Biomimetic Mechanically Enhanced Carbon Nanotube Fibers by Silk Fibroin Infiltration

Zhe Yin,Xiaoping Liang,Ke Zhou,Shuo Li,Haojie Lu,Mingchao Zhang,Haomin Wang,Zhiping Xu,Yingying Zhang

Natural materials, such as silk, nacre, and bone, possess superior mechanical properties which are derived from their unique hierarchical structures. Individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered as one of the strongest materials. However, macroscopic CNT fibers usually have breaking strength far below that of individual CNTs. In this work, by mimicking the structure of natural silk fibers, strong and stiff CNT fibers are prepared by infiltrating silk fibroin (SF) into CNT fibers. There are abundant hydrogen bonds in SF, contributing to the enhanced interactions between neighboring CNTs. Glycerol is selected to promote the formation of β-sheet conformation in SF, leading to further enhanced strength and modulus. Remarkably, the SF infiltrated CNT fibers show breaking strength of 1023 MPa, toughness of 10.3 MJ m −3 , and Young's modulus of 81.3 GPa, which are 250%, 132%, and 442% of the pristine CNT fibers. The structure of the SF and the interactions between CNTs and SF are studied via Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation. Mimicking the hierarchical structures of natural silk fibers and enhance the interfacial load transfer by infiltrating SF are effective for reinforcing CNT fibers, which may be useful in the design and preparation of other structural materials.

High-performance MnO2@MXene/carbon nanotube fiber electrodes with internal and external construction for supercapacitors

Guo Zijiao,Li Yue,Lu Zan,Chao Yunfeng,Liu Wei

Abstract As interest in smart textiles grows, fiber-based supercapacitors are gaining attention as promising devices for powering wearable electronics. Herein, we have demonstrated a two-step manufactured hybrid fiber with excellent energy storage properties. Anhydrous MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) sheets are primarily spun in synergy with liquid crystal carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to produce a continuous fiber as a promising electrode material, which solves the problem of poor rate capability owing to the sheet re-stacking of MXene. MnO 2 @MXene/CNT fibers are subsequently prepared by electrochemical deposition with controlled time. The optimal content of MXene (10 wt%) and a perfect thickness of the MnO 2 layer (4 μm) are testified to achieve an excellent capacitance of 371.1 F cm −3 in three-electrode system, which is about 200% and 1800% higher than that of 10 wt%-MXene/CNT and CNT fiber electrode, respectively. Symmetric fiber supercapacitor is assembled by paralleling two fibers with LiCl/PVA gel electrolyte, manifesting a superior cycling stability of 86.3% after 10000 cycles. Graphical Abstract Anhydrous MXene nanosheets and CNTs are incorporated by a high yield spinning technique to prepare continuous hybrid fibers as a conductive framework for MnO2 deposition, exhibiting stable and outstanding energy storage properties in supercapacitor.

Carbon nanotube fibers with excellent mechanical and electrical properties by structural realigning and densification

Wu Kunjie,Wang Bin,Niu Yutao,Wang Wenjing,Wu Cao,Zhou Tao,Chen Li,Zhan Xianghe,Wan Ziyao,Wang Shan,Yang Zhengpeng,Zhang Yichi,Zhang Liwen,Zhang Yongyi,Yong Zhenzhong,Jian Muqiang,Li Qingwen

Floating catalysis chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD) direct spinning process is an attractive method for fabrication of carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs). However, the intrinsic structural defects, such as entanglement of the constituent carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and inter-tube gaps within the FCCVD CNTFs, hinder the enhancement of mechanical/electrical properties and the realization of practical applications of CNTFs. Therefore, achieving a comprehensive reassembly of CNTFs with both high alignment and dense packing is particularly crucial. Herein, an efficient reinforcing strategy for FCCVD CNTFs was developed, involving chlorosulfonic acid-assisted wet stretching for CNT realigning and mechanical rolling for densification. To reveal the intrinsic relationship between the microstructure and the mechanical/electrical properties of CNTFs, the microstructure evolution of the CNTFs was characterized by cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), polarized Raman spectroscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The results demonstrate that this strategy can improve the CNT alignment and eliminate the inter-tube voids in the CNTFs, which will lead to the decrease of mean distance between CNTs and increase of inter-tube contact area, resulting in the enhanced inter-tube van der Waals interactions. These microstructural evolutions are beneficial to the load transfer and electron transport between CNTs, and are the main cause of the significant enhancement of mechanical and electrical properties of the CNTFs. Specifically, the tensile strength, elastic modulus and electrical conductivity of the high-performance CNTFs are 7.67 GPa, 230 GPa and 4.36 × 10 6 S/m, respectively. It paves the way for further applications of CNTFs in high-end functional composites.

