Vanadate Crystals with an Enhanced Birefringence and a Broadened Transparency Spectrum through Controlled [VO3]∞ Chain Arrangements and Alkali Metal Cation Introduction

Jinlei Cheng,Die Xu,Juanjuan Lu,Feng Zhang,Xueling Hou

The vanadate (VO) polyhedron offers a compelling avenue for exploring birefringent materials within the infrared frequency range. Among many potential building blocks, the implementation of [VO3]∞ chains demonstrated great potential as effective birefringent functional units. In this article, we successfully synthesized the Li0.8Na0.2CsV2O6·H2O compound, which exhibits a remarkable birefringence of 0.134 at 546.1 nm, as confirmed by the experiment. Notably, the introduction of alkali metals in this compound led to a significantly shorter cutoff edge at 340 nm. Through a comprehensive investigation, Li0.8Na0.2CsV2O6·H2O has the shortest UV cutoff edge among all vanadates, whose birefringences are larger than 0.1, to the best of our best knowledge. This finding underscores the application potential of this novel material as a birefringent crystal.

Alkali metal cation adsorption–induced surface polarization in polymeric carbon nitride for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production

Lijun Hu,Yi-Meng Du,Rui Liu,Shisheng Yang,Hongliang Tang,Xue-Zan Yin,Qianxiang Xiao,Xiangke Wang,Hongqing Wang

Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) generation on the catalyst surface from oxygen is an electron-demanding process, making the construction of an electron-rich surface highly advantageous. In this study, a localized electric field was observed on the surface of polymeric carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) when alkali metal cations were adsorbed onto it. These fields effectively inhibited surface carrier recombination and extended their lifespan, thereby enhancing H 2 O 2 production. As a result, g-C 3 N 4 achieved a superior H 2 O 2 yield of 2.25 mM after 1 h in a 0.25 M K + solution, which was 2.06 times greater than that (1.09 mM) achieved in a pure solvent. Notably, the increase in photocatalytic efficiency showed a remarkable dependence on ion species. At low concentrations, H 2 O 2 generation efficiency was in the order of Li +  < Na +  < K +  < Rb +  < Cs + . However, after optimizing the ion concentration, the highest H 2 O 2 production was achieved in a solution containing K + instead of Cs + . Molecular dynamics simulations and temperature-dependent photocatalysis experiments revealed that the synergistic interaction between adsorption energy and adsorption distance was crucial in governing the extent to which alkali metal cation adsorption enhanced g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. This study provides theoretical insights for the design of materials for electron-demanding photocatalysis and aids in understanding variations in photocatalytic behavior in natural waters.

Wide band gap thiophosphates ASrPS4 (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs): cation size effect induced successive structural transformation

Yi Huang,Junben Huang,Yong Zhang

Metal thiophosphates have aroused much research interest due to their structural chemistry and possible applications as infrared functional materials. In this study, five quaternary Sr-based alkali metal thiophosphates ASrPS4 (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) were obtained. Their structural comparison shows that their symmetry undergoes transformation from tetragonal (I41/acd) to monoclinic (P21/c) to orthorhombic (Pnma) system, which is induced by the cation size effects and coordination features of different alkali metal cations. The experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that the band gaps of all title compounds are large, namely 3.6–3.9 eV (experimental results) and 3.78–4.12 eV (HSE06). Theoretical analyses indicate that the [PS4] group could be regarded as a good unit for designing wide band gap compounds, and the birefringence of NaSrPS4 is 0.08 at the fundemental 1064 nm wavelength, which shows that it may be a potential infrared birefringent material.

