Hydrogen production via catalytic propane partial oxidation over Ce1-xMxNiO3-λ (M=Al, Ti and Ca) towards solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applications

Ji Qi,Mingzheng Liao,Chao Wang,Zhiqiang Jiang,Ying Chen,Bo Liang,Qingbin Song

Indirect hydrogen production routes presented extensive compatibilities for distributed solid oxide fuel cell systems . Catalyst activity directly determines hydrogen production and profoundly affects the power generation . In this work, Ce 1-x M x NiO 3-λ (M = Al, Ti and Ca) were synthesized for hydrogen production from propane partial oxidation (POx). From the results, it indicated that the choice of catalyst compositions could directly affect the microstructure during the preparation process. Also, different Ce 1-x M x NiO 3-λ catalysts displayed distinctive carbon tolerance performances due to the different active particle sizes and surface properties of the catalysts. In general, the synthesized Ce 1-x M x NiO 3-λ catalysts showed higher hydrogen production than a commercial nickel cerium catalyst. From the observation of a SOFC test system powered by injecting the generated H 2 from catalytic propane POx reaction, the obtained power density of CNO–Al displayed an increase of 22.6% compared to the commercial nickel cerium catalyst. It was quite impressive that the equivalent hydrogen (160 ml/min) produced over CNO–Al and the obtained power density (482.6 mW/cm 2 ) of SOFCs were competitive while CNO–Ca presented an excellent stability with a better carbon tolerance performance for the long-term tests. The achievements of this work might offer a novel point of view for developing low-cost catalyst towards indirect hydrogen production for SOFC.

Constructing Ordered Oxophilic Tin Sites on Platinum to Achieve a High-Performance and Anti-CO Poisoning Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction under an Alkaline Electrolyte

Chaoyi Yang,Guangqin Wang,Jianchao Yue,Zihao Dai,Wei Luo

The development of active and anti-CO-poisoning Pt-based electrocatalysts toward an alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is highly desirable for the practical application of anion exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, we report the synthesis of intermetallic Pt alloys with introduction of oxophilic Sn (including Pt3Sn and PtSn), significantly boosting the alkaline HOR performance and CO tolerance. Experimental results including in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations unravel that the d band centers of Pt in Pt3Sn and PtSn are notably down shift due to the introduction of oxophilic Sn, thereby leading to the decreased adsorption energy of both hydrogen and CO, which together with the enhanced adsorption energy of OH species on Sn sites contribute the lowered energy barrier for water formation and CO oxidation. As expected, the obtained Pt3Sn and PtSn both present improved HOR performance and anti-CO-poisoning ability. Specially, Pt3Sn depicts three times specific activity and four times mass activity higher than that of Pt, while PtSn maintains over 90% HOR activity after the CO poisoning.

Enhanced catalytic activity and CO2 tolerance of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ cathode for solid oxide fuel cells via incorporation of Ce0.8Pr0.2O1.9 nanosheets

Hao Lou,Baixi Xia,Chuangang Yao,Haixia Zhang,Zhe Zhang,Yuxi Sun,Jingyi Ding,Li Zhang,Xiaoshi Lang,Kedi Cai

Advancing solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) significantly relies on the development of cathode materials that exhibit both high performance and stability. This study introduces a novel heterostructure composite cathode by combining La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3- δ (LSCF) particles with Ce 0.8 Pr 0.2 O 1.9 (CPO) nanosheets through hydrothermal synthesis. The LSCF-CPO composite demonstrates remarkable enhancements in both catalytic activity and CO 2 resistance. The distinctive nanosheet morphology of CPO and the extensive heterointerfaces facilitate superior charge transfer and accelerate the processes of oxygen adsorption and dissociation. The incorporation of CPO nanosheets reduces the thermal expansion of LSCF and alters the oxygen ion transport properties, thereby establishing a three-dimensional network for enhanced ion conduction. At 750 °C, the single cell using the LSCF-10CPO cathode achieves a remarkable peak power density of 1179 mW cm −2 , representing a notable 48 % enhancement over the single-phase LSCF. Additionally, the LSCF-10CPO exhibits exceptional CO 2 tolerance. This research offers valuable insights into the design of next-generation SOFC cathodes with enhanced performance and stability, paving the way for future advancements in energy technology.

