In-situ synthesized Co3O4/Mn3O4 on monolithic nickel foam: Enhanced CO oxidation via MOF-74 derivation

Zihao Hu,Xiaoying Zhou,Tiantian Zhang,Zuliang Wu,Jing Li,Wei Wang,Erhao Gao,Jiali Zhu,Shuiliang Yao

Catalytic combustion has been considered the effective way to oxidize carbon monoxide (CO). It is both crucial and challenging to develop highly-active monolithic catalysts at lower temperatures for industrial applications. This study synthesized a monolithic Co 3 O 4 /Mn 3 O 4 -NF catalyst by the generation of in-situ metal–organic framework (MOF-74)-derived Co 3 O 4 /Mn 3 O 4 on nickel foam (NF). The resulting Co 3 O 4 /Mn 3 O 4 -NF catalyst demonstrated superior low-temperature CO oxidation performance, and the T 90 temperature was 20 °C. The enhanced activity is associated with the increased oxygen vacancy concentration, abundant Co 3+ , Mn 2+  + Mn 3+ , and surface-adsorbed oxygen species (O ads ), as well as low-temperature reducibility. In addition, operando DRIFTS analysis revealed that the surface of this as-prepared catalyst possessed abundant terminal-type oxygen (M O), facilitating CO adsorption and catalytic oxidation. This pioneering study introduces a paradigm-shifting insight: the effectiveness of non-noble metal oxide catalysts can now compete with, and in some cases, outperform their noble metal counterparts. This breakthrough is set to transform the industry, presenting a compelling alternative to conventional noble metal catalysts and propelling the evolution of state-of-the-art environmental conservation technologies.

Preparation and Photocatalytic CO Oxidation Performance Study of Au/Oxygen-Deficient (Anatase/B-Phase) TiO2 Heterojunction Microspheres

Ze Hong,Jingying Ouyang,Jiaxin Li,Han Zheng,Ying Liu

Multi-heterojunctions are more promising than single heterojunctions in photocatalysis due to the availability of more interfaces between each component. However, photocatalytic activity is highly dependent on the contact mode of individual components. In this work, we assembled gold nanoparticles/oxygen-deficient (anatase/B-phase) TiO2multi-heterojunction microspheres using spray pyrolysis and focused on their contact mode-governed photocatalytic activity. The results reveal that using oxygen-deficient (anatase/B-phase) TiO2microspheres as building blocks could significantly enhance the absorption of visible light and the photocatalytic activity of a gold–TiO2system toward the photocatalytic carbon monoxide oxidation. Furthermore, loading gold nanoparticles onto B-phase TiO2could facilitate a more prominent enhancement of activity than that of pure B-phase TiO2, benefiting from the two-electron reduction of oxygen at the interface of TiO2/Au. Meanwhile, the high crystallinity of B-phase TiO2microspheres allows for a gold loading amount of 1 wt% in the gold/(anatase/B-phase) TiO2system, which is 1.67 times more active than pure B-phase TiO2microspheres, in the photocatalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide to generate carbon dioxide. Keywords:photocatalytic carbon monoxide oxidation;B-phase TiO2;oxygen-deficient;microspheres

Fe(III)-cycle enhanced carbon oxidation reaction for low-energy hydrogen production via water electrolysis

Yuming Huang,Wei Zhou,Liang Xie,Junfeng Li,Xiaoxiao Meng,Xuewei Zhang,Yang Yu,Miaoting Sun,Jiaxiang Chen,Lijie Wang,Jihui Gao,Guangbo Zhao

Integrating the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with the carbon oxidation reaction (COR) is a promising method for producing H₂ with lower energy consumption. However, due to the passivation effect of oxygen functional groups (OFGs) for COR and Fe³⁺, achieving efficient and sustainable carbon oxidation to assist water electrolysis for hydrogen production remains a challenge over the past decades. This study introduced [EDTA·Fe(III)] – as a mediator to promote COR. [EDTA·Fe(III)] – effectively prevented the oxidation layer on the carbon surface from anchoring Fe (III) and reactivated the carbon that had been passivated by the oxidation layer. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the notable COR activity resulted from [EDTA·Fe(III)] – effectively lowering the vertical ionization potential of carbon, without being affected by OFGs. Notably, in the HER||COR-[EDTA·Fe(III)] – system, a cell voltage of merely 0.74 V is sufficient to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , with the corresponding energy consumption being 1.76 kWh Nm −3 (H 2 ). This strategy offers new insights into achieving stable, low-energy hydrogen production via water electrolysis.

