Fluxing Agents on Ceramification of Composites of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2/Boron Phenolic Resin

Shi Minxian,Chen Xia,Fan Shanshan,Shen Shirley,Liu Tianxiang,Huang Zhixiong

Fluxing agents of zinc borate, antimony oxide, galss frit A and glass frit B, with different melting or softening point temperatures, were added into MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 /boron phenol formaldehyde resin (MAS/BPF) composites to lower the formation temperature of eutectic liquid phase and promote the ceramification of ceramifiable composites. The effects of fluxing agents on the thermogravimetric properties, phase evolution, and microstructure evolution of MAS / BPF composites were characterized by TG-DSC, XRD and SEM analyses. The results reveal that the addition of a fluxing agent highly reduces the decomposition rate of MAS / BPF composites. Fluxing agents lower the formation temperatures of liquid phases of ceramifiable MAS / BPF composites obviously, and then promote the ceramification and densification process. The final residues of composites are ceramic surrounded by large amount of glass phases.

Ablation behavior of ZrSi2-B4C-modified carbon fiber/boron phenolic resin ceramizable composites at different heat fluxes

Guoqin Jiang,Zongyi Deng,Minxian Shi,Wei Zhang,Yang Liu,Wenjing Cao,Linqin Gao,Yanbin Wang,Zhixiong Huang

Carbon fiber/phenolic resin (CF/Ph) composites are widely used as outer surface thermal protection materials in hypersonic vehicles because of their excellent ablation resistance. As the flight speed of the vehicle increases, the problem of CF being prone to oxidation in high-temperature aerobic environments becomes more severe, hindering the adaptation of CF/Ph to more extreme service environments. In this study, ZrSi 2 -B 4 C was introduced into carbon fibre/boron phenolic resin (CF/BPR) to improve its ablation resistance. At 2.4 MW/m 2 , the linear ablation rate (LAR) and mass ablation rate (MAR) of the composites were as low as −0.032 mm/s and 0.0186 g/s, respectively. At 3.6 MW/m 2 , the LAR and MAR were as low as −0.005 mm/s and 0.0273 g/s, respectively. These findings indicate that the ceramizable composites exhibit excellent ablation resistance under both low and high heat flux conditions. The ablation mechanism of the composites was revealed. The in situ ceramization of ZrSi 2 and B 4 C formed a Zr-Si-B-C-O ceramic layer, which hindered the thermal oxidation and aerodynamic erosion of CF and PyC.

Ceramification of Composites of MgO-Al3O3-SiO2/Boron Phenolic Resin with Different Calcine Time

Shi Minxian,Tang Qingxiu,Fan Shanshan,Dong Chuang,Huang Zhixiong

The ceramifiable polymer composite of MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 /boron phenolic resin(MAS/BPF) with 40wt% of inorganic fillers was calcined at 1 200 °C for different time to promote ceramification of ceramifiable composite and improve heat resistance. The effects of different calcine time on the macroscopical morphology, mass loss, phase evolution, microstructure and chemical bond evolution of MAS/BPF composites were characterized by XRD, XPS, and SEM analyses. The experimental results reveal that the increase of calcine time result in the fewer holes, relatively denser and smoother top layer of MAS/BPF composites and protect the interior from deeper decomposition. The final residues of composites are amorphous carbon and C-O-Si-Al-Mg ceramic. And MAS/BPF composites show excellent mass stability, low shrinkage and self-supporting features after 2 h holding compared with BPF composites without 40wt% of inorganic fillers.

Strong Effect of Process Parameters on the Properties of Boron-Containing Phenolic Resins with High Char Yield

Yu Sun,Yuguo Sun

This work is focused on the optimization of critical process parameters for preparation of boron-containing phenolic resin (B-containing PR), including the molar ratios of formaldehyde/phenol and potassium borate/phenol, reaction time; and measurement of surface tension of B-containing PR solution and wettability between B-containing PR solution and carbon fibers. The effects of the formaldehyde/phenol and potassium borate/phenol molar ratios on the char yield of the B-containing PR was studied. The highest char yield of B-containing PR could be as high as 71% under optimal conditions (molar ratios of formaldehyde/phenol = 1.8 and potassium borate/phenol = 0.2, and reaction time = 13 h). The effect of concentration and tested temperature on the surface tension of B-containing PR solution was investigated, and the wettability between B-containing PR solution and carbon fibers was evaluated for the first time, providing useful theory and experimental data for the preparation of B-containing PR-based composites.Keywords:boron-containing phenolic resin;molar ratio;reaction time;char yield;surface tension;wettability

