In the face of a global energy crisis exacerbated by the adverse impacts of fossil fuel consumption, developing cost-effective catalysts with robust activity and durability has become paramount. This study introduces a novel catalyst, Pt6CuCo/Ti0.7W0.3O2, designed to address these pressing energy challenges. The approach involves doping cobalt (Co) and copper (Cu) into platinum (Pt), anchored to a Ti0.7W0.3O2 substrate, to optimize the electronic structure on the Pt surface. This optimization mitigates the adsorption capacity of oxidized species with Pt, thereby enhancing the methanol electro-oxidation reaction (MOR) activity of the material. Furthermore, this innovation overcomes the limitations associated with carbon-based catalysts, significantly bolstering durability. The Pt6CuCo/Ti0.7W0.3O2 catalyst exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic properties, including an onset potential, mass activity, and If/Ib ratio of approximately 0.1 vs NHE, 273.38 m2 gPt–1, and approximately 1.85, respectively. These values are in stark contrast to traditional Pt/C catalysts, which yield an onset potential of approximately 0.45 vs NHE, 193.28 m2 gPt–1, and an If/Ib ratio of approximately 0.89. The results obtained in this study underscore the immense potential of Pt6CuCo/Ti0.7W0.3O2 as a catalyst for MOR development, offering a promising solution to address the prevailing energy challenges and environmental concerns associated with conventional fossil fuel sources.

The development of high-performance cathodes is critical to promoting the development of Li–O2 batteries. In this work, three-dimensional NiCo2O4 nanowire-decorated NiO nanosheets (NiO@NiCo2O4) on a Ni foam were fabricated by a two-step solvothermal process. The product exhibited efficient catalytic performance for Li–O2 batteries. This three-dimensional NiO@NiCo2O4 hierarchical structures grown on Ni foam forms a porous catalytic surface for the uniform growth of discharge products. First, NiCo2O4 is a promising catalyst for improving the oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/OER) processes for the Li–O2 batteries. Second, NiO can provide a porous scaffold for the further deposition of NiCo2O4 nanowires to avoid their aggregation. Furthermore, NiO can promote the decomposition of by-products containing carbonate/carboxylate species. As a result, the Li–O2 system with NiO@NiCo2O4 as a carbon-free cathode showed a maximum in-depth-specific discharge capacity of 9361.4 mA h g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1 and 176 cycles of stability under a limited capacity of 500 mA h g−1 at a current density of 200 mA g−1. The reported strategy regarding a multicomponent hierarchical structure may provide a new approach for effective electrocatalyst design for Li–O2 batteries.

Graphical An aqueous solution process was used to generate flat, compact, and carbon free Sb 2 S 3 films, leading to high efficiency in planar heterojunction Sb 2 S 3 solar cells. 3-mercaptopropionic acid was applied as both solvent and sulfur precursor, and aqueous ammonia was employed as a solvent. Planar heterojunction solar cell based on the as-prepared Sb 2 S 3 film delivered a power conversion efficiency of 5.57 %. Sb 2 S 3 is a new kind of photovoltaic material that is promising for practical application in solar cells owing to its suitable bandgap, earth-abundant elements, and excellent stability. Here, we report on an aqueous-solution-based approach for the synthesis of Sb 2 S 3 films from easily accessible Sb 2 O 3 as antimony source. In this reaction, 3-mercaptopropionic acid was applied as both solvent and sulfur precursor, aqueous ammonia was employed as a solvent. After simple annealing at a temperature as low as 270 °C, the spin-coated precursor solution can generate compact, flat, uniform, and well-crystallized Sb 2 S 3 film. Mechanistic study showed that the formation of Sb-complex with ammonium carboxylates leads to the successful dissolution of Sb 2 O 3 powder. A suitable annealing process was able to generate carbon-free Sb 2 S 3 films. Planar heterojunction solar cell based on the as-prepared Sb 2 S 3 film delivered a power conversion efficiency of 5.57 %, which is the highest efficiency of solution-processed planar heterojunction Sb 2 S 3 solar cells and a high value in all kinds of Sb 2 S 3 solar cells. This research provides a convenient approach for the fabrication of device-quality Sb 2 S 3 films, and highlights solution processing of carbon-free metal chalcogenide thin films as a suitable process for application in optoelectronic devices.

