Biomass-derived carbon materials have received a surge of scientific attention to develop lightweight and broadband microwave absorbers. Herein, rodlike porous carbon materials derived from cotton have been fabricated with uniformly dispersed CoFe2O4 nanoparticles via facile and scalable process. The combination of magnetic particles and carbonaceous material is advantageous to realize the magnetic-dielectric synergistic effect which could effectively promote the dissipation of incident waves, giving rise to an optimal reflection loss value of –48.2 dB over a qualified bandwidth (4.8 GHz) at 2.5 mm. The cotton-derived carbon rods with conductive network not only act as a supporter to carry the CoFe2O4 nanoparticles, but also provide massive heterointerfaces to facilitate the interfacial polarization. In consideration of the renewable and abundant resource of cotton, the as-prepared CoFe2O4/C composites would meet the increasing demand of lightweight and highly efficient microwave absorbers.

Developing a lightweight microwave absorbing materials with high absorption capacity and wide absorption bandwidth at low thickness is a perennial challenge in practical applications in the microwave absorption (MA) field. Herein, sandwich-like heterogeneous Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 /Fe are designed by synergistically incorporating dielectric-magnetic components with a simple solvothermal method and post-annealing. The sandwich-like heterogeneous interface produces sufficient conduction loss for Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 /Fe, with TiO 2 crystals and amorphous carbon anchored on its surface to enhance interface polarization and Debye relaxation. Additionally, the presence of Fe nanoparticles induces magnetic loss, including natural resonance and eddy current loss. By bidirectionally regulating the ratio of Ti 3 C 2 T x and Fe 3 O 4 , the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) value reaches − 64.6 dB at 17.49 GHz with a 1.48 mm thickness, and the corresponding effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL < −10 dB) is 4.59 GHz (13.41–18 GHz). The results suggest that the exceptional EMW absorption performance of composites can be attributed to the dielectric-magnetic synergistic effect and sandwich-like heterostructures . This study offers a rational approach for synthesizing ultrathin and lightweight Ti 3 C 2 T x -based absorbers.

ABSTRACT The construction of a three-dimensional heterojunction interface and chemical modification can significantly enhance the electromagnetic wave absorption capability of composites. In this study, we successfully synthesized a covalently bonded carboxyl functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x (CFTC) complexed with Amino-Fe 3 O 4 (CFTC-Fe 3 O 4 ) through an amidation reaction followed by a post-annealing process, resulting in the homogeneous dispersion of NH 2 -Fe 3 O 4 between CFTC layers. The innovative approach establishes a multi-layer heterojunction interface that effectively encapsulates magnetic nanoparticles with CFTC, thereby enhancing both interface polarization, defect polarization and conduction loss. The magnetoelectric synergy between CFTC and NH 2 -Fe 3 O 4 improves impedance matching and endows the composites with exceptional electromagnetic wave absorption capabilities. Notably, the absorbers demonstrate an impressive minimum reflection loss of -50.95 dB at a thickness of 1.56 mm when the mass ratio of CFTC to NH 2 -Fe 3 O 4 is 1:1 (designated as CTNF-2), accompanied by an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.76 GHz (12.32-17.08 GHz). This study presents a novel approach to developing highly efficient MXene-based absorbing materials through chemical modifications.

The efficient microwave attenuation mechanism is a primary challenge in the development of microwave absorbing materials (MAMs). The rational design of microstructure and the selection of components are important factors in achieving excellent microwave absorption performance. A dual-coated-layer modified fly ash (FA) core-shell structure microspheres FA@CoNi@PPy with an outer layer of polypyrrole (PPy) and an inner layer of CoNi particles was prepared by a simple surface deposition method. By effectively combining the CoNi metal layer and conductive polymer PPy on hollow FA, the impedance matching performance has been effectively improved, and the microwave absorption efficiency has been notably improved as well. The results indicate that the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) can reach as low as −48.40 dB, and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) of 6.48 GHz (RL < −10 dB) has been achieved, covering the whole Ku band, with a thickness of 2.25 mm. The enhanced absorption performance of FA@CoNi@PPy is closely related to the magnetic-electric synergy effect, multiple interface polarizations, Debye relaxation processes, electromagnetic resonance, and internal multiple scattering mechanisms among various components. This work innovatively combines magnetic and dielectric properties onto specific microstructure within a single material system, providing a novel perspective for the design of high-performance MAMs.

