Adsorption of ammonia nitrogen from the synthetic wastewater on chemically modified carbon felt

JinSong Ri,Yimin Xie,Mingliang Wang,Chunlin Guo,Dengao Chang,CholJin Sin,SongChol Ri

To remove ammonia nitrogen from synthetic wastewater, carbon felt (CF) was modified with potassium chlorate, sulfuric acid, sodium persulfate, and sodium hydroxide. The specific surface area and the pore volume of CF after modification individually increased 1.27 and 1.06 times more than pristine CF, resulted in the improvement of ammonia nitrogen adsorption efficiency superior to pristine CF. Under the optimal conditions—specifically, a dosage of 25 g/L, a synthetic wastewater pH of 5.5, an adsorption time of 240 min, and an initial ammonia nitrogen concentration of 5 mg/L at 25 °C—, the removal efficiency reached 72.8±3.4%, with an adsorption capacity of 0.153±0.013 mg/g. As the initial concentration of ammonia nitrogen increased from 5 mg/L to 200 mg/L, the removal efficiency correspondingly decreased from 72.8±3.4% to 12.5±0.7%, while the adsorption capacity increased from 0.153±0.013 mg/g to 1.052±0.043 mg/g. After seven regeneration cycles at a voltage of 2 V and a charging time of 1 min, the recovery rate of modified CF was 88.1±1.2%, with an ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency of 65.9±1.6%. The adsorption process was described by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, indicating that it is characterized by homogeneous monolayer adsorption primarily driven by chemisorption. The ammonia nitrogen adsorption process on modified CF is exothermic and is characterized by a gradual decrease in adsorption rate.

Shuyan Yu,Huiying Zhang,Congju Li

In this study, MIL-53(Fe) was innovatively incorporated into carbon felt (CF) by growing in-situ using the solvothermal method. MIL-53(Fe)@carbon felt (MIL-53(Fe)@CF) was prepared and used for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). As a new photocatalytic membrane, MIL-53(Fe)@CF photocatalytic membrane has the characteristics of high degradation efficiency and recyclability. Influence of various parameters including MIL-53(Fe)@CF loading, light, electron trapper type, and starting pH on RhB degradation were investigated. The morphology, structure, and degradation properties of MIL-53(Fe)@CF photocatalytic membrane were characterized. Corresponding reaction mechanisms were explored. The results indicated that pH at 4.5 and 1 mmol/L H2O2, 150 mg MIL-53(Fe)@CF could photocatalytically degrade 1 mg/L RhB by 98.8% within 120 min, and the reaction rate constant (k) could reach 0.03635 min−1. The clearance rate of RhB decreased by only 2.8% after three operations. MIL-53(Fe)@CF photocatalytic membrane was found to be stable.Keywords:MIL-53(Fe)@carbon felt;photocatalytic;degradation;rhodamine B

Direct In Situ Vertical Growth of Interlaced Mesoporous NiO Nanosheets on Carbon Felt for Electrocatalytic Ammonia Synthesis

Wei Xiong,Min Zhou,Xiaoyan Huang,Weijie Yang,Da Zhang,Yaokang Lv,Hao Li

Graphical A novel interlaced mesoporous NiO NSs@CF electrochemical catalyst was prepared using a direct in situ vertical growth method, in which NiO formed mesoporous nanosheets with a pore size of 15 nm and a thickness of ∼30 nm. This binder-free electrode exhibited a superior NH 3 yield of 71.3 μg h −1 mg −1 cat. and a FE of 17.9 % at −0.5 V vs. RHE. Metal oxide nanomaterials directly grown on conductive substrates are optimal electrode materials because their structures allow for rapid ion and electron transport and thereby reduce internal resistance in the electrode. The development of such binder-free, self-supporting electrodes is of great significance for applications in electrocatalysis. In this work, a simple hydrothermal in situ self-assembly reaction and annealing process was developed to prepare three kinds of nickel oxide @ carbon felt (NiO@CF) nanocomposites with different morphologies. The influence of different precipitators (strong or weak bases) on the morphology of the resulting nano-sized nickel oxide nanocomposites was investigated. The microstructures of the NiO@CF samples were characterized with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). When ammonia was used as the precipitator, NiO grew vertically on the surface of the carbon felt and formed a mesoporous nanosheet-like structure (NiO NSs@CF). As an electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction ( e -NRR) electrode, the NiO NSs@CF sample showed an excellent NH 3 yield (71.3 μg h −1 mg −1 cat. ) and Faradaic efficiency (17.9 % at −0.5 V vs. RHE) in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 . The good performance was attributed to the vertical interleaved mesoporous sheet-like structure (with the pore size of 15 nm and the thickness of ∼30 nm) and the relatively high concentration of oxygen vacancies. First-principles calculations with strong on-site Coulomb interactions demonstrated that the presence of oxygen vacancy on NiO sample leads to a significantly stronger N binding over the surface, benefiting for the nitrogen gas adsorption and reduction. The e -NRR performance of this binder-free, flexible electrode material is superior to that of other reported nickel-based nanomaterials. This study highlights the potential of such binder-free carbon felt electrodes for use in e -NRR that could meet the needs of industrial production.