Enhanced mechanical, thermal and ablation properties of carbon fiber/BPR composites modified by mica synergistic MoSi2 at 1500 °C

Shiquan Zhang,Jian Zhang,Suohui Yang,Minxian Shi,Junguo Li,Qiang Shen

Ablation material had been widely used in aerospace attributed to its reliability and strong adaptability but was usually accompanied by low strength at higher temperatures. Here, a high flexural strength of 66.91 MPa after ablation at 1500 °C of carbon fiber/boron phenolic resin (CF/BPR) composite modified by MoSi 2 and mica was reported. With the proportion of MoSi 2 and mica was 9:1, the formed appropriate content of the liquid phase improved the reactivity of MoSi 2 powders and provided a suitable interfacial state between CF and the matrix. The result of the oxygen-acetylene test showed that the mass ablation and the linear ablation reduced to 0.034 g/s and 0.006 mm/s, respectively. Owing to the formed liquid phase wrapping the carbon fiber and ceramic layer on the surface improved the ablation resistance. These high-strength CF/BPR composites have strong potential in new aerospace materials.

Ablation behavior and high temperature ceramization mechanism of TiB2-B4C-ZrC modified carbon fiber/boron phenolic resin composites

Shaoxiong Weng,Zongyi Deng,Zhixiong Huang,Minxian Shi,Yuzhan Lu

The carbon fiber (CF) reinforced boron phenolic resin (BPR) matrix composite, renowned for its exceptional ablation resistance, represents a promising material for high-temperature applications. However, hypersonic vehicles are subjected to increasingly challenging service environments, which necessitate materials capable of enduring even more extreme temperatures. Consequently, there is a growing need for composites that exhibit superior ablation resistance. To tackle these demanding requirements, this research initiative introduces the integration of ceramizable fillers, including TiB2, B4C, and ZrC, into the composite structure to create a high-temperature ceramizable system. The experimental findings indicate that the composites formulated with this innovative system demonstrate extraordinary ablation resistance, even when exposed to oxyacetylene flames with a heat flux of 4364 kW/m 2 . Notably, the measured linear ablation rate and mass ablation rate were recorded at −0.012 mm/s and 0.0268 g/s, respectively. These values are exceptionally low. Subsequent analysis utilizing X-ray diffraction (XRD) and additional characterization techniques has confirmed the formation of a dense ceramic layer with a B-C-O-Ti-Zr composition on the composite surface at elevated temperatures. This ceramic layer acts as a formidable barrier, significantly mitigating the ablation effects caused by high-temperature exposure. Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that the formation of the ceramic layer is accompanied by an endothermic reaction, which consequently leads to a reduction in the thermal conduction of the composite to some extent.

Ablation resistance and high-temperature insulation capacity of TiB2-B4C modified Al-coated carbon fibre/boron phenolic resin ceramizable composites

Xueyuan Yang,Linxuan Li,Minxian Shi,Zhixiong Huang,Zongyi Deng

The inherent susceptibility to oxidation limits the application of carbon fibre/phenolic resin composites (CF/Ph) in the thermal protection of hypersonic vehicle engines. Herein, TiB 2 -B 4 C modified Al-coated carbon fibre/boron phenolic resin ceramizable composites were fabricated. The optimal ceramizable composite (T 30 C 10 ) exhibited excellent ablation resistance and high-temperature insulation capacity at a linear ablation rate and bottom-surface temperature of −0.00768 mm/s and 129.8 °C, respectively. Oxygen consumption and inhibition, carbon fixation, and self-healing effects contributed to the excellent ablation resistance, and the effects of the Al coatings and carbothermal reduction reactions led to excellent high-temperature insulation capacities.

