Fabrication of patterned magnetic hydrogels by ion transfer printing

Jingda Tang,Liangsong Zeng,Zishun Liu

Magnetic hydrogels have found a myriad of applications in bioengineering and soft robotics. As the function of magnetic hydrogels is affected by the distribution of magnetic nanoparticles, it is imperative to propose a strategy for fabricating patterned magnetic hydrogels. However, previous strategies can only achieve very simple distribution by using external magnetic fields to guide the chain-like assembly of nanoparticles. It remains challenging to realize the complex distribution of magnetic nanoparticles in a hydrogel. Here we propose an ion transfer printing strategy to prepare patterned magnetic hydrogels, taking advantage of the ion permeation and nanoparticle precipitation in the hydrogel. The polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel is loaded with Fe2+/Fe3+ ions and covered with a patterned filter paper with OH− ions to generate Fe3O4 nanoparticles locally. The effect of the ion concentration and covering time on the generation of nanoparticles is investigated by using a reaction–diffusion model. Furthermore, the magnetothermal response of the patterned magnetic hydrogels has been characterized to reveal the distribution and thermogenesis of magnetic nanoparticles. We hope that the fabricated magnetic hydrogels with complex patterns can open up new opportunities for applications.

Adhesive Tough Magnetic Hydrogels with High Fe3O4 Content

Xiaocheng Hu,Guodong Nian,Xueya Liang,Lei Wu,Tenghao Yin,Haotian Lu,Shaoxing Qu,Wei Yang

Magnetic hydrogels have promising applications in flexible electronics, biomedical devices, and soft robotics. However, most existing magnetic hydrogels are fragile and suffer insufficient magnetic response. In this paper, we present a new approach to fabricate a strong, tough, and adhesive magnetic hydrogel with nontoxic polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel as the matrix and the functional additive [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate coated Fe3O4] as the inclusions. This magnetic hydrogel not only offers a relatively high modulus and toughness compared to the pure hydrogel but also responds to the magnetic field rapidly because of high magnetic particle content (up to 60%, with respect to the total weight of the polymers and water). The hydrogel can be bonded to hydroxyl-rich hard and soft surfaces. Magnetic hydrogel with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating exhibits excellent underwater performance. The bonding between magnetic hydrogel and PDMS is very stable even under cyclic loading. An artificial muscle and its magnetomechanical coupling performance are demonstrated using this hydrogel. The adhesive tough magnetic hydrogel will open up extensive applications in many fields, such as controlled drug delivery systems, coating of soft devices, and microfluidics. The strategy is applicable to other functional soft materials.

Programmable shape transformation of 3D printed magnetic hydrogel composite for hyperthermia cancer therapy

Jingda Tang,Qianfeng Yin,Mengting Shi,Meng Yang,Hang Yang,Bonan Sun,Baolin Guo,Tiejun Wang

Recent advances in soft magnetic nanocomposites have enabled myriads of magnetic robots with programmable shape transformation, shedding light on various biomedical applications. However, the complex shape transformation of magnetic hydrogels remains a challenge because of their ultralow magnetization and simple geometry. Here we demonstrate an approach to meet this challenge by fabricating composite structures of magnetic hydrogels and elastomers with extrusion-based 3D printing. Under an alternating magnetic field, magneto-thermo-sensitive hydrogels — poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) embedding Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, can undergo abrupt volume collapse due to magnetothermal effect. The mismatch in the responsiveness of magnetic hydrogels and elastomers enables the shape transformation of the composite structure. We have printed magnetic hydrogels with various geometries and achieved complex shape transformation of the composite structure. The shape transformative structure can simultaneously encase and kill cancer cells (human malignant melanoma cells) through magnetic hyperthermia. ∼ 50% of cancer cells can be killed by the heated magnetic hydrogel during deformation. This approach may open opportunities for applications in medicine and bioengineering.