The generation process for the highly reductive carbon dioxide radical ( CO 2 − ) in the Fe(III)-oxalate system is enhanced under UV irradiation and used in nitrate (NO 3 − ) reduction with improved product selectivity to nitrogen (N 2 ). The combination of Fe(III) and residual oxalate forms Fe(III)-oxalate complexes again for an Fe(II)/Fe(III) species cycle and achieves generation of CO 2 − radical continually. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum demonstrates the existence of CO 2 − radicals in this process. Some of the important control factors, such as initial concentrations of ferric ions (Fe(III)) (0.5, 1, 2, and 3 mM), NO 3 − (14, 21, and 42 mg N/L), oxalate (3, 7, and 10 mM), and pH values (2, 3, 4, 5, and 6), are systematically assessed for NO 3 − reduction efficiency and N-species selectivity. Among all the control factors mentioned, pH is a key parameter with an important role in the NO 3 − reduction process. Excellent NO 3 − reduction efficiency (∼90 %) was achieved at pH 3 in the presence of 1 mM Fe(III) and 10 mM oxalate under UV irradiation for 120 min. High Fe(III) and oxalate concentrations promote NO 3 − removal. In addition, there was an increase in the NO 3 − removal amount with a greater initial NO 3 − concentration. About 60 % of NO 3 − can be selectively reduced to N 2 with low selectivity to NO 2 − (∼3.4 % of total N) and NH 4 + (∼15.7 % of total N). In general, the UV/Fe(III)-oxalate system provided an alternative way to improve NO 3 − removal performance and selectivity to form N 2 in water and wastewater remediation processes.

In this study, three different types of ZrO2 films were prepared with different precursors and additives using the sol-gel method. High-temperature annealing was implemented to investigate the impact of temperature on optical properties, microstructure, surface morphologies and absorption of these films. According to the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) tests on films having experienced annealing and those implemented with in-situ high temperature, the ZrO2 film with ZrOCl2·8H2O as the precursor and copolymer of silicone and polyaldoxyl ether as the additive had the highest resistance to laser-induced damage. After annealing at 623 K, its LIDT was 21.4 J/cm2, while that at an in-situ high temperature of 523 K was 23.9 J/cm2. The strong high temperature resistance was likely attributed to the usage of carbon-free precursor and high temperature-resistant additive, which contributed to low carbon contents and less structural damage caused by organic matter evaporation. In this context, there were less high temperature-induced impurity and structural defects, leading to higher LIDT values. This study provided a novel method for preparing high temperature-resistant sol-gel films, which shed light upon wider potential application of sol-gel films at high-temperature conditions.

Hydroxyl radicals (HO•) show low reactivity with perchlorinated hydrocarbons, such as carbon tetrachloride (CT), in conventional Fenton reactions, therefore, the generation of reductive radicals has attracted increasing attention. This study investigated the enhancement of CT degradation by the synergistic effects of hydroxylamine (HA) and formic acid (FA) (initial [CT] = 0.13 mmol/L) in a Fe (II) activated calcium peroxide (CP) Fenton process. CT degradation increased from 56.6% to 99.9% with the addition of 0.78 mmol/L HA to the CP/Fe(II)/FA/CT process in a molar ratio of 12/6/12/1. The results also showed that the presence of HA enhanced the regeneration of Fe(II) from Fe(III), and the production of HO• increased one-fold when employing benzoic acid as the HO• probe. Additionally, FA slightly improves the production of HO•. A study of the mechanism confirmed that the carbon dioxide radical (CO 2 • − ), a strong reductant generated by the reaction between FA and HO•, was the dominant radical responsible for CT degradation. Almost complete CT dechlorination was achieved in the process. The presence of humic acid and chloride ion slightly decreased CT removal, while high doses of bicarbonate and high pH inhibited CT degradation. This study helps us to better understand the synergistic roles of FA and HA for HO• and CO 2 • − generation and the removal of perchlorinated hydrocarbons in modified Fenton systems.