Exploring the Facet-Dependent Structural Evolution of Pt/CeO2 Catalysts Induced by Typical Pretreatments for CO Oxidation

Yao Lv,Aoran Li,Jiajie Ye,Haifeng Wang,Peijun Hu,Kuan-Wen Wang,Yun Guo,Xuan Tang,Sheng Dai

Atomic-scale insights into the interactions between metals and supports play a crucial role in optimizing catalyst design, understanding catalytic mechanisms, and enhancing chemical conversion processes. The effects of oxide support on the dynamic behavior of supported metal species during pretreatments or reactions have been attracting a lot of attention; however, very less systematic integrations are carried out experimentally using real catalysts. In this study, we here utilized facet-controlled CeO2 as examples to explore their influence on the supported Pt species (1.0 wt %) during the reducing and oxidizing pretreatments that are typically applied in heterogeneous catalysts. By employing a combination of microscopy, spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, it is demonstrated that the exposed crystal facets of CeO2 govern the evolution behavior of supported Pt species under different environmental conditions. This leads to distinct local coordinations and charge states of the Pt species, which directly influence the catalytic reactivity and can be leveraged to control the catalytic performance for CO oxidation reactions.

Effect of Pd loading on ZrO2 support resulting from pyrolysis of UiO-66: Application to CO oxidation

Fukun Bi,Xiaodong Zhang,Shang Xiang,Yunyun Wang

The effect of Pd loading (0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 wt%) and ZrO 2 support calcined at diverse temperatures (600, 700 and 800 °C) by pyrolysis of UiO-66 was investigated for CO oxidation in this work, respectively. The physicochemical properties of the samples were characterized by various characterization methods. The XRD results exhibited that all ZrO 2 support possessed mixed crystalline phase, the monoclinic ZrO 2 and tetragonal ZrO 2 . And the calcination temperature had a big impact on the composition of ZrO 2 supports. Pyrolysis of UiO-66 at high temperature was favorable for the formation of monoclinic ZrO 2 . Additionally, the introduction of Pd was induced the phase conversion from tetragonal to monoclinic of ZrO 2 . The order of catalytic efficiency was as follows: 0.5Pd/Zr-700 > 0.5Pd/Zr-600 > 0.5Pd/Zr-800. Moreover, 0.5Pd/Zr-700 presented high stability and great reusability. The good catalytic performance of 0.5Pd/Zr-700 was ascribed to the better reduction ability at low temperature and high O ads /O lat and Pd 0 /Pd 2+ on the surface. Importantly, the reaction pathway of CO oxidation over the 0.5Pd/Zr-700 was exposed.

Simultaneous electrochemical reduction of water and oxidation of carbon in a solid oxide cell for separately producing hydrogen and carbon monoxide

Xiaomin Yan,Mingyang Zhou,Xiaofeng Gu,Xifen Gong,Jiang Liu

Hydrogen can be produced from reduction of water at the cathode of a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) and electricity and CO gas can be co-generated from the oxidation of carbon at the anode of a direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell (DC-SOFC). In the present work, a solid oxide cell (SOC) combining the cathode reaction of the SOEC and the anode reaction of the DC-SOFC is proposed, prepared, and investigated. It is demonstrated that hydrogen and CO can be separately produced from the cathode and anode through simultaneous reduction of water and oxidation of carbon in such a H 2 O-C SOC. Resistances from electrode polarizations are analyzed through measuring current-voltage characteristics, overpotentials, and AC impedances of the cell. The advantage of the H 2 O-C SOC over two separately operated SOEC and DC-SOFC is verified by the resistance analysis. An electrolyte-supported H 2 O-C SOC, with a cermet of silver and gadolinium-doped ceria (Ag-GDC) as the symmetrical electrode material and a steam concentration of 50 % at the cathode, gives an operating current density of 0.67 A cm -2 at the thermal neutral voltage (0.7 V). It stably operates at 0.2 A cm -2 under an applied voltage of only 0.16 V, producing pure hydrogen from the cathode and CO with a concentration of 88 % from the anode. The performance is significantly improved by using an anode-supported H 2 O-C SOC which gives an operating current density of 2.27 A cm -2 at the thermal neutral voltage.

