Inhibition Effect of Triphenylmethane Dyes for the Corrosion of Carbon Steel in CO2-Saturated NaCl Corrosion Medium

Lincai Peng,Shaomu Wen,Jing Yan,Huali Yu,Zhan Wen,Zhi Wang

Carbon dioxide corrosion presents a significant challenge in the oil and gas field. This study simulates the corrosive environment characteristics of oil and gas fields to investigate the corrosion inhibition properties of three triphenylmethane dyes. The inhibitive performance and mechanisms of these dyes were analyzed through weight loss and electrochemical testing, revealing that crystal violet (CV) exhibited a superior inhibition effectiveness over malachite green (MG) and Fuchsine basic (FB). At a concentration of 150 ppm in a CO2-saturated 5% NaCl solution at 25 °C, CV achieved an impressive maximum inhibition efficiency of 94.89%. With the increase in temperature, the corrosion rate slightly decreased, and the corrosion rate was 92.94% at 60 °C. The investigated CV acted as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor and its protection obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The corrosion morphology was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLMS). Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations were employed to validate the corrosion inhibition mechanisms, providing guidance for the further application of these dyes in corrosion control.

Carbon Corrosion Induced by Surface Defects Accelerates Degradation of Platinum/Graphene Catalysts in Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Xiong-Fei Li,Fang-Yuan Su,Li-Jing Xie,Yan-Ru Tian,Zong-Lin Yi,Jia-Yao Cheng,Cheng-Meng Chen

Graphene supported electrocatalysts have demonstrated remarkable catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, their durability and cycling performance are greatly limited by Oswald ripening of platinum (Pt) and graphene support corrosion. Moreover, comprehensive studies on the mechanisms of catalysts degradation under 0.6–1.6 V versus RHE (Reversible Hydrogen Electrode) is still lacking. Herein, degradation mechanisms triggered by different defects on graphene supports are investigated by two cycling protocols. In the start–up/shutdown cycling (1.0–1.6 V vs. RHE), carbon oxidation reaction (COR) leads to shedding or swarm–like aggregation of Pt nanoparticles (NPs). Theoretical simulation results show that the expansion of vacancy defects promotes reaction kinetics of the decisive step in COR, reducing its reaction overpotential. While under the load cycling (0.6–1.0 V vs. RHE), oxygen containing defects lead to an elevated content of Pt in its oxidation state which intensifies Oswald ripening of Pt. The presence of vacancy defects can enhance the transfer of electrons from graphene to the Pt surface, reducing the d−band center of Pt and making it more difficult for the oxidation state of platinum to form in the cycling. This work will provide comprehensive understanding on Pt/Graphene catalysts degradation mechanisms.

A unique anti-corrosion composite coating with CO2 gas barrier and acid resistance suitable for CCUS environment

Yue Sun,Sicheng Yuan,Ziheng Bai,Bin Liang,Dengyu Fu,Haodong Hu,Luchao Pei,Ruitao Wang,Yanji Zhu,Huaiyuan Wang

In the process of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), carbon dioxide is in long-term contact with metal pipelines and devices. Therefore, in the CCUS environment the corrosion of carbon dioxide to metals limits the service life. Herein we have explored the failure of epoxy (EP) coating in the CO 2 corrosion environment. Based on this, a unique g-C 3 N 4 -ESO-EP anti-corrosion coating suitable for CCUS conditions was prepared by using graphene-C 3 N 4 (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheet and epoxy silane oligomer (ESO) one-step method. The semiconductor g-C 3 N 4 prepared by the secondary thermal stripping method provides plentiful CO 2 adsorption sites and prevents the diffusion of corrosive ions (gathered state CO 2 , CO 3 2− , HCO 3 − , H + ) in the EP coating. The CO 2 gas permeability of g-C 3 N 4 -ESO-EP film (with thickness of 100 μm) is approximately 45.94% lower than that of EP film. After immersion in 1.0 M acid corrosion environment, the protection efficiency of g-C 3 N 4 -ESO-EP coating is 99.99%. After adding ESO, the “bridging effect” formed at the interface reduces the interface defects between the resin and the nano-sheet, and synergistically enhances the adhesion between the coating and the substrate. The g-C 3 N 4 -ESO-EP coating has passed the test of severe simulated CCUS corrosion environment (4 days in 3.0 MPa CO 2 and 3.5 wt% NaCl solution). The |Z| 0.01Hz value of g-C 3 N 4 -ESO-EP coating after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 120 days maintained 1.73 × 1011 O cm 2 , indicating the coating has long-term corrosion resistance. This work provides a new and simple method to improve the CO 2 resistance of EP coating and reveals the importance of functional composite coating for metal protection in CCUS process.

