Tentacle-like core–shell CoNi2S4/C3N4 bifunctional electrocatalysts for efficient overall alkaline water splitting

Qingfei Li,Nan Li,Mianmian Wu,Guifang Sun,Wenjing Shen,Minghao Shi,Jiangquan Ma

Stable and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts are of great significance for sustainable energy conversion and human society sustainability. However, conventional electrocatalytic materials tend to exhibit high overpotentials and unsatisfactory chemical activities. Herein, we construct novel CoNi2S4/C3N4 nanowires on a nickel foam (NF) electrode as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for alkaline water splitting by a two-step hydrothermal and thermal annealing process. The prepared CoNi2S4/C3N4 electrocatalyst exhibits superior HER (e.g. 40 mV (ηH210)) and OER (e.g. 110 mV (ηO210)) activities in a 1 M KOH electrolyte, which are much smaller than those of bare NF, Co@NF, NiCoO@NF and most reported materials. Furthermore, the stability test at 10 mA cm−2 for 20 h for the CoNi2S4/C3N4 electrocatalyst shows no obvious decay and proves the excellent stability of CoNi2S4/C3N4. In this work, the unique tentacle-like CoNi2S4/C3N4 nanowire nanostructure leads to minimized interfacial resistance and abundant channels during electrocatalysis. Moreover, comprehensive analysis results show that Ni(Co)OOH active sites, which are beneficial for excellent OER activity, partially form on the surface of CoNi2S4/C3N4 during electrocatalysis. Finally, the CoNi2S4/C3N4∥CoNi2S4/C3N4 two-electrode system is constructed and it exhibits a low-voltage water splitting capability of 1.40 V.

Efficient Alkaline Freshwater/Seawater Hydrogen Production via Heterogeneous N-Doped FeMoO4/Mo2N Rod-Shaped Electrocatalysts

Yanxiang He,Meilian Tu,Weijiang Gan,Zhixiao Zhu,Muhammad Mushtaq,Mohammad Al-Mamun,Jianqiu Deng,Hao Yang,Zhongmin Wang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun

Graphical A high-performance heterogeneous N-doped FeMoO 4 -Mo 2 N electrocatalyst was synthesized and applied as HER electrocatalyst in alkaline freshwater and alkaline seawater. Benefiting from the individual properties of both N-doped FeMoO 4 and Mo 2 N, the optimized FeMoO 4 -Mo 2 N electrocatalyst requires low overpotentials of 23 and 29 mV to afford 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH freshwater and seawater electrolytes, respectively. Durable and efficient Fe-based electrocatalysts in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolysis is highly desirable but persists a significant challenge. Herein, we report a durable and robust heterogenous nitrogen-doped FeMoO 4 /Mo 2 N rod-shaped catalyst on nickel foam (denoted NF@FMO/MN) affording hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) low overpotentials of 23/29 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 112/159 mV@100 mA cm −2 in both alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolytes, respectively. These results are significantly superior to the pristine FeMoO 4 catalyst. Theoretical calculations consistently reveals that the combination of N-FeMoO 4 and Mo 2 N effectively reduces water activation energy barrier, modulates the sluggish water-dissociation kinetics and accelerates the hydrogen adsorption process for efficient HER. The enhanced HER performance of the as-designed NF@FMO/MN catalyst is attributed to the in situ hetero-interfacial engineering between N-doped FeMoO 4 and Mo 2 N. This present work nurtures the progress of FeMo-based electrocatalysts in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolysis.

Wenyue Jiang,Bingxin Zhao,Ziting Li,Peng Zhou,Xiaoshuang Chen,Jinping Wang,Rui Yang,Chunling Zuo

Research into cost-effective electrocatalysts for alkaline water and simulated seawater oxidation is paramount for advancing the conversion and storage of renewable energy. In this study, a FeSe 2 /Ni 0·85 Se catalyst with the hollow and ultrathin nanobelts structure is synthesized. The distinctive structure characteristics of FeSe 2 /Ni 0·85 Se heterojunction nanobelts confer exceptional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) properties in diverse electrolytes, including alkaline 1 M KOH and simulated seawater (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl) solutions. The FeSe 2 /Ni 0·85 Se catalyst presents the low overpotentials of 259 and 267 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , along with the Tafel slopes of 33.7 and 65.5 mV dec −1 in two solutions, respectively. Additionally, the FeSe 2 /Ni 0·85 Se catalyst also demonstrates good stability. This exploration introduces a promising strategy for the development of high-performance electrocatalysts in the realm of green energy, marking the significant progress towards sustainable energy solutions.

