Sea spray aerosol (SSA) contains abundant anions, which significantly impact CO 2 fixation at the air-water interface in atmospheric microdroplets. However, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. Herein, we simulated SSA using nebulized saltwater microdroplets and investigated the common SSA anions (Cl − , Br − , I − , and SO 4 2− ) intervening in the abiotic carboxylation of succinate with CO 2 at the interface. The combination of online and offline analyses revealed that the SSA anions inhibited the interfacial carboxylation of succinate, with an inhibitory effect inversely proportional to their concentration. Kinetic studies confirmed that the carboxylation reaction occurred at a relatively high rate in the presence of the SSA anions. Furthermore, a mechanistic investigation was performed, which showed that SSA anions inhibited the interfacial carboxylation of succinate by modulating the interfacial electric field. Additionally, the formation of adducts between halogen anions from SSA and succinate suggests a potential pathway for the accumulation of succinate in the early marine environment. This work advances our understanding of air-water interfacial chemistry and provides new insights into prebiotic chemistry in the marine atmosphere.

Ammonia is a promising carbon-free energy carrier, but is currently synthesized industrially under harsh conditions. Synthesizing ammonia using lower temperatures and pressures could therefore improve its prospects as a chemical means to store and transport energy. Here we report that alkali and alkaline earth metal imides function as nitrogen carriers that mediate ammonia production via a two-step chemical looping process operating under mild conditions. Nitrogen is first fixed through the reduction of N 2 by alkali or alkaline earth metal hydrides to form imides and, subsequently, the imides are hydrogenated to produce NH 3 and regenerate the metal hydrides. The oxidation state of hydrogen therefore switches between −1 (hydride), 0 (H 2 ) and +1 (imide and NH 3 ). Late 3d metals accelerate the reaction rates of both steps. The chemical loop mediated by BaNH and catalysed by Ni produces NH 3 at 100 °C and atmospheric pressure.

All-inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have become the most promising next generation luminescent materials due to their excellent properties. However, there are many nonradiative recombination defects in colloidal perovskite NCs, which reduce their luminescent efficiency and stability. In this work, we incorporated the alkaline-earth (AE) metal ion Ca 2+ into NCs to further improve the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of CsPbBr 3 and CsPbBr 1 I 2 NCs. The PLQY of green-emitting CsPbBr 3 and red-emitting CsPbBr 1 I 2 NCs can be boosted to 72.3% and 78.7%, respectively by doping the optimum amount of Ca 2+ . At the same time, we adopted a simple and low-cost one-pot method to integrate Ca 2+ -CsPbX 3 (X 3 = Br 3 , Br 1 I 2 ) NCs and superhydrophobic silica aerogels (AG), not only retaining the high PLQY of NCs, but also greatly improving the water, heat and light stability. Finally, the green-emitting Ca 2+ -CsPbBr 3 @AG, red-emitting Ca 2+ -CsPbBr 1 I 2 @AG composites and the blue chip as the light sources show a wide color gamut that accounts for 129% of the NTCS 1953 value and nearly 100% of the Rec.2020 value. Additionally, we fabricated white light-emitting diode (WLED) devices by coupling Ca 2+ -CsPbBr 1 I 2 @AG composites with commercial YAG:Ce 3+ phosphors on blue chips, obtaining bright white light with a color rendering index (CRI) up to 92.2.

The protective effects of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors were highlighted in the treatment of kidney diseases, especially acute kidney injury (AKI). However, the currently available HDAC inhibitor cannot be delivered to the kidney properly because of its poor solubility in aqueous solutions. Therefore, calcium alginate (Ca-ALG) microspheres were proposed as microcarriers for the delivery of HDAC inhibitors in this study. First, Ca-ALG microspheres with high sphericity were obtained by a single-emulsion microfluidic strategy. Then, we selected suitable Ca-ALG microspheres for HDAC inhibitor loading by analyzing the swelling ratio and the release property using different parameters. Besides, thermal stimulation will change the drug release property of Ca-ALG microspheres in in vitro experiments. Furthermore, the HDAC inhibitor-loaded microspheres were delivered to the kidney by renal subcapsular injection for evaluating the treatment effects in mice with ischemia-reperfusion-induced AKI. The in vivo results showed that the HDAC inhibitor-loaded Ca-ALG microspheres could effectively reduce the renal regional inflammatory response and macrophage infiltration. Taken together, we proposed a promising therapy with an effective kidney-targeted drug delivery for the treatment of AKI.

This paper reported a crystallization – dissolution – interface mineralization (CDIM) method on synthesizing calcium carbonate (CaC) and calcium phosphate (CaP) inorganic microcapsules with good biocompatibility and good pH sensitivity. The method is based on mineralization at the ethanol/water interface. The microcapsules were formed in a few seconds and did not need post treatment for removing the templates. The diameters of the microcapsules can be controlled by the size of the crystal clusters regulated by stirring time. Carboxyfluorescein (CF) molecules as model drugs were encapsulated inside the capsules after coating with FeIII–polyphenol tannic acid (TA) films. The pH sensitive carboxyfluorescein molecule releasing behavior was investigated. The lower pH caused faster and thorough release of CF. The CDIM method can be applied for fabricating other inorganic microcapsules, which holds great potential for drug delivery.