Synthesis of Acylated Xylan-Based Magnetic Fe3O4 Hydrogels and Their Application for H2O2 Detection

Qing-Qing Dai,Jun-Li Ren,Feng Peng,Xiao-Feng Chen,Cun-Dian Gao,Run-Cang Sun

Acylated xylan-based magnetic Fe3O4nanocomposite hydrogels (ACX-MNP-gels) were prepared by fabricating Fe3O4nanoctahedra in situ within a hydrogel matrix which was synthesized by the copolymerization of acylated xylan (ACX) with acrylamide andN-isopropylacrylamide under ultraviolet irradiation. The size of the Fe3O4fabricated within the hydrogel matrix could be adjusted through controlling the crosslinking concentrations (C). The magnetic hydrogels showed desirable magnetic and mechanical properties, which were confirmed by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, physical property measurement system, SEM, TGA, and compression test. Moreover, the catalytic performance of the magnetic hydrogels was explored. The magnetic hydrogels (C = 7.5 wt %) presented excellent catalytic activity and provided a sensitive response to H2O2detection even at a concentration level of 5 × 10−6mol·L−1. This approach to preparing magnetic hydrogels loaded with Fe3O4nanoparticles endows xylan-based hydrogels with new promising applications in biotechnology and environmental chemistry. Keywords:xylan;acylated xylan;magnetic hydrogels;Fe3O4nanoparticles;H2O2detection

Three-Dimensional Printable Magnetic Hydrogels with Adjustable Stiffness and Adhesion for Magnetic Actuation and Magnetic Hyperthermia Applications

Xueting Xuan,Yi Li,Xing Xu,Zhouyi Pan,Yu Li,Yonghao Luo,Li Sun

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels hold immense promise for biomedical applications, but conventional gelation processes often struggle to achieve the precision and complexity required for advanced functionalities such as soft robotics, targeted drug delivery, and tissue engineering. This study introduces a class of 3D-printable magnetic hydrogels with tunable stiffness, adhesion, and magnetic responsiveness, prepared through a simple and efficient “one-pot” method. This approach enables precise control over the hydrogel’s mechanical properties, with an elastic modulus ranging from 43 kPa to 277 kPa, tensile strength from 93 kPa to 421 kPa, and toughness from 243 kJ/m3to 1400 kJ/m3, achieved by modulating the concentrations of acrylamide (AM) and Fe3O4nanoparticles. These hydrogels exhibit rapid heating under an alternating magnetic field, reaching 44.4 °C within 600 s at 15 wt%, demonstrating the potential for use in mild magnetic hyperthermia. Furthermore, the integration of Fe3O4nanoparticles and nanoclay into the AM precursor optimizes the rheological properties and ensures high printability, enabling the fabrication of complex, high-fidelity structures through extrusion-based 3D printing. Compared to existing magnetic hydrogels, our 3D-printable platform uniquely combines adjustable mechanical properties, strong adhesion, and multifunctionality, offering enhanced capabilities for use in magnetic actuation and hyperthermia in biomedical applications. This advancement marks a significant step toward the scalable production of next-generation intelligent hydrogels for precision medicine and bioengineering.

Magnetic-field induced shape memory hydrogels for deformable actuators

Ye Tian,Zhirui Xu,Hao Qi,Xiaojun Lu,Ting Jiang,Liqian Wang,Guang Zhang,Rui Xiao,Huaping Wu

Magnetic hydrogel actuators exhibit promising applications in the fields of soft robotics, bioactuators, and flexible sensors owing to their inherent advantages such as remote control capability, untethered deformation and motion control, as well as easily manipulable behavior. However, it is still a challenge for magnetic hydrogels to achieve adjustable stiffness and shape fixation under magnetic field actuation deformation. Herein, a simple and effective approach is proposed for the design of magnetic shape memory hydrogels to accomplish this objective. The magnetic shape memory hydrogels, consisting of methacrylamide, methacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol and Fe3O4 magnetic particles, which crosslinked by hydrogen bonds, are facilely prepared via one-pot polymerization. The dynamic nature of noncovalent bonds offers the magnetic hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties, precisely controlled stiffness, and effective shape fixation. The presence of Fe3O4 particles renders the hydrogels soft when subjected to an alternating current field, facilitating their deformation under the influence of an actuation magnetic field. After the elimination of the alternating current magnetic field, the hydrogels stiffen and attain a fixed actuated shape in the absence of any external magnetic field. Moreover, this remarkable magnetic shape memory hydrogel is effectively employed as an underwater soft gripper for lifting heavy objects. This work provides a novel strategy for fabricating magnetic hydrogels with non-contact reversible actuation deformation, tunable stiffness and shape locking.

