Heat-resistant boron Carbonitride with nitrogen-vacancies and oxygen-doping for efficient tetracycline removal: Adsorption characteristics, mechanism and regeneration

Xu-Dong Miao,Rui-Xiang Zhang,Wen-Tao Li,Qian Wang,Yu-Han Cai,Yong Guo,Ai-Min Li

The increasing environmental risks associated with tetracycline (TC) have been of widespread interest in the development of adsorbents for the efficient treatment of TC. This work synthesized a high-performance boron carbonitride (BCN v O) with nitrogen-vacancies (N v ) and oxygen-doping (O d ) via a hydrogen peroxide mediated strategy. The adsorption capacity of BCN v O-1 for TC (202.85 mg/g) is 1.79 times higher than that of BCN (113.08 mg/g). The adsorption process is well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and controlled by surface and intra-pore diffusion. Langmuir can well characterize isothermal adsorption with the fitted maximum adsorption up to 440.53 mg/g. Thermodynamics indicates a spontaneous and endothermic progress in BCN v O-1 adsorption. The abundant pore structures promote pore filling of TC by BCN v O-1. N v and O d enhance BCN v O-1 proton capture, and the captured protons strengthen hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions during adsorption. The functional groups, aromatic regions, and B N rings on BCN v O-1 are involved in hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking to TC. BCN v O-1 has high adsorption performance, great environmental appropriateness and thermal regeneration performance, suggesting good prospects for its potential application in environmental wastewater treatment.

Boron Carbon Nitride Semiconductor Modified with CeO2 for Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 with H2O: Comparative Study

Yuxin Mei,Nicui Yuan,Yuwei Liu,Xin Zhang,Baining Lin,Yonghua Zhou

Boron carbon nitride (BCN) is an emerging metal-free catalyst for CO 2 photocatalytic reduction. However, the fast electron-hole recombination as well as the weak absorption for ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) light are still challenging for the activity upgrading of BCN. In this paper, a BCN/CeO 2 heterostructure via N-O-Ce bonding was fabricated by a urea-assistant heat-precipitation technique and confirmed by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM and XPS characterizations. For CO 2 photoreduction with H 2 O as reducing agent, the BCN/CeO 2 heterostructure delivered an obviously enhanced catalytic performance with CO yield of ca. 6-fold that of BCN. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer (DRS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and transient photocurrent response measurements revealed that the electron-hole separation efficiency and charge transfer are efficiently promoted on CeO 2 /BCN heterostructure, along with the boosted light harvesting in visible and ultraviolet light range. Furthermore, based on the photo(electro)chemical and photocatalytic results, a possible CO 2 photocatalytic reduction mechanism was proposed.

A novel nano-sized red phosphorus decorated borocarbonitride heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic performance for tetracycline degradation

Yi Wang,Xing Zhao,Lan Wang,Yu Yang,Limin Jiao,Zhihao Wu,Xuan Gao,Sheng Cheng,Mingzhang Lin

Removal of antibiotics from aqueous solution by semiconductor photocatalysis has aroused much attention, yet developing high-performance visible-light-driven photocatalysts remains a huge challenge. Herein, red phosphorus/borocarbonitride (RP/BCN) heterojunction photocatalysts were fabricated by growing RP nanoparticles on BCN nanosheets through a vaporization–deposition method. A series of characterization techniques verified the formation of the heterojunction and the improved photo-electric properties. Benefiting from the strong optical absorption and effective photocarrier separation, the RP/BCN composites showed significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity towards tetracycline (TC) degradation. After 90 min of visible light illumination, a TC degradation ratio of 73.8% could be achieved over the optimized photocatalyst with an apparent rate constant of 0.0224 min−1, which was almost 7.5 and 13.2 folds higher than that of pristine RP and BCN, respectively. The possible degradation pathways of TC were illustrated by identifying the reaction intermediates using UPLC-MS analysis. Such improvement was ascribed to the formation of a type-II heterojunction with the intimate interfacial contact between RP and BCN, which greatly facilitated the spatial separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. Furthermore, the radical capturing experiments ascertained that the generated holes and superoxide radicals dominated TC degradation. Based on these results, a reasonable mechanism was proposed to depict the photocatalytic degradation of TC over RP/BCN heterojunction composites. This work is expected to pave the way for constructing high-efficiency BCN-based heterojunction photocatalysts towards environmental protection.