Multilayered structures with abundant interfaces are highly desired for reducing the thickness and improving electromagnetic (EM) attenuation ability. Herein, elaborately designed laminar Fe 3 O 4 /MXene nanosheets exhibit great potential as high-efficiency and lightweight absorbers due to heterogeneous structure coupled with intensive magnetic-dielectric synergistic effect. The MXene nanosheets with metallic conductivity not only serve as a supporter to carry the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 , but also provide massive interfaces to facilitate the transport of charge carriers. Hollow Fe 3 O 4 microspheres were evenly dispersed without apparent agglomeration on the MXene surface, giving rise to largely enhanced consumption ability of –42.7 dB over a broad qualified bandwidth (5.7 GHz) at 2.5 mm. Besides, static density functional theory (DFT) method was introduced to shed light on the absorption mechanism by portraying the interaction between the Fe 3 O 4 and MXene. This study provides a crucial strategy for designing magnetic-supported composites by means of a large family of MXenes as thin and lightweight EM absorbers.

Magnetic carbon-based microwave absorption materials (MAMs) derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been regarded as promising candidates for addressing the electromagnetic pollution. The construction of magnetic carbon-based MAMs derived from MOFs with ferromagnetic centers (Fe, Co, Ni etc.) and their composites has become a mainstream in recent years. However, MOFs with non-magnetic centers have received less attentions due to the challenges in achieving magnetic-dielectric synergistic effect and proper impedance matching in their derivatives. In this work, a facile metal-polyphenol network coating strategy has been proposed to facilitate the construction of magnetic MWCNTs decorated TiN 0.9 /NC absorber derived from non-magnetic MIL-125(Ti). The regulation effect of carbothermal temperature on magnetism, defect density, graphitization degree as well as electromagnetic parameters of absorbers have been systematically investigated. The obtained composites exhibit outstanding microwave absorption performance due to the magnetic-dielectric synergistic effect and improved impedance matching. The minimum reflection loss reaches −42.55 dB at 1.91 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth reaches as wide as 4.6 GHz with an ultra-thin thickness of only 1.38 mm. It is believed that this study provides a new way to construct efficient magnetic carbon-based MAMs with non-magnetic metal-based MOFs and a meaningful exploration for the preparation of ultra-thin absorbers.

Electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption materials with excellent absorption performances are highly desirable because of military applications and EM radiation pollution protection. In this work, we have synthesized and demonstrated the flakes-assembled porous ZnO/Ni hybrid nanotubes by combining electrospinning and hydrothermal reaction , coupled with following calcination and reduction process. The rational-designed ZnO/Ni nanocomposites exhibited extremely superb EM wave absorption property with a minimum reflection loss (RL) of −71.2 dB at 15.3 GHz, corresponding to a thickness of 3.4 mm and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (RL≤–10 dB) is up to 9.4 GHz (8.6–18.0 GHz) with the thickness of 4.2 mm. The significant performance improvement originated from that the unique three-dimensional architecture optimized impedance matching characteristics and magnetic-dielectric synergetic effect contributed to a strong attenuation capacity. This work provided a feasible strategy to synthesize flakes-assembled nanotube microstructure and the ZnO/Ni composites promised great potential in the EM wave absorption fields.

The unique layered structure and high conductivity of MXene materials make them highly promising for microwave absorption. However, the finite loss mechanism and severe agglomeration present challenging obstacles for ideal microwave absorbers, which could be effectively improved by constructing a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure. This study reports a 3D honeycomb MXene using a straightforward template method. The 3D MXene framework offers ample cavities to anchor the Prussian blue microcubes and their derivatives including Fe microboxes and Fe clusters by a simple annealing process. Based on the superiority of the 3D honeycomb architecture and magnetic–dielectric synergistic effects, the Fe/MXene absorbers demonstrate outstanding microwave absorption capabilities with the optimum reflection loss value of −40.3 dB at 2.00 mm in the low-frequency range from 4.2 to 5.6 GHz. The absorber also manifests superior radar wave attenuation by finite element analysis and exhibits great potential to be a flexible and thermal insulation material in a wide range of temperatures. This work proposes a useful reference for the design of 3D MXene-based porous architectures, and the synergistic magnetic–dielectric strategy further expands the potential of MXene-based absorbers, enabling them to be used as flexible and highly efficient microwave absorbers.

