High-performance hard carbon anode prepared via an ingenious green-hydrothermal route

Jing Wang,Wenjie Lv,Qingjuan Ren,Lei Yan,Lijun Zhang,Zhiqiang Shi

Phenolic resin, as a synthetic polymer precursor of hard carbon, has become the core anode precursor of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the carcinogenic formaldehyde is normally adopted in the synthesis of conventional phenolic resins. Meanwhile, the synthetic process is multifarious and prolonged, which is detrimental to mass production. In this paper, an eco-friendly phenolic resin was prepared by an efficient hydrothermal synthesis process using gentle and slightly toxic glyoxylic acid instead of notorious carcinogen formaldehyde. By adjusting the carbonization temperature of as-obtained phenolic precursor, the acquired optimal hard carbon anode material equipped a splendid reversible capacity of 325 mAh g −1 and a high initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 88.59%. Besides, it displayed an outstanding rate performance of 161.4 mAh g −1 for 300 cycles at 5 C with the capacity retention rate of 93.31%. When matched against the appropriate cathode, the full battery can provide a high energy density of 239 Wh kg −1 , displaying excellent rate capability and cycling stability. The participation of “green” aldehyde monomer in hydrothermal synthesis process for acquiring phenolic resin is an efficient and scalable approach for obtaining higher energy storage anode, which can pave environmentally-friendly way for the realization of large-scale energy storage application.

Surface organic nitrogen-doping disordered biomass carbon materials with superior cycle stability in the sodium-ion batteries

Wei Nie,Hongwei Cheng,Xiaolin Liu,Qiangchao Sun,Feng Tian,Wenli Yao,Shuquan Liang,Xionggang Lu,Jiang Zhou

To achieve widespread application of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) in the future new energy market, developing electrode materials with low-cost sustainability and excellent electrochemical properties is imperative. Herein, a mesoporous N-doping palm leaf-based hard carbon (PLHC-N) anode with a high-rate and long lifespan is synthesized via an in-situ polymerization method by using palm leaf as the carbon precursor and polyaniline as the nitrogen source. Benefiting from the natural holey structure, the PLHC-N exhibits excellent Na + storage capability with numerous ion transfer channels and a good volume buffer . Meanwhile, the N-doping materials improve ion and electron transferability and create more active sites for Na storage. Impressively, the PLHC-N sample shows an adsorption-intercalation-hole filling storage mechanism and affords an ultrahigh reversible capacity of 373 mAh g −1 at 25 mA g −1 , and long-term cycle stability at 200 mA g −1 (∼95.0% retention upon 1000 cycles). Moreover, a full cell with a Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 as cathode shows a favorable cyclability (112 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.5C (1C = 128 mA g −1 ) and a decent capacity retention of 90.1%). Given the cost effectiveness and material sustainability, our work provides novel strategy to design the hard carbon anode materials for advanced SIBs.

Marriage of an Ether-Based Electrolyte with Hard Carbon Anodes Creates Superior Sodium-Ion Batteries with High Mass Loading

Yongwu He,Panxing Bai,Shuyan Gao,Yunhua Xu

Inferior rate performance, insufficient cycle life, and low mass loading have restricted the practical application of hard carbon (HC) anodes in sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). Here, a compatible strategy is developed by matching HC anodes with an ether-based electrolyte. Systematical investigation reveals that good compatibility of the electrode–electrolyte systems forms thinner but a more sustainable solid-electrolyte interphase and delivers a higher ionic conductivity and Na+ ion diffusion coefficient than the commonly used ester-based electrolytes. Therefore, an excellent electrochemical performance is demonstrated with a long cycle life (∼196 mA h/g and 90% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 1 A/g), a super rate capability (∼51% capacity retention at 10 A/g) at a mass loading of 1.5 mg/cm2, and a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 85.9%. More importantly, a high reversible areal capacity of 4.3 mA h/cm2 can be achieved at an ultrahigh mass loading of 17 mg/cm2, superior to all reported HC anodes. Our findings not only shed light on the design of high-performance battery systems but also promise a commercial transformation from the lab test to mass production of NIBs.

Unravelling the anionic stability of an ether-based electrolyte with a hard carbon or metallic sodium anode for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

Jiarong He,Yuling Fu,Zhangyating Xie,Zhiyong Xia,Yili Chen,Yingkang Deng,Jinyan Guo,Jizheng Lin,Yutong Kuai,Weishan Li

In hard carbon (HC) anodes, elucidating the relationship between the solid electrolyte interphase formation and the solvated Na + co-intercalation mechanism is crucial, particularly considering different anionic salts in ether-based electrolytes. Here, we comprehensively explore the impact of different anionic salts on the electrochemical performance of HC/Na half-cell and elucidate the underlying mechanism through experimental studies and theoretical calculations. The surface morphology of the HC anode and its interphasial property are further investigated to evaluate the differences endowed by the presence of various anionic salts in diglyme (2G). The HC/Na half-cells with NaPF 6 -2G and sodium trifluoromethanesulfonate (NaCF 3 SO 3 )-2G display superior electrochemical performance with faster kinetics and lower interfacial resistance than those with NaClO 4 -2G, sodium bis-(fluorosulfonyl) imide (NaFSI)-2G and sodium bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (NaTFSI)-2G. NaClO 4 -2G forms a relatively thick interphase layer with high resistance at the electrode/electrolyte interface owing to its insufficient stability. NaFSI-2G and NaTFSI-2G exhibit severe side reactions with Na metal, producing a thick interphase layer on the HC surface with high interfacial resistance from excess electrolyte decomposition, thus deteriorating the electrochemical performance. In summary, the study on the stability of different anionic salts in ether-based electrolyte for the HC anode with the intercalation mechanism provides valuable insights for screening appropriate conductive salts for high-performance sodium-ion batteries, especially when considering Na metal counter/reference electrodes.