A highly active and CO2-tolerant perovskite cathode for solid oxide fuel cells operating below 700 °C

Xiaona Zhang,Tian Xia,Qiang Li,Liping Sun,Lihua Huo,Hui Zhao

Exploring high-performance and durable cathode materials can accelerate the commercialization of intermediate/low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Herein a highly active and CO 2 -tolerant perovskite cathode, Pr 0.94 Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 Co 2 O 5+ δ (P 0.94 B 0.7 Ca 0.3 C), is well-designed and developed for SOFCs operating below 700 °C. It is discovered that cation-ordered/disordered perovskite phases co-exist in P 0.94 B 0.7 Ca 0.3 C, induced by calcium doping. As a result, the P 0.94 B 0.7 Ca 0.3 C cathode exhibits a polarization resistance as low as 0.022 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C in air. When tested under realistic conditions, an anode-supported single cell delivers a peak power density of 1202 mW cm −2 at 700 °C, along with excellent long-term stability for 120 h. Furthermore, the CO 2 tolerance of P 0.94 B 0.7 Ca 0.3 C is investigated in CO 2 -containing atmosphere, demonstrating an initial polarization resistance of 0.035 Ω cm 2 in air with 10 vol% CO 2 at 700 °C, which increases to 0.053 Ω cm 2 after a 13 h operation. The degradation rate is merely ∼1/4 of that for the state-of-the-art Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3- δ (BSCF) cathode. The outstanding ORR kinetics and durability highlight the potential of P 0.94 B 0.7 Ca 0.3 C as a promising cathode candidate for SOFCs operating below 700 °C.

Effect of stoichiometric ratio of rhodium antimonide intermetallic compounds on the performance of electrocatalysis to the hydrogen oxidation reaction and CO-tolerance

Xiaofeng Ke,Yun Yang,Feng Zhou,Yihuang Chen,Mei Zhao,Quanlong Xu,Nannan Liu,Chao Zou,Huile Jin,Lijie Zhang,Shun Wang

Binary intermetallic compounds (BIMCs) play a significant role in various catalytic systems. However, the synthesis of BIMCs with different stoichiometric ratios remains challenging, and the corresponding studies toward catalytic performance are scarce. Herein, three kinds of pure-phase rhodium antimonide BIMCs (Rh 2 Sb, RhSb, and RhSb 2 ) were successfully fabricated. Interestingly, Rh 2 Sb BIMC shows the highest activity and long-time stability toward hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in alkaline condition among the prepared samples, reaching a mass normalized kinetic current density of 2.04 A mg PGM -1 (PGM: platinum group metal), which is 7.6 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C com . However, the CO-tolerance performances under 1000 ppm CO/H 2 follows the order: RhSb > Rh 2 Sb > RhSb 2 . Combined with the theoretical calculations, the shift of d-band center of Rh x Sb y BIMCs depends on the Sb content. Accordingly, Rh x Sb y BIMCs with different stoichiometric ratio display varied adsorption energy of *OH, *H and CO, giving rise to the individual HOR activity and resistance to CO poisoning. This work sheds a light on designing efficient BIMCs catalysts for energy conversion.

A-site high entropy and B-site medium entropy double perovskite structure cathode material for solid oxide fuel cells

Yawen Wang,Xinyue Zhang,Mengyu Yang,Shilun Fu,Qingjun Zhou

High entropy solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathode materials with a double perovskite structure have attracted considerable attention due to their unique multi-component design and the complex interactions among constituent elements, which endow them with exceptional catalytic performance. We report a double perovskite cathode material, La 0.2 Pr 0.2 Nd 0.2 Sm 0.2 Gd 0.2 BaCo 0.7 Fe 0.7 Ni 0.4 Cu 0.1 Zn 0.1 O 5+δ (LPNSGBCFNCZ), featuring a high-entropy design at the A-site and a medium-entropy design at the B-site, and systematically investigate its structure, electrochemical performance and CO 2 tolerance. The results demonstrate that LPNSGBCFNCZ exhibits excellent redox activity, with an area-specific resistance of only 0.07 Ω·cm 2 at 800 ℃. Furthermore, compared with the non-entropically designed PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ , LPNSGBCFNCZ exhibits superior thermal expansion properties and significantly enhanced tolerance to CO 2 . This performance improvement is attributed to the dual-entropy design of the A and B-sites: the high entropy at the A-site effectively suppresses the formation of BaCO 3 in CO 2 atmospheres, while the medium entropy at the B-site reduces the thermal expansion coefficient by lowering the Co content. This study indicates that LPNSGBCFNCZ is a highly promising SOFC cathode material, further validating the feasibility and effectiveness of the high-entropy strategy in the development of SOFC electrode materials.

