Leakage-Proof Flexible Phase Change Gels with Salient Thermal Conductivity for Efficient Thermal Management

Hong Cao,Yuan Li,Weidi Xu,Jie Yang,Zhengying Liu,Lu Bai,Wei Yang,Mingbo Yang

Phase change materials (PCMs) as one of the most potential latent heat storage techniques have been widely used for thermal management and energy storage. However, simultaneously imparting flexibility, high thermal conductivity, and considerable energy storage density to organic PCMs remains challenging. In this work, a coupling strategy combining substance exchange and magnetic orientation has been proposed to fabricate phase change gels (PCGs) with thermally induced flexibility and high through-plane thermal conductivity. In the PCGs, synthesized boron nitride/ferroferric oxide (BN@Fe3O4) particles and polyacrylic acid (PAA) precursor liquid are introduced to polyethylene glycol (PEG) aqueous solution, and a magnetic field is applied in the process of PAA network construction to promote ordered arrangement of BN@Fe3O4 along the direction of the magnetic field. Consequently, PEG is wrapped by the cross-linked PAA supporting network, forming PCGs with excellent shape stability and thermally induced flexibility. The vertical orientation structure of BN@Fe3O4 endows the PCGs with an enhanced through-plane thermal conductivity of up to 1.07 W m–1 K–1 at a BN@Fe3O4 loading of 25.6 wt % with an additional enhancement of 215% compared to the composite without BN. The thermally conductive leakage-proof PCGs present great application potential in heat storage and management.

Design and preparation of low-filled magnetic oriented BN@Fe3O4/EP insulating composite with improved thermal conductivity and thermal stability

Zeyu You,Ling Weng,Lizhu Guan,Xiaorui Zhang,Zijian Wu

As an excellent two-dimensional insulating material with high thermal conductivity , high temperature stability and high hardness, hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN) is widely applied in semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, metallurgical manufacturing and other cutting-edge fields. However, the unique surface structure of h-BN leads to poor lubricity and easy agglomeration, which limits the application of h-BN especially in the field of electronic packaging. To address key issues boosted above, this study designed and prepared the BN@Fe 3 O 4 magnetic insulating particles and doped it into the reduced viscosity epoxy resin to prepare the composites. By selecting appropriate external magnetic field strength and BN@Fe 3 O 4 particles’ content, a novel 3D structure of fillers like dominoes in epoxy resin composite was successfully constructed. The microstructure of the BN@Fe 3 O 4 particles and composites were analyzed, the thermal conductivity, the mechanical and the electrical properties of composites were simultaneously tested. Results manifested that the core-shell structures with BN as core and Fe 3 O 4 as shell was successfully prepared, linking through the PDA middle layer between the BN core and Fe 3 O 4 shell. Under the influence of magnetic orientation, the BN@Fe 3 O 4 magnetic particles were preferred an out-of-plane oriented in the epoxy resin composites, resulted an enormously enhanced on thermal conductivity of composites. At a magnetic field strength of 60 mT and 25 vol% BN@Fe 3 O 4 content, the thermal conductivity of BN@Fe 3 O 4 /EP composites is as lofty as 1.832 W/(m K), which is 1023.46% higher than that of pure epoxy resin. Meanwhile, the thermal stability has also been slightly improved, the elastic modulus and insulation performances remain at the same level.

Magnetic Field-oriented One-step Fabrication of Metal-grade Thermally Conductive Carbon Fiber Flexible Thermal Pad

Kang Xu,Yandong Wang,Zhenbang Zhang,Maohua Li,Rongjie Yang,Yingying Guo,Jianxiang Zhang,Boda Zhu,Yiwei Zhou,Xingye Wang,Yue Qin,Linhong Li,Tao Cai,Wen Dai,Cheng-Te Lin,Kazuhito Nishimura,Xinfeng Wu,Nan Jiang,Jinhong Yu

As modern electronic devices trend toward miniaturization and integration, there is an urgent need for excellent thermal pads to facilitate efficient interface heat transfer. Carbon fibers (CFs), owing to their outstanding axial thermal conductivity and thermal stability, emerge as a promising high-performance filler. However, the fabrication of high filler content composites using the inherent diamagnetic properties of CFs through magnetic orientation remains challenging. In this study, a solvent dilution method is employed to dilute the high-viscosity PDMS with ethyl acetate, producing a PDMS dilute solution with a viscosity of only 2.28 mPa·s. This facilitated the vertical alignment of CFs in the solution at a low magnetic field (0.4 T) with a filler content as high as 60 wt.%. Specifically, completely vertical CFs achieved an alignment exceeding 93%. The prepared VCF/PDMS composite exhibited an exceptionally high through-plane thermal conductivity of 141.57 W m −1 K −1 , reaching the level of metallic thermal conductivity. Furthermore, the thermal management application of the composite material as a thermal interface material for cooling electronic devices is demonstrated.