Smart cellulose-derived magnetic hydrogel with rapid swelling and deswelling properties for remotely controlled drug release

Lin Fengcai,Zheng Junjian,Guo Weihong,Zhu Zhiting,Wang Zi,Dong Biying,Lin Chensheng,Huang Biao,Lu Beili

Although cellulose hydrogels are one of promising biomaterials for drug release carrier, their passive manner of drug release and the absence of remote stimuli response limit their further applications. Herein, we report a simple one-pot method for the synthesis of magnetic β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/cellulose hydrogel beads, which exhibited rapid swelling–deswelling properties under an external magnetic field (EMF) to remotely control drug release from passive release to stepwise release. The grafted β-CD endows the hydrogel with high drug loading capacity and, simultaneously, the incorporation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles provide the force for stepwise drug release through EMF induced rapid and reversible deformation of 3D network. We demonstrate that the efficiency of the hydrogel in the stepwise drug release dose and rate can be controlled by switching on–off the EMF and adjusting the content of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Additionally, results from cytotoxicity tests confirmed the excellent biocompatibility of the developed hydrogel, which is promising to be used in the biomedical field.

Mussel-inspired magnetic pullulan hydrogels for enhancing catalytic degradation of antibiotics from biomedical wastewater

Xihao Pan,Siyao Cheng,Cheng Zhang,Yingzhi Jiao,Xiangpeng Lin,Wei Dong,Xiaoliang Qi

Magnetic hydrogels are fascinating materials that can be used as Fenton-like catalysts to remove antibiotics from biomedical wastewater. However, the poor distribution of magnetic nanoparticles in hydrogel matrix and weak mechanical properties severely confine their applications from lab to industrial scale. Here, we presented for the first time the facile fabrication of mussel-inspired magnetic pullulan ( MMP ) hydrogels using polydopamine as a bridge to build a relationship between Fe 3 O 4 and pullulan matrix, which could solve the common problems of magnetic hydrogels and enhance catalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) simultaneously. Degradation results proved that our catalytic system ( MMP4 ) showed superior TC degradation efficiency (86.32% within 60 min). Theoretical studies verified that TC could act as an electron donor and the produced electrons from TC were transferred via polydopamine to the iron species through π-Fe interactions. Besides, MMP4 exhibited excellent reusability and stability that no apparent decrease in degradation efficiency was observed after 5 cycles. Altogether, our findings provide a simple but effective strategy to design magnetic hydrogel catalysts for enhancing antibiotic degradation from biomedical wastewater.

Biomimetic strategy to synthesize a strong, tough and elastic cellulose enhanced magnetic hydrogel

Liu Yupeng,Jian Junyu,Xie Yitong,Gao Shishuai,Zhang Daihui,Shi Hao,Xu Yuzhi,Lai Chenhuan,Wang Chunpeng,Chu Fuxiang

Magnetic hydrogels have been widely utilized in the fields of biomedical devices, flexible electronics, and soft robotics. Unfortunately, current strategies to synthesize magnetic hydrogels are difficult to achieve high mechanical properties. Herein, we have presented a biomimetic strategy to synthesize a strong, tough and elastic cellulose enhanced magnetic hydrogel (CEMH). The cellulose skeleton containing magnetic nanoparticles was first generated by self-assembly of cellulose chains as the enhancement filler, while elastic polyacrylamide formed by in situ polymerization functioned as the elastic matrix. The mechanical and physicochemical properties of CEMH, as well as the effect of Fe 3 O 4 and acrylamide concentration on the performance, were systematically investigated. The highest tensile strength and toughness of CEMH could reach 1.1 MPa and 2.9 MJ/m 3 , respectively. Furthermore, CEMH showed a high elastic recovery of 94.5% (10th cycle), accompanies by a certain swelling resistance ability. All these advantages were accomplished mainly owing to the synergetic contribution of biomimetic design and enhanced non-covalent interactions.