Advanced Ru/Ti4O7 catalyst for Tolerating CO and H2S poisoning to hydrogen oxidation reaction

Yujie Xie,Bianyong Lian,Shuqi Deng,Qingqu Lin,Kaili Wang,Yun Zheng,Zewen Zhuang,Yao Liu,Kaian Sun,Wei Yan,Jiujun Zhang

CO and H 2 S poisoning of Pt-based catalysts for hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) stands as one of the long-standing hindrances to the widespread commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In this paper, a Ru/Ti 4 O 7 catalyst is successfully synthesized by the microwave-thermal method. This Ru/Ti 4 O 7 catalyst shows a much higher noble metal mass activity than those of commercial PtRu/C and conventional Ru/C catalysts. The performance of the Ru/Ti 4 O 7 catalyst under the exist of CO or H 2 S shows insignificant current decay, which is far superior to commercial PtRu/C and Pt/C catalysts. In this Ru/Ti 4 O 7 catalyst, the electron transfer between Ru and Ti to form d-p orbital hybridization is considered to be responsible for the favorable catalytic HOR performance and the corresponding CO and H 2 S tolerance. The interaction mechanism formed by electron transfer may open a promising way for the subsequent development of anti-poisoning catalysts for PEM fuel cell hydrogen oxidation reaction.

Electronic interactions between neighboring functionalized guest Sb single atoms and Pt clusters enhance CO tolerance

Wenkang Miao,Ronghui Hao,Lu Gan,Wanyin Xu,Zihan Wang,Wenxin Lin,Heguang Liu,Yinchun Lyu,Qianqian Li,Jinyang Xi,Anmin Nie,Jinsong Wu,Hongtao Wang

Platinum-based (Pt) catalysts are notoriously susceptible to deactivation in industrial chemical processes due to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Overcoming this poisoning deactivation of Pt-based catalysts while enhancing their catalytic activity, selectivity, and durability remains a major challenge. Herein, we propose a strategy to enhance the CO tolerance of Pt clusters (Pt n ) by introducing neighboring functionalized guest single atoms (such as Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Sb, and Bi). Among them, antimony (Sb) single atoms (SAs) exhibit significant performance enhancement, achieving 99% CO selectivity and 33.6% CO 2 conversion at 450 °C. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate the optimization arises from the electronic interaction between neighboring functionalized Sb SAs and Pt clusters, leading to optimal 5 d electron redistribution in Pt clusters compared to other functionalized guest single atoms. The redistribution of 5 d electrons weaken both the σ donation and π backdonation interactions, resulting in a weakened bond strength with CO and enhancing catalyst activity and selectivity. In situ environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) further demonstrates the exception thermal stability of the catalyst, even under H 2 at 700 °C. Notably, the functionalized Sb SAs also improve CO tolerance in various heterogenous catalysts, including Co/CeO 2 , Ni/CeO 2 , Pt/Al 2 O 3 , and Pt/CeO 2 -C. This finding provides an effective approach to overcome the primary challenge of CO poisoning in Pt-based catalysts, making their broader applications in various industrial catalysts.

Enhancing Carbon Monoxide Tolerance in Low-Temperature PEM Fuel Cells through Carbon Nitride Surface Modification

Xiao-Hui Zhang,Wei-Kun Yao,Hai-Ting Zhao,Xin-Xin Zhuang,Yan-Qi Jin,Yan Ding,Meng-Jia Li,Zhi-You Zhou,Tao Wang,Shi-Gang Sun

Low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) reuqire highly pure hydrogen gas due to their extreme sensitivity to carbon monoxide (CO) contamination, which poses a challenge for using cost-effective reformed hydrogen sources. To address this issue, we have developed a surface modification strategy by applying a 0.5–0.91 nm amorphous carbon nitride layer onto PtRu/C substrates. The electrochemical measurements indicate that the modification selectively facilitates hydrogen gas transport to a surface while inhibiting carbon monoxide diffusion. The kinetic studies of CO adsorption reveal that the surface modification significantly reduces CO adsorption, effectively halving the rate compared to conventional catalysts. Additionally, rotating disk electrode experiments show that the catalyst modified with amorphous carbon nitride layer maintains stable operation for over 20 h with 1000 ppm of CO/H2. Furthermore, it supports stable discharge at 1 A cm–2 in PEMFCs with up to 10 ppm of CO, a concentration far exceeding the widely accepted standard of 0.2 ppm.

