Different mesoporous carbon carriers for the improvement of solubility and physical stability of poorly soluble drugs

Wei Gu,Qinfu Zhao,Ye He,Shengyu Wang,Yuanqi Yang,Yian Li,Shuaipeng Feng,Siling Wang

Mesoporous carriers have gained significant attention for enhancing the solubility and bioavailability of Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS) Class II drugs. However, the contribution of mesoporous carriers with varying morphologies to the physical stability of these drugs is not well-defined. In this work, mesoporous carbon nanoparticles (MCN) and hollow carbon mesoporous nanoparticles (HMC) were prepared, while the weakly acidic Indomethacin (IMC) and alkaline Celecoxib (CXB) were incorporated into these carriers in the amorphous state by the solvent evaporation method. Notably, HMC demonstrated superior drug loading efficiencies (approximately 43 %) for both IMC and CXB owning to its hollow structure. The mesoporous drug loading systems significantly enhanced dissolution rates in comparison with both self-made amorphous drugs and raw drugs. Furthermore, under accelerated and long-term storage conditions, the mesoporous carriers effectively prevented drugs loaded from crystallization, maintaining constant dissolution profiles for over 12 months. Intriguingly, CXB exhibited a slower rate of crystallization after loading into the mesoporous carriers, likely due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the carbonaceous carrier material and the amino groups of CXB. Compared with loaded drugs, the self-made amorphous drugs exhibited a crystallinity increase beyond 60 % within the initial month. Collectively, these findings highlighted the potential of mesoporous carbon carriers to elevate the dissolution behaviors of BCS Class II drugs while preserving the physical stability of the loaded amorphous drugs.

Electrodeposition of Se on carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles by cyclic voltammetry

Song Qian,Li Hui,Liu Junji,Hu Shi

Cyclic voltammetry (CV) is a powerful and popular electrochemical technique widely used to study the surface structure of materials through the electrochemical behaviors. Herein CV is utilized to study the electrochemical deposition of selenium (Se) on carbon black-supported Pt nanostructures. We synthesized carbon-loaded platinum nanoparticles (Pt/C) by microwave method and studied the electrochemical behavior of selenium on them. Through the experiment of changing the reverse potential, the corresponding relationship between the Se deposition peak and stripping peak was clarified and the deposition and stripping process of Se was proposed. Meanwhile, we synthesized cubic and octahedral nanocrystals of Pt, and used CV to study the Se deposition on these nanosctructures supported by carbon. It was found that the relative intensity of UPD peaks on Pt is different, as Pt cube @C is dominated by (100) and Pt oct @C electrode is dominated by (111) while Pt@C falls in between.

Phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanol on a novel Pd7P3/SiC catalyst with high activity and selectivity

Yanxi Qin,Rongyu Li,Wei Mi,Wei Shi,Baoying Lu,Xili Tong

Aqueous catalytic phenol has been explored using Pd 7 P 3 /SiC catalysts in the presence of H 2 . Palladium phosphide was prepared by oleoamine reduction and supported on silicon carbide. The physicochemical properties of the catalyst were characterized by inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrometer (ICP-MS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that palladium phosphide is successfully supported on silicon carbide, and the dispersion is relatively uniform with the particle size is about 6–9 nm. Under the same catalytic conditions, a catalyst with a loading of 2.4 wt% exhibits the best activity. When the temperature is 40 °C, the initial pressure is 5 bar, the conversion of phenol can reach more than 99%, and the selectivity of cyclohexanol reaches 94% after 2 h reaction.