Multiprogrammable Anisotropic Soft Material via Magneto-Orientation of Ferromagnetic Nanoplates

Mingfeng Chen,Junliang Chen,Sanhu Liu,Dongqing He,Yong Wang,Hongtao Chen,Dongdong Jin,Xing Ma

Anisotropic materials featured with ordered arrangement of sub-structures are ubiquitous in living organisms, and possess rapidly increasing relevance to emerging technologies in smart materials, soft robotics, flexible displays, and biomedicines. However, the integration and programming of multiple properties into anisotropic materials, which endow themselves with extended intrinsic capabilities and utilities, still remain a challenge. Herein, we report a multi-programmable anisotropic material by embedding ferromagnetic two-dimensional nanoplates into hydrogel matrix. The nanoplate exhibits not only a disc-like non-isotropic shape, but also an intrinsic easy magnetization axis perpendicular to its basal plane. Using a directional external magnetic field, we can precisely control the orientation of nanoplates inside hydrogel precursor solution and then fix them via photolithographic polymerization, leading to the fabrication of anisotropic hydrogel with on-demand ordered alignment of nanoplates. Such deliberate arrangement of nanoplates brings in extraordinary optical properties due to birefringence, enabling us to encrypt pattern information into hydrogel materials that is only visible under polarized light. Soft actuators with programmable optical, mechanical and magnetic properties are engineered, which allow to encode diverse deformation and locomotion modes, determine the actuation sites, and monitor the sub-structural anisotropy all simultaneously, opening new avenues for the design of anisotropic soft materials.

Magnetic field-induced orientation of Fe3O4-GO and toughening effect on epoxy resin

Zhang Dandan,Yang Fanghong,Wang Rumin

Magnetic nanoparticle-coated graphene oxide (GO) can be oriented in polymers under magnetic field due to the anisotropy of GO and excellent magnetism of magnetic nanoparticles. In this study, ferroferric oxide nanoparticles coated GO (Fe 3 O 4 -GO) was synthesized successfully using oxidation-coprecipitation method. The synthesized Fe 3 O 4 -GO was then added to epoxy and oriented by applying magnetic field using (1) the electromagnetic coil and (2) permanent magnets to toughen the epoxy matrix. Non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests were performed to determine the curing process of Fe 3 O 4 -GO/E-51/3a-methyl-5,6-dihydro-4 H -isobenzofuran-1,3-dione (MeTHPA)/2,4,6 Tris(dimethyl aminomethyl)phenol (DMP-30) system (Fe 3 O 4 -GO/E-51/MeTHPA/DMP-30). Transmission electron microscope images show that Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were coated on the GO surface homogenously and Fe 3 O 4 -GO were highly oriented in E-51/MeTHPA/DMP-30 epoxy system under different magnetic field conditions. The maximum impact strength of Fe 3 O 4 -GO/E-51/MeTHPA/DMP-30 composite was observed at 0.2 wt% Fe 3 O 4 -GO loading, with values of 28.64 and 30.54 kJ/m 2 in case of the magnetic field applied through permanent magnets and electromagnetic coil respectively, which is an increase by 39.6 and 48.8% respectively when compared with the pure E-51/MeTHPA/DMP-30 system (20.52 kJ/m 2 ). In addition, at 0.4 wt% Fe 3 O 4 -GO loading and application of magnetic field through electromagnetic coil, the maximum increase in flexural modulus was observed, which was increased by 41.8% and 17.23% compared with the pure epoxy system and the one without application of magnetic field at same Fe 3 O 4 -GO loading respectively. The fracture morphologies from the scanning electron microscope also indicated that the oriented Fe 3 O 4 -GO under magnetic field improved the toughness of the E-51/MeTHPA/DMP-30 resin system.

Study on Self-Healing Technology of Epoxy Resin for Insulator Core Rods

Ying Zhang,Mingwei Wang,Ran Zhuo,Wenxu Tang,Chaolu Niu,Qiulin Chen,Weihong Yang,Sicheng Zhao

Epoxy resin insulation materials are prone to micro-damage such as scratches and electrical treeing, which can lead to a decline in insulation performance and threaten the safe operation of the entire system. Microcapsule-based self-healing technology is one of the most promising solutions to address the micro-damage issues of epoxy resin. However, research has shown that when the microcapsule doping concentration exceeds 3 wt%, the mechanical strength decreases significantly, while a too low doping concentration affects the healing efficiency. This paper focuses on epoxy resin used in insulator core rods and addresses the contradiction between “low microcapsule introduction” and “high healing efficiency.” This work synthesizes magnetically targeted UV-sensitive microcapsules suitable for self-healing insulator core rods. During the curing process of the epoxy resin, the microcapsules can be directionally guided by a magnetic field to distribute in areas prone to damage, thereby ensuring repair efficiency while reducing the quantity of microcapsules used. The microcapsule shells possess UV-shielding properties, ensuring the stability of the internal repair core material. When damage propagates to the capsules, the core material flows out and cures under UV light, completing the repair of the damage. Additionally, larger-scale self-healing epoxy rod specimens were fabricated, demonstrating excellent self-healing performance against mechanical scratch damage and electrical treeing damage. In comparison, composite materials without microcapsules exhibited a reduction in tensile strength and breakdown strength to 69.06% and 74.77%, respectively, after mechanical damage. Post-repair, the mechanical strength recovery rate reached 91.6%, and the breakdown strength recovery rate achieved 90.4%.

