For metal-based phosphate adsorbents, the dispersity and utilization of surface metal active sites are crucial factors in their adsorption performance and synthesis cost. In this study, a biochar material modified with amorphous Zr–Ce (carbonate) oxides (BZCCO-13) was synthesized for the phosphate uptake, and the adsorption process was enhanced by magnetic field. The beside-magnetic field was shown to have a better influence than under-magnetic field on adsorption, with maximum adsorption capacities (123.67 mg P/g) 1.14-fold greater than that without magnetic field. The beside-magnetic field could also accelerate the adsorption rate, and the time to reach 90% maximum adsorption capacity decreased by 83%. BZCCO-13 has a wide range of application pHs from 5.0 to 10.0, with great selectivity and reusability. The results of XPS and ELNES showed that the "magnetophoresis" of Ce 3+ under the magnetic field was the main reason for the enhanced adsorption performance. In addition, increased surface roughness, pore size and oxygen vacancies , enhanced mass transfer by Lorentz force under a magnetic field, all beneficially influenced the adsorption process. The mechanism of phosphate adsorption by BZCCO-13 could be attributed to electrostatic attraction and CO 3 2– dominated ligand exchange. This study not only provided an effective strategy for designing highly effective phosphate adsorbents, but also provides a new light on the application of rare earth metal-based adsorbent in magnetic field.

This paper describes a new label-free cell separation method using a magnetic repulsion force resulting from the magnetic susceptibility difference between cells and a paramagnetic buffer solution in a microchannel. The difference in the magnetic forces acting on different-sized cells is enhanced by adjusting the magnetic susceptibility of the surrounding medium, which depends on the concentration of paramagnetic salts, such as biocompatible gadolinium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd–DTPA), dissolved therein. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, Gd–DTPA solutions at concentrations of 0–80 mM were applied to separate U937 cells from red blood cells (RBCs) and to distinguish two different-sized polystyrene (PS) beads (8 and 10 μm in diameter). By increasing the Gd–DTPA concentration from 0 to 40 mM, the separation resolution of PS beads was increased from 0.08 to 0.91. Additionally, we successfully achieved label-free separation of U937 cells from RBCs with >90% purity and 1 × 105 cells/h throughput using a 40 mM Gd–DTPA solution.

Magnetic separation was often applied to isolate and concentrate foodborne bacteria using immunomagnetic nanobeads before downstream bacterial detection. However, nanobead-bacteria conjugates (magnetic bacteria) were coexisting with excessive unbound nanobeads, limiting these nanobeads on magnetic bacteria to further act as signal probes for bacterial detection. Here, a new microfluidic magnetophoretic biosensor was elaboratively developed using a rotated high gradient magnetic field and platinum modified immunomagnetic nanobeads for continuous-flow isolation of magnetic bacteria from free nanobeads, and combined with nanozyme signal amplification for colorimetric biosensing of Salmonella . First, the platinum modified immunomagnetic nanobeads were mixed with the bacterial sample to form the magnetic bacteria, and magnetically separated to eliminate non-magnetic background. Then, the mixture of free immunomagnetic nanobeads and magnetic bacteria was injected with sheath flow (PBS) at higher flowrate into the semi-circle magnetophoretic separation channel under rotated magnetic field, which was generated by two repulsive cylindric magnets and their in-between ring iron gear, leading to continuous-flow isolation of magnetic bacteria from free immunomagnetic nanobeads because they suffered from different magnetic forces and thus had different deviating positions at the outlet. Finally, the separated magnetic bacteria and unbound magnetic nanobeads were respectively collected and used to catalyze coreless substrate into blue product, which was further analyzed using the microplate reader to obtain bacterial amount. This biosensor could determinate Salmonella as low as 41 CFU/mL in 40 min.

Effective delivery of anticancer drugs into the nucleus for pharmacological action is impeded by a series of intratumoral transport barriers. Despite the significant potential of magnetic nanovehicles in electromagnetic field (EF)-activated drug delivery, modularizing a tandem magnetoresponsive activity in a one-nanoparticle system to meet different requirements at both tissue and cellular levels remain highly challenging. Herein, a strategy is described by employing sequential EF frequencies in inducing a succession of magnetoresponses in the magnetic nanovehicles that aims to realize cascaded tissue penetration and nuclear accumulation. This nanovehicle features ferrimagnetic vortex-domain iron oxide nanorings coated with a thermo-responsive polyethylenimine copolymer (PI/FVIOs). It is shown that the programmed cascading of low frequency (L f )-EF-induced magnetophoresis and medium frequency (M f )-EF-stimulated magneto-thermia can steer the Doxorubicin (DOX)-PI/FVIOs to the deep tissue and subsequently trigger intracellular burst release of DOX for successful nuclear entry. By programming the order of different EF frequencies, it is demonstrated that first-stage L f -EF and subsequent M f -EF operation enables DOX-PI/FVIOs to effectively deliver 86.2% drug into the nucleus in vivo . This nanodelivery system empowers potent antitumoral activity in various models of intractable tumors, including DOX-resistant MCF-7 breast cancer cells, triple-negative MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, and BxPC-3 pancreatic cancer cells with poor permeability.