Electrocatalyst with fluorinated protective layer for efficient oxygen reduction in the operating temperature of PEMFCs

Chang Li,Wenlong Wang,Sheng Zhu,Hui Pan,Qunjie Xu,PengHui Shi,YuLin Min

One of the important factors affecting the actual service life of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is that catalysts agglomeration and carbon carrier corrosion will be accelerated by operating temperatures. In this paper, through a simple F-doping strategy, F-doped carbon-supported PtZn i-NPs (PtZn i-NPs/F-C) catalysts were prepared. The metal-support interaction (MSI) was enhanced by doping the element F. This also inhibited catalyst aggregation and increased Pt element oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. Aside from this, the electronegativity of F prevents reactive oxygen species (ROS) from attacking the carbon support during the reaction process, ensuring that after 5000 CV cycles at 80 °C, the catalysts still maintain ∼0.856 V as a half-wave potential, only losing 9 mV, much higher than the half-wave potential of commercial Pt/C after 5000 CV cycles (∼0.777 mV). This work provides a brand-new perspective on solving the problems caused by the increase in the operating temperature of PEMFCs, and also provides a new idea for the preparation of electrocatalyst for ORR.

Degradation-resistant waste plastics derived carbon supported MoS2 electrocatalyst: high‒nitrogen dependent activity for hydrogen evolution reaction

Ying Zhao,Jia Zhao,Qing Li,Chuantao Gu,Boying Zhang,Caihong Liu,Zheng Li,Shuozhen Hu,Shanlin Qiao

It is still a great challenge to design a simple, low-cost and highly active catalyst for the industrial production of hydrogen from water electrolysis. Herein, we report a synthesis of molybdenum disulphide (MoS 2 ) supported on carbon supports with high concentration of doped-nitrogen derived from large scale industrial waste plastics, i.e. melamine (CWM) and polyurethane (CWPU), by a simple hydrothermal reaction . Few layers of MoS 2 nanosheets with high catalytic activity can be very-well dispersed on CWM and CWPU. The supports with high‒nitrogen content can not only greatly improve the conductivity of supported MoS 2 nanosheets, but also provide additional active sites with the presence of high pyridinic‒N content. The synergistic effects between the MoS 2 nanosheet and CWM and CWPU contribute to high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. As the concentration of doped-N increases, the HER performance of MoS 2 -based catalysts is improved. MoS 2 /CWM 1:1 with the highest nitrogen content (11.1 wt %) shows the lowest overpotential of 56 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , the smallest Tafel slope of 36.6 mV·dec −1 , and the highest exchange current density of 0.35 mA cm −2 in acidic condition, which are comparable to that of commercial 20% Pt/C.

Synthesis and characterization of molybdenum carbide catalysts on different carbon supports

Shihang Meng,Xiaoxiao Xue,Yujing Weng,Siyi Jiang,Guang Li,Qi Sun,Yulong Zhang

Molybdenum carbide is a noble-metal-like material, which shows great potential in many applications. The conventional Temperature-Programmed-Reduction (TPRe) method uses carbonaceous gases to carburize with molybdenum precursors, which has made a significant progress but still hard to scale up. In this work, molybdenum carbides were prepared by carburization of ammonium molybdenum molybdate on cellulose, g-C 3 N 4 , MWCNTs and sodium lignosulfonate without using any gaseous carbon source. Moreover, the formation of molybdenum carbide was subjected to in-depth investigation by using an in situ Simultaneous Thermal Analyzer – Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry coupling System. The technique revealed that the solid carbon carriers do have a great effect on the formation of molybdenum carbides. Furthermore, various characterization methods such as XRD, SEM, CO-TPD, FTIR and organic element analysis (OEA) were also applied to investigate the property of prepared molybdenum carbides. The results suggested that the prepared molybdenum carbides with CEL, MWCNTs and SLF as carbon supports could retain the skeleton and porous structure of a solid carbon carrier, and the prepared molybdenum carbides with g-C 3 N 4 as a carbon support could generate a new three-dimensional (3D) structure support, and the composition of carriers would also have an impact on the adsorption and physicochemical properties of molybdenum carbides.

