Schiff base cross-linked dialdehyde cellulose/gelatin composite aerogels as porous structure templates for oleogels preparation

Yucheng Zou,Aiping Zhang,Lin Lin,Sobhy Ahmed El-Sohaimy,Yang Li,Liangru Wu,Hui Zhang

Recently, biopolymer-based structured oil has emerged to substitute saturated and trans -fats. Herein, the porous biopolymeric networks with the cellular structure were developed with cross-linked dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) and gelatin to prepare oleogels. The determination of aldehyde content in the DAC molecular chain revealed a high degree of oxidation of cellulose. The FTIR data showed the covalent cross-linking bond between the DAC and gelatin. The covalent cross-linking between DAC and gelatin promoted the composite aerogel (DG) to form a porous three-dimensional network structure with enhanced thermal stability , mechanical properties, and water stability. The DAC/gelatin composite aerogel with 5 wt% DAC (DG-5) exhibited the highest porosity (91.27 %) and lowest pore diameter (10.52 μm) with greater capillary force, resulting in a high oil absorption capacity of 11.24 g/g and oil holding capacity of 55.57 %. The DG oleogels containing 6 % thymol in the oil phase showed good antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus for 24 h. This work provides a facile and promising strategy for developing oleogels by DAC/gelatin cross-linked conjugates as aerogel templates for oil structuring.

Schiff Base-Crosslinked Tetra-PEG-BSA Hydrogel: Design, Properties, and Multifunctional Functions

Yuanyuan Qu,Jinlong Li,Xin Jia,Lijun Yin

Hydrogel network structures play a crucial role in determining mechanical properties and have broad applications in biomedical and industrial fields. Therefore, their rational design is essential. Herein, we developed a Schiff base-crosslinked hydrogel through the reaction of Tetra-armed polyethylene glycol with aldehyde end groups (Tetra-PEG-CHO) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) under alkaline conditions. In addition, the Tetra-PEG-BSA hydrogel showed a rapid gelation time of around 11 s, much faster than that of the GLU-BSA, HT-BSA, and GDL-BSA hydrogels. It had high optical transmittance (92.92% at 600 nm) and swelling ratios superior to the other gels in different solutions, maintaining structural integrity even in denaturing environments such as guanidine hydrochloride and SDS. Mechanical tests showed superior strain at break (84.12 ± 0.76%), rupture stress (28.64 ± 1.21 kPa), and energy dissipation ability (468.0 ± 34.9 kJ·m−3), surpassing all control group hydrogels. MTT cytotoxicity assays indicated that cell viability remained >80% at lower concentrations, confirming excellent biocompatibility. These findings suggest that Tetra-PEG-BSA hydrogels may serve as effective materials for drug delivery, tissue engineering, and 3D printing.

Electrospun nanofiber membranes based on dialdehyde pullulan polysaccharide and schiff base crosslinked lysozyme for antibacterial packaging of blueberries

Yu Ma,Ru Tian,Yudong Song,Chenghui Yin,Hui Huang,Yongxin Li

Pullulan polysaccharide electrospun nanofiber membrane is promising in food packaging field. However, there are still some limitations in its application, due to its high hydrophilicity, poor basic properties (water and thermal stability, mechanical properties, etc.) and weak bioactivity. To solve these problems, pullulan polysaccharide was first oxidized to dialdehyde pullulan polysaccharide (DPul). Then the DPul was prepared into electrospun nanofiber membrane (DPul-M). The DPul-M was used as a green crosslinking agent, and the aldehyde group on the DPul-M and the amino group of lysozyme were reacted with each other by Schiff base to form an imine bond (C=N), thus crosslinking lysozyme to the membrane and obtaining the dialdehyde pullulan polysaccharide-lysozyme nanofiber membrane (DPul-LZ-M). After crosslinking, the basic performance of the membrane was improved and the hydrophobicity was greatly enhanced. The water contact angles can reach to a maximum angle of 108°. Meanwhile, lysozyme crosslinked on the membranes significantly enhanced the antibacterial activity of the nanofiber membrane. It can achieve the highest antibacterial rate of 95.69 % and 95.46 % against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. The preservation test indicates that the DPul-LZ-M can extend the shelf life of blueberries. The results showed that DPul-LZ-M has good application prospects in active food packaging.

