacturing difficulty. Based on the interfacial healing physical model, various trends of surface tension, radius, and depth of the crack bottom were calculated to analyze the healing mechanism. We propose that polyurethane elastomers with low junction density could generate excess surface energy resulting from damage and drive self-healing, and incorporating a small amount of disulfide bonds increases the slightly packed hard phase and decreases the healing energy barrier. This work may offer a novel strategy for improving mechanical tensile and healing ability in the field of self-healing material application.

For probing the structure–property relationships of the polyurea elastomers, we synthesize the siloxane polyurea copolymer elastomer by using two aminopropyl-terminated polysiloxane monomers with low and high number-average molecular weight (Mn), i.e., L-30D and H-130D. To study the influence of the copolymer structures on the film properties, these films are analyzed to obtain the tensile performance, UV-vis spectra, cross-sectional topographies, and glass transition temperature (Tg). The two synthetic thermoplastic elastomer films are characterized by transparency, ductility, and the Tgof the hard domains, depending on the reacting compositions. Furthermore, the film elasticity behavior is studied by the strain recovery and cyclic tensile test, and then, the linear fitting of the tensile data is used to describe the film elasticity based on the Mooney–Rivlin model. Moreover, the temperature-dependent infrared (IR) spectra during heating and cooling are conducted to study the strength and recovery rate of the hydrogen bonding, respectively, and their influence on the film performance is further analyzed; the calculatedMnof the hard segment chains is correlated to the macroscopic recovery rate of the hydrogen bonding. These results can add deep insight to the structure–property relationships of the siloxane polyurea copolymer.

The instability of zinc metal anode caused by zinc dendrite growth and severe parasitic reactions has significantly restricted the extensive application of rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (RAZBs). Herein, based on the strategy of dynamic hard domains, we develop an ion-conductive supramolecular elastomer consisting of Zn salts and the polyurethane-urea-polypropylene glycol polymer skeleton. This elastomer combines high mechanical strength, high ionic conductivity, decent hydrophobicity, and high adhesion to stabilize the electrode–electrolyte interface. In the elastomer system, this elastomer can dynamically adapt to the volume changes of Zn anodes during repeated zinc plating/stripping processes through the reversible dissociation/reassociation of hierarchical hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) formed by the polar groups of urea and urethane moieties. Meanwhile, the coordination of Zn2+ with soft polypropylene glycol (PPG) segments contributes to fast ion transport. This hydrophobic elastomer can also effectively inhibit water-induced corrosion by shielding the active Zn metal from the aqueous electrolyte. Based on the above synergies, the surface-modified anode shows excellent cycling stability above 550 h at a high current density of 5 mA cm–2 and a capacity of 2.5 mAh cm–2. Moreover, the assembled Zn//MnO2 full cell also displayed an enhanced electrochemical performance. This work provides inspiration for the design of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers in aqueous battery chemistry to accelerate the application of RAZBs.

Integration of self-healing ability and biomimetic structures into epidermal electronics is of great interest. Herein, mimicking the merits of human skin, dynamic hard domains and multidimensional conductive fillers were introduced into epidermal electronics. Firstly, aromatic disulfide bonds and H-bonds as dynamic hard domains from bis-(4-aminophenyl) disulfide and tetraethylene glycol were incorporated into polyurethane-urea (PU), and provided desired mechanical properties and self-healing capability. To enhance the strength and toughness, ZIF-67 nanoparticles with micro-pores and uncoordinated imidazole groups were introduced into PU matrix, producing excellent filler-matrix interfaces owing to the formation of high-density H-bonds and mechanical insertion. The optimized PU/ZIF-67 10% composite exhibited high performance with a tensile strength of 4.15 MPa, an elongation at break of 1342.31 %, a toughness of 40.73 MJ m −3 , a fracture energy of 157.75 kJ m −2 , and healing efficiency of 93.25 %. Benefiting from the supramolecular PU with dynamic hard domains and multidimensional conductive fillers, the as-prepared multifunctional films exhibited excellent self-healing ability and sensing performance with a wide detection range (609 %), high sensitivity (3416.71), fast response time (65 ms), low detection limit (0.026 %), and excellent robustness (∼1000 cycles at 50 % strain). Different human motions and high-quality electrophysiological signals were successfully detected by the original and healable epidermal electrodes.

In this work, we investigated the microphase separation, mechanical, and dynamic mechanical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs) with one-soft segment (polypropylene glycol, PPG, or hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene, HTPB) or bi-soft segment (PPG and HTPB) using FTIR, XRD, SAXS and amplitude modulated-frequency modulated viscoelastic mode of AFM (AM-FM mode AFM) methods. The results showed that the microphase separation process of hard and soft segments (HS and SS) in TPU containing PPG and HTPB soft segments (PPG-HTPB-PU) was restricted by randomly alternated bi-soft segments, which results in formation of a low content of irregular-shaped hard domain (HD). In addition, the microphase separation of PPG-HTPB-PU induced a triple-phased structure of HD, HTPB rich phase and mesophase. The mesophase of PPG-HTPB-PU was formed of HS, PPG and HTPB segments which were excluded out of HD and HPTB rich domains during microphase separation process. The damping temperature range (at tan δ greater than 0.3) of PPG-HTPB-PU was from −14.6 to 32.1°C (46.5°C) which was more broad than that of TPU containing HTPB soft segment (HTPB-PU). The broad damping temperature range of PPG-HTPB-PU is mainly attributed to the enhanced energy consumption caused by the frictional motions of mixed segments of mesophase.