Impact of the alkali cation on the electrocatalytic oxidation of urea and benzyl alcohol on nickel electrode

Wenbin Zhang,Shungao Yin,Xiaogang Li,Guanlian Xu,Tao Xie

The effect of electrolyte alkali metal cations (Li + , Na + , or K + ) on the electro-oxidation of urea and benzyl alcohol on NiOOH catalyst has been investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in the presence of an electrolyte containing LiOH, NaOH, or KOH. The catalytic activity toward the electro-oxidation of urea and benzyl alcohol was found to increase in the sequence Li +   <   Na +   <   K + . This activity's difference is partly caused by different surface blockage abilities by OH–M + (H 2 O) x (M: Li, Na, K) clusters, which is similar to many electrocatalytic reactions on Pt reported previously, additionally, incorporation of various cations to the catalyst may induce the activities difference as well.

Amine-functionalized MIL-101 sorbents modified with alkali metal cations for enhanced CO2 capture and electroreduction conversion

Min Zhang,Jieshu Zhou,Xiulan Guo,Xiangke Zeng,Lan Shi,Tingting Zhang,Yunfei He,Xintao Zhou,Shaoyun Shan,Kaili Yao

Mitigating the rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) levels presents one of humanity’s significant challenges. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising materials for CO 2 capture, owing to their unique chemical structure and operability. Many researchers have demonstrated that amination treatment can further enhance CO 2 adsorption performance. However, the relatively low capture efficiency and limited cycling stability of these materials continue to impede their development. Alkali metal cations exhibit high CO 2 adsorption capacities and can be incorporated into the MOF structure to significantly enhance CO 2 capture capacity and cycling stability. Therefore, we synthesized novel alkali metal ion-doped M−NH 2 −MIL−101 (M = Li, Na, K) adsorbents using a post-modification method, successfully anchoring alkali metal cations to carboxylate group sites within the MOFs framework. The integration of microscopy, spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations has confirmed that the introduction of alkali-metal cations enhances the adsorption between MOFs and CO 2 , thereby providing stronger adsorption sites. Experimental studies have demonstrated that doping with 0.1 M K + (denoted as 0.1 K-NH 2 -MIL-101) exhibits a higher CO 2 adsorption capacity (8.2mmol g −1 ) at 298 K, approximately 3.2 times greater than that of NH 2 -MIL-101. Furthermore, it maintains an adsorption capacity of 7.4mmol g −1 after the sixth adsorption–desorption test, indicating excellent cyclic stability. Additionally, 0.1 K-NH 2 -MIL-101 was employed for in situ capture and electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction. By integrating 0.1 K-NH 2 -MIL-101 with a Bi-based catalyst to enhance the local CO 2 concentration, the Faraday efficiency for the formic acid product was effectively increased from 67 % to 85 %.

Mass Transport-Dependent C–C Bond Formation for CO Electroreduction with Alkali Cations

Wen Yan,Tiantian Wu,Jia Liu,Zhe Zheng,Ming Ma

Electrolyte cation identity has been reported to influence the multicarbon (C2+) selectivity in CO2/CO electroreduction. However, most of the previous work for cation size effect is based on H-cell configurations, which may inadvertently distort the underlying mechanism of cation effect due to mass transport limitations, particularly for CO reduction. Here, using GDE-type flow electrolyzers, we report that the selectivity of total C2+ products on Cu is independent of alkali cation identity (Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+) in the absence of the CO transport limitation. Notably, a high concentration of strongly hydrated cation (such as Li+) inhibits the total C2+ formation in CO reduction, whereas total C2+ selectivity is retained upon increasing concentrations of weakly hydrated cation (such as K+). Further investigations reveal that the CO coverage at a low cation concentration is almost independent of the cation identity, but the CO coverage at highly concentrated cations strongly relies on the alkali cation identity.

Probing the hydration friction of ionic interfaces at the atomic scale

Zibo Li,Qian Liu,Deliang Zhang,Yin Wang,Yuge Zhang,Qiang Li,Mingdong Dong

Despite the extensive studies conducted in exploring friction in the aqueous environment, the mechanism of hydration friction remains not well understood. Herein, we directly probed hydration friction on mica-electrolyte interfaces with different hydrated alkali cations through a combination of three-dimensional atomic force microscopy and friction force microscopy. The atomic scale imaging of the hydration layers at the mica surface in different electrolyte solutions clearly revealed a correlation between the alkali cations and the structure of the hydration layers. Our detailed analysis showed that the hydration force was much higher at high ionic concentrations than that at low concentrations. The hydration friction coefficient was found to follow the trend K+< Na+< Li+< Cs+, which contrasts with the Hofmeister series, indicating that the hydration friction depends not only on the hydration strength of the alkali cations but also on the arrangement of the alkali cations at the interface. The results of this study provide deep insights into the origins of hydration friction, with potential implications for the development of new boundary lubrication in aqueous media.