Detection of CO absorption in the atmosphere of the hot Jupiter HD 189733b

Rodler F.,Kürster M.,Barnes J. R.

With time series spectroscopic observations taken with the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRSPEC) at Keck II, we investigated the atmosphere of the close orbiting transiting extrasolar giant planet, HD 189733b. In particular, we intended to measure the dense absorption line forest around 2.3 μm, which is produced by carbon monoxide (CO). CO is expected to be present in the planetary atmosphere, although no detection of this molecule has been claimed yet. To identify the best-suited data analysis method, we created artificial spectra of planetary atmospheres and analysed them by three approaches found in the literature, the deconvolution method, data modelling via χ2 minimization and cross-correlation. As a result, we found that cross-correlation and χ2 data modelling show systematically a higher sensitivity than the deconvolution method. We analysed the NIRSPEC data with cross-correlation and detect CO absorption in the day-side spectrum of HD 189733b at the known planetary radial velocity semi-amplitude with 3.4σ confidence.

Bi-active sites of stable and highly dispersed platinum and oxygen vacancy constructed by reducing a loaded perovskite-type oxide for CO oxidation

Siran Zhang,Kang An,Shuangshuang Li,Ziyang Zhang,Ruolin Sun,Yuan Liu

A new scheme for constructing bi-active sites of highly dispersed Pt and oxygen vacancies on a catalyst was put forward in this study. Pt/LaCo x Ni 1−x O 3 /SiO 2 was synthesized by reducing LaCo x Ni 0.87−x Pt 0.13 O 3 with the structure of perovskite loaded on silica. The catalytic performance for carbon monoxide oxidation over the catalysts were studied. The catalysts were characterized via using XRD, XPS, XAFS, N 2 adsorption–desorption, H 2 -TPR, TEM, O 2 and CO-TPD techniques. The results pointed out that nanocrystal lines of LaCo x Ni 0.87−x Pt 0.13 O 3 were supported on SiO 2 . Pt clusters could be formed through reduction process at 300 °C and highly dispersed on catalyst’s surface, and the catalyst transformed to Pt/LaCo x Ni 1−x O 3 /SiO 2 ; at the same time, oxygen vacancies also formed on the surface of LaCo x Ni 1−x O 3 . The catalytic test revealed that LaCo 0.44 Ni 0.43 Pt 0.13 O 3 /SiO 2 displayed high activity and good stability for the oxidation of CO. The highly dispersed closely contact bi-active sites, the confinement of oxygen vacancies and strong interaction between Pt clusters and support were responsible for the significant catalytic activity and stability of LaCo 0.44 Ni 0.43 Pt 0.13 O 3 /SiO 2 catalyst.

Experiments and Correlations of the Vapor–Liquid Equilibria for Carbon Monoxide + Propionic Acid and Carbon Monoxide + Methyl Formate Systems

Li Yanfen,Yuan Pingfang,Ji Jia,Zhou Jianguo,Zhu Rongjiao,Tian Yiling

Vapor–liquid equilibrium data p, T, x, ρ, and Vm at (293.2, 313.2, 333.2, and 353.2) K and pressures between (1.39 and 9.96) MPa for the binary systems of carbon monoxide (CO) + propionic acid (PA) and carbon monoxide + methyl formate (MF) were reported. The equilibria were measured using a variable-volume cylindrical autoclave. The experimental data were modeled using the Peng–Robinson (PR) equation of state (EOS) and Peng–Robinson–Stryjek–Vera (PRSV) equation of state with van der Waals I or Panagiotopoulos–Reid mixing rules. The compared results showed a satisfactory agreement between the correlated and the experimental data. The binary interaction parameters were also obtained. At the same time, the Henry's coefficient, molar solution enthalpy, and molar solution entropy of CO in propionic acid and methyl formate were calculated.

