The prevailing strategy to enhance the sodium storage capabilities of biomass-derived hard carbon involves component modulation of lignocellulosic precursors through tailored pretreatment protocols. However, the existing methodologies suffer from operational complexity. This work presents a synergistic ultrasonication-HCl pretreatment strategy that promotes lignin depletion and cavitation-induced nanopore templating in ramie precursors. This dual-action approach promotes (i) turbostratic domain formation via lignin removal, (ii) cavitation-mediated matrix etching to produce disordered carbon frameworks, and (iii) thermal-driven pore closure during carbonization. The optimized anode delivers a remarkable reversible capacity of 331.8 mA h g −1 at 0.1C, with the plateau capacity reaching 62 % of the total capacity. When paired with a Na₃V₂(PO₄)₃ cathode, the full cell achieves an energy density of 227.9 Wh kg −1 (based on both cathode and anode mass).

Developing a carbon anode with high performance but low cost is one most pivotal challenges for the commercialization of sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Therefore, an sulfur-mediated solid-state approach is proposed to form 3D crosslinked polymer networks in a pitch precursor and then achieve elaborate microstructures for effective sodium storage. Sulfur-linked structures interfere with the stacking regularity of carbon layers, thereby eliminating the graphitic transformation of pitch at high treatment temperatures, expanding interlayer distances, and promoting the development of closed pores. Consequently, sodium storage capacity in such carbon material is impressively augmented from 109 to 315 mA h g −1 , with a plateau contribution exceeding 81.3% at low voltages, which can improve energy density of SIBs. Compared to prior Oxygen-related methodologies, this sulfur-mediated technique not only offers a more scalable strategy but also achieves superior plateau performance at lower carbonization temperatures (≈1300 °C), far below the conventional threshold of 1500 °C. Additionally, comprehensive testing demonstrates that sodium storage operates via an “adsorption-intercalation-pore filling” mechanism, with closed nanopores playing a crucial role in enabling efficient Na storage through pore filling in the low voltage region. This work also presents a scalable strategy for the development of high-performance carbon anode materials from low-cost pitch.

The microstructure of hard carbons (HCs) including interlayer distance and lateral ab direction and pore size distribution plays a key role in regulating the sodium ions storage performance. Herein, by employing the gelatinous agar as a model precursor, series P-doping HCs (P-HC- x , x = 1, 2, 3, 4) are facilely prepared in batches via controllably regulating its crosslinking state by phytic acid (PA) at a low carbonization temperature of 750 °C, in which PA plays three roles (acid, flame retardant, and P-doping precursor) in promoting the final structure of P-HC-x. Among those, the puparium like P-HC-2 with expanded carbon interlayer distance of 3.91 Å and shortened lateral ab direction of 9.4 nm delivers a high reversible capacity of 394 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 with high increased slope capacity of 363 mAh g −1 as well as an ultrafast charge-discharge feature and a superlong cycle life. Pairing with the Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode, the fabricated sodium-ion full cells exhibit the 132 mAh g −1 reversible capacity at 0.1 A g −1 , and 86% capacity retention after 100 cycles. This work successfully develops slope-dominated high-performance carbon anode, which will provide new insights for the microstructure regulation and design of other precursor-derivedHCs.

Among anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), hard carbon (HC) gains more attention due to its low cost, high electronic conductivity, and renewable resources. However, sluggish kinetics result in its low-rate capability and unfavorable cycle stability. Moreover, HC often presents low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), which also limits the utilization of the battery capacity and energy density. Herein, nitrogen and phosphorus dual-doped HC (denoted as NPHC) with network structure is synthesized by a facile interfacial polymerization method, which endows the NPHC with synergistic effects of the enlarged interlayer spacing and improved conductivity. Consequently, the obtained NPHC exhibits a high reversible capacity (286 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), excellent rate capability (144 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 ), high ICE (71 %), and remarkable cyclability over 2000 cycles at 1 A g −1 . Moreover, the storage mechanism of sodium ions is examined by a series of ex-situ characterizations. Additionally, when coupled with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 as a cathode, the full cell delivers superior cyclability (capacity retains 90 % over 300 cycles at 1 A g −1 ). This work may shed new insight into designing other carbon-based electrode materials for high-performance energy storage. Graphical With hard carbon : we use a facile interfacial polymerization method to prepare hard carbon with N/P dual-doped (NPHC), which shows superb rate capability (286 and 144 mAh g −1 at 0.1 and 10 A g −1 , respectively). Through a series of analyses, NPHCS demonstrates a higher ion diffusion coefficient, capacitive contribution, and conductivity. This confirms that N/P dual-doping is more beneficial to improve electrochemical performance.

Compared with graphite, the lower sodiation potential and larger discharge capacity of hard carbon (HC) makes it the most promising anode material for sodium-ion battery. Utilizing ether-based electrolyte rather than conventional carbonate-based electrolyte, HC achieves superior electrochemical performance. Nevertheless, the mechanism by which ether-based electrolyte improves the properties of HC is still controversial, primarily focusing on whether it forms solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film. In this work, according to the sodium storage mechanisms in HC at low voltage (<0.1 V), including Na + -diglyme co-interaction into the carbon layer (SEI forbidden) and desolvated Na + insertion in the irregular carbon holes (SEI required), the NaPF 6 concentration in ether-based electrolyte was regulated, so as to construct a discontinuous-SEI on the surface of the HC anode, which significantly enhances the electrochemical performances of HC. Specifically, with 0.2 M NaPF 6 ether-based electrolyte, HC deliverers a discharge capacity of 459.7 mA h g −1 at 0.1 C and stays at 357.2 mA h g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C, which is substantially higher than that of higher/lower salt concentration electrolytes.
