PEDOT:PSS coated Te (PC Te) nanorod/PEDOT:PSS composite films were prepared by a drop-casting technique. H 2 SO 4 treatment was employed to enhance thermoelectric (TE) properties of the composite films. The addition of PC Te nanorods increased both the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient of the composite films. An optimized power factor of 141.9 μW/mK 2 was obtained for the film containing 90 wt% PC Te nanorods treated with 12 M H 2 SO 4 at room temperature , which was 2.75 times as high as that of the untreated composite film, corresponding to the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of 204.6 S/cm and 83.27 μV/K, respectively. XPS and GIWAXS analysis revealed the removal of insulating PSS units and the rearrangement of PEDOT chains after the H 2 SO 4 treatment. Finally, a 9-leg TE generator prototype was fabricated using the optimized composite film. The maximum output power and area output power density produced from the prototype were 47.7 nW and 57.2 μW/cm 2 , respectively, at the temperature difference of 40 K.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) functionalized Te (PF-Te) nanorods were in situ synthesized. A simple and efficient vacuum-assisted filtration method was employed to integrate the PF-Te nanorods with PEDOT:PSS to form PEDOT:PSS/PF-Te composite films. By varying the content of PF-Te nanorods, the Seebeck coefficient of the composites increases from 15.6 to 51.6 μV/K, while the electrical conductivity decreases from 1262 to 122.4 S/cm. A maximum power factor of 51.4 μW/mK 2 is obtained from a sample containing 70 wt% PF-Te nanorods at room temperature. An 8 single-leg flexible thermoelectric generator prototype was fabricated using the as-prepared PEDOT:PSS/PF-Te composite film containing 70 wt% PF-Te on a polyimide substrate with Ag electrodes. The prototype produced an output voltage of 2.5 mV at a 13.4 K temperature difference between human body and the environment.

Firstly, tellurium (Te) nanorods with a high Seebeck coefficient have been integrated into a conducting polymer PEDOT/PSS to form PEDOT/PSS/Te composite films. The Seebeck coefficient of the PEDOT/PSS/Te (90 wt.%) composite films is ~191 μV/K, which is about 13 times greater than that of pristine PEDOT/PSS. Then, H 2 SO 4 treatment has been used to further tune the thermoelectric properties of the composite films by adjusting the doping level and increasing the carrier concentration. After the acid treatment, the electrical conductivity of the composite films has increased from 0.22 to 1613 S/cm due to the removal of insulating PSS and the structural rearrangement of PEDOT. An optimized power factor of 42.1 μW/mK 2 has been obtained at room temperature for a PEDOT/PSS/Te (80 wt.%) sample, which is about ten times larger than that of the untreated PEDOT/PSS/Te composite film.

In this work, single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/PEDOT:PSS coated Te nanorod (PC-Te) composite films were prepared by a simple vacuum assisted filtration method, and H 2 SO 4 treatment was employed to improve the thermoelectric performance of the composite films. The addition of SWCNTs apparently improved the electrical conductivity while reduced the Seebeck coefficient of the composite films, resulting in a reduction of the power factor. After treated with H 2 SO 4 , the electrical conductivity of the composite films was further improved, and the Seebeck coefficient decreased slightly. As a consequence, an optimized power factor of 104 μW/mK 2 (corresponding to the electrical conductivity of 332 S/cm and Seebeck coefficient of 56 μV/K, respectively) was obtained for the sample containing 70 wt% SWCNTs at 300 K. A flexible thermoelectric generator prototype was fabricated to demonstrate the output properties. The open circuit voltage and maximum output power delivered from the prototype were 5.6 mV and 53.6 nW, respectively, at a temperature difference of 44 K.

Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia has attracted widespread attention because of its mild reaction conditions, low energy consumption, and no greenhouse gas generation, but suffers from low ammonia production rate and Faraday efficiency. Here, sulfur-modified silver telluride nanorods (S–Ag 2 Te NRs) have been synthesized as high-efficiency catalysts for the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia. The sulfur modification would offer higher adsorption energy for nitrogen intermediates and more active sites for the hydrogenation of nitrogen to ammonia. Therefore, the S–Ag 2 Te NRs show excellent electrocatalytic performance with an NH 3 yield of 26.44 μg h −1 mg −1 cat. and Faradaic efficiency of 17.48%, which is much higher than that of Ag 2 Te NRs. This work has opened an exciting sulfur-modified strategy to design effective catalysts with diverse morphologies for electrochemical ammonia synthesis.