In situ construction of W-doped Co-P electrocatalyst by electrodeposition for boosting alkaline water/seawater hydrogen evolution reaction

Shaowu Yuan,Yihui Wu,Wenjing Chen,Zhanyuan Xu,Yuxin Wang

The development of an efficient yet cost-effective non-precious electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline water and seawater systems remains a formidable obstacle to the large-scale production of hydrogen energy, stemming from the sluggish kinetics of electron transfer reactions during the HER process. In this article, an amorphous Co-P-W electrocatalyst on nickel foam is prepared using a brief cyclic voltammetry (CV) electrodeposition method. The optimized Co-P-W electrocatalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for HER, which only requires overpotentials of 59 and 143 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline water (1.0 M KOH) and alkaline seawater (1.0 M KOH + natural seawater), respectively, and remarkable stability and durability. The improved HER performance of the Co-P-W electrocatalyst is attributed to the introduction of W, which modulates the electronic structure of Co and P, optimizes the adsorption/dissociation of H 2 O, and reduces the charge transfer resistance of the Co-P electrocatalyst, thus improving the kinetics of the HER. Furthermore, the W-doping significantly enhances the hydrophilicity of the Co-P electrocatalyst, which favors rapid and thorough penetration of electrolytes into the electrocatalyst, facilitating the formation of a highly accessible reaction interface, ultimately resulting in excellent HER activity. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of designing an efficient, durable, and scalable electrocatalyst to significantly boost HER efficiency for practical water electrolysis.

Hydrophilic modified polyphenylene sulfide fabric separator for efficient alkaline water electrolysis

Yunyong Tang,Wen Song,Miao Guo,Guofeng Yang,Kunmei Su,Maliang Zhang,Zhenhuan Li

The separator plays a crucial role in alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) by conducting hydroxide ions and separating gases. Therefore, developing a high-performance AWE separator is of significant importance. This study proposes a method for preparing a hydrophilic polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fabric separator. Firstly, PPS fabric separator undergoes a chloromethylation reaction to graft chloromethyl groups onto its surface, increasing its reactivity. Subsequently, chemical grafting introduces imidazole groups and quaternary ammonium groups to improve hydrophilicity. The modified PPS separator can rapidly conduct hydroxide ions and facilitate gas separation in alkaline solutions. Experimental results show that the modified PPS separator exhibits an area resistance of 0.219 Ω cm 2 in 30 wt % KOH solution at 80 °C, which is a 74.86 % reduction compared to the unmodified separator. Additionally, the bubble point pressure is enhanced by 2.46 %. During alkaline electrolysis experiments in a custom zero-gap electrolyzer, the modified separator demonstrates a current density of 493 mA cm −2 at a voltage of 2 V and maintains the stable performance after 500 h of operation, indicating the excellent electrolytic stability. This study provides a feasible reference for the industrial production of low-resistance, high gas-tightness AWE hydrogen production separators.

MILD ALKALINE HYDROLYSIS IS AN EFFICIENT AND LOW-COST METHOD FOR IMPROVING THE FREE PHENOLIC CONTENT AND HEALTH BENEFIT OF POMEGRANATE PEEL EXTRACT

BENGUO LIU,WEI LI,LIZHI HU,JIAN ZHAO

Pomegranate peel is the main byproduct of pomegranate juice manufacture and is rich in phenolic acids, but most of which exist in the bound form with low bioavailability. A simple, low-cost procedure for releasing phenolic acids from pomegranate peel was developed, which uses a mild alkaline treatment of the peel at room temperature. Results showed that when the peel was treated with 0.5 mM NaOH for 3 h, the concentration of ellagic acid, one of the two main phenolic acids present, almost doubled, while gallic acid, the other main phenolic, which was not found in the free form, was released at a concentration almost twice as high as that of ellagic acid. With the release of the two phenolic acids, the extract of the pomegranate peel showed remarkable increases in their antioxidant activity measured by three different essays. However, more severe alkaline treatment either by extending the hydrolysis time to 6 h or longer, or by using a higher concentration of NaOH (2 mM), resulted in decreases in the phenolic acids, possibly as a result of alkaline-induced degradation, with corresponding decreases in antioxidant activities. These results showed that the mild alkaline treatment process could be a low cost but efficient method that can be used to increase the level of phenolic acids and hence the potential value of pomegranate peel extract. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Pomegranate peel is the main byproduct of pomegranate juice manufacture and is rich in phenolic acids, but most of which exist in the bound form with low bioavailability. A simple, low-cost procedure for releasing phenolic acids from pomegranate peel was introduced in this article, which uses a mild alkaline treatment of the peel at room temperature. The method was practical and the extract could be used as antioxidant and active supplement.