Porous Carbon/Borocarbonitride hybrid with enhanced tap density as a polar host for ultralong life Lithium-Sulfur batteries

Xiao-Fei Yu,Wen-Cui Li,Bin He,Lei Shi,Fan Tang,Dong Yan,Dongqi Wang,An-Hui Lu

The severe shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics are the current bottlenecks of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, resulting in capacity fading and inferior rate performance, especially under the condition of high sulfur loading and low electrolyte/sulfur ratio (E/S). Herein, conductive carbon nanoparticles (Ketjen Black, KB) covered by borocarbonitride (BCN) are assembled into micro-sized particles to form a polar KB@BCN hybrid, which is employed as a sulfur host with enhanced tap density via a facile intergrowth method. At a molecular level, BCN, endowed with abundant adsorption sites as the adsorbent and catalyst, can adsorb polysulfides and catalyze the conversion of polysulfides. On the nanometer scale, the BCN is loaded on the highly conductive KB nanoparticles, which can improve the conductivity of the hybrid (1786 S m −1 ), thereby improving the conversion of polysulfides. On the micrometer scale, the BCN and the KB nanoparticles together form micro-sized particles to improve the tap density, which is beneficial to build thick electrodes and reduce the amount of electrolyte. When applied as a sulfur cathode, KB@BCN-2 shows good cycling capability (a low-capacity decay of 0.05% after 800 cycles at 0.5C) and high rate performance (765 mA h g −1 at 3.0C). Even under a lean electrolyte condition (E/S = 5 μL mg −1 ), the KB@BCN-2-S has a high initial capacity of 1266 mA h g −1 at 0.1C. Significantly, incorporating polar electrocatalysts with carbon matrix to form a high-density sulfur host through secondary granulation can provide a new insight for achieving high-performance Li-S batteries.

Regulation of charge transfer direction and key steps via Y modification of redox-active sites on borocarbonitride for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Xianghui Zeng,Xuelin Bu,Hui Chen,Zhaohui Huang,Wei Fang,Daheng Wang,Xuan He,Xing Du,Weixin Li,Haijun Zhang,Lei Zhao

Hexagonal borocarbonitride (h-BCN) have garnered significant attention for their unique optoelectronic properties in solar-to-fuel conversions. However, the efficiency of h-BCN in the field of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is limited by high reaction energy barriers and serious charge recombination. Here, a Y-modified h-BCN were synthesized through an organic-inorganic hybrid precursor pyrolysis method. Both theoretical simulation and experimental analysis demonstrated that the Y-modified sample exhibits an inhomogeneous charge distribution that favours rapid charge transfer and can decrease the reaction barrier of the rate-control step. Further investigations indicated that adding Y changes the electronic structure of BCN, which leads to rapid charge transfer/separation and an increased lifespan for photoinduced electrons. As a result, 2.5%Y/BCN exhibited improved CO 2 photoreduction activity with a fuel yield of 50.35 μmol g −1 . Notably, this outstanding performance was achieved without the use of any cocatalyst or sacrificial agent. In the meanwhile, cycle test shows the photocatalyst's great stability. The findings provide a useful suggestions for BCN-based photocatalysts.

Water-soluble boron carbon oxynitride dots with excellent solid-state fluorescence and ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence

Han Shenghui,Lian Gang,Zeng Xiaoliang,Cao Zhaozhen,Wang Qilong,Cui Deliang,Wong Ching-Ping

Developing metal-free and long lifetime room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials has received tremendous interest due to their numerous potential applications, of which stable triplet-excited state is the core challenge. Here, boron carbon oxynitride (BCNO) dots, emitting stable blue fluorescence and green RTP, are reported for the first time. The obtained BCNO dots exhibit an unexpected ultralong RTP lifetime of 1.57 s, lasting over 8 s to naked eyes. The effective doping of carbon and oxygen elements in boron nitride (BN) actually provides a small energy gap between singlet and triplet states, facilitating the intersystem crossing (ISC) and populating of triplet excitons. The formation of compact cores via crystallization and effective inter-/intra-dot hydrogen bonds further stabilizes the excited triplet states and reduces quenching of RTP by oxygen at room temperature. Based on the water-soluble feature of BCNO dots, a novel advanced security ink is developed toward anti-counterfeiting tag and confidential information encryption. This study extends BCNO dots to rarely exploited phosphorescence fields and also provides a facile strategy to prepare ultralong lifetime metal-free RTP materials.

