The efficient utilization of low-grade thermal energy to produce clean water or electricity is important because it potentially relieves our demand on limited natural water and energy resources. Here, we propose a dual-functional device to couple solar-driven water evaporation and evaporation-induced power generation for concurrent production of clean water and green electricity. Our strategy involves the fabrication of an asymmetric, dual-layered structure by spraying a carbon black/polyvinylidene fluoride mixture onto bamboo filter paper (CB/PVDF@BFP). The upper CB/PVDF layer serves as a light-to-thermal transducer for instantaneous heating, while the bottom BFP layer functions as a hydrophilic porous platform to boost water uptake and transfer. Moreover, water evaporation drives capillary flow of ions on the conductive CB/PVDF layer to create a pseudostream that can be harnessed for power generation. Notably, our dual-functional device delivers a fast water evaporation rate of 1.44 kg m−2 h−1 and a high energy utilization rate of 92% under one sun, beyond the previous carbon-based reports. Through this solar-driven water evaporation process, we achieve the efficient desalination of artificial seawater and decontamination of organic-polluted water by up to 99.8% and nearly 100%, respectively. Our device also concurrently produces high, consistent evaporation-induced electrical outputs with VOC and ISC of 0.32 V and 1.5 μA, respectively. The generated electrical outputs can be easily stored by charging a capacitor to over 1.5 V within 15 minutes and be subsequently utilized on demand to power common household electronics. By enabling the efficient coupling of multiple solar-driven processes, our work will catalyze the design of next-generation multifunctional devices to ensure electricity and potable water are easily accessible by everyone, especially remote areas without power stations and/or water treatment facilities.

Manipulation of water for power generation has garnered significant research interest as it is renewable, sustainable, and a spontaneous form of energy production. However, energy conversion efficiency has remained constrained, primarily attributed to the slow evaporation rates of water and limited energy recovery strategies. Herein, we demonstrate a two-pronged hybrid water transformation energy harvester that strategically integrates solar-thermal effects with pyroelectric effects to boost water transformation and its associated energy extraction. The core of our unique ensemble consists of two layers: the upper layer features a composite film comprising carbon black (CB) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) coated onto bamboo fibers (CB/PVDF@BFP), which realizes solar-thermal and hydrovoltaic effects owing to the excellent solar-thermal and electrical activities of CB while the bottom layer is PVDF film to simultaneously generate pyroelectricity. Notably, the optimized CB/PVDF@BFP achieves a maximal temperature of ∼78 ℃ and an open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) and a short-circuit current ( I SC ) of 0.33 V and 1.6 μA, respectively. Consequently, we achieved a maximal output power density of 64 μW/m 2 under one sun (25 ℃), surpassing the output under dark conditions by ∼92 %, and exceeding most similar designs. Moreover, the CB/PVDF@BFP film exhibits a maximal oscillation of ∼0.5 ℃/s and an evaporation rate of 1.44 kg·m −2 ·h −1 under optimized conditions, owing to the strategic inclusion of hydrophilic BFP. Concurrently, our ensemble also generates a maximum V OC , I SC and output power density of pyroelectricity of ∼80 V, 0.4 μA, and 7.4 mW/m 2 (∼25.9-fold higher than the dark state), which is > ∼3.9-time higher than the similar reports, respectively. As proof of concept, our hybrid design can successfully power various household electronic devices (such as LED lights, electronic watches etc.) by storing the harvested energy into capacitors, thus showcasing its potential for practical applications. Our ensemble not only demonstrates remarkable performance but also lays the foundation for innovative concepts in the development of emerging hybrid micro/nano-generators, offering an avenue for harnessing ubiquitous ambient energy.

The solar-driven water-electricity cogeneration system (WECS) has emerged as a promising strategy to simultaneously address the global challenges of water scarcity and sustainable energy production. Despite its dramatic potential, current WECS technologies face issues related to complex processes and limited energy output, which hinder their practical application. In this study, we present an efficient WECS utilizing a spray-constructed carbon black/polyvinylidene fluoride loaded bamboo fiber paper (CB/PVDF@BFP) hybrid integrated with double-stacked thermoelectric generators (TEGs). The CB/PVDF@BFP composite features a Janus structure with hydrophobic and hydrophilic sides, facilitating efficient water evaporation and hydrovoltaic electricity generation. Under one sun irradiation, the composite achieves an evaporation rate of ~ 1.41 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with ~ 90 % photothermal efficiency and up to ~ 99.8 % decontamination efficiency for efficient water purification. Notably, our designed hybrid power generation module can reach up to ~ 1600.44 mW/m 2 under 1 sun, ~ 3-fold and ~ 4000-fold exceeding the previous only thermoelectric- and hydrovoltaic- based devices, respectively. This hybrid approach demonstrates enhanced energy recovery and utilization of solar energy, offering a promising solution to the water and energy crises through a single WECS.