Lignin Valorization: A Novel in Situ Catalytic Hydrogenolysis Method in Alkaline Aqueous Solution

Da Wang,Yuyang Wang,Xiaoyu Li,Lei Chen,Guangci Li,Xuebing Li

In situ catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin is an efficient method for lignin valorization. Herein, a novel in situ lignin catalytic hydrogenolysis technique in alkaline aqueous solution over a NiAl alloy catalyst under mild conditions was systematically suited. Ni served as the active phase and could be exposed by etching Al atoms with alkaline aqueous solution. Meanwhile, H2 resources could be in situ generated and easily arrived at the adjacent exposed Ni sites to be activated. The in situ lignin hydrogenolysis system exhibits attractive depolymerization results under mild conditions, with an 86.8% conversion degree and 18.9 wt % yield of aromatic monomers at 220 °C, much higher than the traditional hydrogenolysis method using a commercial Raney Ni catalyst under high pressure external H2. The mechanism studies with lignin model compounds suggest that alkaline aqueous solution could promote the cleavage of C–O–C bonds and hinder the hydrogenation of the benzene ring. In addition, a moderate amount of exposed Ni sites as well as rich active hydrogen species are determinant for efficient lignin depolymerization.

Microscopic dissolution process of cellulose in alkaline aqueous solvents and its application in CNFs extraction - Investigating temperature as a variable

Jinping Peng,Yihui Huang,Rongwei Fu,Jinqing Lu,Weiquan Wang,Wentao Zhu,Yuxuan Yu,Fan Guo,Haiyan Mai

The target of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the micro-dissolution process of cellulose in alkaline aqueous solutions and to develop a novel method for extracting cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). Herein, the dissolution process of cellulose in alkaline aqueous solutions will be controlled by varying the temperature, and the undissolved cellulose will be analyzed to reveal the microscopic dissolution process of cellulose, and a novel process for extracting cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) will be developed based on the findings. The crystalline structure of cellulose was gradually disrupted as the dissolution progressed, and the crystal form of cellulose changed gradually from cellulose I to cellulose II during the dissolution process, while all undissolved cellulose crystals remained as cellulose I. Cellulose, after its structure is disrupted during the dissolution process, will inevitably decompose into CNFs, and the microscopic dissolution process of cellulose follows a “top-down” dissolution sequence. The CNFs extraction method developed in this study can extract CNFs with high yield (>60 %) in a stable manner, as well as narrow particle size distribution , high crystallinity (>77 %), and good thermal stability . This study enhances the comprehension of the dissolution process of cellulose and paves a possible way for industrialization of CNFs production.

Deepening surface reconstruction on anodized nickel mesh boosts oxygen evolution under industrial alkaline conditions

Tai An,Qingfeng Jin,Junxia shen,Weitao Zhang,Qian Huang,Cong Chen,Wen Dong,Ronglei Fan,Mingrong Shen

Although the active species induced by surface reconstruction have been extensively studied during oxygen evolution reaction (OER), it is still highly challenging to regulate and promote the reconstruction level to achieve exceptional catalytic activity and stability for realistic alkaline water electrolysis (AWE). Herein, we demonstrated that nickel mesh (NM) treated by a facile electrochemical anodization (ANM) can be easily induced into a deep reconstruction level on surface after activation, attributing to the autologous creation of a porous and amorphous NiO x (OH) y layer. Additionally, the reconstruction level can be promoted by increasing the temperature and alkali concentration of the electrolyte during the activation process. The deeply reconstructed ANM enables excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 284 mV to achieve 10 mA/cm 2 , 132 mV lower than that of the NM. When combined with a Raney Ni cathode, the assembled AWE device working under industrial conditions can implement 400 mA/cm 2 current at a low cell voltage of 1.79 V with a stable operation for 14 days, showing great potential in practical hydrogen production .