An excellent bismuth-doped perovskite cathode with high activity and CO2 resistance for solid-oxide fuel cells operating below 700 °C

Dehong Huang,Shanglan Wu,Yi Wang,Zhenbao Zhang,Dengjie Chen

Lowering the operating temperatures of solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is critical, although achieving success in this endeavor has proven challenging. Herein, Bi 0.15 Sr 0.85 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3−δ (BiSCF) is systematically evaluated as a carbon dioxide (CO 2 )-tolerant and highly active cathode for SOFCs. BiSCF, which features Bi 3+ with an ionic radius similar to Ba 2+ , exhibits activity (e.g., 0.062 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C) comparable to that of Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3−δ and PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ , while demonstrating a considerable advantage over Bi-doped cathodes. Moreover, BiSCF exhibits long-term stability over a period of 500 h, and an anode-supported cell with BiSCF achieves a power density of 912 mW cm −2 at 650 °C. The CO 2 -poisoned BiSCF exhibits quick reversibility or slight activation after returning to normal conditions. The exceptional CO 2 tolerance of BiSCF can be attributed to its reduced basicity and high electronegativity , which effectively restrict surface Sr diffusion and hinder subsequent carbonate formation. These findings highlight the substantial potential of BiSCF for SOFCs operating below 700 °C.

Atomically Dispersed Tungsten Enhances CO Tolerance in Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Oxidation by Regulating the 5d-Orbital Electrons of Platinum

Xu Zhang,Peng Yu,Di Shen,Bin Cai,Tianyu Han,Ying Xie,Lei Wang

The susceptibility of Pt catalyst surfaces to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) has been a critical constraint on the development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Effectively regulating the electronic structure of Pt to enhance CO resistance is crucial for developing high-performance catalysts with robust anti-poisoning capabilities. Herein, the Pt/W@NCNF features by Pt nanoparticles and atomical dispersed tungsten (W) sites on N-doped carbon nanofibers is developed for CO tolerance HOR catalyst. The presence of W enables the electron transfer from Pt, which promotes electron rearrangement in the Pt-5d orbitals. It not only optimizes the adsorption of H* and CO* on Pt, but also the OH* intermediates adsorbed on the W sites oxidize the CO* adsorbed on Pt, thereby retaining more active sites for H 2 adsorption and oxidation. The HOR exchange current density of Pt/W@NCNF reaches 1.35 times that of commercial Pt/C, and the limiting current density decreases by only 3.4% after introducing 1000 ppm CO in H 2 . Notably, the Pt/W@NCNF-based PEMFCs deliver markedly superior performance across a range of CO concentrations. The present study demonstrates that electronic modulation of Pt is an effective strategy for simultaneously achieving resistance to CO and promoted HOR activity.

Branched PdAu nanowires with superior electrocatalytic formic acid oxidation activities

Yingxia Wang,Zhong Xiong,Yanzhi Xia

In this work, novel branched palladium–gold (PdAu) bimetallic nanowires supported on graphene (PdAu/graphene) were fabricated at relatively low temperatures for the first time by a one-pot co-reduction method with the aid of poly(diallyldimethyl-ammonium chloride). The structural characteristics of PdAu/graphene were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and element mapping observations. The electrochemical properties of the PdAu/graphene were characterised by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry (CA) in the formic acid oxidation reaction. Compared with a commercial Pd/C catalyst, the PdAu/graphene catalyst prepared in this work exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity including a higher oxidation current density, enhanced CO tolerance, and a more negative onset potential. Moreover, CA analyses demonstrated that PdAu/graphene shows higher stability than the Pd/C catalyst. The PdAu/graphene catalyst exhibited higher activity and strong poisoning resistance, which could be attributed to its special branched structure from PdAu nanowires.