Facile Synthesis of Size-Controlled ZSM-22 Zeolite along the [001] Direction via Two-Step Crystallization

Le Wang,Pengyu Niu,Hongjuan Xi,Xiaoyan Chen,Congbiao Chen,Zhongyi Ma,Litao Jia,Bo Hou,Debao Li

A facile method was developed to precisely control the particle size of nanosized ZSM-22 zeolite with a range of 80–850 nm via a two-step crystallization procedure. Based on the ZSM-22 crystallization process, inhibiting or promoting the crystal growth and the fusion of nanocrystals are crucial to obtain specific sized ZSM-22. For this purpose, the crystallization process of ZSM-22 was quenched after 12 h to obtain abundantly viable ZSM-22 nanocrystals formed on the aluminosilicate amorphous particles. In the recrystallization process, the viable nanocrystals continued to crystallize and the dissolved amorphous particles released Si and Al species as nutrients. After further simplifying the procedures, some additives were used at the very beginning of the recrystallization procedure. Not only small crystals can be formed but also the crystal length of ZSM-22 along the [001] direction varies from 80 to 850 nm. We have systematically investigated the influencing factors such as alkali metal cations and the alkalinity of the synthesis system on the mechanism of ZSM-22 zeolite nucleation and growth and the morphology and yield of products. We report a facile synthetic route for size-controlled nanosized ZSM-22 by decoupling its nucleation and growth processes for the first time.

Unraveling the Effect of Alkali Cation on Fe Single Atom Catalysts with High Coordination Number

Yecheng Li,Songjie Meng,Zihong Wang,Hehe Zhang,Xin Zhao,Qingshun Nian,Digen Ruan,Lianfeng Zou,Zhansheng Lu,Xiaodi Ren

Fe single atom catalysts (SACs) with high coordination number have emerged as high-performance catalysts for the conversion of CO2 to CO. However, the influence of alkali cation at the catalyst-electrolyte interface has not yet been understood clearly. Here, we investigate the role of the various alkali metal cations (Na+, K+, Rb+) on catalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) behavior on high coordination number Fe SACs (FeN5 and FeN6) obtained from a facile hard template method. We find that larger cations can greatly promote CO2RR and such effects are enhanced with increasing cation concentration. Nevertheless, hydrogen evolution side reaction (HER) on co-existing N heteroatom sites will be worsened. This trade-off highlights the importance of manipulating the reactive sites for SACs. From theoretical simulation and in-situ spectroscopy results, we confirm the functioning mechanism of cations on Fe SACs lies in the enhancement of the adsorption of key intermediates through direct coordination and indirect hydrogen bonding effects. With the rationally designed Fe SACs (FeN5) and the electrolyte condition (1 M KOH), our flow cell test demonstrate a maximum Farady efficiency of CO (FECO) of approximately 100% at 100 mA cm-2. This research provides significant insights for future SACs and electrolyte design.