Qiang Liu,Junjie Yang,Xiaogang Luo,Yifei Miao,Yang Zhang,Wenting Xu,Lijun Yang,Yunxia Liang,Wei Weng,Meifang Zhu

As shining stars of 2-dimensional materials, transition metal carbides (MXene) and transition metal oxides have attracted much interest in various energy fields due to their excellent conductive and electrochemical properties . However, big challenge still remains in the accessibility of high-performance fibrous electrodes for flexible supercapacitors . In this paper, MnO 2 nanorods are loaded on MXene sheets to obtain MnO 2 @MXene composites by a facile hydrothermal method , which are subsequently coated on carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs). With a fine control on morphology, the resulting MnO 2 @MXene/CNTF electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 181.8 F/g at 1 A/g, a capacitance retention of 91% after 5000 charge-discharge cycles, as well as superb flexibility, i.e., neglected capacitance loss at a bending angle of 180°. The as-fabricated flexible composite fiber opens a new door for transition metal carbides and transition metal oxides with great potential in flexible electronics.

Durable and washable carbon nanotube-based fibers toward wearable thermoelectric generators application

Lulu Jin,Tingting Sun,Wei Zhao,Lianjun Wang,Wan Jiang

Fiber-based flexible thermoelectric (TE) materials are very promising for wearable electronics . Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown considerable promise as thermoelectric materials , however, integrating CNTs into a fiber always lowers the performance, which limits the application of CNT-based fibers (CNTFs). This work proposes a low-cost and simple manufacturing process based on electrostatic spray technique to prepare high-performance CNTFs, whose TE and mechanical properties can be optimized by tuning spray voltage and time. With the aid of the optimized electrostatic field , the prepared CNTFs possess excellent durability and the electrical conductivity showing almost no degradation after being washed and deformed repeatedly. In addition, the CNTFs are proved to be easily converted into n-type via polyethyleneimine (PEI) doping process. Based on the prepared p- and n-type CNTFs, this work fabricates a π-type thermoelectric generator (TEG), of which the CNTFs show the ability to optimize thermal design to compensate negative effect of the intrinsic high thermal conductivity of CNTs on the output performance of the device. As a result, a maximum power of 26.2 nW with output voltage of 6.46 mV is achieved at a temperature difference of 33.4 K. This method provides a new way for preparing high-performance fiber-based TE materials.

A simple functional carbon nanotube fiber for in vivo monitoring of NO in a rat brain following cerebral ischemia

Li Liu,Limin Zhang,Zhihui Dai,Yang Tian

Nitric oxide (NO) is key free-radical messenger and neuronal signal which is closely related to many brain diseases. It is a challenge to develop a sensitive and reliable biosensor for in vivo monitoring of NO in the brain. In this research, a simple ratiometric electrochemical biosensor for NO monitoring in rat brain following cerebral ischemia was developed using a carbon nanotube fiber (CNF) modified with hemin, in which the CNF not only served as a platform to assemble the hemin molecule, but greatly facilitated the electron transfer of hemin on to the electrode surface. Additionally, the hemin molecule was found to play dual roles: as a stable catalyst for the reduction of NO for selective detection of NO at −0.67 V versus silver/silver chloride, as well as an inner reference element to provide a built-in correction, to avoid the interference from the complicated brain environment. The developed ratiometric biosensor can detect NO with a linear range from 25 to 1000 nM, with a low limit of detection down to 10 nM, which fulfills the requirements for in vivo measurement of NO. The remarkable analytical performance of the present biosensor, as well as the long-term stability and good reproducibility established this as a reliable approach for in vivo monitoring of NO in the hippocampus of rat brains following cerebral ischemia. This is the first report that the average level of NO increased from 61 ± 23 nM to 141 ± 18 nM after cerebral ischemia for 15 min.

