Separation is crucial for recycling heavy metals, however, most of the reported processes focus on separating metals from non-metals. Here we propose a magnetic levitation (MagLev) configuration to separate heavy metals from metallic mixtures. The novel configuration is able to levitate substances with specific densities over 5.00 g/cm 3 , while the extant MagLev devices can only handle materials that have specific densities no more than 3.00 g/cm 3 . We mathematically model the proposed MagLev configuration and apply the approach to separate rare earth metals from fluorescent powders as well as indium contents from indium-tin oxide (ITO)/glass mixtures, mechanically processed liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and ITO powder. The results show that the recovery rates of ITO from ITO/glass mixtures are over 95%, the concentrations of indium in separated LCD shreds are doubled (from 912.0 ppm to 1873.1 ppm), and the purities of separated In 2 O 3 from ITO powder are around 90%. The method is controllable and requires no energy or chemical inputs, and it thereby has tremendous prospects in heavy metal recycling.

Magnetic levitation (MagLev) is a well-documented and widely-applied technique in accurate, sensitive, and untethered testing of living and non-living materials in both macroscale and microscale. However, most magnetic levitation configurations face the dilemma between working range and sensitivity, since the distance between the two like-pole-facing magnets are in positive relationship with sensitivity, but negative with measuring range. And there exists a maximum distance for MagLev configurations where the misalignment happens when the distance is too large, which is a restriction on the working space and measurement range of the MagLev devices. In this paper, we propose a novel configuration based on the principle of Halbach array, namely the Cross-Halbach MagLev configuration. By doing parallel comparisons with the Standard MagLev consisting of magnets of the same size, we determined the superiority of the Cross-Halbach configuration in magnetic flux density (0.47 T) and B → ∙ ∇ B → z (6.25 T 2 /m), maximum distance (90 mm), sensitivity (525 mm/(g/cm 3 )) and wide linear zone on B → ∙ ∇ B → z (42 mm). To demonstrate and further explore the potential of the Cross-Halbach MagLev, we carried out a series of experiments, including density measurements of standard beads and different polymers, detection and separation of similar polymers with minute difference in density, and nondestructive detection of voids. The results indicate that the proposed magnetic levitation configuration is competent of density-based applications and can serve as a new solution to high-sensitivity measurement and detection.

Non-contact manipulation and measurement of cells are the major concerns in the biomedical field . However, the existing methods are limited by the physical properties of cells, and may cause damages to the cells. This paper proposes an original non-contact manipulation and measurement method by magnetic levitation . Based on the configuration of two ring magnets with like poles facing each other, the cells can aggregate and levitate in the paramagnetic medium. The mathematical model was established to analyze the distributions of magnetic fields and movements of cells for the first time. Theoretical and experimental results show that the magnetic levitation method can be adaptive to the cells by tuning the size of the configuration. The three-dimensional cell clusters were formed and the average densities of 3T3, MDA, B16 and 4T1 cells were measured as 1.074 ± 0.005 g/cm 3 , 1.084 ± 0.003 g/cm 3 , 1.079 ± 0.002 g/cm 3 and 1.124 ± 0.003 g/cm 3 respectively. Moreover, the dead cells and living cells were distinguished based on the levitating heights. The results indicate that the proposed magnetic levitation method is promising for the three-dimensional culture and rapid measurement of cells.

This study proposes a magnetic levitation fixed bed flocculation reactor as an effective method for the removal of Cr (VI). The research examines the effects of both single and dual polymer flocculants on the efficiency of the flocculation process. Initially, a magnetic levitation layer was established using a radial magnetic field in conjunction with stainless steel balls. Subsequently, polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and a non-ionic coagulant, polyacrylamide (NPAM), were introduced into the water to create a magnetic levitation fixed bed flocculation reactor. This reactor with the objective of purifying water contaminated with simulated Cr (VI). The results indicate that the incorporation of a reducing agent, specifically FeSO 4 , in conjunction with PAC and NPAM respectively, can achieve Cr (VI) removal rates exceeding 97% and turbidity removal rates exceeding 96%. The interaction between the cross-flow influent and the flocculating particles promotes the formation of micro-vortex flocculation.