The performance of sodium percarbonate (SPC) activated with ferrous ion (Fe(II)) with the addition of formic acid (FA) to stimulate the degradation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) was investigated. Results showed that CTcould be entirely reduced within 15 min in the system at a variety of SPC/Fe(II)/FA/CT molar ratios in experimental level. Scavenging tests indicated that carbon dioxide radical anion (CO 2 ∙ – ) was the dominant reactive oxygen species responsible for CT degradation. CT degradation rate, to a large extent, increased with increasing dosages of chemical agents and the optimal molar ratio of SPC/Fe(II)/FA/CT was set as 60/60/60/1. The initial concentration of CT can hardly affect the CT removal, while CT degradation was favorable in the pH range of 3.0–9.0, but apparently inhibited at pH 12. Cl – and HCO

of high concentration showed negative impact on CT removal. Cl – released from CTwas detected and the results confirmed nearly complete mineralization of CT. CT degradation was proposed by reductive C-Cl bond splitting. This study demonstrated that SPC activated with Fe(II) with the addition of FA may be promising technique for CT remediation in contaminated groundwater.

It is highly desirable but challenging to control nitrate contamination using photocatalytic reduction technology over non-mental catalysts. Herein, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), a typical non-metal catalyst, was employed to photocatalytic denitration in water with formic acid (FA) as a hole scavenger. Compared with a mental catalyst TiO 2 and a non-mental catalyst g-C 3 N 4 , h-BN obtained a more effective reduction performance with nitrate conversion of 97.16% and N 2 selectivity of 95.42%. After three cyclic use, it still presented excellent reduction activity and structure stability. In the h-BN system, the initial pH had a significant effect on the nitrate reduction performance because it determined the surface charge property of the catalyst or the dispersibility in water, and the presence of anions slightly decreased the nitrate conversion process since the competitive adsorption of NO 3 – or NO 2 – . Photocatalytic denitration over h-BN was well according with the Extended-Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. By comparing the average stoichiometric ratio of consumed FA and removed NO 3 – (i.e. experiment value) with the theoretical value, it was determined that there were additional electrons involved in the reduction reaction in addition to CO 2 •- radicals, which was also supported by the quenching experiments. Moreover, CO 2 •- radicals were mainly responsible for the conversion of NO 2 – to N 2 . Exposed B atoms on the h-BN edges behaved as the adsorption sites of nitrogen oxide anions. This study provides a proof-of-concept demonstration of non-mental photocatalyst h-BN for more effective management of nitrate contamination.

The persistence of chlorinated alkanes in aquatic environments poses significant health risks due to its biotoxicity and high volatility, which contributes to both water and air pollution. This study investigates the efficacy of carbon dioxide radical anion (CO 2 • − ) mediated advanced reduction processes (ARPs) for the reductive dechlorination of chlorinated alkanes using small molecular monocarboxylic acids (SMAs) under UV irradiation. The study focused on formic acid (HCOOH), acetic acid (CH 3 COOH), and propionic acid (CH 3 CH 2 COOH) to generate CO 2 • − , revealing that UV/HCOOH system exhibits a notably high chloroform (CF) degradation efficiency of 97.8% in 90 minutes. Kinetic studies indicated a linear relationship between the HCOOH concentrations and the observed reaction rate constants ( k obs ), demonstrating that CO 2 • − production is crucial for CF degradation. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy identified CO 2 • − and hydroxyl radicals (HO•) as the active species, with the former playing a predominant role in CF degradation. The study also explored the influence of carbon chain length in SMAs on CF degradation, finding that longer chains decrease the degradation efficiency, potentially due to reduced UV activation. A higher reaction rate constant ( k obs ) under acidic conditions, with a marked decrease in efficiency as the pH exceeds 3.7, where HCOO − becomes predominant. This study enhances our understanding of CO 2 • − mediated ARPs and explores potential applications in environmental remediation, providing insights into the pathways and mechanisms of CF degradation. The UV/SMAs systems offer advantages for practical applications, such as milder reaction conditions and higher efficiency compared to traditional methods.