Synthesis of BCN nanoribbons from coconut shells using as high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Shuaifeng Chen,Huan Yang,Qing Chen,Longyang Liu,Xue Hou,Lijie Luo,Chunfu Lin,Changjiu Li,Yongjun Chen

A green and efficient route to the synthesis of boron carbonitride (BCN) nanoribbons was demonstrated using waste coconut shells, boric acid and urea as the raw materials. The BCN nanoribbons were then applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The BCN nanoribbons possessed high specific surface area and porosity because of the inherent characteristics of the coconut shells, providing multiple active sites and diffusion channels for Li + ions. High specific capacity, excellent rate capability and cycling stability were achieved especially when the carbon content in BCN is relatively high. The average reversible capacity and the retention rate reached 800 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and 98% after 1000 cycles, respectively. This route not only paved a new way to the synthesis of BCN nanoribbons, but also realized the reuse of waste natural resources for fabricating LIBs anode materials with excellent performance.

Boron carbon nitride as efficient oxygen reduction reaction support

Fang Liu,Dazhi Gao,Fangqing Wang,Pengcheng Shen,Yang Liu,Shiqing Zhang,Ying Li,Jun Zhang,Yanming Xue,Chengchun Tang

The electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for energy conversion systems such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries . Boron carbon nitrogen (BCN) is a novel functional material with a high specific surface area , excellent corrosion resistance , and outstanding electrochemical stability. These properties make BCN an effective ORR catalyst and a promising support for metal catalysts . This study leveraged the strong interaction between BCN and metals to anchor platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) onto the BCN surface (Pt/BCN), significantly enhancing the durability of traditional Pt/C catalysts in ORR. The half-wave potential of Pt/BCN is 0.927 V, higher than Pt/XC-72R (0.857 V) and commercial Pt/C (0.879 V). Notably, after 10,000 durability test cycles, the mass activity (MA) of Pt/XC-72R and commercial Pt/C decreased by 67 % and 75 %, respectively. Even after 50,000 cycles, Pt/BCN exhibited only a 54 % decrease in MA. Experimental data and density functional theory calculations confirmed increased electron transfer from Pt to the BCN support, indicating a strong electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) between Pt and BCN. This strong EMSI effectively anchored the Pt NPs, preventing migration and aggregation during the ORR process. Consequently, our research introduces a novel electrocatalyst support material with significant potential for ORR and broader applications.

Boron Carbon Nitride Semiconductors Decorated with CdS Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2

Min Zhou,Sibo Wang,Pengju Yang,Caijin Huang,Xinchen Wang

Ternary boron carbon nitride (BCN) semiconductors have been developed as emerging metal-free photocatalysts for visible-light reduction of CO2, but the achieved efficiency is still not satisfying. Herein, we report that the CO2 photoreduction performance of a bulk BCN semiconductor can be substantially improved by surface engineering with CdS nanoparticles. The CdS/BCN photocatalysts are characterized completely by diverse tests (e.g., XRD, FTIR, XPS, DRS, SEM, TEM, N2 sorption, PL, and transient photocurrent spectroscopy). Performance of the CdS/BCN heterostructures is evaluated by reductive CO2 conversion reactions with visible light under benign reaction conditions. Compared with bare BCN material, the optimized CdS/BCN photocatalyst exhibits a 10-fold-enhanced CO2 reduction activity and high stability, delivering a considerable CO production rate of 12.5 μmol h–1 (250 μmol h–1 g–1) with triethanolamine (TEOA) as the reducing agent. The reinforced photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity is mainly assigned to the obviously improved visible-light harvesting and the greatly accelerated separation/transport kinetics of light-triggered electron–hole pairs. Furthermore, a possible visible-light-induced CO2 reduction mechanism is proposed on the basis of photocatalytic and photo(electro)chemical results.