Alkali cations modulating electrostatic field of frustrated Lewis pairs for CO2 electroreduction in neutral medium

Shaonan Zhang,Yuandong Yan,Qian Zheng,Shicheng Yan,Zhigang Zou

Carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) on highly reactive frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) is a promising avenue for producing high-energy-density fuels from renewable energy. Exploring the effects of alkali metal ions on FLPs electrostatic field in neutral medium is a crucial knot for highly active FLP catalyst development. Here, leveraging the distinct electrochemical stability of In-OH and Bi-OH, we create stable Lewis pairs on the Bi 0.5 In 0.5 O y shell layer of Bi 0.5 In 0.5 O y @Bi 3 In 5 core-shell assembly with coordinatively unsaturated Bi-O Vs sites (Lewis acids) and In-OH (Lewis bases) to detect alkali metal ions effects. We find that K + is able to help electrochemically stable FLPs firstly capture and stabilize protons to protonate to Bi–H Lewis acid and In–OH 2 Lewis base due to their strong steric electrostatic field; then CO 2 is captured and activated by the protonated FLPs to produce formate with high selectivity. Whereas, Li + , Na + , and Cs + will inhibit CO 2 RR and promote the competing hydrogen evolution reaction due to Li + , Na + , and Cs + breaking steric electrostatic field of FLPs by inhibiting Bi-H formation. Our results verify that modulating electrostatic field of frustrated Lewis pairs by appropriate alkali cations is a promising catalyst design concept for highly selective CO 2 RR.

Alkali-cation-enhanced benzylammonium passivation for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells fabricated through sequential deposition

Jie Cao,Junke Jiang,Nan Li,Yifan Dong,Yongheng Jia,Shuxia Tao,Ni Zhao

Two-step sequential deposition has been shown to be an effective method to improve the quality of perovskite films and performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, we have developed a two-step sequential deposition method, incorporating an alkali cation (e.g., Cs+) and a benzylammonium (BA+) cation into formamidinium (FA+)-based perovskite thin films for highly efficient and stable PSCs. By combining experimental characterization and theoretical calculations, we demonstrate that not only the co-incorporation of alkali cations and BA+ significantly improves the crystallinity and orientational growth of perovskite films, but also Cs+ enhances the passivation effect of BA+ ions on the perovskite surface via strengthening bonding between BA+ and perovskites. In particular, inclusion of Cs+ in BA+-passivated perovskites promotes the preferred orientation of defect-free (1 0 0) facets. As a result, we observed remarkable improvements in both open-circuit voltage and fill factor of formamidinium-benzylammonium-cesium (FABACs)-based PSCs, achieving a champion efficiency of 22.5%. More importantly, the FABAC perovskite films demonstrated superior resistance to humidity and photo-thermal stress, and the perovskite-based devices (without encapsulation) retained over 95% of the initial efficiency after exposure to air for 2 months. Manipulating the perovskite composition by combining small alkali and large organic cations in two-step sequential deposition provides an efficient and facile approach to realize highly efficient and stable perovskite devices.

Lattice Modulation of Alkali Metal Cations Doped Cs1−xRxPbBr3 Halides for Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

Yanan Li,Jialong Duan,Haiwen Yuan,Yuanyuan Zhao,Benlin He,Qunwei Tang

The crystal structure of cesium lead halide (CsPbX 3 , X = I, Br, Cl) determines its charge-carrier trap state and solar-to-electrical conversion ability in inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, the compositional engineering of inorganic CsPbBr 3 perovskite by means of doping with various alkali metal cations is studied. The lattice dimensions and energy levels of Cs 1- x R x PbBr 3 (R = Li, Na, K, Rb, x = 0–1) halides are optimized by tuning Cs/R ratio. Arising from promoting effects of alkali metal cations doped perovskite halides such as lattice shrink, crystallized dynamics, and electrical-energy distribution, a maximum power conversion efficiency as high as 9.86% is achieved for hole transporting layer-free Cs 0.91 Rb 0.09 PbBr 3 tailored solar cell owing to the suppressed non-radiative losses and radiative recombination. Furthermore, the all-inorganic Cs 0.91 Rb 0.09 PbBr 3 solar cell without encapsulation remains 97% of initial efficiency when suffering persistent attack by 80% RH in air atmosphere over 700 h, which is in comparable with state-of-the-art organic–inorganic hybrid and all-inorganic PSC devices. Employing alkali metal cations to modulate perovskite layers provide new opportunities of making high-performance inorganic PSC platforms.