Low Pt loaded CNTs as efficient catalysts for CO oxidation

Yang Zou,Xue Li,Siqi Hu,Yumeng Wen,Xiaolong Liu,Chunxin Lu,Tingyu Zhu

Four types of Pt/C catalysts were synthesized by depositing platinum on various carbon materials, including graphene, graphitic carbon nitride, activated carbon, and carbon nanotubes. The microscopic structure and physicochemical properties of these catalysts were analyzed using different techniques such as TEM, XRD, BET, TGA, and XPS. The results indicated that platinum predominantly existed in the form of nanoparticles on graphene, graphitic carbon nitride, and carbon nanotubes. The performance of the catalysts in catalyzing CO oxidation was evaluated, and Pt/CNTs exhibited the highest efficiency compared to other catalysts. At a temperature of 170 °C, the conversion efficiency of CO on Pt/CNTs reached 96.5%. In situ DRIFTS experiments were performed, which did not show any peaks of CO adsorption on the surface of Pt/CNTs. Therefore, the oxidation of CO on Pt/CNTs was presumed to proceed via the Eley–Rideal (ER) mechanism. O2 was adsorbed and activated on Pt NPs to form a Pt NP–O–O*–CO structure with CO, which then decomposed to yield CO2 and an activated oxygen species (O*). Finally, O* reacted with CO again to produce CO2, completing the catalytic cycle.

CO Oxidation over Nanostructured Ceria Supported Bimetallic Cu–Mn Oxides Catalysts: Effect of Cu/Mn Ratio and Calcination Temperature

Lin Jin,Guo Yafei,Chen Xiao,Li Changhai,Lu Shouxiang,Liew Kim Meow

Abstract Nanostructured CeO 2 supported CuO–MnO 2 (CuMn/Ce) catalysts were synthesized by wet co-impregnation method and compared with CuO/CeO 2 and MnO 2 /CeO 2 catalysts on CO oxidation. The former shows significantly higher catalytic activity toward CO oxidation than the bimetallic oxides catalysts with minimum T 50 . Dual synergistic effects in the interfaces of CuO–MnO 2 and CuO–CeO 2 shall be responsible for the higher oxidation performance of CuMn/Ce catalyst. As Cu/Mn mass ratio varies from 1/0.2 to 1/9, CO oxidation activities of the catalysts present unimodal distribution, and the catalyst with Cu/Mn = 1/1 shows the highest performance (T 50  = 45.8 °C; Ea = 24.11 kJ mol −1 ). Cu acts as CO dissociative adsorption sites, and Mn–Ce supplies activated O species from gas molecule and lattice oxygen, which are both indispensable for improving utilization efficiency of the reactants in the dual redox processes. The catalytic performance of catalyst is also vitally correlated with calcination temperature (160–320 °C). The optimum calcination temperature of CuMn/Ce catalyst is 320 °C. Catalyst characterization results indicate that the pretreatment at 320 °C is decent to obtain desired metal oxides along with fine texture properties. Graphical Abstract

Loading mechanism and double-site reaction mechanism of Cu on activated carbon for enhanced oxidation of CO from flue gas

Zhicheng Xu,Yuran Li,Yuting Lin,Yan Wang,Qiang Wang,Tingyu Zhu

To strengthen the CO oxidation activity of activated carbon for flue gas purification, AC was modified through acid treatment and metal loading. AC-supported Cu shows excellent catalytic oxidation activity compared with other metal-modified AC samples. To investigate the action modes of Cu loaded on activated carbon and the mechanism of CO oxidation, various samples were characterized by XRD, N 2 O titration, SEM, N 2 physisorption, TPD, H 2 -TPR, XPS, in situ DRIFTS and EPR. The results show that oxygen-containing functional groups increase the loading amount and dispersion of Cu. Moreover, Cu species strongly bound to oxygen-containing functional groups are the main contributors to CO oxidation. The roles of oxygen-containing functional groups are further revealed: carboxyl groups are the anchoring sites of Cu, and hydroxyl groups supply oxygen to restore the active structure. Similarly, Ce indirectly promote the oxidation activity of CO by re-oxidizing Cu + to Cu 2+ , which accelerates the catalytic cycle. The reaction mechanism on AC-supported Cu samples has been proposed to follow the double-site Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism, with Cu 2+ as oxidation sites, Cu + as adsorption sites and the formation of oxygen vacancies on Cu + during the reaction. AC-Cu performs the highest oxidation activity at a proportion of Cu + of 0.5–0.6. SO 2 causes irreversible chemical poisoning to CO oxidation, while NO leads to reversible poisoning due to competitive adsorption with CO. The novel AC-supported Cu catalyst with Ce improves the resistance against SO 2 and NO, and the reason is explained. These findings provide theoretical guidance for the preparation and application of metal-modified activated carbon.