One-step environment-friendly process to design fire-resistant superhydrophobic carbon felts with excellent durability and oil–water separation performance

Wang Haitao,Zhang Yunpeng,Xue Fengxin,Bai Wenxia,Shi Xueting,Liu Yanhua,Feng Libang

Nowadays, it has become an imminent challenge of developing a robust and efficient oil/organic solvent absorbing/releasing along with oil–water separating material. Herein, a simple and environment-friendly one-step immersion method is developed for fabricating superhydrophobic carbon felts with extraordinary properties. The as-prepared superhydrophobic carbon felts reveal outstanding durability and stability even exposed to various harsh environments, such as acid, base, salt, organic solvent, and UV light for quite long time. The superhydrophobic carbon felts exhibit excellent fire resistance, and the materials can stand at least 5 times of ethanol-soaking and burning without marked influencing on the superhydrophobicity. Meanwhile, the resultant materials reveal outstanding oil adsorption and oil–water separation performance. The superhydrophobic carbon felt can still absorb 7 times its own mass of cooking oil even after 10 extrusion cycles. Moreover, the oil–water separation efficiency can still reach 98.85% after 10 times of separation. Consequently, the materials can be used in oil/organic solvent collection and oil–water separation successfully. Therefore, the simple, environment-friendly, cost-effective fabrication method together with the extraordinary durability and stability, excellent and efficient performance will find its potential applications in industrial production and environmental remediation. Ni(0) formation on carbon felt cathode triggers redox synergetic degradation of Ni-EDTA during electrochemical treatment for Ni-plating wastewater

Li-Zhi Huang,Junpeng Li,Weiguo Chen,Jia Deng,Fang Zhang

Ni organic complexes are widely used in industrial production, posing severe threats to the natural environment and human health. In this work, we found that Ni (0) formed by the decomplexation and reduction of typical Ni organic complexes (Ni-EDTA) on the surface of carbon felt cathode. The formed Ni(0) as a catalytic site generates atomic hydrogen (H•) with strong reductive reactivity via electron transfer. H• not only accelerates the oxygen activation to form H 2 O 2 on carbon felt cathode, but also reacts with H 2 O 2 to generate strong oxidative hydroxyl radicals (HO•) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Under the attack of multiple active species, 95.5 % of Ni-EDTA is removed, and the removal efficiencies of total organic carbon (TOC) and dissolved Ni reach 43.8 % and 77.1 % after 120 min of electrolysis at −2.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The redox synergistic reaction, initiated by the formation of Ni(0) on the carbon felt cathode, demonstrates excellent stability in treating real Ni plating wastewater. This approach eliminates the need for additional chemical reagents and prevents the release of heavy metals. Our findings offer a novel strategy for leveraging the self-transformation of Ni organic complexes to generate various active species for electrochemical treatment of Ni plating wastewater.

Carbon felt tailored with artificial recognition elements: an effective membrane for bisphenol A adsorption and removal

Yao Yao,Xie Wenzheng,Shen Yinzhuo,Ning Kangping,Li Hongbo,Hu Xiao-Ya,Xu Qin

Adsorption membranes have the widespread and large scale use for pollution removal with promising prospects and better efficacy than powder adsorbents. However, the low adsorption capacity and non-selectivity, reusability hindered its application. In this work, commercial carbon felt (CF) functionalized with molecularly imprinted polymers (CF-MIP) was prepared to address the environmental issues brought by bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous water. MIPs with low cost, good selectivity, long stability and reusability were tailored on the three-dimensional carbon felt (CF). The parameters including the solvents, cross-linker amount and the polymerization time for the preparation of CF-MIM as well as the selectivity and reusability of CF-MIM have been studied. The Pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model presented the most optimal fit to the experimental data in comparison to other models. The CF-MIM had a high binding capacity of 27.81 mg/g and retaining 80% of its original adsorption ability after five reuse cycles. This work will promote the development of functional CF with good selectivity and considerable stability for environmental application. Graphical abstract