A nanoplatform based on Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) and tellurium nanorods (TeNRs) was developed for combined chemo-photothermal therapy guided by H 2 O 2 -activated near-infrared (NIR)-II fluorescence imaging. Polypeptide PC 10 AGRD-modified TeNRs and Ag 2 S QDs were co-encapsulated in 4T1 cell membrane to prepare a nanoplatform ( [email protected] ). Ag 2 S QDs and TeNRs in the [email protected] were used as a fluorescence probe and photosensitizer , and a chemotherapeutic prodrug and quenching agent to quench the fluorescence of Ag 2 S QDs, respectively. After the [email protected] was specifically targeted to the tumor site, the TeNRs were dissolved by the high concentration of H 2 O 2 at the tumor site to light up the fluorescence of Ag 2 S QDs for NIR-II fluorescence imaging. In addition, the generated toxic TeO 6 6− molecules decreased ATP production by selective cancer chemotherapy, which is beneficial for photothermal therapy. The elevated temperature due to photothermal therapy in turn promoted the chemical reaction in chemotherapy. In vitro and in vivo toxicity results showed that the [email protected] possesses high biocompatibility. Compared to single photothermal therapy and chemotherapy, the synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy can effectively suppress the growth of 4T1 tumor. This all-in-one nanoplatform provides a boulevard for the combination therapy of tumors guided by NIR-II fluorescence imaging. Statement of significance NIR-II fluorescence imaging shows the characteristics of low tissue absorption, reflection, and scattering, which can greatly reduce the influence of autofluorescence in vivo . However, the non-negligible effect of autofluorescence is still observed in fluorescence imaging in vivo . Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a strategy of controlled release of fluorescence for accurate imaging and tumor therapy. Here, Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) with NIR-II fluorescence emission and good photothermal conversion efficiency are used as a fluorescence probe and photosensitizer, and tellurium nanorods (TeNRs) are used as a chemotherapeutic prodrug and quenching agent to quench the fluorescence of Ag 2 S QDs. This multiple nanoplatform provides an inspiration for the combination therapy of tumor guided by NIR-II fluorescence imaging.

Herein, we designed and constructed MoS 2 @Co 1.11 Te 2 /Co-doped nitrogen carbon dodecahedron with Te nanorods (Co-NCD-T) by rational structure engineering. The as-synthesized MoS 2 @Co 1.11 Te 2 /Co-NCD-T composite served as a bifunctional catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction and triiodide reduction reaction. The incorporation of Te nanorods provided additional charge transport channels and subsequently accelerated the electron transport between the electrode and electrolyte. The synergistic effect between Co 1.11 Te 2 and MoS 2 further enhanced the catalytic activity. The MoS 2 @Co 1.11 Te 2 /Co-NCD-T electrode catalyst showed an overpotential of 124 mV when the current density was 10 mA·cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 49 mV·dec −1 in an alkaline medium. The assembled solar cell exhibited a superior conversion efficiency of 9.00%, significantly higher than Pt (7.32%). The proposed strategy based on rational structure engineering is expected to facilitate the fabrication of hybrids for multi-functional applications.

Nanoparticles containing elemental tellurium (Te) have been aroused extensive attention in biomedical applications. However, the ideal synthesis methods and effective anti-cancer strategies of Te nanoparticles remain great challenges. In this study, genetically engineered polypeptide (PC 10 ARGD)-capped Te nanorods (P-TeNRs) was in situ synthesized. The excellent dispersion of P-TeNRs with average lengths of 25.2 ± 4.65 nm and diameters of 6.5 ± 0.83 nm were confirmed by TEM. PC 10 ARGD was integrated onto the surface of Te nanorods to enhance the stability and biocompatibility of P-TeNRs. P-TeNRs exhibited the excellent photothermal conversion performance under irradiation of NIR laser and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generating capacity under ultrasound (US) irradiation, which can achieve photothermal therapy and sonodynamic therapy of tumors. Compared with single photothermal therapy and sonodynamic therapy, the results of in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the combination therapy has a synergistic effect on breast 4T1 tumors. In addition, the results of in vivo toxicity assay suggested that synthesized P-TeNRs presented negligible toxicity. These results demonstrate that this P-TeNRs can be engineered as a novel theranostic nanoplatform for synergistic photothermal-sonodynamic therapy of tumors.