Flexible electrochemical sensor for simultaneous determination of levodopa and uric acid based on carbon nanotube fibers

Lu Fang,Yi Zhang,Ye Liu,Jialong Shou,Hongying Liu,Lihua Li

Levodopa (L-Dopa) is a widely prescribed drug for treating Parkinson's disease (PD), however, due to its motor complications, dosage management is required during clinical treatment. Uric acid (UA) is an important antioxidant in the body and is believed to have a defensive effect on the development and progression of PD. Therefore, accurate measurement of L-Dopa and UA in PD patients is of great significance. In this study, a flexible electrochemical sensor based on carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers was developed for individual and simultaneous determination of L-Dopa and UA. The electrochemical behavior and detection performance of the sensor were studied by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The CNT fibers (CNTF) electrode exhibited a wide detection range of 0.16–2.08 mM and 0.08–0.96 mM for L-Dopa and UA, as well as a high sensitivity of 0.7142 μA μM −1  cm −2 and 1.33 μA μM −1  cm −2 , respectively. In addition, the sensor also exhibited good anti-interference, repeatability and bending stability, and has been successfully applied to the detection of L-Dopa and UA in bovine serum samples.

Engineering Carbon Nanotube Fiber for Real-Time Quantification of Ascorbic Acid Levels in a Live Rat Model of Alzheimer’s Disease

Limin Zhang,Fangling Liu,Xuemei Sun,Guang-feng Wei,Yang Tian,Zhi-pan Liu,Rong Huang,Yanyan Yu,Huisheng Peng

Ascorbic acid (AA) levels are closely correlated with physiological and pathological events in brain diseases, but the mechanism remains unclear, mainly due to the difficulty of accurately analyzing AA levels in live brain. In this study, by engineering tunable defects and oxygen-containing species in carbon nanotubes, a novel aligned carbon nanotube fiber was developed as an accurate microsensor for the ratiometric detection of AA levels in live rat brains with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). AA oxidation is greatly facilitated on the fiber surface at a low potential, leading to high sensitivity as well as high selectivity against potential sources of interference in the brain. Additionally, an unexpected, separate peak from the fiber surface remains constant as the AA concentration increases, enabling real-time and ratiometric detection with high accuracy. The results demonstrated that the AA levels were estimated to be 259 ± 6 μM in cortex, 264 ± 20 μM in striatum, and 261 ± 21 μM in hippocampus, respectively, in normal condition. However, the overall AA level was decreased to 210 ± 30 μM in cortex, 182 ± 5 μM in striatum, and 136 ± 20 μM in hippocampus in the rat brain model of AD. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to accurately detect AA concentrations in the brains of live animal model of AD.

A Miniaturized Flexible Patch Based on CNT Fiber Sensors and Highly Integrated SoC for Analysis of Sweat

Chen Chen,Ziwei Liu,Jianzheng Li,Davide Vurro,Yizhou Jiang,Luyu Xue,Ye Gong,Yaje Qin

The existing wearable sweat monitoring systems still face drawbacks in poor breathability, high power consumption, and bulky size. Herein, a miniaturized flexible sweat analysis patch based on carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber sensors and highly integrated SoC for potassium ions (K+) and lactate monitoring is proposed. CNT fiber-based sensors are developed to ensure good breathability and flexibility. The customized SoC integrates signal processing, wireless power delivery, wireless communication, and power management onto a single chip, which enjoys a miniaturized dimension (4 mm × 4 mm), requires few off-the-chip components (1 pull-down resistor and 1 decoupling capacitor), and has low power consumption (typically 33 μW in operational mode). The patch has a compact size of only 1.4 cm × 1.2 cm for the main body, accompanied by 3.4 cm 2 for the antenna, which is designed as a hollow shape to further improve breathability. The patch achieves a lactate sensitivity of 0.10 μA·mM -1 and a K + sensitivity of 47.23 mV per decade. Successful human trials were conducted to monitor K + and lactate concentrations in sweat during exercise. Overall, the proposed patch is breathable, power efficient, miniaturized, and thus suitable for long-term sweat monitoring applications.