Mechanical and Ablative Properties of TiC-B4C Modified Carbon Fiber/Boron Phenolic Resin Composites in High-Temperature Environments

Wei Zhang,Guoqin Jiang,Yang Liu,Zongyi Deng,Zhixiong Huang,Xueyuan Yang

Carbon fiber/phenolic resin composites (CF/Ph) are often used on the surface of hypersonic vehicles as thermal protection materials. In this paper, the composite materials were prepared by a compression molding process with carbon fiber and boron phenolic resin modified by TiC and B4C. The high-temperature flexural strength and anti-ablation behavior of the composites (TB) were studied. The results showed that the residual weight yield at 1500 °C of TB-10 (B4C content of 10 phr) increased by 39.22% compared to that with no B4C (TB-0). The flexural strength of TB-10 was increased by 19.51% and 19.69% at 1400 °C and 1600 °C, respectively, with respect to TB-0 at the same temperatures. The linear ablation rate and mass ablation rate of TB-10 were reduced by 24.32% and 5.58%, respectively, compared with TB-0. By exploring the anti-ablative mechanisms, it was revealed that PyC, liquid B2O3 and TiO2, all of which were formed at high temperatures, tended to fill the inner cracks of the composite and, therefore, prevent the oxide to further diffuse in. Along with the outer ceramic layer, the three components above play a synergistic effect to improve the ablative property.

High Temperature Flexural Strength, Microstructure, and Phase Evolution of Quartz Fiber/Boron Phenolic Resin Ceramizable Composite Modified with W and B4C

He Ding,Sige Huang,Xiaofan Liu,Zongyi Deng,Minxian Shi,Zhixiong Huang,Yue Wu

In order to investigate the effect of refractory metal on the high temperature properties of phenolic resin matrix composites, modified quartz fiber reinforced ceramizable composites were prepared by a molding process with a refractory component, tungsten, as the functional component and boron carbide as the ceramic forming agent. The effects of the tungsten and the boron carbide on the heat resistance of the composite were investigated. The results showed that the introduced refractory metal tungsten and the boron carbide can react to form tungsten borides and tungsten carbides at high temperature, and form a ceramic layer on the surface of the composite, which can fill the defects caused by pyrolysis of matrix and improve the high temperature performance of the composite. When the content of boron carbide was 10 wt% and the content of tungsten powder was 30 wt%, the flexural strength of the composite before and after heat treatment at 1200 °C were increased by 54.6% and 30.2% respectively compared with that without filler.

High temperature flexural strength, microstructure, phase evolution and anti-oxidation mechanism of Al-coated carbon fiber/boron phenolic resin ceramizable composite modified with TiB2 and B4C

Zongyi Deng,Xueyuan Yang,Xiaobo Yu,Zhixiong Huang,Di Zhu,Minxian Shi

Carbon fiber/phenolic resin composites (CF/Ph) have attracted great interests in the field of thermal protection materials for their characteristics of high specific strength and easy manufacturing. However, CF/Ph are inherently susceptible to oxidation failure at elevated temperatures. In this study, a novel Al-coated carbon fiber/boron phenolic resin ceramizable composite modified with TiB 2 and B 4 C was fabricated by an impregnating and compression molding route. Thermal stability, flexural strength , microstructure and phase evolution of the resulting ceramizable composite were studied. The residue yield at 1400 °C and flexural strength after treated at 1400 °C for 15min was 90.4% and 53.1 MPa, respectively, which was increased by 15.9% and 532.1% than that without ceramizable fillers. Surface defects generated by matrix pyrolysis were well healed, and PyC and carbon fibers were covered with dense ceramic layers while the fracture surface was covered with relatively continuous ceramic layers without visible pores. Multiphase ceramics composed of TiB 2 , TiO 2 , TiC and PyC were identified. Furthermore, oxidation failure and anti-oxidation mechanism was revealed based on the aforementioned characterizations and thermodynamic calculation results. Oxidation resistance got enhanced markedly for synergistic effects of oxygen consuming, carbon fixation, oxygen barrier and endothermic effect, which were derived from ceramization reactions between TiB 2 , B 4 C, O 2 , Al and PyC.