Anisotropic, strong, self-adhesive and strain-sensitive hydrogels enabled by magnetically-oriented cellulose/polydopamine nanocomposites

Guihua Yan,Shuaiming He,Gaofeng Chen,Xing Tang,Yong Sun,Feng Xu,Xianhai Zeng,Lu Lin

Recently, great efforts have been devoted to developing conductive adhesive hydrogels to meet the needs of various applications. However, grand challenges remain in achieving anisotropic hydrogels simultaneously featuring multiple properties using natural polymers and renewable resources. Here, a cellulose-based conductive hydrogel with strong, ultrastretchable, and adhesive properties is prepared via a simple magnetic field-induced strategy. This strategy involves the formation of a suspension mixture with well-oriented cellulose-polydopamine nanocomposites under magnetic fields, followed by rapid orientation via covalent crosslinking. The tensile strength of the oriented hydrogel in longitudinal direction is ~0.22 MPa, which is ~1.4 times higher than that in radial direction. Moreover, the hydrogel shows good cyclic loading-unloading ability, high conductivity (6.9 ± 0.6 S m −1 ), and strong adhesion (71 kPa). The hydrogel also shows significant anisotropic properties and made it a versatile platform for wearable sensors to monitor large and subtle human motion in the foreseeable future.

A Facile Way of Enhancing Thermally and Electrically Conductive Properties of Epoxy/Ni/GNP Composites via Construction of a Hybrid Filler Network with a Magnetic Field Orientation Technique

Bin Yang,Ning Jia,Xiaohong Wang,Yang Pan,Mengning Luo,Xinya Chen,Ru Xia,Zhengzhi Zheng,Jiasheng Qian,Yuchao Ke,Lifen Su,Yirong Fang

In this work, epoxy (EP) resin composites with “point-surface” heterostructures constructed by hybrid fillers of Ni particles and graphene nanosheets (GNPs) are prepared via a blending method under magnetic field. Effects of filler content and magnetic orientation on dielectric, thermally and electrically conductive, and thermomechanical properties of the resultant composites are investigated. The findings disclose that the synergistic effect of hybrid fillers and the magnetic orientation result in the formation of a complex heterogeneous network structure, significantly improving both thermal and electrical conductivities. From the temperature distribution analysis, it is the construction of the heterogeneous network that improves the thermally conductive and thermomechanical properties. Sample Y4 (containing 28 wt% Ni and 2 wt% GNP) displays an average heating rate (AHR) of 152.4 °C min −1 and has an out-of-plane thermal conductivity of 0.930 W m −1 K −1 (267.6% higher than that of neat EP). The infrared thermal imaging (ITI) together with SEM observations further confirms that the Ni chains in situ formed under a magnetic field are responsible for the improved composite's thermal conductivity and thermal management capability, which make it potentially applicable for 3D packaging materials in power-intensive electronic components.

Enhancing dielectric property and multi-interface polarization of poly(vinylidene fluoride)/Ni-embedded CaCu3Ti4O12 fibers composites tailored by magnetic field

Liang Gao,Qianqian Xiao,Chengxi Wang,Jing Sun,Funing Zhang,Xuan Wang

In the realm of advanced electrical equipment and systems, polymer nanocomposites possess significant application value due to their excellent dielectric properties. Metal@ceramic fillers with a core-shell structure can enhance the dielectric constant ( ε ′) of polymer nanocomposites; however, their application is limited by the high dielectric loss (tan δ ). A magnetic field tailoring strategy is introduced in this article to significantly improve the dielectric properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composites. Magnetic CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 –Ni (CN) composite fibers are formed by embedding Ni nanoparticles within CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 (CCTO) fibers. Furthermore, the CN fibers are horizontally orientated in the PVDF matrix by tailoring the optimal magnetic field to 1.0 T–150 ℃. This results in a significant increase in the ε ′ of 25, which is 92 % and 194 % higher than that of a CN fiber without magnetic field treatment and pure PVDF, respectively, while maintaining a low tan δ of 0.08. Experimental and simulation results indicate that the magnetic orientation tailoring enhances the multi-interface polarization, especially the inner interfacial polarization (△ P in ) at the CCTO/Ni interfaces, dominantly improving dielectric performance, as evidenced by the high interfacial polarization strength, △ ε 2 ∼ 141.51, the low activation energy, E a ∼ 0.81 eV, and the large △ P in ∼ 1.06×10 4 μC/m 2 . This magnetic orientation tailoring strategy offers a new paradigm and significant guidance for the development of polymer dielectrics with exceptional dielectric properties.