Size sensitivity of supported Ni nanoparticles on carbon for the synthesis of secondary amines from acceptorless dehydrogenation-hydrogenation of primary amines

Ziliang Yuan,Guanghui Wang,Xun Li,Yurong He,Pan Wang,Francesco Mauriello,Zehui Zhang

Earth-abundant metal catalysts, especially Ni, are highly favourable in heterogeneous reactions compared with noble metal ones. Herein, Ni nanoparticle catalysts supported on Vulcan carbon (VCX) support were prepared through a simple impregnation-reduction method and utilized for the acceptorless dehydrogenation of primary amines to secondary amines. The best performance was achieved with Ni (A) /VXC with Ni particle size of 11.9 nm at 150 °C. Smaller or larger particle sizes resulted in a lower TOF, indicating a structure-sensitive activity. This work may serve as inspiration for further investigation into acceptorless dehydrogenation using non-noble metal catalysts.

Carbon-loaded ordered PdZn alloys for efficient oxygen reduction in zinc–air batteries

Wenjun Kang,Jiabao Chen,Yuanjie Zhang,Yajie Guo,Fanpeng Meng,Konggang Qu,Rui Li,Lei Wang,Zongge Li,Haibo Li

The fabrication of ordered noble metal alloys on carbon supports can effectively alter the electronic structure of the catalyst interface and the valence states of the elements, presenting a viable alternative to platinum (Pt) for the electrocatalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in metal–air battery cathodes. Herein, we developed a straightforward in situ reduction synthesis method that facilitates the formation of ordered PdZn alloy catalysts on hollow carbon under specific conditions, optimizing ORR efficiency. In an oxygen-saturated 0.1 M KOH solution, the ORR performance of the synthesized Pd 0.02 Zn-NC-900 catalyst exhibits an initial potential of ∼0.996 V and a half-wave potential of ∼0.887 V at 1600 rpm. When integrated into a zinc–air battery, it achieves a remarkable specific power of 213.7 mW cm −2 and a specific capacity of 813.8 mAh g Zn − 1 , outperforming commercial Pt/C. Our research focuses on the efficient synthesis of carbon-supported ordered PdZn alloys to address the needs of electrochemical energy conversion applications.

Mitigating Green Oil Deactivation in Acetylene Hydrogenation Using Carbon-Supported Pd Catalysts

Seokyoung Hwang,Young Bean Hwang,Hyun Wook Hwang,Dansil Kim,Ji Young Lee,Jongkook Hwang,Eun Duck Park,Seok Ki Kim

This study investigates the mitigation of green oil deactivation in acetylene hydrogenation using carbon-supported Pd catalysts. Various carbon supports including CMK-3, short CMK-3, activated carbon, graphite, mesoporous carbon, graphite nanofiber, and carbon nanotube, are compared. Catalyst performance, including deactivation rates and product selectivity, is evaluated under high acetylene concentration conditions. Comprehensive characterization of catalyst properties is conducted using techniques such as scanning electron microscope, Ar physisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, CO chemisorption, and thermogravimetric analysis. The study reveals that carbon-supported catalysts generally exhibit slower deactivation rates compared to alumina-supported catalysts. Among carbon supports, carbon nanotube demonstrates exceptional stability, while graphite shows rapid deactivation. The catalyst surface area shows the strongest correlation with the deactivation rate, suggesting that the larger the surface area, the easier it is for the generated green oil to escape without covering the active Pd sites. These findings highlight the importance of textural properties in designing stable catalysts for acetylene hydrogenation and emphasize the need for a holistic approach to catalyst design.

In-situ observation of defects evolution of graphene nanoflakes in Pt/C catalyst for boosting ORR performance