Fabrication of Multifunctional Composites with Hydrophobicity, High Thermal Conductivity and Wear Resistance Based on Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Resin Composites

Haichao Huang,Yexiang Cui,Zhen Fu,Shuaipeng Wang,Yan Du,Fang Liu,Yanji Zhu

The design and preparation of hydrophobic, wear-resistant, and thermally conductive multifunctional composites is an important direction of scientific research and application. In this study, A-CF/EP/FEP composites were prepared by incorporating APDMS-modified carbon felt (A-CF) into an epoxy resin (EP) and fluorinated ethylene propylene resin (FEP) mixed resin. The low surface energy of FEP, good adhesion of EP, and the supporting of carbon felt framework endow the A-CF/EP/FEP composites with hydrophobicity, wear resistance, and thermal conductivity at the same time. Firstly, the water contact angle (WCA) of A-CF/EP/FEP composites with 20 wt% FEP reaches 109.9 ± 2.6°, and the WCAs of all composites with different FEP contents (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 wt%) is greater than 90°, indicating the composites have a hydrophobic surface. Secondly, the A-CF/EP/FEP composites have high wear resistance and maintain long-term hydrophobicity after tribological tests, because the residual debris and nanoparticles generated by external loading adhere to the friction interface, regenerating the microstructure of the hydrophobic surface. Finally, the A-CF/EP/FEP composites have high thermal conductivity up to 0.38 W/(m·K), which is 1.81 and 2.0 times that of pure EP and EP/FEP composites, respectively. This is because a relatively complete heat conduction network is formed after the addition of A-CF to the composites. The synergy among epoxy resin, FEP, and the A-CF filler plays a particularly important role in constructing hydrophobic surfaces and improving wear resistance and thermal conductivity. The EP enhances adhesion, the FEP supplies low surface energy, and the A-CF framework improves the wear resistance of A-CF/EP/FEP composites. This work provides ideas for the design and preparation of multifunctional composites and will underlie the application of high-performance epoxy resin and its composites. Keywords:hydrophobic surface;wear resistance;carbon felt;epoxy resin;composites

Hydrothermal Self-Assembly of Gold Nanoparticles Embed on Carbon Felt for Effective Nitrogen Reduction

Wei Zhang,Tianyi Wang,Chuangwei Liu,Chongxiong Duan,Wei Xiong,Hao Li

Gold-based electrocatalysts are potential candidates for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (e-NRR) application due to their high conductivity and low hydrogen evolution tendency. However, the role of nonmetallic Au surfaces is not widely studied. Herein, the self-assembly of gold nanoparticles confined in carbon felts (Au NPs@CFs) containing two different states of Au is reported, showing effective e-NRR performance. The effects of surfactant concentration on the morphology and electrochemical performance of the Au NPs are analyzed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates two valence states of Au (Au 0 and Au 3+ ) in Au NPs@CFs. Interestingly, it is found that the e-NRR properties of Au NPs@CFs enhance with the increase of Au 3+ content. A typical sample Au NPs@CF-1.0 with the highest Au 3+ content exhibits the best e-NRR performance (NH 3 yield of 66.1 μg h −1 mg −1 cat. and Faradaic efficiency of 24.9% at −0.3 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode), which, in part due to the presence of Au 3+ , is conducive to nitrogen adsorption. Theoretical calculation results find that a stable Au 3+ surface can adsorb N 2 strongly, which in turn can lead to energetically favorable formation of ammonia. This study provides new insights into the relation between oxidation states and performance of gold-based electrocatalyst with high e-NRR performance.

The radical and non-radical oxidation mechanism of electrochemically activated persulfate process on different cathodes in divided and undivided cell

Jingju Cai,Minghua Zhou,Qizhan Zhang,Yusi Tian,Ge Song

Electrochemically activated persulfate (PS) employing stainless steel (SS), carbon felt (CF) and carbon black modified CF (CB-CF) as the cathode, in the divided and undivided cell, respectively, for degradation of atrazine (ATZ) was first investigated using novel B, Co-doped TiO 2 nanotubes (B, Co-TNT) anode. In undivided cell, ATZ degradation was followed the order of CF   <   CB-CF   <   SS. The main radical for ATZ removal in SS and CF system was • OH, while on CB-CF cathode, it was the comprehensive contribution of • OH and SO 4 •- . • OH in SS system was more inclined to free • OH, while in CF and CB-CF systems it was more likely to be surface • OH. In divided anode cell , • OH was responsible for ATZ degradation in all three cathodes system. However, in divided cathode cell , • OH played a major role for ATZ degradation in SS cathode system. In CF and CB-CF cathode systems, the ATZ degradation was the comprehensive effect of • OH and SO 4 •- with the contribution of • OH and SO 4 •- was 91.7%, 8.3%, and 96.3%, 3.6%, respectively. The quenching studies showed that non-radical oxidation occurred in anode chamber in the presence of PS. Besides, the intermediates in divided and undivided cell were detected by LC-MS, and the possible degradation pathway was proposed.

