A CuNi-Loaded Porous Magnetic Soft Material: Preparation, Characterization and Magnetic Field-Controlled Modulus

Jingyuan Bai,Xuejiao Wang,Meilin Zhang,Jin Zhang,Xiaolin Chen,Yanan An,Renguo Guan

Novel porous magnetic soft materials (pMSMs) based on a poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) porous matrix filled with CuNi nanoparticles (NPs) of around 70 nm were synthesized. Initially, magnetic CuNi NPs were fabricated by the reduction of Ni and Cu ions with hydrazine hydrate in ethylene glycol medium in the absence of other capping agents. The pMSMs are subsequently fabricated by mixing CuNi NPs and PVA through freezing-drying process. The as-obtained pMSMs can respond to a magnetic field, i.e., the compressive modulus increase under a magnetic field of 0.23 T. The experimental results indicate that CuNi NPs can easily move to form chain-like structures under the application of a magnetic field. A combination of direct observation and finite element modeling has shown that under the influence of a magnetic field, chain-like aggregates of CuNi NPs lead to self-reinforcement of the pMSMs and, thus, to the increased compressive modulus. From a technological point of view, these materials with good magnetic responsiveness and moderate mechanical strength have potential applications in artificial muscle, soft actuators and drug release, to name a few.

Magnetic nanoparticles modified by citrate groups for magnetically responsive photonic crystals

Qianli Li,Xiaolei Li,Wei Wang,Han Lin,Lin Zhuang,Yue Xu

Induced by appropriate magnetic field, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles self-assemble into magnetically responsive photonic crystals (MRPC), showing the potential applications in color display, bioimaging agents and sensors. We report a kind of Fe 3 O 4 clusters synthesized by one-pot hydrothermal reaction with the attachment of a small molecule (citrate groups) on the surface, which increases negative charge density and demonstrates the characteristics of good water-dispersity and stability. The characteristics of the nanoparticles are measured by TEM , SEM, FT-IR, XRD , XPS , TG and VSM. The variation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles size is determined by the amount of citrate. The MRPC show tunable photonic performance under a magnetic field ranging from 80 to 374 G, which could be controlled by the size, concentration, washing method and washing cycles.

In Situ Synthesis of Magnetic Field-Responsive Hemicellulose Hydrogels for Drug Delivery

Weifeng Zhao,Karin Odelius,Ulrica Edlund,Changsheng Zhao,Ann-Christine Albertsson

A one-pot synthetic methodology for fabricating stimuli-responsive hemicellulose-based hydrogels was developed that consists of the in situ formation of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles during the covalent cross-linking of O-acetyl-galactoglucomannan (AcGGM). The Fe3O4 nanoparticle content controlled the thermal stability, macrostructure, swelling behavior, and magnetization of the hybrid hydrogels. In addition, the magnetic field-responsive hemicellulose hydrogels (MFRHHs) exhibited excellent adsorption and controlled release profiles with bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the model drug. Therefore, the MFRHHs have great potential to be utilized in the biomedical field for tissue engineering applications, controlled drug delivery, and magnetically assisted bioseparation. Magnetic field-responsive hemicellulose hydrogels, prepared using a straightforward one-step process, expand the applications of biomass-derived polysaccharides by combining the renewability of hemicellulose and the magnetism of Fe3O4 nanoparticles.

Bioinspired superoleophobic miniaturerobots and their multiple functions at the oil–water interface

Huanyu Zhou,Xiaodong Wang,Yuting Zhou,Niandong Jiao

Miniature robots have important applications in fields such as cargo transportation, environmental detection, and energy exploration. In particular, miniature robots that can swim in oil water systems have great potential for droplet manipulation or cargo assembly. However, the need to impart high antiwetting and low oil adhesion properties to these robots still severely hinders their movement in oil water systems. In this work, we prepared underwater-superoleophobic miniature robots using an ultrafast oxygen plasma treatment, which requires only 8 s of surface modification. Owing to their underwater superoleophobicity, the robots can swim at the oil water interface and perform cargo transport, assembly, and rotation, as well as transport oil droplets underwater. In addition, under magnetic fields (20–60 mT), the strider robot can swim and jump at the oil water interface, demonstrating flexible, responsive motion. These findings demonstrate that our rapidly fabricated, multifunctional miniature robots possess excellent interfacial mobility and controllability, suggesting promising applications in oil–water systems.