Design of cyclic carbonate-based electrolytes for HC anodes towards improved low-temperature performance in lithium-ion batteries system

Jingjiang Yang,Yifan Wang,Yanbo Liu,Gaigai Duan,Zhao Liang,Jingquan Han,Yong Huang,Xiaoshuai Han,Chunmei Zhang,Shuijian He,Shaohua Jiang

Hard carbon (HC) anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become more promising anode materials due to their high capacity, excellent capacity retention, superior cycling stability, low operating potential and mild electrode expansion. However, the compatibility of commonly used carbonate-based electrolytes in HC anode systems has rarely been investigated. Here, we systematically investigate the effects of the two most commonly used major components in electrolyte systems, ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate, on the HC anode of LIBs, including the cycling performance, Li + transport kinetics, and electrolyte–electrode interface composition. The results show that the propylene carbonate system possesses better cycling stability and kinetics in HC anodes for LIBs. Especially at low temperatures, the propylene carbonate system exhibited high-capacity retention (57.7 % at −20 °C and 24.1 % at −40 °C). Mechanistic studies reveal that Li + possess lower solvation energy in propylene carbonate, which can be easily separated from the solution to participate with the charging and discharging process. Moreover, due to the lower freezing point of propylene carbonate (−48.8 °C), PC-electrolyte based LIBs deliver good low temperature cycling stability. This work will provide guidance for the selection and design of HC anodes and electrolytes for LIBs in the near future.

Solid electrolyte interphase manipulation towards highly stable hard carbon anodes for sodium ion batteries

Panxing Bai,Xinpeng Han,Yongwu He,Peixun Xiong,Yufei Zhao,Jie Sun,Yunhua Xu

Electrolytes and interfacial chemistry with controllable properties are critical to improve the cycling stability and rate capability of hard carbons in sodium-ion batteries. Here a simple but effective strategy was developed to construct a sustainable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film on hard carbon anodes by introducing a small amount of ester additives as SEI film formation agents into an ether-based electrolyte. The involvement of the ester molecule into the sodium ion solvation structure promotes its reduction to produce more organic polymeric components. Combining the high ionic conductivity of ether-based electrolytes, such SEI film can effectively protect hard carbon electrodes from structural changes, and thus, demonstrating an extraordinary cycling performance with a remarkable capacity of 211 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at a high rate of 1 A g −1 , corresponding to a quite high capacity retention of 95.6%. The scalable leverage developed in this work highlights the promise of electrolyte screening and interfacial composition control for more efficient battery chemistries.

High Capacity and Cycle-Stable Hard Carbon Anode for Nonflammable Sodium-Ion Batteries

Xingwei Liu,Xiaoyu Jiang,Ziqi Zeng,Xinping Ai,Hanxi Yang,Faping Zhong,Yongyao Xia,Yuliang Cao

Nonflammable phosphate electrolytes are in principle able to build intrinsically safe Na-ion batteries, but their electrochemical incompatibility with anodic materials, especially hard carbon anode, restricts their battery applications. Here, we propose a new strategy to enable high-capacity utilization and cycle stability of hard carbon anodes in the nonflammable phosphate electrolyte by using low-cost Na+ salt with a high molar ratio of salt/solvent combined with an solid electrolyte interphase film-forming additive. As a result, the carbon anode in the trimethyl phosphate (TMP) electrolyte with a high molar ratio of [NaClO4]/[TMP] and 5% fluoroethylene carbonate additive demonstrates a high reversible capacity of 238 mAh g–1, considerable rate capability, and long-term cycling life with 84% capacity retention over 1500 cycles. More significantly, this work provides a promising route to build intrinsically safe and low-cost sodium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage applications.

Enhanced Anion-Derived Inorganic-Dominated Solid Electrolyte Interphases for High-Rate and Stable Sodium Storage

Jinhe Yu,Weicheng Ren,Chang Yu,Zhao Wang,Yuanyang Xie,Jieshan Qiu

It is highly desirable for the promising sodium storage possessing high rate and long stable capability, which are mainly hindered by the unstable yet conventional solvent-derived organic-rich solid electrolyte interphases. Herein, an electrolyte solvation chemistry is elaborately manipulated to produce an enhanced anion-derived and inorganic components-dominated solid electrolyte interphases by introducing a low permittivity (4.33) bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) ether diluent into the sodium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide-dimethoxyethane-based high concentration electrolyte to obtain a localized high concentration electrolyte. The bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) ether breaks the balance of original cation solvation structure and tends to interact with Na + -coordinated dimethoxyethane solvent rather than Na + in high concentration electrolyte, leaving an enhanced Coulombic interaction between Na + and (FSO 2 ) 2 N − , and more (FSO 2 ) 2 N − can enter the Na + solvation shell, forming a further increased number of Na + -(FSO 2 ) 2 N − -dimethoxyethane clusters (from 82.0% for high concentration electrolyte to 94.3% for localized high concentration electrolyte) at a low salt dosage. The preferential reduction of this (FSO 2 ) 2 N − -enriched clusters rather than the dimethoxyethane-dominated Na + solvation structure produces an enhanced anion-derived and inorganic components-dominated solid electrolyte interphases. The reversible charge storage process of Na is decoupled by operando Raman along with a shift of D and G peaks. Benefiting from the enhanced anion-derived electrode-electrolyte interface, the commercial hard carbon anode in localized high concentration electrolyte shows a well rate capability (5 A g −1 , 70 mAh g −1 ), cycle performance and stability (85% of initial capacity after 700 cycles) in comparison to that of high concentration electrolyte (68%) and low concentration electrolyte (only 5% after 400 cycles), indicative of uniqueness and superiorities towards stable Na storage.