With great progress in the development of nanozymes, the effect of size, composition and structure on the catalytic activity of nanozymes have been studied extensively, while the effect of phase has rarely been reported. Herein, phase-engineered RuTe 2 nanorods are synthesized with different phase structures and peroxidase (POD)-like activities, which enables an in-depth understanding of their structure-activity relationship. Amorphous RuTe 2 (a-RuTe 2 ) nanorods exhibit superior POD-like activity, which is 3.77 times higher than that of their crystalline counterpart (c-RuTe 2 nanorods). The amorphous phase composed of a large amount of disordered atoms endows the a-RuTe 2 nanozyme with impressive performance. Significantly, given many POD-like nanozymes also show oxidase (OXD)-like activities, the interferences of O 2 limit their applications in colorimetric assay. The proposed a-RuTe 2 nanorods were found to possess negligible OXD-like activity. As a proof-of-concept, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was constructed utilizing a-RuTe 2 nanorods as labels for the detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). This a-RuTe 2 nanorods-based ELISA possesses a low detection limit of 32.6 pg mL −1 , which is at least one order of magnitude lower than that of conventional ELISA based on natural horseradish peroxidase. This work provides new insights into the design of high-performance nanozymes based on phase engineering.

Te(IV) reduction to Te(0) is a detoxification process in bacteria. Elemental Te nanostructures are new materials, however, the functions of them, such as adsorption ability, have not been fully explored. Shinella sp. WSJ-2 is a highly Te(IV)-resistant bacterium with a MIC of 8 mmol/L. It was able to rapidly reduce 0.3 mmol/L Te(IV) to Te nanorods (TeNRs) within 28 h, and its Te(IV) reduction ability was relatively stable after 14 cycles repeatedly. The size of TeNRs ranged from 50 to 120 nm. The surface of TeNRs was mainly enveloped with proteins and lipids. Moreover, the biogenic TeNRs were capable of removing multiple dyes and metals and were effectively recycled with 100 mmol/L NaCl. Adsorption equilibrium isotherms showed that the maximum adsorption amounts were 618.8, 1076.8, 496.3, 179.3, 58.7 and 275.3 mg/g for Methylene Blue , Azure B, Malachite Green, Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. In conclusion, this is the first evidence that the genus Shinella is involved in Te(IV) reduction. The strong sorption of cationic dyes and metals onto TeNRs is probably due to the electrostatic interaction. This study showed the potential of Shinella sp. WSJ-2 in the bioremediation of toxic Te(IV) and adsorption removal of multiple dyes and metals by biogenic TeNRs.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease, in which inflammatory macrophages play a crucial role by secreting a large number of proinflammatory factors to aggravate inflammatory response. In addition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are abundant in hypoxic joints, inducing chondrocyte apoptosis and causing irreversible bone destruction. In this work, we synthesized hyaluronic acid-modified platinum-tellurium nanorods (HPT) as a photothermal agent to target RA joints, ablating inflammatory macrophages and scavenging ROS in the microenvironment. Hyaluronic acid can specifically bind to the CD44 receptors, which are over-expressed on the surface of inflammatory macrophages, achieving active targeting and improving therapy effectiveness. Under the irradiation of an 808 nm laser, thermal energy produced by HPT, which has high photothermal conversion efficiency is sufficient to induce apoptosis of inflammatory macrophages. Simultaneously, platinum particles on the surface of tellurium nanorods can effectively remove a variety of ROS, reducing oxidative stress and alleviating inflammatory response in RA joints. Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice had been used to study the therapeutic potential of HPT. The results revealed that the clinical scores in CIA mice injected with HPT and irradiated with a near-infrared laser were significantly reduced. The inflammatory response was also obviously relieved, when compared with CIA mice injected with PBS. Micro-CT imaging revealed that bone erosion was visibly reduced in the HPT + Laser group. These results demonstrate that multifunctional HPT is promising to serve as a therapeutic platform for the treatment of RA.