Design of Boron Carbonitrides-Polyaniline (BCN-PANI) assembled supercapacitor with high voltage window

Dong Shi,Mingzhi Yang,Baoguo Zhang,Haixiao Hu,Zizheng Ai,Yongliang Shao,Jianxing Shen,Yongzhong Wu,Xiaopeng Hao

Boron carbonitrides (BCN) have been widely concerned in the field of energy storage and conversion. However, the energy storage mechanism of electrical double-layer behavior and their stacked-layer structure severely limit the improvement of capacitance, thereby hindering their further development in energy storage. Therefore, an ultrasonic-ball milling method was first chosen to obtain BCN nanosheets, together with a feasible way of polyaniline (PANI) modification performed to boost the capacitive reaction of BCN nanosheets. For the first time, a BCN-PANI-based symmetric supercapacitor device can reach a high voltage window of 3.0 V when 1 M Et 4 N·BF 4 was chosen as the electrolyte. The working voltage of 3.0 V is three times that of a device with pure PANI with the ultrahigh energy density of 67.1 W h kg −1 , superior to most of the reported PANI-based devices. The eminent electrochemical performance provides a promising strategy to pave the way for configuring carbon-based multiple composite electrodes for other energy storage devices.

Tuning electronic environment of B sites in boron carbonitride nanoribbon boosts catalytic activity of reducing N2 to NH3

Kai Zhang,Rui Zhang,Yuxin Cui,Jiayin Shang,Xueling Wei,Sumin Wang,Siqin Jia,Ke Qin,Haiyan Zhang,Hongyan Wang,Taotao Ai,Qiguan Wang

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to synthesize ammonia is an important and challenging task in chemistry, where low-cost, highly active non-metallic catalysts such as boron carbonitride (BCN) are still highly desired. Tuning the electronic environment of the active site B is an effective approach to improve the NRR performance of BCNs. However, the study on the mechanism of this effect has been seriously neglected. The diversity and controllability in atomic arrangements of BCN make it suitable for studying the relationship between the local chemical environment of boron and the catalytic properties. To this end, we design four kinds of BCN materials named as homogeneous BCN nanoribbon and BCN nanosheet enriched with B − C active sites and localized phase-separated BCN nanoribbon and BCN nanosheet rich in B − N active sites, and theoretically screen the homogeneous type BCN nanoribbons that have better NRR performances. Meanwhile, we experimentally demonstrate that the optimized charge redistribution of B atoms in BCN skeleton by tuning the electronic environment makes the B − C sites being the effective centers in NRR, and arising the excellent NH 3 productivity of 63.02 μg h −1 mg − 1 cat with a highest Faraday efficiency of 32.28 %.

Synthesis and ceramization of a soluble single-source precursor for SiZrBCN multinary ceramics with enhanced oxidation resistance

Zongyu Liu,Hongyan Zhao,Yongsheng Tian,Zhijun Dong,Hui Zhu,Yanjun Li,Ye Cong,Baoliu Li,Jianguang Guo,Jiang Zhang

This study proposed a new zirconium-contained polyborosilazane (PSNB-Zr) precursor in steps with methyldichlorosilane (MDCS), methylvinyldichlorosilane (MVDCS), hexamethyldisilazane (HMDZ), pyridine borane and zirconocene dichloride (Cp 2 ZrCl 2 ) as raw materials. After pyrolysis of the PSNB-Zr, the corresponding silicoboron carbonitride containing zirconium (SiZrBCN) ceramics were obtained. This precursor structure was analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer ( 1 H NMR). In addition, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were carried out to analyze the ceramic microstructure and phase composition. Conversion from the precursor into the ceramic phase was investigated by TG-MS. The results suggest‌ that the precursor has a less branched structure and is highly soluble in benzene, toluene, xylene and n-hexane. The precursor derived SiZrBCN ceramics are amorphous up to 1400 °C. When the precursor is heated to 1600 °C, SiC, Si 3 N 4 and Zr 2 CN are formed, and SiC, ZrB 2 , Si 3 N 4 , BN multiphase ceramics are obtained upon heat-treatment at 1800 °C with the phase transformation of Zr 2 CN. During the heat treatment, the ceramics change from amorphous to crystalloid with the release of small molecule like CH 4 , NH 3 , etc. The antioxidant properties of the SiZrBCN ceramics were tested at 1100-1600 °C in static air atmosphere. A compact oxidation layer is prepared on the surface of SiZrBCN ceramics, which was mainly composed of SiO 2 , ZrO 2 and ZrSiO 4 . The formation of ZrSiO 4 inhibits the evaporation of SiO 2 , thus improving the oxidation performance of SiZrBCN ceramics.