Excessive artificial electromagnetic radiation poses significant health risks and disrupts military equipment. To address this, high-performance microwave absorption materials are urgently required. While ferromagnetic materials have excellent absorption but suffer from high density, limited bandwidth , and perishable properties. Carbon materials, especially metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), offer promise due to low density, chemical stability, and high conductivity. In this study, we synthesized a novel multicore-shell Fe 3 O 4 @Fe@C composite via solvothermal and in-situ pyrolysis methods. This composite integrated Zn-MOF-derived porous carbon with core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @Fe@C, enabling multiple electromagnetic wave routes, strong interfacial polarization , and magnetic-dielectric synergy. It exhibited exceptional electromagnetic wave absorption, with a −59.1 dB reflection loss at 13.36 GHz and a 5.36 GHz effective absorption bandwidth. Our innovative MOF-core-shell approach holds great promise for highly efficient microwave absorbers to mitigate artificial electromagnetic radiation's adverse effects on health and military equipment.

Using single loss type media as microwave absorbers to simultaneously achieve low reflection loss, wide-band absorption and thin thickness is a huge challenge. In this work, to combine the high dielectric loss of Pr-doped M-type strontium ferrite and the high magnetic loss of W-type hexaferrites, we improved the traditional sol–gel auto-combustion method via increasing an extra sintering process and successfully prepared xSrPr0.5Fe11.5O19/yBaCo2Pr0.5Fe15.5O27 (x : y = 2 : 1, 1.5 : 1, 1 : 1, 1 : 1.5 and 1 : 2) M/W (M-type hexaferrite/W-type hexaferrite) composite materials with a unique “inlay structure”. The M-phase and PrFeO3-type phase were partially wrapped by the huge W-phase, which resulted in enhanced exchange coupling. Benefitting from the exchange coupling and huge grains, the coercivity and anisotropy fields of composite hexaferrites decreased. Therefore, the natural resonance frequencies of some samples reduced to within 18.00 GHz. High magnetic loss occurs while dielectric loss is preserved due to strong resonance interaction and multiple polarization relaxation mechanisms. Hence, the composite hexaferrites exhibit satisfactory microwave absorption performance on account of the magnetic–dielectric synergistic effect. The effective absorption bandwidth of the prepared materials can cover X and Ku bands at thin matching thicknesses (<2.00 mm). The minimum reflection loss reaches −56.30 dB (d = 1.97 mm), and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth reaches 8.17 GHz (d = 1.63 mm). This work will provide new ideas for improving the absorption performance of ferrite composite materials.

The pursuit of achieving wideband electromagnetic wave absorption to meet the demands in multiple fields has attracted attention in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption. Considering that the dipole moments of different scales can correspond to different polarization bands, the coupling of multi-scale loss mechanisms may help to realize the electromagnetic wave absorption in the wide band. Therefore, we fabricated N-doped Co/C composites derived from ZIF-67 through a facile wet chemistry approach and pyrolysis process. Due to the precise fabrication method and the design of the Stranski-Krastanow growth mode, the prepared N-doped Co/C composites contain abundant functional groups, magnetic particles, and cobalt quantum dots. By combining atomic-scale doping loss and mesoscopic-scale hollow structures, the Co/C composite materials achieve the coupling of multiple-scale loss mechanisms and demonstrate outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption performance: the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) value reaches −57.0 dB at 17.9 GHz when the thickness is 1.73 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EABD) reaches the maximum value of 5.7 GHz when the thickness is 2 mm. To sum up, this work provides a new strategy for realizing the broadband absorption of further electromagnetic wave absorption materials.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with intrinsic porosity and high specific surface area have aroused broad interests as a promising electromagnetic (EM) absorbing material. However, the introduction of magnetic components in MOFs has remained as a formidable obstacle for subsequent development. Herein, Fe 3 O 4 /Co-MOF composites were fabricated via a facile and scalable co-precipitation process. The microstructure and morphology of the composites were characterized and the combination of hollow Fe 3 O 4 and Co-MOFs was found to contribute towards the dissipation of incident waves due to the magnetic-dielectric synergistic effect. Impressive microwave absorption ability was obtained with a minimum reflection loss of –56.1 dB over a qualified bandwidth (7.9 GHz) at 2.0 mm. Moreover, the radar cross section simulation further confirmed the effective suppression of radar wave scattering using Fe 3 O 4 /Co-MOF composites. This study provides a versatile strategy for designing magnetic-dielectric composites based on MOFs as effective and broadband microwave absorbers.
