Achieving high performance room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with a clearly understood mechanism is highly desired. In this work, efficient RTP materials with a delayed emission quantum yield of 50% were synthesized through loading thiophenes into the matrix of inorganic boric acid (BA). The RTP mechanisms were clarified through structural, photophysical, and theoretical studies of RTP materials produced by loading a series of thiophenes into a BA matrix. Our study demonstrated the critical role of molecular interactions between BA and thiophenes. Covalent bonds have strengthened the hydrogen bonds to modulate the photophysical properties of thiophenes, which reduced the energy gap between the singlet and triplet states. The RTP color and emission lifetime could be well-tuned by substituting the chemical groups on the skeleton of thiophenes, which endowed their applications with information encryption. These results opened a door for designing efficient RTP materials for various applications as well as a clear mechanism for studying the host–guest systems.

Graphical A straightforward heat- treatment strategy is proposed to load 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride into the matrix of boric acid to produce powders with a near-unity quantum yield and tunable emission color from yellow to green. The confinement effect of boric acid is responsible for the high emission efficiency of products. Developing solid luminescent materials with a unity quantum yield and tunable emission color is promising, although it is still a difficult task. A straightforward heat-treatment method has been developed to load 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) into the matrix of boric acid (BA) to produce powders with a near-unity quantum yield and tunable emission color from yellow to green. Our results suggest that the emission of the powders originates from PTCDA, and the tunability of the emission color is caused by the hydrolysis of PTCDA in the alkaline environment. The near-unity quantum yield is attributed to the BA matrix, which confines PTCDA. In addition, the powder also shows excellent thermal stability that allows its application in light-emitting diodes. The above results are important for the development of solid-state luminescent materials for various applications, and also provide a clue for studying the emission properties of luminescent materials.

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials are normally prepared by doping guest materials into space-limited host materials to inhibit nonradiative decay. This work aims to prepare a long afterglow excitation-dependent emission RTP material by doping a small amount of 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid into the boric acid matrix, followed by heat-treating. The calculation of density functional theory shows that the electron cloud distribution and electron transfer trend of the selected material reduces the energy requirement to excite the RTP properties of the obtained materials. The obtained RTP materials can be excited by UV light at 310 and 365 nm for dark blue and green phosphorescence emission, respectively. The results demonstrate the long phosphorescence lifetimes of 1.97 and 0.62 s and the high absolute photoluminescence quantum yields of 17.4% and 15.6%. These results show that the obtained RTP materials have potential prospects as information coding and phosphorescent anti-counterfeiting.

Host-guest systems of carbon dots (CDs) embedding in matrix with room-temperature afterglow (RTA) are of great importance for various applications, but so far rather limited due to relaying on high-energy ultraviolet (UV) excitation, monochromatic afterglow emission, or harsh synthesis. Herein, PTA materials (PASP@BA) with UV/visible light dual-mode excitation are prepared via one-step heat treatment of polyaspartic acid (PASP) and boric acid (BA). The RTA colors of PASP@BA display a significant bathochromic shift from blue to yellow as the excitation wavelength increases from 254 to 420 nm under ambient condition. Impressively, the visible-light-activated ultralong RTA can last for about 7 s by naked eye under ambient conditions. By correlating photophysical properties with structural characterization results, it is concluded that the polycrystalline boron oxide matrix and covalent B–C bonds can effectively suppress non-radiative transitions and stabilize the triplet excited state of CDs by restricting molecular motion and isolating environmental quenchers, thus facilitating the generation of long afterglow. More interestingly, the afterglow color can be also tuned by dynamic varying in B–C bond density and CDs dimensions. Finally, practical applications of such photo-responsive systems in multi-level information anti-counterfeiting and encryption are further demonstrated.

Visible light is safer for health and deeper penetrable than ultraviolet light, yet the development of room temperature afterglow (RTA) materials with visible-light-excitation remains an enormous challenge. A universal approach to acquire the activation of color-tunable carbon dots (CDs)-based RTA composites (CDs/BA) with excitation-dependent feature under visible light excitation with the highest quantum efficiency up to 54.27 % and long lifetime of 530 ms, surpassing most of nonmetallic afterglow materials under excitation of Vis-light. Meanwhile, CDs/BA exhibit color-tunable RTA properties from cyan to red at excitation of 420 nm via alteration in carbon source types. Benefiting by these excellent properties, CDs/BA composites were applied in advanced information security and anti-counterfeiting fields. Such a strategy provides an important way for the development of high-efficiency visible-light-excited RTA materials with color-tunability.

Carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) have been studied extensively for room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) due to their low cost, good biocompatibility and crosslink-enhanced emission effect. Although considerable achievements have been reached in recent years, it is still a formidable task to prepare long-lived RTP CPDs. Herein, the Arg-CPDs was introduced into a rigid boric acid (BA) matrix to enhance the RTP lifetime of the Arg-CPDs@BA composites. The nitrogen-rich arginine framework integrated with phosphorus doping enhances spin-orbit coupling and accelerates the intersystem crossing and promotes the generation of triplet excitons. The formed C B covalent bond between Arg-CPDs and rigid B 2 O 3 matrix restricts the vibration and rotation of CPDs, thus inhibiting the non-radiative transition of the triplet excitons and making the composite exhibit a relatively long-lived RTP emission of 983 ms (18 s for naked eyes). It was nearly seven times longer than that of the matrix-free Arg-CPDs. Besides, the potential applications in anti-counterfeiting and white light-emitting diodes were demonstrated.