Schiff base crosslinking based dialdehyde-chitosan/gelatin/tea polyphenol electrospun nanofibrous membranes with excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activity for food packaging

Yu Ma,Ru Tian,Yudong Song,Mengxiao Liu,Jie Li,Zhichun Bi,Hui Huang,Yongxin Li

Chitosan and gelatin (GEL) are the two most common substrates for green active food packaging. However, chitosan is difficult to solute in water, and gelatin-based films are limited in application by gelatin’s poor active and basic properties. In this work, chitosan was modified to dialdehyde-chitosan (DCS), then it was blended with gelatin and doped with tea polyphenol (TP). Finally, the above materials were electrospined and Schiff-base crosslinked to dialdehyde-chitosan/gelatin/tea polyphenol nanofibrous membranes (DCS/GEL/TP-M) with antibacterial and antioxidant properties and good basic properties. The crosslinking process greatly enhanced the basic properties of the membranes, the addition of TP improved the activity of the membranes, with the inhibition of E. coli and S. aureus up to 91.08 % and 89.31 %, respectively, the scavenging of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl radical (DPPH) free radicals of 85.43 %, and practical preservation experiments showed that the prepared film successfully extended the shelf life of strawberries to 7 days at 25 ℃. The results show that the DCS/GEL/TP-M have good application prospects in active food packaging.

Photo-induced adhesive carboxymethyl chitosan-based hydrogels with antibacterial and antioxidant properties for accelerating wound healing

Qingcong Wei,Yaxing Wang,Huan Wang,Li Qiao,Yuqin Jiang,Guanglei Ma,Weiwei Zhang,Zhiguo Hu

Designing adhesive hydrogel wound dressings with inherent antibacterial and antioxidant properties is desirable to treat cutaneous full-thickness injuries in clinical care. Herein, a series of photo-induced Schiff base crosslinking-based adhesive hydrogels with promising traits are designed and prepared through Diels-Alder (DA) reactions between functional groups-grafted carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and a photo-responsive polyethylene glycol (PEG) crosslinker. The quaternary ammonium and phenol groups in modified CMCS endows hydrogels excellent antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Upon UV (365 nm) irradiation, the generated o -nitrosobenzaldehyde from the photo-isomerization of o -nitrobenzyl in PEG derivative can subsequently crosslink with amino groups on tissue interfaces via Schiff base, endowing the hydrogel with well adhesiveness. Additionally, the hydrogel exhibits good BSA adsorption capacity, cytocompatibility and hemostatic property. The in vivo full-thickness skin defect study on mice indicates that the multi-functional hydrogel with considerable collagen deposition and vascularization capacities can be an effective and promising adhesive dressing for improving wound healing.

Schiff base cross-linked dialdehyde β-cyclodextrin/gelatin-carrageenan active packaging film for the application of carvacrol on ready-to-eat foods

Haiying Cui,Qun Cheng,Changzhu Li,Myat Noe Khin,Lin Lin

The construction of films has often been devoted to loading active substances to improve biological activity in recent years. However, the positive impacts on packaging properties by establishing a cross-linking reaction between the load materials and the substrate are frequently overlooked. The essence of this work was to cross-linked gelatin-based film with κ-carrageenan and dialdehyde β-cyclodextrin inclusion (IC/DA-β-CD) and the functionalities were also investigated. β-cyclodextrin was oxidized with sodium periodate to introduce aldehyde groups. The hydrophobic cavity was not disrupted and the modified cyclodextrin exhibited solubilization of carvacrol. In addition, the introduction of aldehyde group improved the dispersion effect of cyclodextrin in water, but the solid particles were more likely to gather when exposed to the air. Electrostatic complexation of gelatin and κ-carrageenan significantly ( p  < 0.05) enhanced the tensile strength (from 10.85 to 26.54 MPa), surface water contact angle (WCA) from 97.16 to 110.08° and thermal stability of the film. Contrarily, the elongation at break rate decreased significantly and the antibacterial activity was not potent. The crosslinked IC/DA-β-CD further improved the mechanical properties, and excellent barrier capabilities of the film. Consequently, the WCA and thermal stability were further enhanced as well as the antioxidant capacity and antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes (the eradication rate reached 99.989%). Release experiments demonstrated cross-linked film was more suitable for fatty foods with excellent packaging application ability for ready-to-eat (RTE) ham. Based on the promising properties, the cross-linked film has great deal of potential as RTE active packaging.