Comparative adsorption of emerging contaminants in water by functional designed magnetic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/chitosan hydrogels

Aijiao Zhou,Wangwei Chen,Lei Liao,Pengchao Xie,Tian C. Zhang,Xumeng Wu,Xiaonan Feng

The magnetic poly( N -isopropylacrylamide)/chitosan hydrogel with interpenetrating network (IPN) structure was designed based on the functional groups of targeted emerging contaminants , represented by hydrophilic sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and hydrophobic bisphenol A (BPA). The average particle size, specific surface area, and total pore volume of the hydrogel were turned out to be 103.7 μm, 60.70 m 2 /g and 0.0672 cm 3 /g, respectively. Adsorption results indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity occurred at the pH where SMZ was anionic and BPA was uncharged. When the adsorption temperature increased from 25 °C to 35 °C, the amount of adsorbed SMZ hardly changed, but that of BPA increased by two times. The adsorption capacity of the binary system (i.e., with both SMZ and BPA) was almost the same as that of the single system, indicating that simultaneous adsorption of SMZ and BPA was achieved. The adsorption equilibrium was reached quickly (within 5 min) for both SMZ and BPA. For adsorption isotherm, the Freundlich model fitted well for SMZ at 25, 35 and 45 °C. However, the adsorption of BPA exhibited the sigmoidally shaped isotherm at 25 °C with the Slips model fitting well, and both the Freundlich isotherm and the Slips isotherm fitted the data well at 35 °C and 45 °C, suggesting that the adsorption force was initially weak but greatly enhanced with an increase in adsorbate concentration or ambient temperature. The main adsorption mechanism was inferred to be electrostatic interactions for SMZ, and hydrophobic interactions as well as hydrogen bonding for BPA. The hydrogel adsorbent maintained favorable adsorption capacity for BPA after five adsorption-desorption cycles. These findings may provide a strategy for designing high performance adsorbents that can remove both hydrophilic and hydrophobic organic contaminants in the aquatic environment.

Liquid-bodied antibiofilm robot with switchable viscoelastic response for biofilm eradication on complex surface topographies

Bonan Sun,Junjia Guo,Bo Hao,Yanfei Cao,Tony K. F. Chan,Mengmeng Sun,Joseph J. Y. Sung,Li Zhang

Recalcitrant biofilm infections pose a great challenge to human health. Micro- and nanorobots have been used to eliminate biofilm infections in hard-to-reach regions inside the body. However, applying antibiofilm robots under physiological conditions is limited by the conflicting demands of accessibility and driving force. Here, we introduce a liquid-bodied antibiofilm robot constructed by a dynamically cross-linked magnetic hydrogel. Leveraging the viscoelastic response of the robot enables it to adapt to complex surface topographies such as medical meshes and stents. Upon actuation, the robot can mechanically destroy the biofilm matrix, chemically deactivate bacterial cells, and collect disrupted biofilm debris. The robot’s antibiofilm performance is studied in vitro and demonstrated on a medical mesh and a biliary stent. Tracking and navigation under endoscopy and x-ray imaging in an ex vivo porcine bile duct are demonstrated. Last, in vivo antibiofilm treatment is conducted by indwelling infected stents into mice’s abdominal cavity and clearing the biofilm infection using the proposed robot.

Preparation of green magnetic hydrogel from soybean residue cellulose for effective and rapid removal of copper ions from wastewater

Peiyi Li,Miaomiao Zhou,Hezhen Liu,Haozhe Lei,Boxing Jian,Ruiyan Liu,Xinping Li,Yun Wang,Bingyao Zhou

The treatment of industrial wastewater has become a worldwide concern. Among them, heavy metal pollution is a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. In this context, it is an inevitable trend to develop the corresponding governance system and technology . In this study, a magnetic hydrogel with adsorbable properties was prepared by physical cross-linking with soybean residue cellulose. It is adsorbed by chelating the -NH 2 groups with Cu 2+ . The results show that the increased of cellulose content benefits the mechanical strength and swelling property of the hydrogel. Through the study of adsorption isotherm , it was found that adsorption of Cu2 + by the magnetic hydrogel conforms to Freundlich model and belongs to multilayer mixed adsorption. This study provides a feasible method to prepare a new absorbent of magnetic hydrogels using natural and sustainable materials.