MoS2-rGO hybrid architecture as durable support for cathode catalyst in proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Muhammad Tuoqeer Anwar,Xiaohui Yan,Muhammad Rehman Asghar,Naveed Husnain,Shuiyun Shen,Liuxuan Luo,Xiaojing Cheng,Guanghua Wei,Junliang Zhang

Carbon black is utilized as a conventional electrocatalyst support material for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, this support is prone to corrosion under oxidative and harsh environments, thus limiting the durability of the fuel cells. Meanwhile, carbon corrosion would also weaken the linkage between Pt and the support material, which causes Pt agglomeration, and consequently, deterioration of the cell performance. To overcome the drawbacks of a Pt/C electrocatalyst, a hybrid support material comprising molybdenum disulfide and reduced graphene oxide is proposed and synthesized in this study to exploit the graphitic nature of graphene and the availability of the exposed edges of MoS 2 . TEM results show the uniform dispersion of Pt nanoparticles over the MoS 2 -rGO surface. Electrochemical measurements indicate higher ECSA retention and better ORR activity after 10000 potential cycles for Pt/MoS 2 -rGO as compared to Pt/C, demonstrating the improved durability for this hybrid support material.

Exploring the Effectiveness of Natural Food Flavors in Protecting Carbon Steel against CO2–Induced Corrosion

Xintong Wang,Jiang Yang,Xu Chen,Kunfeng Yan

Two food flavors, furfuryl mercaptan (2-FFT) and difurfuryl disulfide (DFDS), were investigated as green corrosion inhibitors for the N80 steel in a CO2-saturated solution containing 3.5% NaCl. Experimental methods, quantum chemical calculations, and molecular dynamics simulation were employed to evaluate the effectiveness of 2-FFT and DFDS. The results of the study indicate that both 2-FFT and DFDS act as mixed corrosion inhibitors, with a dominant inhibition effect on the cathodic reaction. 2-FFT is physiochemically adsorbed on the steel surface in a tiled form through the furan ring and the – SH groups as adsorption sites. On the other hand, DFDS is chemisorbed on the steel surface through the – S–S– groups in a parallel manner. DFDS exhibits a higher tendency for electron transfer and stronger adsorption to steel compared to 2-FFT. Overall, this study highlights the potential of natural food flavors as effective and environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in CO2-saturated environments. The findings of this research can contribute to the development of sustainable and nontoxic corrosion inhibitors for the oil and gas industry.

Ti4O7 supported IrOx for anode reversal tolerance in proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Li Yonghuan,Song Wei,Jiang Guang,Yang Yue,Yu Hongmei,Shao Zhigang,Duan Fangwei,Yang Yingxuan

Fuel starvation can occur and cause damage to the cell when proton exchange membrane fuel cells operate under complex working conditions. In this case, carbon corrosion occurs. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts can alleviate carbon corrosion by introducing water electrolysis at a lower potential at the anode in fuel shortage. The mixture of hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and unsupported OER catalyst not only reduces the electrolysis efficiency, but also influences the initial performance of the fuel cell. Herein, Ti 4 O 7 supported IrO x is synthesized by utilizing the surfactant-assistant method and serves as reversal tolerant components in the anode. When the cell reverse time is less than 100 min, the cell voltage of the MEA added with IrO x /Ti 4 O 7 has almost no attenuation. Besides, the MEA has a longer reversal time (530 min) than IrO x (75 min), showing an excellent reversal tolerance. The results of electron microscopy spectroscopy show that IrO x particles have a good dispersity on the surface of Ti 4 O 7 and IrO x /Ti 4 O 7 particles are uniformly dispersed on the anode catalytic layer. After the stability test, the Ti 4 O 7 support has little decay, demonstrating a high electrochemical stability. IrO x /Ti 4 O 7 with a high dispersity has a great potential to the application on the reversal tolerance anode of the fuel cell.

