Hard carbon (HC) with larger interlayer spacing, lower operation potential and stable skeleton is a promising kind of anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), where heteroatom doping and structural design have been proved to be effective strategies to improve its Na + storage performance. Herein, biomass agar-derived N-doped porous carbon (NPC-Ts, T = 750, 900 and 1050 °C) were successfully fabricated by modulating carbonization temperature, where interlayer spacing, specifical surface area (SSA), micro/mesopore amount and N-doping levels and configurations (pyridinic N (N-6), pyrrolic N (N-5) and graphite N (N-Q)) were explored in detail. Among the NPC-900 shows the largest interlayer spacing (0.412 nm), SSA (3991 m 2 /g) and sum percentage of N-6 and N-5 (76.7 %). When applied as anode material for SIBs, NPC-900 exhibits the highly reversible capacity (430.9 mAh/g at 100 mA/g after 100 cycles) and excellent rate capability (162 mAh/g at 5000 mA/g) and outstanding cycle life (242.6 mAh/g at 1000 mA/g after 5000 cycles). More importantly, when coupled with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) cathode, the Na + full cell displays the highest practical energy density of 267 Wh/kg to date, to the best our knowledge, revealing its potential practical sodium storage applications.

Defects in hard carbon are primarily associated with the slope capacity arising from sodium ion adsorption on defect sites for sodium storage. However, the impact of defects on plateau sodium storage remains poorly understood owing to the difficulties for hard carbon in precisely customizing carbon defects in the walls of closed pores without changing other structures such as pore geometry. Here, sieving carbon is selected as a model material to study the role of defects within closed pores in plateau sodium storage, considering that its pore forming and pore sealing by chemical vapor deposition are decoupled during material preparation. Specifically, vacancy-dominated defects are formed within closed pores by hydrogen reduction of porous carbon precursor and an identical external surface with deposited carbon covered is obtained by chemical vapor deposition. Such a vacancy-rich sieving carbon exhibits a high specific capacity of 470 mAh g −1 , along with an increased plateau capacity and improved cycling stability, remaining 72.3 % of its initial capacity after 400 cycles (342 mAh g −1 ). A series of spectroscopic studies demonstrate that increased carbon vacancies promote the formation of sodium clusters with higher reversibility in closed pores. This work provides new insights into the mechanism of plateau sodium storage and offers an effective strategy to improve the capacity and cycling stability of carbon anodes for sodium-ion batteries.

Magnesium hydride is regarded as one of the most ideal candidates for hydrogen storage, but its relatively high operating temperatures and slow kinetics always hinder its commercial applications. Herein, we first fabricated hard-carbon-sphere-wrapped Ni (Ni/HCS) via a mild chemical method; subsequently, the as-prepared additive was introduced to fabricate an Mg–Ni/HCS composite by using hydriding combustion synthesis. Hard carbon spheres (HCS) effectively inhibited the agglomeration of hydride particles during hydrogen storage cycling; they could also provide active sites to promote the nucleation of Mg-based hydrides. During the hydriding combustion synthesis procedure, in situ-formed Mg2NiH4 could induce the absorption of MgH2, thus triggering its hydrogen properties. Remarkable enhancement in hydrogen absorption properties of the composite was found. The composite absorbed 6.0 wt% H2 within 5 min at 275 °C; moreover, even at 75 °C, it could still absorb 3.5 wt% H2. Furthermore, it delivered a high reversible hydrogen absorption capacity of 6.2 wt% and excellent rate capability at 350 °C. It was also demonstrated that the composite could release 6.2 wt% H2 at 350 °C within 5 min. A rather low activation energy value (65.9 kJ mol−1) for the dehydrogenation of MgH2 was calculated as compared to that for commercial MgH2 (133.5 kJ mol−1).

Starch, as a typical polysaccharide with natural spherical morphology, is not only a preferred precursor for preparing carbon materials but also a model polymer for investigating thermochemical evolution mechanisms. However, starch usually suffers from severe foaming and low carbon yield during direct pyrolysis. Herein, we report a simple and eco-friendly dry strategy, by maleic anhydride initiating the esterification of starch, to design carbon microspheres against the starch foaming. Moreover, the influence of ester grafting on the pyrolytic behavior of starch is also focused. The formation of ester groups in precursor guarantees the structural stability of starch-based intermediate because it can promote the accumulation of unsaturated species and accelerate the water elimination during pyrolysis. Meanwhile, the esterification and dehydration reactions greatly deplete the primary hydroxyl groups in the starch molecules and thus the rapid levoglucosan release is inhibited, which well keeps the spherical morphology of starch and ensures the high carbon yield. In further exploration as anode materials for Lithium-ion batteries, the obtained carbon microspheres exhibit good cyclability and rate performance with a reversible capacity of 444 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 . This work provides theoretical fundamentals for the controllable thermal transformation of biomass towards wide applications.