Preparation of magnetic microgels based on dextran for stimuli-responsive release of doxorubicin

Lihua He,Rong Zheng,Jie Min,Fulin Lu,Changqiang Wu,Yunfei Zhi,Shaoyun Shan,Hongying Su

Hydrogel nanocomposites incorporated with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were widely researched as promising candidate for environment-responsive drug delivery, due to their unique magnetic properties and quick response to an external magnetic field. In this study, dextran-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 ) with various particle size were prepared and embedded physically into dextran microgels formed via Schiff base reactions between aldehyded dextran and diamine in W/O inverse microemulsion, leading to a series of magnetic microgels with MNPs content of 3, 6, 9% by weight percentage. Similar superparamagnetic properties of as prepared microgels with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were proved, and their saturation magnetization increased with the increasing particle size or content of the MNPs. Antitumor drug doxorubicin (DOX) was encapsulated into the magnetic dextran microgels, and pH/magnetic field dual-responsive release profiles of DOX were demonstrated. Moreover, the release rate of DOX decreased obviously with the increasing MNPs content, probably due to the diffusion barrier for drug movement resulted from the reduced pore size of hydrogel matrix in respond to external magnetic field. These results indicate that the magnetic dextran microgels can serve as stimuli-sensitive drug delivery systems.

Alternating Magnetic Field-Responsive Nanoplatforms for Controlled Imidacloprid Release and Sustainable Pest Control

Lihong Zhang,Chaowen Chen,Jia Zhang,Bin Liu,Guopeng Teng,Junjun Wang,Xin Zhang,Dongqing Cai,Zhengyan Wu

In this study, an alternating magnetic field-responsive controlled-release imidacloprid (IM) nanoplatform (MRCIN) was fabricated by loading IM in yolk–shell Fe3O4@C. Fe3O4@C with a large BET surface area (312.62 m2/g) acted as a carrier for IM. Interestingly, the Fe3O4 nanoparticles in MRCIN could vibrate under varied electromagnetic fields (VEFs) to boost the release of IM. Therefore, MRCIN presented an excellent alternating magnetic field-responsive controlled-release performance via designing the frequency and voltage, which could be proved by the release curve and control efficacy experiment. After release, the existence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was in favor of the collection of MRCIN from water. Importantly, MRCIN could be reutilized at least three times. From the viewpoint of biosafety, Fe3O4@C owned a fine biocompatibility, and MRCIN had little influence on fish and earthworm without VEF. Thus, the study provides a simple and potential way to achieve the controlled release of IM, improve utilization efficiency, and decline pollution to the environment. This system might have a good practical value in sustainable pest control and green agriculture.

Near-infrared light and magnetic field dual-responsive 3D printed scaffolds for sequential treatment of infected bone defects

Dapeng Zeng,Hao Wang,Zehao Yu,Xiaohan Mei,Boda Ying,Si Pu,Shibo Liu,Xiangjun Pan,Shicheng Zhou,Ruiyan Li,Yanguo Qin

The treatment of infected bone defects remains a challenge due to the complex biological processes involved, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, angiogenesis and bone regeneration. Polyetherimide (PEI) has promising applications in orthopaedics, but its biological inertness limits its clinical efficacy. In this study, a smart near-infrared (NIR) light and magnetic field responsive 3D printed scaffold was developed by combining PEI and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Gelatin methacrylate hydrogel containing aloe-emodin (AE), a natural antimicrobial and antioxidant compound, was subsequently injected into the 3D printed scaffold to create the P–Fe3O4@GM–AE composite scaffold. This composite scaffold exhibited several key functionalities: Firstly, it effectively eliminated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus when exposed to NIR light, achieving an in vivo antimicrobial rate of 99.97 ± 0.1%. Secondly, it effectively removed reactive oxygen species and prevented the pro-inflammatory M1 polarization of macrophages in the infected bone defect microenvironment, creating favorable conditions for bone reconstruction. Moreover, during the reconstruction stage, the magnetic composite scaffold, when combined with a static magnetic field, promoted osteogenesis–angiogenesis coupling, thereby accelerating bone repair. Thus, this study provides new insights and methods for the sequential treatment of infected bone defects.

Magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles mediated redox and pH dual-responsive target drug delivery for combined magnetothermal therapy and chemotherapy

Qinfu Zhao,Peiyu Xie,Xian Li,Yue Wang,Ying Zhang,Siling Wang

A combination of multiple therapies is conducive to the treatment efficacy of cancer. Chemotherapy combined with magnetothermal therapy provides an outstanding synergy for cancer treatment. In this study, magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MMSN) were developed as a multipurpose nanoplatform for doxorubicin (DOX) delivery and magnetothermal treatment of cancer simultaneously. The MMSN were composed of Fe 3 O 4 and mesoporous silica as core and shell. The folic acid (FA) linked chitosan (CS) was conjugated at the outlets of MMSN (MMSN-SS-FA) using disulfide bonds to avert the premature release of the drug in mesopores of MMSN, target folate receptor-overexpressed cancer cells and increase the safety and physiological stability of MMSN. The temperature of the MMSN suspension could be elevated from 37 °C to 45 °C at the concentration of 1 mg/mL under an alternating magnetic field (AMF), which exceeded the tumor ablating temperature. The in vitro drug release proved that the DOX/MMSN-SS-FA displayed the redox/pH/AMF multiple-responsive release. The cellular uptake results indicated that the MMSN-SS-FA could target folate receptor-overexpressed HeLa cells. The DOX/MSNS-SS-FA with AMF had the highest cytotoxicity at the equivalent drug concentration towards HeLa cells with a combination index (CI) of 0.276, demonstrating the synergistic treatment effect of chemotherapy and magnetic-thermal therapy. Meanwhile, the DOX/MMSN-SS-FA+AMF showed the strongest tumor inhibitory effect of 84 % on tumor growth. Therefore, the constructed MMSN-SS-FA with good biocompatibility and biosafety can act as multifunctional nano-platforms for tumor treatment.

Magneto-Responsive Networks Filled with Polydopamine and Silane Coupling Agent Dual-Modified Carbonyl Iron Particles for Soft Actuators

Xiushang Du,Zhenjie Zhao,Xuhang Zhang,Jingyi Zhu,Yingdan Liu

Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are a type of smart materials formed by dispersing magneto-responsive micron particles in an elastic polymer matrix. They hold significant potential for various applications due to their tunable stiffness, capability to carry out non-contact actuation, and rapid responsiveness to magnetic fields. However, weak interfacial interactions and poor dispersion of magnetic particles within the polymer matrix often lead to diminished magnetorheological (MR) performance. In this study, carbonyl iron powder (CIP) was chemically modified via polydopamine (PDA) deposition followed by grafting with isobutyl (trimethoxy)silane (IBTMO) to enhance its compatibility with a silicone-based matrix. The resulting anisotropic MREs fabricated using the dual-modified CIP exhibited a reduced elastic modulus, enhanced elongation, a large magnetically induced bending angle of 38°, and a notably improved MR effect of 246.8%. Furthermore, a magnetic soft actuator was designed based on the anisotropic dual-modified CIP-based MRE. When used as flippers for a duck model, the actuator successfully propelled a load approximately 76.8 times its own weight at a speed of 3.48 mm/s, thereby demonstrating promising potential for applications requiring load-bearing actuation.

A novel UV, moisture and magnetic field triple-response smart insulating material achieving highly targeted self-healing based on nano-functionalized microcapsules

Potao Sun,Fengqi Liu,Wenxia Sima,Tao Yuan,Ming Yang,Chen Liang,Mingke Zhao,Ze Yin

During the long-term operation of solid insulation materials, strong electric fields and mechanical stress cause electrical trees and cracks that are undetectable and irreversible, leading to the failure of electronic and electrical devices. A promising means of protecting against these problems is to endow the insulating materials with some self-healing capability alongside their excellent intrinsic properties. However, this has proved extremely challenging. In this paper, we describe an ultraviolet light, moisture, and magnetic field triple-response microcapsule that enables epoxy resin materials to heal themselves against various forms of damage without affecting the intrinsic performance of the matrix. In particular, microcapsules wrapped inside functional shells containing Fe3O4 nanoparticles are precisely controlled by a targeted magnetic field and distributed in the vulnerable area of the insulation materials, resulting in a high healing rate at low doping concentrations. Using the in situ ultraviolet light emitted by the electrical trees, artificial ultraviolet light, and moisture in the operating environment, it is possible to induce active or passive curing of the healing agent, thus realizing the intelligent, non-contact, and targeted self-healing of mechanical cracks and electrical tree damage. This method opens an avenue toward the development of self-healing insulation materials for electrical and electronic applications.
