Osteoinductive biomaterials have emerged as promising platforms for bone regeneration. Nevertheless, conventional calcium phosphate-based systems exhibit suboptimal mechanical properties, particularly under load-bearing conditions, which severely restricts their clinical applicability in critical-sized defect repair. Here, a carbon-based scaffold fabricated through a 3D printing-pyrolysis strategy, featuring osteoinductive coralloid nanostructures on its surface is reported. The scaffold demonstrates a specific strength of 237.5 kN·m kg −1 , surpassing that of commercial orthopedic implants. Notably, the scaffold shows intrinsic osteoinductive properties through successful ectopic bone formation in gluteus maximus, a phenomenon attributed to its nanotopography-mediated activation of mechanotransduction pathways via Yes-associated protein (YAP) nuclear translocation. The scaffold outperformed titanium alloys in repairing both femoral bone defects and cranial bone defects in vivo. Its bone repair efficiency can be further improved by a biomimetic mineralization process. This work highlights the potential of a robust carbon scaffold with a nanostructured surface for osteoinductivity, which will lead to the development of future biomaterials for bone repair.

Construction of three-dimensional (3D) heat-conductive network in polymer matrix is essential to effectively transport heat in thermal management materials, but the preparation process remains challenging. In this study, a continuous 3D interconnected filler network was designed and fabricated by incorporating 1D carbon nanotubes (CNT) into 3D wood-derived carbon scaffold (CS), using natural rubber (NR) as a model matrix. The CS/CNT/NR composite exhibited high thermal conductivity (1.1 W m −1 K −1 ) at 1.67 vol% CNT loading, corresponding to high specific thermal conductivity enhancement (TCE) of 444 %. Importantly, a synergistic effect between CS and CNT was revealed, which played a pivotal role in forming the heat percolation network. These results demonstrate that CS/CNT/NR composite has potential applications in the field of thermal management materials. Compared with similar NR-based thermal management materials, the unique 3D interconnected structure of CS/CNT/NR composite ensures high-speed heat transport. Moreover, the use of biomass materials is an effort devoted for promoting renewable materials and sustainable environment. This work provides new insights into the biomimetic design of efficient 3D filler structure and expands the utilization of wood structure in thermal management materials for efficient heat dissipation.

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are regarded as a competitive next-generation energy storage device. However, their practical performance is seriously restricted due to the undesired polysulfides shuttling. Herein, a multifunctional interlayer composed of paper-derived carbon (PC) scaffold, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles , graphene, and graphite sheets is designed for applications in LSBs. The porous PC skeleton formed by the interweaving long-fibers not only facilitates fast transfer of Li ions and electrons but also provides a physical barrier for the polysulfide shuttling. The secondary Fe 3 O 4 @graphene component can reduce the polarization, boost the attachment of polysulfides , and promote the charging-discharging kinetics. The outer graphitic sheets layers benefit the interfacial electrochemistry and the utilization of S-containing species. The efficient obstruction of polysulfides diffusion is further witnessed via in situ ultraviolet-visible characterization and first-principles simulations. When 73% sulfur/commercial acetylene black is used as the cathode, the cell exhibits excellent capacity retention with high capacities at 0.5 C for 1000 cycles and even up to 10 C for 500 cycles, an ultrahigh rate capability up to 10 C (478 mAh g −1 ), and a high areal-sulfur loading of 8.05 mg cm −2 . The strategy paves the way for developing multifunctional composites for LSBs with superior performance.

The strategic construction of heterostructures centered around Fe 2 P is proven to be effective for improving its performance in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and zinc–air batteries (ZABs). In this study, SbZn is strategically employed to construct a novel Fe 2 P/SbZn heterostructure on N,P-doped carbon scaffolds, serving as an efficient electrocatalyst for the ORR in ZABs. Through a one-step pyrolysis of a Fe, Sb, P-incorporated zeolitic imidazolate framework, the Fe 2 P/SbZn@PNC catalyst is successfully synthesized. This catalyst demonstrates high ORR activity in alkaline media, achieving a half-wave potential of 0.936 V and a limiting current density of 6.18 mA cm −2 , both significantly surpassing those of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. When applied in zinc–air batteries, the Fe 2 P/SbZn@PNC-based ZABs deliver a higher peak power density and superior long-term cycling stability compared to the Pt/C benchmark. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Fe 2 P/SbZn interface drives charge redistribution, optimizing the adsorption/desorption of oxygen intermediates and reducing the rate-determining energy barrier in ORR, thus enhancing catalytic activity. This innovative heterostructure provides new avenues for designing efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage.

Precious metal phosphides have attracted considerable research interest for electrocatalysis in recent years, but it remains an open question how to design such electrocatalysts to facilitate the gas-evolving water electrolysis with high activity and durability at low metal loading. In this work, rhodium phosphide nanoparticles are attached on a nitrogen/phosphorus-doped carbon cloth matrix (Rh2P-N/P-CC) with an ultralow Rh loading of 39.2 μg cm–2 to be used as an excellent bifunctional electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). By rationally integrating the merits of its two components, as-reported Rh2P-N/P-CC exhibits impressive HER catalytic performance, outperforming benchmark Pt/C catalysts at only 7.85% equivalent of Pt; meanwhile, Rh2P-N/P-CC largely surpasses the RuO2 catalyst during OER catalysis in alkaline media. As a bifunctional electrocatalyst, Rh2P-N/P-CC catalyzes stable electrochemical water splitting of 200 mA cm–1 under 1.7 V. This work reports a feasible strategy to integrate three-dimensional electrodes for high performance water electrolysis.