Yongqing Shen,Peizhi Liu,Yangrui Li,Jianghong Wu,Yanhui Song,Junjie Guo

The structural stability of supported metal nanoparticles determines the activity and longevity of heterogeneous catalysts. Unfortunately, the chemical/thermal working environment inevitably accelerates metal sintering to larger crystallites that leads to the degradation of catalytic performance. Here, we demonstrate that the distribution of defects in carbon support as an inherent parameter plays a crucial role in catalyst sintering. Based on in-situ transmission electron microscopy studies, the strong metal-support interaction between platinum (Pt) nanoparticles and defect-rich graphene nanoflakes largely suppresses metal sintering up to 700 °C. Particularly, the optimal carbon support can be achieved in the annealing process, in which the mass transfer and charge transport can be enhanced by accurately manipulating the distribution of defects in carbon matrix and graphitization degree. It is worth noting that the screened Pt/GNs-300 exhibits impressive oxygen reduction reaction performance with high half-wave potential (0.91 V), mass activity (108.1 A g –1 Pt ) and excellent stability. By its ascendancy in ORR, the Pt/GNs-300 exhibits a high open-circuit voltage of 1.41 V and a maximum power density of 198.6 mW cm −2 in Zn-air battery, implying its brilliant practicability. This work paves a pathway for achieving sinter-resistant metal-loaded catalysts in energy electrocatalysis.

Anti-corrosive tin oxide modified carbon support for platinum nanoparticles enables robust oxygen reduction reaction

Yuke Gu,Shaohui Zhang,Meihuan Liu,Juan Luo,Xuanzhi Liu,Hanxiao Liao,Feng Liu,Pengfei Tan,Jun Pan

The stability of platinum (Pt)-based catalysts supported on carbon black is significantly compromised during the oxygen reduction reaction due to the corrosion susceptibility of disordered carbon domains under highly acidic conditions. In this study, we present a novel tin oxide modified carbon support (C@SnO 2 ) designed to enhance Pt-based catalytic performance by protecting disordered carbon domains and optimizing electronic metal-support interactions (EMSI). The optimized 1.2-Pt-C@SnO 2 catalyst achieves a remarkable mass activity (MA) of 0.23 A·mg Pt −1 , surpassing conventional Pt-C catalysts (0.10 A·mg Pt −1 ) by a significant margin. Moreover, the 1.2-Pt-C@SnO 2 catalyst demonstrates exceptional stability, retaining 91.7 % of its MA and experiencing only a 10.3 % loss in electrochemically active surface area after 30,000 cycles (1.0–1.6 V). In situ Raman spectra further reveals that SnO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) effectively stabilize disordered carbon domains within the carbon black, thereby enhancing catalyst stability in acidic media. This method of utilizing SnO 2 NPs to improve carbon supports offers a promising approach to extend the operational lifetime of carbon-supported catalysts under harsh acidic conditions.

Triggering highly stable catalytic activity of metallic titanium for hydrogen storage in NaAlH4 by preparing ultrafine nanoparticles

Xin Zhang,Zhuanghe Ren,Xuelian Zhang,Mingxia Gao,Hongge Pan,Yongfeng Liu

Highly stable catalytic activity of metallic Ti and corresponding mechanistic understanding are of particularly critical importance for the development of sodium alanate (NaAlH4) as an advanced on-board hydrogen storage medium. However, only limited catalytic effectiveness is observed for commercial metallic Ti powders due to their ductile behavior limiting the dispersion of large particles. Here, we successfully synthesize ultrafine metallic Ti nanoparticles (3–5 nm) supported on amorphous carbon (nano-Ti@C) through a facile, scalable calcination process. Unlike commercial metallic Ti powders, the nano-Ti@C exhibits remarkable catalytic activity for hydrogen storage in NaAlH4, superior to other reported transition metals and rare earth metals. The 7 wt% nano-Ti@C-containing NaAlH4 sample delivers a quite low onset temperature of dehydrogenation of 75 °C and a practically available hydrogen capacity as high as 5.04 wt%. Reloading of hydrogen is fully completed in <3 min at 100 °C and 120 bar H2; this sorption kinetics is fastest among all catalytically enhanced NaAlH4 systems known. Moreover, only 0.07 wt% of hydrogen capacity is lost after 100 cycles, exhibiting a highly stable cyclability. Theoretical calculations reveal the interaction between Ti and Al, which not only weakens the Al–H bonding but also facilitates diffusion of H in NaAlH4, contributing to the superior catalytic activity of nano-Ti@C. Our findings greatly increase potentials towards practical applications of catalyst-doped NaAlH4 for onboard hydrogen storage.
