Carbonized ZIF-8 incorporated mixed matrix membrane for stable ABE recovery from fermentation broth

Zhihao Si,Di Cai,Shufeng Li,Changwei Zhang,Peiyong Qin,Tianwei Tan

Recently, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has been recognized as one of the most potential doping particles for pervaporation separation of organics because of its unique pore structure and high surface area. However, in this work, ZIF-8-based mixed matrix membrane (MMM) was found to have poor stability in separating acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation broth due to the organic acids caused the degradation of ZIF-8 framework. To improve the stability of ZIF-8-based MMM in practical application, ZIF-8-derived nanoporous carbon (ZNC) was prepared via direct carbonization and used to replace ZIF-8 in MMM. Results indicated the acid-stability, specific surface area and pore volume of ZNC were all remarkably improved compared with those of ZIF-8. The ZNC-based MMM showed high hydrophobicity and good compatibility between particles and polymer. More attractively, during 100 h of continuous operation for ABE recovery from fermentation broth, ZNC incorporated MMM exhibited a stable performance with an average total flux of 1870 g m −2  h −1 and a n -butanol separation factor of 20.

Snowflake-shaped poly(3-thiophenemalonic acid) combined with carbonized ZIF-8@ZIF-67 hollow polyhedra for sensitive electrochemical detection of metronidazole

Yafeng Jin,Fangming Han,Tao Wang,Haofu Shi,Xiaobo Li,Li Yang,Na Chen,Kaifeng Yang,Xinyue Song,Guangri Xu

Developing a facile and effective assay method is crucial due to the potential harm of metronidazole (MNZ) antibiotics to both human health and the environment. Herein, snowflake-shaped poly(3-thiophenemalonic acid, 3-TPA) combined with a carbonized core–shell-type ZIF-8@ZIF-67 (C-ZIF-8@ZIF-67) hollow polyhedra modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE), denoted as C-ZIF-8@ZIF-67/P3TPA/GCE, was fabricated by electropolymerization followed by the electrodeposition strategy. The resulting sensor demonstrates a significant electrocatalysis effect for the reduction reaction of MNZ, exhibiting a broad linear range (0.1–20, 20–800 μM) with a low limit of detection (LOD, 3S/N) of 0.024 μM. Furthermore, it has been successfully applied to determine MNZ in tablets and lake water. A synergistic effect between P3TPA and C-ZIF-8@ZIF-67 is elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Consequently, this research introduces a sensitive and effective method for monitoring MNZ in real samples.

Carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogel with high-density crack microstructures inspired from the multi-tentacles of octopus for ultrasensitive flexible sensing microsystem

Jiaji Yue,Ying Huang,Yilin Teng,Ruichen Fan,Chao Li,Yanna Lv,Yehan Tao,Jie Lu,Jian Du,Haisong Wang

Constructing high-density contact-separation sites on conductive materials highly determines the sensitivity of flexible resistance-type sensors relying on the crack microstructures. Herein, inspired from the multiple-tentacle structures on octopus, we demonstrated a sort of novel carbonized ZIF-8@loofah (CZL) as conductive material to develop ultrasensitivity flexible sensor, in which the carbonized ZIF-8 nanoparticles (~100 nm) served as tentacles. Originating from the formation of high-density contact-separation sites, the fabricated CZL-based strain sensor delivered ultrahigh sensitivity of GF max  = 15,901, short response time of 22 ms and excellent durability over 10,000 cycles. These features enable the sensor with efficient monitoring capacity for complex human activities, such as pulse rate and phonation . Moreover, when CZL was assembled into triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), CZL-based TENG can effectively convert the irregular biomechanical energy into electric energy, providing sustainable power supply for the continuous operation of the sensing micro-system. Our findings established a novel platform to develop high-performance self-powered sensing systems of physiological parameter of human inspired from the nature.

Confinement Effects in Carbonized ZIF-Confined Hollow PtCo Nanospheres Enable the Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Ming Ge,Han Li,Xiaorong Zhu,Yanjun Feng,Miao Wang,Ding Cui,Hu Yang,Shengming Li,Jie Zheng,Jianfeng Ju,Xiaolei Chen,Xiaolei Yuan

Confinement effects in highly porous nanostructures can effectively adjust the selectivity and kinetics of electrochemical reactions, which can boost the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). In this work, carbonized ZIF-8-confined hollow PtCo nanospheres (PtCo@carbonized ZIF-8) were fabricated using a facile strategy. A monodisperse confined region was successfully prepared, and the dispersion of the PtCo nanoparticles (NPs) could be precisely regulated, allowing for the effective tuning of the confined region. Thus, the precise regulation of the catalytic reaction was achieved. Importantly, hollow PtCo NPs were prepared using a method based on the Kirkendall effect, and their forming mechanism was systematically investigated. Because of the confinement effects of carbonized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), the crystal and electronic structures of the PtCo NPs were able to be effectively tuned. Our electrochemical results show that PtCo@carbonized ZIF-8 composites manifest a higher mass activity (1.4 A mgPt–1) and better stability compared to commercial Pt/C.

Reaction Kinetics and Mass Transfer Synergistically Enhanced Electrodes for High-Performance Zinc–Bromine Flow Batteries

Jiayi Li,Zeyu Xu,Maochun Wu

Zinc–bromine flow batteries (ZBFBs) hold great promise for grid-scale energy storage owing to their high theoretical energy density and cost-effectiveness. However, conventional ZBFBs suffer from inhomogeneous zinc deposition and sluggish Br2/Br– redox kinetics, resulting in a short cycle life and low power density. Herein, a multiscale porous electrode with abundant nitrogen-containing functional groups is developed by growing zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 in situ on graphite felts, followed by a facile carbonization process to simultaneously tackle both the challenges. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that nitrogen-containing functional groups exhibit a high adsorption energy toward zinc atoms, while the microstructures promote pore-level mass transport, thereby resulting in compact and uniform zinc deposition. In the meantime, the electrode boosts the Br2/Br– reaction kinetics due to its high catalytic activity and large surface area. As a result, the ZBFBs equipped with optimized electrodes at both negative and positive sides can operate at an ultrahigh current density of 250 mA cm–2 while maintaining an energy efficiency of 68.0%, far surpassing that with pristine graphite felts (50.7%). Remarkably, the battery exhibits excellent cycling stability over 2000 cycles without obvious decay. This study provides a simple yet effective method for developing high-performance electrodes to tackle the critical challenges in ZBFBs, thereby promoting the commercialization of this promising energy storage technology.