Indirect Electrochemical Reduction of Indigo on Carbon Felt: Process Optimization and Reaction Mechanism

Ying’hua Xu,Hai’feng Li,Cheng’pu Chu,Ping Huang,Chun’an Ma

A carbon felt was used as the cathode material for the indirect electrochemical reduction of indigo in alkaline aqueous solution employing iron-triethanolamine (Fe-TEA) complex as a redox mediator. Surface structure and specific surface area of the carbon felt electrode and its electrochemical performance toward the reduction of indigo were investigated by SEM, BET, and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Moreover, an optimization of different operating conditions for the reduction of indigo was performed with an H-cell. In particular, the dependence of current efficiency (CE) on electrolysis time was chosen to analyze the indirect electrochemical reduction mechanism of indigo. The results showed that the carbon felt, having a high specific surface area of approximately 7289 cm2·g–1, is an excellent electrode material for the indirect electrochemical reduction of indigo and that a moderate current density, temperature, and concentration of indigo has the most beneficial effects on the reduction process.

Electrodeposition synthesis of free-standing metal/carbon felts electrodes for electrocatalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid

Yunfei Zhang,Yi Shen

Converting levulinic acid (LA) to fuel precursors such as gama-valerolactone (GVL) and valeric acid (VA) via an efficient and low-cost method is of great significance. Herein, a series of free-standing electrodes consisting of metallic metals supported by carbon felts (CFs) were fabricated via a facile electro-deposition process. The resulting M/CFs (M = Pb, Cd, Co, Ni, Cu and Bi) electrodes were evaluated for electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of LA. The electrocatalytic activity of the electrodes was extensively studied by various electrochemical methods including cyclic voltammetry , linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry measurements. The products of the ECH processes were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Of all the prepared samples, the Pb/CFs and Cd/CFs electrodes showed superior performance for ECH of LA. The selectivity of VA reached up to 91.7% when the Pb/CFs was used and the conversion of LA reached to 57.2% using the Cd/CFs electrode, rendering them as one of the best electrodes for ECH reported in the literature. The effects of applied potentials on the ECH process were investigated. To further optimize the ECH performance of the Pb/CFs electrodes, several key parameters including deposition time , pH value of the electrolyte and reaction time were studied. When the electrodeposition time was 600 s and the concentration of sulfuric acid in the electrolyte was 0.5 M, the complete transformation of 0.2 M of LA was achieved after 6 h. This study may afford an alternative way to the conversion of LA to GVL or VA.

In situ synthesis of carbon quantum dots on carbon felt fibers as a new solid-phase microextraction sorbent for chromatographic analysis of bisphenol A

Tahereh Sheikhi,Habib Razmi,Sirwan Mohammadiazar

In this study, an innovative and efficient solid − phase microextraction (SPME) sorbent was introduced based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified carbon felt (CF) substrate. CF, due to its unique characteristics including high porosity, solvent durability (without swelling), and simple modification, it was proposed as an attractive platform for preconcentration purposes. To create an impressive adsorption capacity, the synergistic effects of CQDs and the carbonaceous structure of CF were profited off. CQDs were successfully synthesized on CF fibers by using an improved one-step hydrothermal method, and the resulting sorbent was referred to as CQDs@CF. Since bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental toxin and can disrupt the endocrine system and potentially lead to cancer, highlighting the importance of detecting its presence. The prepared sorbent was used to extract bisphenol A (BPA) as a model compound from the real samples, followed by HPLC − UV analysis. Extraction parameters including desorption solvent type, and its volume, extraction, and desorption time, salting out effect and, solution pH were optimized. FESEM, EDX, FT − IR, and N 2 adsorption–desorption were used to characterize the sorbent morphology, structure, and elemental contents. Under optimal conditions, the response linearity in the range of 0.05 − 500 ng mL −1 and detection limit at the level of 0.01 ng mL −1 were obtained. Additionally, the relative standard deviations (RSD) for newly prepared CQDs@CF (sorbent to sorbent repeatability) and a certain multi − used CQDs@CF (single sorbent repeatability) at a concentration of 100 ng mL −1 of BPA, were found to be 7.2 and 4.8, respectively.
