Study on deposition characteristics and mechanism of waxy oil under the effect of drag reducer

Qianqian Lv,Chuanshuo Wang,Xiaoxuan Xu,Xiaofang Lv,Wen Xia,Jinru Shang,Aokai Qin,Qianli Ma,Yang Liu,Shidong Zhou,Jimiao Duan

Drag reducers have become a common method for reducing resistance and increasing transportation efficiency in pipeline transportation of waxy crude oil. The prominent heat transfer weakening effect of drag reducers may impact the deposition of waxy oil. This study uses cold finger experiments to clarify wax deposition characteristics and mechanisms in drag-reduced waxy oil. The wax deposition mass and components are examined under different temperatures, stirring rates, drag reducer dosages, and types. The results show that a low dosage of drag reducer at high stirring rates can simultaneously reduce the total wax deposition and the overall wax content in high waxy oil. 5 mg/kg drag reducer can reduce total wax deposition by up to 15.66% and overall wax content by 7.26%. A systematic investigation reveals that adding drag reducers changes the carbon number distribution in the wax deposition layer. This change is similar to the effect of increasing wall temperature. The heat insulation and transfer weakening effects of drag-reducing fluids are likely the main mechanisms inhibiting the increase in wax deposition mass and wax content. The heat insulation effect reduces the temperature gradient near the pipe wall, while the transfer weakening effect decreases radial heat transfer. However, under low stirring rates and high dosages, the deposition mass of the drag-reduced waxy oil system increases, with the adhesive effect of polymer-type drag reducers becoming more pronounced. These findings provide a foundation for optimizing drag reducer usage in waxy crude oil pipelines, potentially leading to significant energy savings and improved operational efficiency.

Selective utilization of formaldehyde stabilizing additive and methoxy groups in lignin for the production of high-carbon-number arenes

Lin Dong,Zhiqiang Fang,Qianbo Yuan,Yong Fan,Yong Yang,Ping Wang,Shixiong Sheng,Yanqin Wang,Zupeng Chen

Many strategies have been proposed to produce arenes from lignin as liquid fuel additives. However, the development of these methods is limited by the low yield of products, low atom utilization, and inefficient lignin depolymerization. Herein, we develop an energy-efficient synthetic method for the production of high-carbon-number arenes from sustainable lignin with a total yield of 23.1 wt%. Particularly, high carbon number arenes are obtained by fully utilizing the formaldehyde stabilizing additive and the methoxy group in lignin. The process begins with the reductive depolymerization of formaldehyde-stabilized lignin, followed by transmethylation between lignin monomers over Au/Nb 2 O 5 catalyst, and the Ru/Nb 2 O 5 -catalyzed hydrodeoxygenation. This work demonstrates the potential of value-added arenes production directly from lignin.

Controllable CO2-responsiveness of O/W emulsions by varying the alkane carbon number of a tertiary amine

Shanshan Dai,Yuxin Suo,Dongfang Liu,Peiyao Zhu,Jihe Zhao,Jiang Tan,Hongsheng Lu

A series of CO2-responsive oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions were prepared by introducing hydrophobic tertiary amines (TAs) with varying alkane carbon numbers (ACNs) into the emulsion stabilized by sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). TAs are converted to bicarbonate salts upon bubbling of CO2, which can form ion pairs with SDBS via electrostatic interaction, and then disrupt the stability of the emulsion. The reversible switch can be triggered by the removal of CO2. The ACN of TA, the concentration of SDBS/TA, the bubbling time of CO2, and the number of cycles are taken into account in order to study the controllable mechanism of these CO2-responsive emulsions. Because of the improved miscibility with oil, the ion pairs with TAs of larger ACNs can much more easily adhere to the oil phase, and then speed up the rupture rate of the oil droplets. The corresponding demulsification process is tracked by studying the interfacial tension, the zeta potential of the droplets, and microscope snapshots of all the systems. The UV-vis spectrophotometer analysis of the water phase and the 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) test are further designed to comprehend the significance of ACNs and the solubility product of the formed ion pairs.