3D-structured carbon nanotube fibers as ultra-robust fabrics for adaptive electromagnetic shielding

Li Dongping,Wang Ping,Li Yuanyuan,Yong Zhenzhong,Wu Kunjie,Zhang Yan,Wang Jin,Hu Dongmei

Wireless communication technology is indispensable in our daily lives, but it also results in serious electromagnetic radiation pollution. Hence, developing smart electromagnetic interference shielding materials with adjustable electromagnetic wave (EMW) responses holds significant promise for future electromagnetic shielding devices. In this study, we propose an electromagnetic shielding switch (ESS) characterized by tunable electromagnetic shielding performance achieved by fabricating a three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanotube-based spacer fabric (CNT-SF) and modifying CNT-SF with chemical vapor deposition (CCNT-SF). The CCNT-SF displays direction-dependent electrical conductivity by manipulating the warp and weft density, measuring 128 S/m transversely and 447 S/m vertically. This characteristic allows the CCNT-SF to transmit or shield EMW by adjusting the angle of EMW incidence through fabric rotation, resulting in anisotropic electromagnetic shielding performance (33 dB transversely and 87 dB vertically). This feature enables switchable shielding with an on/off ratio of 2.64. Furthermore, the unique 3D structure confers excellent mechanical properties on the fabric, with compressive strength reaching 120 kPa. As a flexible, lightweight, and mechanically robust ESS, the CCNT-SF holds promising prospects for mitigating the challenges of increasingly severe and intricate electromagnetic environments.

Phase-Transition-Promoted Thermoelectric Textiles Based on Twin Surface-Modified CNT Fibers

Long Yu,Xinyu Liu,Boxuan Zhang,Huijie Hu,Kunlin Chen,Haoxuan Li,David J. S. Birch,Yu Chen,Hua Qiu,Peng Gu

With the fast development of new science and technology, wearable devices are in great demand in modern human daily life. However, the energy problem is a long-lasting issue to achieve real smart, wearable, and portable devices. Flexible thermoelectric generators (TEGs) based on thermoelectric conversion systems can convert body waste heat into electricity with excellent flexibility and wearability, which shows a new direction to solving this issue. Here in this work, polyethylenimine (PEI) and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) twin surface-modified carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) were designed and prepared to fabricate thermoelectric textiles (TET) with high performance, good air stability, and high-efficiency power generation. To better utilize the heat emitted by the human body, microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCM) were coated on the hot end of the TET to achieve the phase-transition-promoted TET. MPCM-coated TET device could generate 25.7% more energy than the untreated control device, which indicates the great potential of the phase-transition-promoted TET.

Wavy-structured thermoelectric device integrated with high-performance n-type carbon nanotube fiber prepared by multistep treatment for energy harvesting

Tingting Sun,Sibo Chen,Hongfei Sun,Jiahao Li,Xin Wu,Lulu Jin,Lianjun Wang,Wan Jiang

Promoting the feasibility of thermoelectric (TE) devices toward wearable power generator application has sparked extensive interest for next-generation electronics. However, the lack of air-stable and high-performance n-type TE materials , which lag far behind those of p-type TE materials, and the deficiency of reasonable device structure design have always restricted the development of wearable thermoelectrics. Herein, we prepare a high-performance and air-stable n-type carbon nanotube fiber (CNTF) by multistep treatment and design a three-dimensional (3D) wavy-structured TE device to address the mentioned challenges. The multistep treatment including oleylamine (OA) doping followed by annealing process (250 °C) can contribute to an enhanced Seebeck coefficient of ~ −80 μV K −1 and an increased power factor of ~545 μW m −1  K −2 . Notably, it is found that the n-type CNTF prepared by this multistep treatment shows good air stability, which effectively diminishes the malignant effects of conventional annealing process on the air stability. Based on the optimized TE performance of an alternately p/n doped CNTF, the prepared wavy-structured generator integrated with two p-n couples can sustainably yield a stable amplitude of ~1.3 mV in voltage response during multiple fingering cycles and output a maximum power of ~8 nW under a temperature difference of ~5.7 K when the top of the device comes into contact with fingers. This paper provides a new insight into developing high-performance/air-stable n-type carbon nanotubes (CNTs) materials and designing reasonable device structure toward wearable applications.