Significant progress has been achieved in tumor therapies utilizing nano-enzymes which could convert hydrogen peroxide into reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the ROS generated by these enzymes possess a short half-life and exhibit limited diffusion within cells, making it challenging to inflict substantial damage on major organelles for effective tumor therapy. Therefore, it becomes crucial to develop a novel nanoplatform that could extend radicals half-life. Artesunate (ATS) is a Fe (II)-dependent drug, while the limited availability of iron(II), coupled with the poor aqueous solubility of ATS, limits its application. Here, Prussian Blue (PB) was selected as a nano-carrier to release Fe (II), thus constructing a hollow Prussian blue/artesunate/methylene blue (HPB/ATS/MB) nanoplatform. HPB degraded and released iron(III), ATS and MB, under the combined effects of NIR irradiation and the unique tumour microenvironment. Moreover, Fe (III) exploited GSH to formation of Fe (II), disturbing the redox homeostasis of tumor cells, and Fe (II) reacted with H2O2 and ATS to generate carbon radicals with a long half-life in situ. Furthermore, MB generates 1O2 under laser irradiation conditions. In vitro and in vivo experiments have demonstrated that the HPB/ATS/MB NPs exhibit a synergistic therapeutic effect through photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy and radical therapy.

Designing carbon-free electrocatalysts that can efficiently drive hydrogen evolution (HER), oxygen evolution (OER), and zinc-air battery (ZAB) reactions in alkaline media remains difficult because of the different kinetic requirements of each process. Herein, we demonstrates a carbon-free crystalline-amorphous (C-A) Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 @CoN/Mo 2 N heterostructured nanosheets synthesized through a single-step annealing method that simultaneously forms a crystalline alloy core and an amorphous nitride shell. This direct route eliminates carbon supports and avoids multi-stage alloying or nitridation, resulting in tightly coupled C–A interfaces that accelerate charge transfer and stabilize active sites. The catalyst delivers low overpotentials of 43 mV for HER and 297 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , enabling an overall water splitting (OWS) low voltage of 1.56 V. It also maintains excellent durability under harsh electrochemical conditions owing to the absence of carbon, mitigating agglomeration and degradation. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 /CoN optimizes hydrogen adsorption, while the Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 /Mo 2 N promotes oxygen intermediate formation. Integrated into a flexible ZAB, the catalyst exhibits a high specific capacity of 811.6 mAh g −1 , a small voltage gap of 1.15 V at 50 mA cm −2 , and 150 h of stable cycling. A self-powered system coupling this flexible ZAB-OWS system further demonstrates the practical viability of this one-step-engineered C–A heterostructure for sustainable energy applications.

Combating bacterial biofilm poses a significant challenge because of the dense extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) barrier and inherent drug tolerance. Herein, the designed core-shell nanoparticles (DA 3 -NPs) that eradicate biofilm by precise in-situ phototherapy are reported. DA 3 -NPs are self-assembled using thermosensitive azo-polymers (AP 3 ) to encapsulate GSH-degradable phototherapeutic polymers (DBP) via charge interaction. Notably, D -aminoalanine grafted onto the AP 3 serves as a critical component, providing an electroneutral shell and bacterial peptidoglycan targeting ability to the DA 3 -NPs. Consequently, DA 3 -NPs effectively penetrate EPS up to a depth of 60 µm and precisely target the bacteria within the biofilms. Upon exposure to laser irradiation and the GSH microenvironment, DA 3 -NPs undergo sequential responses involving shell detachment and core disintegration. These processes facilitate point-to-point bacterial killing through the in-situ generations of ROS, carbon radicals and heat damage to the internal bacteria. Compared to non-targeted nanoparticles, DA 3 -NPs exhibit a 61-fold increase in biofilm removal efficiency. This study thus presents a precise in-situ phototherapy strategy for nonantibiotic treatment of biofilm infections.