Volume Expansion Behavior of CO2 in Various Types of Hydrocarbon Systems Under Reservoir Conditions

Yu Zhang,Ziyang Zuo,Mingyuan Wang,Weifeng Lyu,Ke Zhang,Jiahao Gao

As a process fluid in oil reservoirs, carbon dioxide plays a dominant role in enhanced oil recovery by increasing volume and decreasing interfacial tension. To study the volume expansion behavior of a CO2–oil system under reservoir conditions, ten hydrocarbon components with carbon numbers ranging from 8 to 26 were selected to represent crude oil. Systems of CO2with normal alkanes, cycloalkanes, and aromatic hydrocarbons were measured using a self-assembled high-pressure visible cell, with a temperature range of 313.15 K to 353.15 K and a pressure up to 25 MPa. Experimental results demonstrate that pressure and temperature significantly influence the relative volumetric expansion behavior. The expansion rate exhibits a positive correlation with pressure, whereas it shows a negative correlation with temperature. Among different molecular configurations, normal alkanes exhibit the most pronounced swelling effect. This study establishes that the volumetric expansion behavior of crude oil under CO2exposure is predominantly governed by n-alkane components with carbon numbers less than 16. In the heavy hydrocarbon (carbon number > 16) and CO2system, the influence of hydrocarbon structure and carbon number on the expansion extent is considerably reduced. This paper delivers critical theoretical foundations for elucidating the microscopic interaction mechanisms in CO2enhanced oil recovery and optimizing injection parameter strategies.

Effect of carbon numbers and structures of monosaccharides on the glycosylation and emulsion stabilization ability of gelatin

Yangyi Zhang,Jiamin Xu,Ting Zhang,Lina Tao,Yinghua Nie,Xichang Wang,Jian Zhong

Herein, the effect of saccharide glycosylation by nine monosaccharides on bovine bone gelatin for the stabilization of fish oil-loaded emulsions was explored. The gelatin modification was analyzed and then the emulsifying properties of monosaccharide-modified gelatins were analyzed at pH 9.0 and 3.0. The results demonstrated that glycosylated gelatin structure, droplet stability, creaming stability, and liquid-gel transition time were dependent on monosaccharide carbon numbers, monosaccharide structures, and solution pH. Glycosylation modification of gelatins did not obviously change the emulsion droplet stability at pH 9.0, whereas it increased the emulsion droplet stability at pH 3.0. Glycosylation modification of gelatins did not obviously change the emulsion creaming index values (5.1%–8.4% at pH 9.0 and 25.8%–33.1% at pH 3.0). Three-carbon and four-carbon monosaccharides glycosylation significantly increased emulsion liquid-gel transition times. This work provided useful information to understand the effects of carbon numbers and structures of monosaccharides on the protein modification.

Carbon type and quantity regulate soil free-living nitrogen fixation through restructuring diazotrophic community

Qian Zhao,Jipeng Wang,Qingqing He,Huajun Yin

Free-living nitrogen fixation (FLNF) is a ubiquitous and significant source of new nitrogen in ecosystems. This process requires a substantial amount of energy, and as a result, the input of labile carbon to soils may enhance FLNF. Here, we aim to explore the precise influence of different types and quantities of carbon on FLNF. We conducted experiments where sugars, carboxylic acids, and amino acids (common labile carbon inputs via root exudates) were added to cropland and forest soils. We monitored the changes in FLNF rate and diazotrophic community in response to these additions. Our findings revealed that sugars and carboxylic acids significantly stimulated FLNF rate, with an increase of up to three orders of magnitude, while amino acids either restricted FLNF or had no effect. When a mixture of sugars and carboxylic acids was added, the stimulation of FLNF was not observed until a threshold quantity of carbon was reached, indicating competition between diazotrophs and other microbes. Furthermore, the enhanced FLNF rate following carbon addition was attributable to shifts in diazotrophic community composition (e.g., increased abundance of Paenibacillus , a genus frequently used as biofertilizers), rather than to changes in the overall abundance of diazotrophs (reflected by nifH gene copy number). Our findings highlight the significant role of carbon type and quantity in regulating soil FLNF, partly through restructuring the diazotrophic community. The results have implications for predicting the response of rhizosphere FLNF to shifts in root exudation under environmental changes and can contribute to the application of diazotrophic biofertilizers in sustainable agriculture.