The plateau capacity of a hard carbon anode plays a crucial role in achieving the high energy density of sodium-ion batteries. However, the loss of plateau capacity due to polarization at high current densities imposes significant limitations on hard carbon applications. Ultra-micropores could maintain plateau capacity at high current densities but are generally prepared accompanied by micropores and mesopores that deteriorate the Na-ion storage performance. Herein, a hard carbon with ultra-micropores is prepared by a protonation-mediated strategy using an N, P co-doped biomass precursor. The P dopants favor reducing the interaction between N and C so that the confined volatiles of NH3 could be utilized to create ultra-micropores concentrated at 0.4–0.8 nm. These ultra-micropores enable the hard carbon to deliver a reversible capacity of 386 mA h g−1 at 20 mA g−1, a high plateau capacity of 173 mA h g−1, and an excellent rate capability of 106 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1. The plateau capacity and rate capability are superior to those of the reported hard carbons. This work provides a new approach for ultra-micropore construction within hard carbons and a new perspective for sodium-ion batteries toward high energy and power densities.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) offer great viability for extensive energy storage due to their abundance, low cost, and excellent safety. In this study, we investigate the relationship between P–O–C bonds content and electrochemical performance of black phosphorus–hard carbon–carbon nanotubes (BP-HC-CNTs) composite anode. A series of composites are prepared via ball milling, in which the relative P–O–C bonds content is modulated by varying the HC to CNTs ratio, and the effect of different relative P–O–C bond contents on the electrochemical performance of the materials is systematically investigated. The findings indicate that tuning the HC to CNTs ratio alters the chemical bonding degree between phosphorus and carbon, specifically the P–O–C bond content, which positively correlates with enhanced electrochemical performance. Notably, the composite with the highest P–O–C content (36 %) exhibits superior performance compared to those with lower bond contents: The specific capacity is approximately 2.9 times higher after 600 cycles at 6.0 A g ⁻¹ , and after 2000 cycles at 15.0 A g ⁻¹ , it is about 5.7 times higher. These results demonstrate excellent rate capability and cycling stability. Therefore, we propose that adjusting the hard carbon/carbon nanotubes ratio effectively regulates P–O–C bonds formation, which is essential for improving interfacial stability and electrochemical kinetics.

Bamboo-derived hard carbon emerges as a sustainable anode candidate for sodium-ion batteries, yet its electrochemical performance is hindered by inherent impurities and disordered microstructures. This study explores the synergistic effects of acid-leaching and pre‑carbonization, prior to high-temperature carbonization at 1300 °C, on enhancing sodium storage performance. Acid-leaching at 80 °C with a solid-liquid ratio of 1:15 for 30 min using 6 wt% HCl selectively removes hemicellulose and ash while reducing oxygen-containing groups, leading to an increase in edge defects and the retention of C O functional groups. These two active sites act as pseudocapacitive centers, enhancing capacity in the sloping region. Pre‑carbonization at 500 °C generates interconnected mesopores (0.038 cm 3 g −1 ), facilitating sodium-ion insertion in the plateau region. Additionally, the high carbon to oxygen ratio from acid-leaching, together with the enhanced graphite stacking (L c = 1.202 nm) induced by pre‑carbonization, improves the electrical conductivity and ion diffusion capability of the hard carbon. Compared with hard carbons derived from AcOH-leached, water-treated, and raw feedstocks, the HCl-leached hard carbon anode exhibits a higher initial Coulombic efficiency (70.4 %), enhanced rate capability (201.4 mAh g −1 at 5C), and a 32 % reduction in charge-transfer resistance. These findings highlight the role of structural engineering in enhancing renewable energy storage, directly linking microstructural modifications to electrochemical performance for sustainable design of high-performance biomass-derived sodium-ion battery anodes.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are anticipated to be a potentially more cost-effective alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for large-scale energy storage. Carbon materials are practical anodes, but the traditional production of hard carbon for SIBs often requires high temperatures exceeding 1300 °C. Aiming for a more economical approach, this work presents a carbon material synthesized through the low-temperature carbonization of 2,3-diaminophenazine and terephthalic acid IPB-C (600). Despite its low specific surface area, this carbon material demonstrates exceptional capacity and cycling stability because of its interlayer warping feature. It delivers a specific capacity of 370 mAh g −1 at 300 mA g −1 and maintains 77.98 % capacity retention after 1500 cycles. This research highlights the potential for producing high-capacity carbon negative electrode materials with cost-effective bulk chemicals for SIBs.