Novel synthesized cationic surfactants based on natural piper nigrum as sustainable-green inhibitors for steel pipeline corrosion in CO2-3.5%NaCl: DFT, Monte Carlo simulations and experimental approaches

Ahmed H. Tantawy,Kamal A. Soliman,Hany M. Abd El-Lateef

CO 2 -Corrosion is a widespread issue in oil and gas production, and various storage media have different impacts on the corrosion performance of steel used for tubes. In this paper, three novel cationic surfactants based on natural piper nigrum for inhibiting CO 2 -corrosion have been synthesized. The structure configurations of the prepared surfactants were confirmed by various spectral and physico-chemical tools viz. FTIR , 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and surface activity measurements. The measurement of contact angles was used to evaluate the wettability of all synthesized surfactants. The inhibition capacities of the titled surfactants, for steel pipelines (C1018-steel) corrosion in CO 2 -3.5%NaCl were studied by electrochemical (open-circuit potential vs. time, Tafel and EIS) measurements, surface morphology (FE-SEM/EDX) examinations, DFT , and Monte Carlo simulations. The empirical findings indicated that the prepared natural surfactants had superior inhibition action, and their maximum inhibition capacities were ranged from 96.7 to 98.9%. Tafel data displays the features of these surfactants are considered as inhibitors of the mixed-type; and their adsorption mode on the C1018-steel/medium interface is consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model. The formation of a protective layer on the C1018-steel interface was investigated using FE-SEM/EDX. DFT calculations were carried out to correlate theoretical parameters with experimental outcomes. The Monte Carlo simulations affirm the adsorption capability of the synthesized surfactants on the iron (110) crystal. The present report provides extremely significative findings in preparing and designing novel sustainable-green inhibitors with high inhibition power.

Synthesis of Fully Exposed Pt Nanoparticles on a 2D Mesoporous Graphitic Nanocarbon Framework for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Yuwei Deng,Qing Long,Yifan Gao,Kefei Chen,Hongyuan Sheng,Yajun Wang,Angang Dong

The durability of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells is often compromised by the corrosion of carbon supports in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) cathodes under harsh operating conditions, including high oxygen concentration, elevated humidity, low pH, and high potentials. To overcome this limitation, we report the synthesis of a 2D mesoporous graphitic nanocarbon framework (MGF) via chemical etching and high-temperature graphitization. The resulting MGF features a monolayer, highly ordered nanoframe architecture that offers enhanced structural stability and conductivity. Leveraging these structural advantages, we designed fully exposed Pt nanoparticles anchored on the MGF (Pt@MGF) as a model system to investigate the interplay between graphitization degree, pore architecture, and electrocatalytic performance. Among the variants, Pt@MGF-1200, synthesized at 1200 °C, demonstrates optimized mesopore confinement and strong Pt–carbon interactions. This results in superior electrochemical durability and ORR activity, positioning Pt@MGF-1200 as a promising alternative to conventional Pt/C catalysts. Graphical In this work, a novel 2D mesoporous graphitic nanocarbon framework (MGF) is synthesized through chemical etching of 2D Fe 3 O 4 nanocube superlattices (Fe 3 O 4 NCSLs) and subsequent high-temperature graphitization. MGF possesses large specific surface area, open porous architecture, and high graphitization degree, making it an excellent platform for constructing Pt-based ORR electrocatalysts. The resulting Pt@MGF catalyst exhibits superior ORR activity and durability over commercial Pt/C catalysts.