Schiff base crosslinked graphene/oxidized nanofibrillated cellulose/chitosan foam: An efficient strategy for selective removal of anionic dyes

Cuiyun Liu,Hongyu Liu,Yingli Zheng,Jie Luo,Chang Lu,Yuxin He,Xinchang Pang,Rama Layek

A versatile foam based on Schiff base crosslinking of oxidized nanofibrillated cellulose (ONFC) with amino modified graphene oxide (NGO) and chitosan (CS) was prepared for the efficacious selective removal of anionic dyes. (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) was employed as a surface modifier to yield an amino modified graphene oxide (NGO). Meanwhile, ONFC was obtained via a periodate oxidation process to produce dialdehyde groups. Thus, the Schiff base crosslinking of ONFC with NGO and CS enabled to be readily accomplished, producing a versatile NGO/ONFC/CS foam. Systematical characterizations confirmed the successful covalent crosslinking and formation of NGO/ONFC/CS foams. Selective adsorption of Allura Red (AR) and orange G (OG) over cationic dye methylene blue (MB) by NGO/ONFC/CS was confirmed. It was found the maximum adsorption capacities of AR and OG at 303 K were 416.7 and 300.5 mg g −1 , while it was 14.60 mg g −1 for MB. Thus, the new Schiff base crosslinked NGO/ONFC/CS paves the way for developing versatile graphene based foams in the applications of water treatment.

Oxidized Alginate Hydrogel-Based Derivatives with Optimized Features for Cell Culture Scaffold

Twizeyimana Etienne,Zhang Shuang,Mukerabigwi Jean Felix,Ge Zhishen

Advances in designing smart hydrogels with the structures and properties similar to the interior of extracellular matrix have aroused the interest of researchers as promising cell support scaffolds in the field of tissue engineering. In this study, a novel hydrogel system is developed from natural polysaccharides that are sodium alginate, gelatin and carboxymethyl chitosan through Schiff base cross-linking mechanism. By mixing these three components, the hydrogel system with tunable strength and gelation time was obtained and abbreviated as oxACG hydrogel. Moreover, the obtained hydrogels are biocompatible and can sustain the growth and proliferation of Hela cells after 24 h incubation. The experimental results show that the hydrogel possesses a relatively short gelation time that is around 3 min, high gel strength and negligible cell cytotoxicity. The oxACG hydrogel composite exhibited desirable properties, and they can be used as high-performance multifunctional injectable hydrogels in cell therapy.

Injectable, In Situ Self-cross-linking, Self-healing Poly(l-glutamic acid)/Polyethylene Glycol Hydrogels for Cartilage Tissue Engineering

Shuang Li,Dongyang Niu,Tuhe Shi,Wentao Yun,Shifeng Yan,Guohua Xu,Jingbo Yin

Injectable hydrogels have drawn much attention in the field of tissue engineering because of advantages such as simple operation, strong plasticity, and good biocompatibility and biodegradability. Herein, we propose the novel design of injectable hydrogels via a Schiff base cross-linking reaction between adipic dihydrazide (ADH)-modified poly(l-glutamic acid) (PLGA-ADH) and benzaldehyde-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-CHO). The effects of the mass fraction and the molar ratio of −CHO/–NH2 on the gelation time, mechanical properties, equilibrium swelling, and in vitro degradation of the hydrogels were examined. The PLGA/PEG hydrogels cross-linked by dynamic Schiff base linkages exhibited good self-healing ability. Additionally, the PLGA/PEG hydrogels had good biocompatibility with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and could effectively support BMSC proliferation and deposition of glycosaminoglycans and upregulate the expression of cartilage-specific genes. In a rat cartilage defect model, PLGA/PEG hydrogels significantly promoted new cartilage formation. The results suggest the prospect of the PLGA/PEG hydrogels in cartilage tissue engineering.