Cellulose , as it has high content and low cost along with the absence of heteroatoms, can well balance the cost and structural consistency issues raised by mass production. Herein, the cellulose-derived hard carbon as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries with high performance has been prepared by a one-step direct carbonization process using pure cellulose as a precursor in the temperature range of 900–1400 °C. Moreover, the effect of carbonization temperature on the microstructure and the sodium battery storage properties of cellulose-derived hard carbon was investigated by structural and morphological characterization, as well as electrochemical performance testing. The results show that the CHC-1300 electrode material displays a high reversible capacity of 373.2 mAh g −1 at 30 mA g −1 , and exhibits a desirable cycling stability with 89.7 % capacity retention even after 200 cycles. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry technique (CV) at different scan rates and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) have been employed to explore the sodium storage mechanism and sodium storage kinetics of cellulose-derived hard carbon. The results exhibit that the rate performance of the electrode material would be affected by the low apparent diffusion coefficient of sodium ions in the plateau region . Besides, a full-cell has been assembled with CHC-1300 as the anode and Na 0.83 Mg 0.11 Ni 0.22 Mn 0.63 O 2 (NMNM) as the cathode. The CHC-1300//NMNM full-cell shows high energy density and good cycling stability, which could verify the practical application of the cellulose-derived hard carbon.

Graphical Upcycling rice husks : Hard carbon materials derived from rice husks with hierarchical porous and high specific surface area structures were successfully prepared by a low-cost carbonization approach. The hard carbon material synthesized at 800 °C was exploited as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries, which results in promising enhancement in all electrochemical parameters. This work represents a promising technology for low-cost and high stable sodium-ion storage. Compared with the cathode materials, the research on the anode materials of the sodium-ion batteries has lagged behind. Therefore, development of the anode materials with high capacity, long life, and excellent rate properties is the key to unlocking the practical application for sodium-ion batteries. This study presents the preparation of hierarchical porous hard carbon as an active anode material from rice husks. The as-synthesized materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. These porous hard carbon materials exhibit a high specific surface area and are promising for reversible sodium storage. Galvanostatic studies show that the specific initial capacities of all samples were in the range of 130–300 mA h g −1 at a current density of 100 mA g −1 between 0.01 V and 2.3 V. Compared to the other samples, the hard carbon materials prepared at 800 °C from rice husk (RHPC-800) can deliver a high reversible capacity of 274 mA h g −1 at a current density of 25 mA g −1 , maintain a capacity of approximately 260 mA h g −1 , and retain 92.7 % of its capacity after 500 cycles. This excellent electrochemical performance of the as-prepared RHPC-800 material is attributed to the high specific surface area and low charge transfer resistance.

The recycled graphite (RG) and a new type of recycled graphite with multi-layer coating structure (RGC) were prepared by using spent graphite and asphalt. The electrochemical properties and coatings of RG and RGC were also investigated. The low graphitization degree of hard carbon and soft carbon was beneficial to improve the electrochemical properties of regenerated graphite, which was verified by first principles. The unique structure (soft carbon/ hard carbon/ graphite) limited the volume expansion of hard carbon and graphite when lithium ions were embedded or extruded, which improved the rate capability and cycling performance of the battery. Compared with spent graphite (SG) and recycled graphite (RG), the first charge-specific capacity of RGC at 0.1 C was 349.17 mAh·g − 1 , and the coulombic efficiency was 82.47%. Impressive reversible capacity was 263.38 mAh·g − 1 after 130 cycles at 0.5 C and discharge capacity of 188 mAh·g − 1 at 1 C. Due to the pre-lithiation of RGC, the first coulomb efficiency (99.49%) of the full battery (18,650) was higher than that of commercial graphite, and the energy conservation rate was 65.6% after 2000 cycles. This study provides a simple and effective scheme, and realizes the clean recovery and high value commercial application of spent graphite.

Low-cost hybrid sodium-ion capacitors (SICs) can deliver high energy density at high power, showing tremendous potential for application in large-scale grids. The negative electrode using hard carbon (HC) faces the limitations of poor rate capability and low volumetric capacity. Herein, we report the design of internal-parallel hybrid electrodes composed of HC microparticles (MPs) and anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2(A) NPs) for sodium-ion storage. Taking advantage of the rapid surface-redox properties of TiO2 NPs and the pseudocapacitive Na+ adsorption of HC in the slope region (1.5–0.1 V vs Na+/Na), the hybrid electrodes deliver enhanced high-rate capacities. Additionally, by utilization of the geometric features of the MPs and NPs, the compaction densities and volumetric capacities of the hybrid HC/TiO2 electrodes are much higher than those of HC electrodes. A series of fine controls demonstrates that the C60T40 electrode (HC/TiO2 = 60:40 in wt %) exhibits excellent comprehensive electrochemical performance, including high volumetric/gravimetric capacities, high-rate capability, and long-term cyclability. Even at a high mass loading of 10 mg cm–2, the HC/TiO2 thick-film electrode delivers a high volumetric capacity of 162 mAh cm–3 at 5 mA cm–2, surpassing that of the HC electrode (64 mAh cm–3). This work highlights the design of internal-parallel hybrid electrodes with a comprehensive electrochemical performance for advanced SICs.