Base-hydration-resolved hydrogen-bond networking dynamics: Quantum point compression

Yong Zhou,Danping Wu,Yinyan Gong,Zengsheng Ma,Yongli Huang,Xi Zhang,Chang Q Sun

We show phonon spectrometrically that the unprecedented H 2 Ö:   ↔   :Ö:H – compression resolves the performance of the base solution networks with “:” being the electron lone pair of oxygen. At hydration, LiOH, NaOH, KOH molecules dissolve each into a :Ö:H – hydroxide and cations of Li + , Na + , and K + , respectively. The cations serve as charge centers to polarize the neighboring water molecules and raise the solution skin stress (or surface tension). The :Ö:H – tetrahedron adds, however, three lone pairs and one bonded H + proton to the solution matrix, turning the initially 2N lone pairs into 2N   +   3 and the 2N bonded H + into 2N   +   1 with an additional O 2– anion. This hydration process breaks the conservation of the 2N lone pairs and protons with two extra lone pairs that only can form a H 2 Ö:   ↔   :Ö:H – super hydrogen bond (super-HB) with strong repulsivity. In addition to the H O bond of the :Ö:H – featured at 3610   cm −   1 , the internal H 2 Ö:   ↔   :Ö:H – compression has an identical effect of mechanical compression, shortening the O:H nonbonds and stiffening their phonons from below 200   cm −   1 to the above. Meanwhile, compression lengthens the network H O bonds and softens their phonons from above 3150   cm −   1 to below. The network H O bonds elongation decreases their energy from ~   4.0 to ~   2.7   eV at hydration, which heats the solution as one often observes. The H 2 Ö:   ↔   :Ö:H – super-HB compressor and the alkali cation polarizor form the keys to the base hydration networks and the properties.

A thin and flexible composite membrane with low area resistance and high bubble point pressure for advanced alkaline water electrolysis

Yiwen Liao,Guoxiong Deng,Li Ding,Haihui Wang

Green hydrogen plays a pivotal role in the decarbonizing process. Hydrogen production by alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is the most promising way for large-scale hydrogen production because of the merits of high-efficient and cost-effective. In the AWE system, the membrane is used to conduct hydroxide ions and block the interpenetration of hydrogen and oxygen, which is a crucial component. However, the current membranes are limited by either the high area resistance or inadequate gas-blocking ability. Herein, we proposed a thin (∼268 μm) and flexible composite membrane featuring both low area resistance (∼0.14 Ω cm 2 in 30 wt% KOH solution) and high bubble point pressure (BPP, ∼24 bar). When applied in alkaline water electrolysis, the composite membrane with the commercial NiMo and NiFe catalysts shows a current density of 2.3 A cm -2 at the voltage of 2 V in 30 wt% KOH solution at 80 °C, surpassing the capabilities of the ZIRFON UTP 500 membrane. Notably, the in-situ gas purity tests reveal an impressive hydrogen purity of ∼99.997%, much higher than that of the state-of-the-art membranes. Additionally, the stability tests conducted more that 600 h at 80 °C without performance attenuation highlight the membrane's competitiveness and promising commercial prospects.

High-Performance Alkaline Freshwater and Seawater Hydrogen Catalysis by Sword-Head Structured Mo2N-Ni3Mo3N Tunable Interstitial Compound Electrocatalysts

Zhixiao Zhu,Li Luo,Yanxiang He,Muhammad Mushtaq,Jieqiong Li,Hao Yang,Zeba Khanam,Jing Qu,Zhongmin Wang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun

Realizing efficient electrocatalysts is a stepping stone toward achieving high-performance alkaline water/seawater electrolysis, but remains a crucial challenge. Herein, heterogeneous Mo 2 N/Ni 3 Mo 3 N electrocatalysts on nickel foam (denoted MN-NMN/NF) that is stable and active for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both alkaline water/seawater are demonstrated. The optimized MN-NMN09/NF achieves an ultralow HER overpotential of 11 mV@10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 m KOH electrolyte, which is not only superior to the benchmark Pt/C catalysts but also the best reported ever among NiMo-based electrocatalysts in an alkaline environment. Successively, the optimized MN-NMN09/NF electrocatalyst can drive HER current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm −2 using low overpotentials of 9.37 and 123 mV in 1.0 m KOH seawater electrolyte, which remains durable after 120 h long-term electrolysis at a constant current density of 500 mA cm −2 . In situ Raman analysis reveals that the enhanced performance is attributed to the accelerated H 2 O adsorption and OH dissociation processes on the MN-NMN surfaces. Theoretical analysis further confirms that rapid H 2 O adsorption-dissociation kinetics and H adsorption-conversion kinetics on the Ni 3 Mo 3 N/NiOOH and Ni 3 Mo 3 N/MoO x surfaces result in boosted HER capability. This work depicts a significant potential for designing stable and efficient hydrogen production electrocatalysts for both alkaline water and seawater electrolysis.