Fully biobased approach for sustainable flame retardancy, antibacterial and anti-UV modification of silk fabric

Chang Wu,Lin-Xia Lu,Zong-Xing Wu,Xian-Wei Cheng,Jin-Ping Guan

The versatile modification of silk fabric using a fully biobased approach is intriguing. In this study, phytic acid and vanillin, which are plant extracts, were utilized to synthesize reactive vanillin phytate ester for modifying silk fabric to achieve durable flame retardancy, antibacterial and anti-UV performance. The multifunctional properties, thermal resistance, smoke and heat suppression capacity, flame-retardant durability and mechanism of modified silk fabrics were investigated. The vanillin phytate ester imparted high antimicrobial and UV resistance to silk fabric, achieving a 97 % inhibition rate against Escherichia coli and reaching an “excellent” level of UV protection. The modified silk fabric also possessed the self-extinguishing capacity, with a limiting oxygen index value as high as 33.5 %. There was also a significant reduction of 71.7 % in peak heat release and 40 % in smoke release compared with those of the original silk. After undergoing 20 washing cycles, the modified silk fabrics also self-extinguished and passed the vertical burning test, and such good washing resistance was achieved by the Schiff base cross-linking of vanillin phytate ester on the silk fabric. An intumescent flame-retardant mechanism was also identified by char residue analyses, which was driven by the synergistic charring action of phosphate groups and aromatic structures.

All-Natural Injectable Antibacterial Hydrogel Enabled by Chitosan and Borneol

Zhijie Zhao,Xiao Fan,Xinyu Li,Yuwei Qiu,Yunfeng Yi,Yuping Wei,Yong Wang

Hydrogels with intrinsic antimicrobial capabilities based on natural strategies have been studied as a hot topic in biomedicine. Nevertheless, it is highly challenging to thoroughly develop a bacteriostatic natural hydrogel. Borneol as a traditional Chinese medicine possesses a unique broad-spectrum antibacterial activity under a membrane-breaking mechanism. In this study, a range of fully natural antibacterial hydrogels are designed and synthesized via the Schiff base cross-linking of carboxymethyl chitosan and dialdehyde dextran grafted natural borneol. The borneol with three configurations is hydrophilically modified onto dextran to boost its antibacterial activity. Also, the synergism of hydrophilic-modified borneol groups and positively charged ammonium ions of carboxymethyl chitosan make the hydrogels totally constrict the E. coli and S. aureus growth during 24 h. Furthermore, the hydrogels exhibit good in vitro cytocompatibility through cytotoxicity, protein adhesion, and hemolytic tests. In view of the injectability, the hydrogels can be delivered to the target site through a minimally invasive route. In short, this work offers a potential tactic to develop antibacterial hydrogels for the treatment of topical wound infections.

Shikonin delivery strategy through alkali-crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel promotes effective wound healing

Peng Wang,Fanghao Zheng,Min Guo,Kaijun Lei,Zixue Jiao,Zihong Li,Huaiguo Li,Dongwen Liu,Mingfeng He,Zongliang Wang,Peibiao Zhang

Effective wound healing is one of the most concerning health issues worldwide. Adding traditional Chinese herbal ingredients into functional hydrogel materials may be an efficient strategy to promote wound healing. In this study, Shikonin (SHK) was simply introduced into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel to construct SHK/PVA composite hydrogel through alkali crosslinking method. SHK/PVA hydrogel could not only improve cell adhesion and proliferation, but also significantly increase collagen deposition, enhance angiogenesis and reduce inflammatory response, and finally accelerate wound healing in rat skin defect models. Findings from this study indicated that the introduction of SHK would be a crucial candidate for wound healing. Therefore, SHK/PVA hydrogel is expected to provide a new choice for clinical repair and regeneration of acute and chronic wounds.
